  1. Always check your bike when your "Friends" have been around it! I have no idea when it happened but a "friend" (AKA KEN) was showing me his NEW chrome tail light frame and I thought it was like COOL! Well that was a week ago at the IA, IL, WI, MO, MN M&E. And I have walked past MY bike in the garage at least 20 times since then. I can spot a dust bunny or a hair on it (thinking it's a scratch) at 50 feet! Well then today I was heading out to grill, looked down at my tail light and said "WHAT THE #$LL" is that? Looked closer and low and behold my "friend's" chrome piece is on MY bike!!! How cool is that to have such good friends? And what do you want to bet they are all LAUGHING at me cause I never noticed! :banana:YA, you all know who you are, Ken (920shrek1), Mike (Eusa1 + Cheri) And last but not least Rick (Rick Haywood + Shirley), even my wife Lisa never said anything!. You all did good not letting on! Sorry it took so long for me to OPEN my eyes!! Thank you! It's good to have friends! Bryan
  2. Wife and I took the motorhome with my 87 on a trailer out to the East Coast for a bit of riding in the Ocean City area. When loading / unloading the ol' gal on the trailer, (the bike, not the wife), I noticed something on the underside of the bike nipped a weld at the back of the trailer. Apparantley there's a really close tolerance where the ramp ends and the trailer deck begins. I could see no damage on the bike,...nothing obvious broken or pulled apart, but I can see where the weld on the trailer was scraped. I learned that for easiest unloading I'll use the motorhome leveling jacks to lift the front of the motorhome, giving less of an angle on the loading ramp on the trailer. In any case, the bike seems to run ok, although the diaphrams need replaced (just ordered a new set) The thing is that she started making some sounds that I first thought were major problems, ....sounded like maybe a valve rapping, with an occasional backfire on low rpm / heavy throttle situations. Got the bike back to the motorhome, and let her cool down and gave her the once over, finding the source of all the noise was from the 1/4" hole in the bottom of the inlet of the left muffler. I kept riding, with the noise, and had no further problems, but am wondering what could be causing the increased exhaust flow through this hole. (compared to the other side) Right side barely has any exhaust leakage through it, and no noticeable noise......left side has noticeable exhaust flow and noise through this small hole. Any ideas what I should be looking for before I tear into it? Thanks y'all.
  3. While one of the advantages to running a car tire on your bike is longevity, don't forget maintenance. The other day I left dinner with a group of friends, just like I have done many times in the past. Pulled out into traffic shifted to second gear and heard the sound that sounded like ball bearings in a blender. I coasted over into the left turn lane and came to a stop. One of my buddies pulled up along side of me and asked what was wrong. I looked at him and said, I'm in second gear, both feet are on the ground, my hands are in the air, the engine is running, and I'm not moving!!! Your guess is as good as mine. So we pushed the bike off the road and into the parking lot and shut it down. Luckily for me I was close to help. My buddy went home and grabbed his trailer, (about 3 miles away) and we took the bike to his house. Now comes the problem. We removed the rear wheel, and found the splines on the clutch hub, (the gear on the wheel that connects to the rear differential) was stripped clean. This is why regular maintenance is essential. After further thought, my rear wheel had not been removed from the bike for 30k miles. When I was running a M/C tire and changing it every 8k to 10k miles, that hub was getting cleaned and greased regularly. Fortunately there was no wear or damage to the differential and $104 later for a new hub and dust seal, I was back on the road. Just thought I would share this little bit of info. If it saves just one person from braking down on the road, my job is done.
  4. Ok, More questions about 2 Gen Venture: 1st: The tool kit should be so good that Mike decide to keep it. So can somebody tell me what tool are inicluded on it. So I can purchase each one and have them on the bike? 2nd: I 'm looking for Chrome clamp covers to put on the HD pipes I have to hide the clamps on it. Where can I got them? Thanks for any info on this. :cool10::cool10::cool10:
  5. I have a conundrum concerning the installation of a new front tire on my 86. Part of the problem is probably of my own making and the remainder remains a mystery to me. I installed a new Dunlap E3 and put in 2 oz. of the Dyna Beads. Since this was my first motorcycle tire self-replacement I took my time and read the posts and even watched a video on tire changing. Removed the old tire, polished the rim, removed all the old weights etc. Installed the new tire (MR90-18 71H) and put in the beads, aired it up and everything looked fine. Took the bike out for a ride and did maybe 100 miles. The front tire exhibited a noticeable hopping at low speeds and more so on starts from a standing stop. The the "hopping" disappeared when the speed was increased to above 10 mph or so. The problem: took the bike out for another run and pushed it up into the 80+ mph range (fast for the curvy roads around here). No problems noted until some more vibrations of a much higher frequency developed at higher speeds. When I returned home and was about to turn into my drive the front started a violent head shake. I was rolling right along at the time and was on the front and rear brakes to slow down and turn. The "hopping" was very noticeable and then the head shaking began. Could not turn into the drive and coasted to the neighbors drive and found that the front tire was completely flat and had come off the safety bead on one side. Naturally the Dyna Beads were all over the neighbors drive. Walked home, picked up the air tank and returned to the bike and pumped up the tire, as if nothing had happened. It is still holding 40 psi this morning. My part of the problem is that I put the 'light spot" opposite the valve stem, in reverse of the accepted method. Now what the heck is the remainder of the cause of the tire loosing all the air in a few seconds with no apparent reasons? This experience is certainly not a confidence builder. Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS: As this bike is normally ridden with a side car attached the rake of the triple tree has been increased by about 7 degrees. I was not riding with the car attached when this occurred.
  6. Well I promised pictures of my new ride. Turns out waiting for the color I wanted I got a 2013 instead. They just released them last week. The only difference is that Victory is trying to come out from the Polaris shadow now and have redesigned the logo. I think the logo is better and very nice. I will be hanging around here and leave my info on the assistance page. This is a great site with great people and I appreciate all the help I have gotten either by asking or just researching all the great information here. Hats of to Don for keeping it so great!! Oh and it hasn't rained here in Michigan in over a month and I was saying it was because I haven't had a bike. Well guess what, I got rained on while riding home! Go figure. The drought will now cease.
  7. I have 4 coils on one of my parts bikes and would like to pull them and keep them in case somebody needs them. Is there a way/procedure to test and check them off the bike or on the none running bike ?
  8. Am a fairly new member here, and have greatly enjoyed my time. I had a 1987 venture royale that I bought a few months ago. Squidly wonderfully took time to help me put progressives in my forks, as well as adjust the breaks, clutch, and do a fluid change on both. It made the bike much more fun to ride. However, after riding it to and from work a few times, I had to admit to myself that the bike was not enjoyable to ride in Houston area traffic. I never could get comfortable riding it at rush hour speeds. I also realized that I just didn't have time to work on it like I wanted to, and that the bike was ending up being a garage queen. To make a long story short, I met a guy who wanted to trade his 2001 Honda Shadow ACE 750 for the venture. He was wanting a bigger bike for the road and has the time and space to work on it. So, I traded title for title. I am happy that I got a bike that will suite me well without going int debt. I pointed him to this site and hope he shows up. Also, I am not leaving this site. I will be hanging around. I am available to help any and all who need it (as much as I can), and would still love to ride with y'all any chance I can. I appreciate the family here and hope I can be as much of a help as everyone has been to me. My contact info will remain current should anyone need anything. JP
  9. Well I had the unfortunate task of helping a biker that went down this morning. My next door neighbor and I left for work at the same time. She and I were the second and third on the scene. He was laying face down in a pool of blood. Looks like he may have hit a deer. He was wearing only a half shell helmet. They look cool, but did not keep the gravel from being impacted into his right ear canal. He may lose the hearing from that, his face was covered in blood, major road rash and missing tissue on the right side of his face, left eye had no pupil visible, just red. Right foot.....facing the wrong direction. He was awake, he could not breathe, knocked the wind out of him. I helped him sit up so he could breathe easier. He kept trying to get up to get his bike. I asked him to listen to me, biker to biker, if he promised not to get up, I would go pick up his bike. He agreed and I picked up the bike and rolled it off the road. It WAS a nice Ultra Classic. He was more concerned about the bike than himself. I understand, I probably would be too in the same situation. Once EMS and the police arrived I asked the officer in charge that when they call for the tow truck, to please request a flat bed so there would be less damage done to guys ride. He said he would do that for him. Let's all be careful out there. Watch for mother nature on the back roads. You just never know.
  10. Has anyone ever used the cycle tow? I have a friend that is wanting to gain some insight before he buys and uses one. If anyone has any info that would be great. Thank you
  11. I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I would like to add my thoughts (feel free to correct me). My bike idles great and runs great through the entire range, but just off idle--it goes lean and backfires slightly (this seems common). I decided to richen-up the "pilot screws". I agree with several of the other members who err on the rich side (milage will not be affected much). The "pilot screws" adjust the idle mixture. The Main jet size controls the main circuit mixture. What I usually do on a muscle car is adjust the screws until the highest vacuum reading is attained. What I found with my bike is that No amount of adjustment made any difference at all! That tells me that the entire "idle Circuit" is plugged or otherwise non-functional. The reason the bike idles fine is because the throttles are probably opened-up enough to draw from the main circuit. It's time for a chemical dip.
  12. Does anyone use the electronic deer whistles on their bike? If so any recommendations? Thanks
  13. Almost time to go. We are leaving North Carolina and heading West to Texas. Although we will miss our friends and our little place out here just off the IP for drop zone Sicily at Fort Bragg we are looking forward to getting into our new place outside of San Antonio. The folks in NC and the East here have been great. I have no doubt I will miss sitting on the front porch at the house here as the C-130's and the monstrous C-17's fly over our garage so low you can almost reach out and touch them, then watch as they head over the forest until the parachutes blossom in a strings behind them. Or when the Marines come to town and shake the area with the 155's day and night. Well, maybe we won't miss that. In the last couple of years I've found myself literally falling apart but thanks to modern medicine, I have been mostly put back together. But still I retain a few problems that seriously affect my ability to work on my bike. I had a problem with the bike that really needed fixing. So I waited till an old friend stopped by and we took the bike apart, fixed the problem but another problem cropped up I did not foresee and I had to order a part that didn't come in till after he left for home on the other side of the country. Now I have my bike in 500 pieces or so and waiting for help to come from Texas to put it back together. But. The turning wrenches problem has been resolved. In San Antonio we will be living but a few hundred feet from an old pal, family, rider, member and one time evil companion (we have both reformed from our earlier days on VR.org ... or at least I have), who has sworn to turn wrenches for me when needed, share his stash of ice cream and generally be available to go with when I wanna ride. And away we go ... well, in two weeks or so.
  14. PBJ

    new project.

Well the new Lady (Terri) has been riding with me for over a year and has expressed an interest to looking into riding her own bike. I was looking for a small bike because the Little Lady really is little. 5ft. exactly. We looked at Rebel's and 250 virago's when my sister told me she didn't want her rebel anymore because it was just too small for her. ( she's 6ft.) So we settled on a price and I brought her home. The poor little thing has been sitting under a tarp for years lonely and very neglected. Rust was everywhere and Its taking a can of Neverdull and wet sanding the cases to get it semi shiny again. so here's a before picture. After i get her cleaned up I'll post an after shot. PS. The name on the side says, "Hardley"
  15. We just returned from a vacation trip to Oregon for a week and a half. Jumped on the bike this morning, pulled the choke, and started it up. Trouble is that every time I pushed the choke button in the bike died. I filled the tank up just before we left so the gas is fresh. I figure that either the gas was bad from the gas station or my fuel pump is bad. Bad luck for me!

  17. First time posting. Been lurking a while. I just bought a 99 Venture. The previous owner removed the CB and stereo. The speakers have been changed to Clarion and there are wires run to the right saddlebag for a stereo. I really would like intercom, CB, and FM radio. What are my options? I have a JM 2003 intercom/cb system I bought for a previous bike and didn't use. It has a Harley bracket on it and no headsets. The wiring harness and antenna are there, though. Looking for a reasonably priced solution. Originally thought I could pick up the parts to restore the bike to original condition, but people think they are made of gold.
  18. don't use cb,haven't even got antenna on bike, if I remove cb unit from the bike and stash it away, will all of the other audio stuff still work? Just wondering before I go to the trouble.(unless someone has an old cb antenna laying around the want to part with kinda cheap) 2nd gen........
  19. Goldwing with landing gear...My nephew works at this dealership, I looked at the bike and it is in EXCELLENT shape... http://www.motorsportssuperstore.com/new_vehicle_detail.asp?sid=09447748X7K6K2012J10I15I26JPMQ808R0&veh=141&pov=2726559
  20. With the temp gauge on all our first gens riding high in the heat of summer I have to ask if anyone has ever installed an external oil cooler, and if so how did they do it? My bike isn't overheating just running warm like all of them do. Just wondering if this is a possible mod. to help keep things a little cooler. Thanks, Ray.
  21. It appears I need a stator.. or I think I do. I changed the regulator for the new one and still no charge. When we test the stator with the bike running and the 3 white wires disconnected we get voltage across any combination of 18 to 40 or more AC depending on the RPM so we thought the stator was fine. BUT if we do a continuity test to ground each of the 3 wires are grounding to the bike which I believe they should not be doing.. So If I need a new stator (the one in is was a new one from Montreal 3 years ago) Which one should I get and from where. Skydoc is reluctant to sell me one of his because I have a Mk1 and apparently the cooling is not as efficient so it could burn out. Any ideas are welcome.. any solution would be helpful... Soon would be good as well due to it being riding season and my better half is already complaining. The bike left us stranded 500 Kms from home and it has NEVER failed us like this before. Actually had to trailer it home.. She groaned about that I'm sure Would really like to have a high output IF POSSIBLE..
  22. OK, maby a Stupid Question : But I have to throw this out there ---------- I just bought a New 2nd Gen RSTD. As to the fuel pump. Being as the fuel tank on this bike is " Above the Carbs " IF--- ( just poseing the question ) here, I run a fuel line from the Petcock, to the Carb s Fuel feed point, will " Gravity Flow " of the fuel keep the bike running ??? Or, put it this way, Is the Fuel Pump, really necessary ???? Has anybody ever tried this, simply as a method to get going out on the road, in the event that the Fuel Pump Fails ??? My thinking here, is to make up a tempory fuel line, to carry in tool kit, just in case fuel pump fails, on highway 50 going across Nevada !!!
  23. When my husband and I were newlyweds, we rode 2 up on a KZ1000. Unfortunately, that bike was stolen 29 years ago. I had always promised him he could get a new bike when the time was right, and this is what we ended up with last week. It has a lot of miles on it but it was well taken care of.
  24. I have the rear wheel and final drive off should it leak oil while off the bike or should it br sealed up?
  25. I'm not lazy, just don't want to cause myself "problems"!! Is someone within a few hundred miles of Columbia, SC skilled in lowering the front of the RSV,, and would do my bike, for a fee (or donation to a favorite charity)? I would like to get my 2009 RSV front lowered some (say 1") and would like a skilled person do the work. I live in Columbia SC and would travel a distance if you are skilled in doing this. (I had my RSTD done and,, I like it!) The rear is already lowered 3/4" (half of the Barons kit). But I would prefer to get that back to stock height and drop the front (not do the small tire thing). So, if this sounds like fun to you, let me know. PM me or post here, let me know. Have bike, will travel. Mike Griswold, Lugoff, SC 29078, just off I-20. mikeginsc@bellsouth.net 803-420-3388
