  1. I have a question about the low fuel light on my 96 RSTD. When I bought the bike the Low Fuel light was on all the time. After removing the tank I found that the wires to the sending unit were not routed right and had been pinched. I cut back the covering and spliced new wires in and rerouted them under the rear tank mount (where they were suposed to be) and the light went out. Now my question is, "When should the low fuel warning light come on?" I have run the bike down into reserve a couple of times and never saw the light come on. When I hit reserve I have around 1 gal of gas left based on the pump and gas milage. I would like to know when I should see the light without tempting fate while in reserve.
  2. Well, after much thought, I decided to let the Yamaha dealer rebuild the carbs for me (96 Tour Classic) as I did not have access to any "O" rings or gaskets or needles and seats and I didn't want to have to deal with that issue. Anyway, Carb rebuild ( mechanic couldn't get the seats out) replaced front tire ( that I supplied) flush the fuel tank, change oil and filters, and just about $825 dollars later, I got my bike back. OH ... yeah ... carbs are still leaking ... here we go on another nightmare. Gotta get it back to them again. Ahh... getting disgusted. As it is idling I can see it dripping from the carbs at a pretty good rate. What I don't understand is, why can't I duplicate this problem by simply turning the key on to "on" and letting the fuel pump fill the bowls. Why wouldn't there be enough fuel pressure to duplicate this with the motor off? I just have the feeling the dealer isn't going to take the time to really look at this the way I would have. I think the gas tank and air box has to come off and then somehow duplicate the leak when you can at least see the darned carbs. I'm so bummed. My wife and I got the bike home, got a baby sitter, hopped on the bike and after driving to the corner on our way to a nice ride, started smelling gas. Turned around, called off the babysitter, and really got bummed out......
  3. All- I recently bought a 1987 Venture Royale which I'm getting the Carbs completely cleaned and rebuilt by one of my VMAX buddies. While I have everything off, I'm replacing the plugs, fuel filter, air filter and the fuel lines. Can anyone tell me what size the fuel lines are? I'm going to look at an auto parts store first. Has anyone had any luck doing that? Bill Hampton, IL
  4. Need help, what is the best way to get to the fuel filter, seems like they built the bike around it. Thanks for all the info. I have gotten on this site. Just greased driveshaft splines they were dry as a bone, never had to do thst on anyother bike I have had.
  5. Hi everyone, I am brand new to this forum. I just purchase a 1993 venture today. I started it up and drove it on the trailer. When I got home (209 miles) it would not start. The engine turns over but does not fire up. The fuel lever in on fuel and the fuel gauge reads half a tank. I am really frustrated and do not know what to do. Can someone PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!! Thanks,:240:
  6. If I turn on the key, and the run switch, the fuel pump will not cycle. I unplugged the connection to the pump, used a circuit tester, and confirmed it is getting power to the connection, and is cycling for about 5 seconds on start up. Plugged it back into the pump, and got nothing with cycling key and run switch off and on. However, did notice the connection started to get hot. Unplugged the connection, ran jumper wires straight to the fuel pump plug, and it just sparks, does not pump at all. Is there a way to rebuild these? Or just replace them? Thanks
  7. I have almost 13K miles on the bike. In the not so distant future, I plan to replace my fule filter since it is cheap preventative maintenance for my bike. I've read about the NAPA 3011 fuel fitler, but not sure if this if for a 1st Gen or 2nd Gen. At any rate, I may opt for an OEM type filter or go for a 'car' fuel filter. What do you guys recommend and the best place to order online?
  8. Can someone help me figure this one out on my 2002 Venture? My low fuel light no longer comes on. My fuel gage still works however it no longer switches over to F and counts up showing how far I’ve gone at my reserve level. I have checked the bulb and it is OK. So my question is this. Is it possible that my fuel-sending unit in the tank is still faulty even though it does work for the fuel gage? What other things should I check before changing the sending unit or how can the sending unit be tested to know if it needs changed?
  9. The 5 gallon aux tank has been received, fitted, and mounted. My 3 gallon aux tank is now boxed up and ready for the next owner that wants to extend their riding range. This tank is a cylinder 8" dia x 16" long with a vented gas cap. It has the fuel line fitting already installed in the bung, an internal baffle, and comes with mounting straps. You can see the design at www.tourtank.com. The mounting used on my Venture was on a shaped board that was bolted to the passenger grab rails (need to remove the pillion seat). Easy to plumb into the main fuel line. All you will need is the mounting board, (4) U-bolts, (4) 1/4-20x1.5" bolts with insert nuts, fuel line, inline fuel filter, a ball valve, brass T-fitting, about 6 feet of 5/16" fuel line, and (6) hose clamps. It works well with gravity feed so no aux fuel pump is required (therefore, no electrical wiring at all). All these components can be purchased at any auto parts and/or hardware store (except the mounting board - you will need to make that - I can provide a pattern). This 3 gallon tank will extend your range about 100 miles depending on your riding style. I am entering some Long Distance riding events this year and needed to maximize my range. The max fuel load allowed in Iron Butt Association approved events is 11.5 gallons (5.9 in stock tank + 5 in new aux tank is close enough without going over). There is an ad in the classified. Ride safe, Ride long. RR http://2000rsv.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Misc/1000702/530232780_kAXFy-S.jpg
  10. Hi all. This is my first post. I wish I had found this forum earlier. I own a 1996 RSTC that my wife and I unfortunately don't get to ride as often as we would like. I always use fuel stabilizer when we store it, but this spring when I started it, fuel was dripping from the carb area. As I said, I wish I had found this forum sooner. I assumed it was gummed up needle and seat, and although I've rebuild a few auto carbs, I've never played with these. After calling the dealer and getting a quite expensive quote, I decided I'd tackle this myself. I removed the carb assembly and I'm going to disassemble them asap. I noticed it is the first carb in line from the inlet of the fuel line that is leaking. I'm a little leery about all this and don't know if I should go all out or just remove and clean the bowl on the one I have now leaking. Also, I'm wondering about a sentence in the Yamaha service manual I purchased with the bike that says don't use any caustic carb cleaners, just use a petroleum based cleaner . I was going to soak the bodies in Delco carb cleaner over night, wash them off in hot water and soap and blow them dry. Now I'm lost as to what to do. I also will try to change the fuel filter, but it looks buried in the frame pretty good. I haven't really looked closely at that situation yet. Any advice would be appreciated. Wish I had known about simply tapping on the bowl or using sea foam (whatever that is, I'll look into that also). Thanks.
  11. wow, I did a beautiful job with the carb synch yesterday. Today I barely got 130 miles from a tank of gas traveling an average of 75-80 mph on the highway.. wow.. now THAT sucks.. =( We had high winds today, but mostly coming from quartering rear, average temps of 45'F.. I know the carb synch was spot on as the buzz in the mirrors is gone and the bike rode smoother than before.. But man, I would typically get 160 miles on the tank before needing to fuel with some to spare, but today, I was down to the last bar or two on the fuel gauge.. that's hard to take.. Do high winds make THAT much of a diff on fuel mileage? I know running at higher speeds will cause it to suck..
  12. 83 xvz12 idle ~1100 #1 balanced at about 4-6 in mercury #3 balanced at about 18-20 in mercury idle screw maxed out up When trying to bring #3/4 down to match #2, can't keep it running, drops idle Needs #1/2 brought up with idle screw, but already max up-screw limit Carbs torn apart and cleaned, new gaskets,orings- but missed main fuel needles at the time, recently found it after removing pressed in needle caps, screws were factory? set under caps a mix from 1/2 to 2-1/2 from bottom, reset all a 2 turns #2 cylinder has less compression than other 3, 150 psi vs 180 psi also carb#3 leaking small drip from top overfill drain Suspect I need to pull carbs again due to #3 fuel leak, and re-adjust float, and clean out needle ports I missed, but not sure that this will let me lower idle screw, while raising #2 vacum? Open up #2 needle for more fuel? Disreguard #2 and match other 3 due to lower compression on #2?? Suggestions???
  13. I'm trying to post this poll based on my recent carb rebuild. Finding rust dust in the carbs. I then emptied the fuel tank. There was a thin scale of rust in much of the tank. I cleaned it good w/rags on end of "rod". I have had my '87 VR since '89. Over the years 90% of the time when the bike is parked over night...the tank is full. Rust is a result of the new ethanol fuels that have found their way to my area about 8 years ago. So it's going to be a issue for all vehicles. Especialy 2 wheeled. OK, all of the choices are based on just cleaning w/rags. NOT etching and sealing the tank. FYI, fuel filters will not catch this stuff. Which one of these makes the most sense to do or not to do after general cleaning ? Should you feel the need...You can choose more than one item in the poll. Thanks in advance...
  14. I have a 2007 RSTD that has developed a problem. Usually it does not sit more than a few days but due to the weather and illness it sat for about 1 1/2 months in a cycle shelter outside. When I fired it up to ride I noticed that when riding with steady throttle the bike would lurch as if suddenly getting fuel. My guess was trash in Carbs. I ran the gas out put in a bottle of seafoam and filled up with premium and rode hard. The bike seemed to clear up but still ran a little flat. So I synched the carbs ( which I do at each oil change) I also checked and cleaned the air filters. Bike seems to run OK but I have noticed that I have lost about 10-12 MPG!!!! I did notice when I synched the carbs that the vent ports used for synching the carbs had a little fuel in them. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this???? I have double checked and resynched the carbs( they were OK) no fuel leaks, air filters clean. The engins seems to run ok so I don"t think that the plugs are bad, they were replaced about 4000 miles ago. Any suggestions on what else to check I really don"t want to go to the stealership but losing 40 miles per tank may be worth it if it comes down to it. Thanks for any help
  15. K, got her buttoned up and started. Was warming her up to start the carb sync. I looked at the temp gauge and it was sitting at the bottom figuring she cant still be that cold. I saw the volt gauge was where it needed to be. I saw one bar on the fuel gauge and then it went to the fuel pump on the center display. Ok, figured it is getting low (prolly is). Anyway, as I glanced over to the Volt gauge, it was on the bottom. When I turn the key on, they both bump up a tad before dropping back down. Headlight, turn signals, brake & brake light, instrument light, center display and tach are working. I did replace the speedo and plate before I buttoned her back up. And I did the fuel tank thing to get a better reading on the fuel display. Ideas?
  16. So I checked out Pinwall/eBay to no avail. I'm trying to find a replacement fuel sending unit for my 1997 RS. I don't have a gauge, just a dummy light...and when it comes to gas... I'm a dummy. (Just ask my wife how many times I've run out of gas less than 1/2 mile from the house.) I can't find the stupid sending unit without paying $70 for it... (add cheap to being a gas dummy) Anyone know where I can find one?
  17. Just joined this site a couple minutes ago. I'm looking to buy a touring bike within the near future. I happen to see a blurb about the new Stratoliner Deluxe but after going to my local dealer found out that the release date isnt until later this summer (???) Picked up a brochuer and found the most amazing bike Royal Star Venture S I was just hoping some of the members here have this bike and could give me a "review" of their own. I need a bike I can be comfortable on for long trips. I'm planning a trip to Alaska within two years. Also my girlfriend wants to start riding with me and her comfort is also a huge factor. What do you like/dislike about this model. Does anybody know if this model will be getting fuel injection in the future?? Hows the power and fuel consumption. Also I noted the seat height at 29.5 inches. I'm only 5'8" with a 30" inseam. Are there any other vertically challenged riders out there with this bike?? Thanks for any info you can send. Ride safe. Stubby
  18. I'm very new to RSV's. I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for. And looked at Venture history. After +/- 2004 did the fuel tank ever change size or shape? Is there somewhere that shows tank emblems and what they indicate?
  19. OK, LD rally season is upon us. I am reviewing my setup and realize a bigger/better aux fuel cell is needed. The IBA rules allow up to 11.5 gallons to be carried on the bike at any time. With the stock tank of 5.9 gallons, this allows 5.5 gallons extra to be carried. My current aux tank is 3 gallons. I am going to upgrade to a 5 gallon tank (don't want to push it and get disqualified due to tolerances). Also, the 3 gallon tank does not have a vent (although it appears to have a vented cap) or a grounding lug. Both these items are required to run in an IBA sanctioned event (or an event that uses the IBA rules). These features are not required to use this tank to run a SS1k or any of the other 'self documented' IBA rides. Only required for the IBA Rally and related organized rallies. Therefore, the current 3 gallon tank is up for sale. It works great to extend your station to station range 50% (to about 300 miles). It is very easy to plumb this into your current fuel line using a simple brass 'T' available at any auto parts store. The tank has an internal baffle to keep the gas from sloshing about. The pictures show the tank mounted on a board with a check valve. I would like to keep the board and check valve (and hose) since the new tank will be the same style - just bigger and with the vent and grounding lug. I will be glad to provide a pattern for the construction of new mounting board. The mounting bands are included. $125 including shipping CONUS. $100 if no shipping required (would prefer this since I suspect UPS will be kind of squimish about shipping a used gas tank). Tanks for looking:smile5: RR
  20. I have a 2007 RSTD pouring fuel. Searched the threads here and figue it is a stuck carb needle. The leak occured after utilizing seafoam. I guess some of the debris it loosened created the sticking needle problem. Dealer wants $648 to fix !! I'm all thumbs with tools so I really have no choice. Any other suggestions? Also, is there anyone in the Central Arkansas area (other than a dealer) than can sync the carbs for me? If so let me know where and when we could meet and a cost. Thank you !! archeryguy
  21. Just bought my first bike-1999 Royal Star Venture. I am about 6'6" tall. When sitting in the seat it tends to push you forward toward the fuel tank. Any ideas or any particular after market seat you guys have had experience with that might help with this problem?
  22. Ok, I just bought (today) an 83 Ventrue. I don't want to sound retarded, but this is the first venture i've had. Does the bike have a fuel petcock to turn the fuel off like most bikes? If it does where the heck is it! I'm having trouble with the bike starting. It acts like it isn't getting fuel, so first thought, fuel is turned off. But then I can't find the petcock. SOOOOOO, any helpful hints, tips, and suggestions would be great. The bike seems to be in pretty good shape, ecspecially considering I only paid $400 for it. Thanks!
  23. I sure hope it's just a fuel filter, or a clogged line, but here's the issue... 7:30am Yesterday morning, on the way to work, I started running out of gas, and felt the usual lack of power. Switched to reserve, and all was well. I wish I had known my low-fuel light didn't work. Stopped & got a full tank at a known-good station (where I fill up the cage every week) and continued another 20 miles to work. 4:30pm I get off work, hop on the bike, start it up, wait about 2 mins for it to warm up, and hit the road... Firing on 2 cylinders. I'll tell ya', this fat V-4 ran like a Honda Rebel 250 with a fat girl on the back. Couldn't break 50mph! It seems like the 2 cylinders on the left side of the motor are maybe starving for gas? They seem to run when I'm idling (pipes getting hot at the same time) but when I twist the throttle more than 1/2 inch the dang thing stops running on the left side... Pop here, pop there... Plugs are good, and they are firing, so I'm pretty sure it's a fuel delivery issue. My oil doesn't smell like gas either. So, not to sound like a complete mechanical idiot, but I have a few questions 1) Where is the fuel filter on a 97 Royal Star? 2) I've taken the tank off before, and only remember 4 bolts (2 near saddle, 1 on each side near forks) Am I forgetting something? 3) After I replace the fuel filter, and verify fuel lines are clear, who wants to come clean my carbs???
  24. Greetings fellas! been working with my father in law on his 1986 venture that we got him for chrismas (sheriff) we removed the gas tank and treated it with the epoxy kit, we removed the exhaust system and cut open the collector and took the baffels out (they where shot) basically rebuilt the collector, pulled the carbs and cleaned them and reinstalled, also we pulled the front brake calipers and are in the process of replacing them with some rebuilt ones. Ok heres where we are at, Got the bike started last night, just put the fuel tank on and hooked up the fuel lines and started it, it started right up, but when you wick the throttle it wants to die, so..... I turn the choke up to about half, and let the rpms build, then when you wick the throttle it seems to run fine, it seems that the left rear carb has a slight backfire. We are going to sync the carbs today and see if that helps, I dont recall seeing the mixture screw when we took the carbs apart to clean them, where do i find them? this whole project started when my buddy (the previous owner) used sea foam, and the next thing ya know, he clogged the crap outta his carbs, so he cleaned the carbs twice it would run fine for about an hour and then start choking, so it was determined that the gas tank was quite rusty. anyways any ideas would be appreciated! Shane
  25. Just purchased an 05 Venture, this bike has been sitting for about a year. The previous owner bought it as a rebuilder, it has some damage on right side, all cosmetic no structural or mechanical. Anyway he said when he bought it he charged the battery and it started right up and ran good. Now it acts as if its not getting gas to the carbs,(fires and chugs some with choke out but wont take off and run) I have no juice to the fuel pump, is there a relay? all the fuses that I can find are ok. I unplugged the pump and hot wired it and it seems to be locked up, wont run acts like a dead short. Any suggestions??
