  1. My 2005 RSTD Rear Shock is toast, and of course is out of warranty. The thought of having a works shock that can be rebuilt makes a lot of sense to me. My question is: Is there any of us second geners that switched from the stock that are sorry they gave up the air adjustable functionality of the stock shock? Also, does anyone know about how long a Works shock lasts before needing a rebuild? I also have noticed a wide variance of how long the stock shocks are lasting for different people. My RSTD has 13,000 miles on it. Has Yamaha corrected the problem with the replacement shocks? The guy at Works asked me if I pull a trailer. I currently do not and don't think that I will, but I did not think that I would have added a Venture trunk either, but I just did. If I add a trailer later, is this something that I can adjust for on the Works shock, or do i have to start over form the design process? Has any of us had any experience with this dilemma, or had the same questions and gotten answers?
  2. I've recently bought a Lees-ure Lite tent trailer and although there appears to be sufficient room for storage of camping gear, etc, I was wondering if anyone has ideas or suggestions of methods to carry all or additional stuff on the top of the trailer? Link to the trailer http://www.leesurelite.com/tenttrailers.asp Here's an idea I had in mind.... to attach one of these to the top... http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/VehicleRacksCarriers/RooftopCarriers/PRD~0401064P/SportRack+18+cu.+Ft.+Enclosed+Car-top+Carrier.jsp?locale=en It would have to be attached in such a way as to easilly remove it and the idea would be to store the lighter and bulkier stuff in it such as clothing, sleeping bags, things a person might want to access easilly while on the road, and what-not. Thoughts, comments, suggestions .... all appreciated.
  3. can anyone tell me the size of bearing buddys for the tag a long trailer from h/f..they gave me 1.98 but are way to loose.

    Vogel

I have the bugs worked out with the lights and trailer and this is what I am towing.
  5. After 1500 miles on my new to me 99 Interstate, I have to say I love this bike. I thought the foot position would be a problem, but it has been surprising comfortable. It does have a mustang seat, great padding, but very little wiggle room, so I will be looking for a ultimate soon. The power on the bike is great, gas mileage was about 32, 29 when flying, but the power of the engine is awesome, great torque, no vibes, and stable at any speed! Not that I would have sped by any means... This bike is just short of perfect for me. New seat, highway pegs, and electric cruise control will just about finish it off. It has all the chrome save for the trunk rack, so that will be next along with a trailer hitch and trailer. It does need a carb sync, tires are new, and the bike had 8500 miles when I picked her up. She will also need new speakers in the near future. All in all, I would rate it a 8.5 out of 10. Thanks again Squid for the assistance in getting it.
  6. Well, I have 10 days off this month, and since my wife went up to Washington to see the grandkids, I planned on taking the bike up to Utah and having my Daughter and family bring her down. We would spend a few days visiting the other two sons and then ride home....Nice try. Now They are towing a pop up trailer down for us to pick up AND the 3 oldest grandkids are coming down to stay for a few weeks. Can you fit a 9,7,and 4 year old in the saddlebags? So I am Caging it to Utah and since I have to tow a tent trailer home, I can't even trailer the bike. I absolutely love my grandkids and look forward to every minute with them...BUT, I really was looking forward to enjoying the ride to and from on the bike.
  7. Yesterday (Saturday)...I saw a Venture ride by as I was trailering my bike back from Custer, SD, after a mechanical failure of the rear end. I am guessing (may or may not be) that it was someone coming back from Cody. My bike is the '09 Seashell/Raven that was on a trailer... Anybody see me?
  8. Got my Venturedad trailer hitch in the mail today.... Took all of 5 minutes to put it on. Now I need to finish the wiring so I can take the trailer on a test run... Thanks for the quick turn-around Venturedad... Robert C.
  9. Drawing was Wed night....so who won??
  10. Actually, the spelling should be ass_me because I can't say anyone else was made an ass of... I bought a little trailer to pull behind my Wing. I thought it would be perfect since the Wing already had an unusual 6 wire weatherproof connector and the trailer was equipped with the same device. I got the bike out and attached the trailer coupler to the hitch ball and was thrilled to see that the trailer tongue was perfectly level. Then I connected the chains and stood back to admire my work. So far, so good. Next, I connected the wire harness and turned the ignition key to on to verify the lights working properly on the trailer. That's when all hell broke loose! As soon as I turned around, I could see dense white smoke billowing out from the under the trunk. I immediately turned the key off and went to assess the damage. When I got to the back of the bike, I could see that the rear lights were still on. HUH? I already turned off the key... I figured (assumed) that somehow the rear lights were getting feedback voltage from the trailer, so I disconnected the wire harness. Nope, still got lights. So, I thought maybe I should start the bike to possibly reset any relays that had gotten stuck. It started right up, but I'm still getting smoke. By now, I'm beginning to panic. After turning the key to off, I quickly yanked the side cover off and pulled the main fuse. But, even that didn't stop the smoke! Now that the battery is exposed, I ran back to the garage for a wrench and disconnected the battery. Finally, the smoking ceases. It seemed like a long time, but this all took place in about 2 or 3 minutes. I opened the trunk but realized that there could be nothing in there causing the problem. I opened the left bag. This is where the previous owner installed 2 additional fuse boxes (for the lighting, audio system, trailer, etc.). I checked everything over and couldn't find any visible indication of extreme heat or any wires hot to the touch. Next step is to remove the rear fender and start following the wire harness. As soon as I got the fender off, I could see the culprit. A trailer wiring harness isolator had been installed. It was now a tortured, twisted mass of plastic, wires, and epoxy. After doing some research online, I could find no 'standard' wiring setup for the harness connector. So, the assumption I made (that made an ass of me) was that they would already be correct. Compounding the issue was that whoever installed the isolator (gotta blame someone!) had put in a 30 amp fuse. The online instructions said 10 amp max. The auxiliary fuse box was wired directly to the battery which is why pulling the main fuse didn't help. The likely culprit for all the mayhem was probably the 6th wire. This is added to a harness where a dome light is being utilized. It is normally wired to be 'hot' when the bike's ignition is in the 'off' position. When I first connected the trailer harness to the bike, it must have fed the dome light voltage back to the output side of the running lights relay in the isolator and then fried it with the contacts closed. I was fortunate that it didn't do any further damage to the bike. The moral of this story? NEVER ASSUME the previous mechanic got it right!
  11. Yes that's right front master cylender went leeked brake fluid on right side pocket lid so im setting around 80 miles north of dealer called them and they have some one fly in the new parts for tomarrow so I will have to drive it there hauling the trailer in the AM. Oh did I mention my phone took a dump to. Called them yesterday FED-X should be here any time with my tenth yes that's right # ten. Droid sucks phone:doh: Dray
  12. I work rotating 12hr shifts so this week I had days off and worked on the bike and trailer, The trailer needed new tires and the wiring for the lights fixed so I sweated my butt off and fixed everything took it for a test ride and everything seems to work fine. I need a sweat pad for my butt on these hot days. I am going to make a pvc grate for the bottom of the cooler so my food doesn't swim in water while I ride. I think the trailer is bigger than the bike, I am ready for my vacation.
  13. Modifying my Harbor Freight (HF) trailer to haul the Rsv to the Cody rally. I have been using it to haul my Seadoo RXP back and forth to the river since 2005 and at 900 lb. its never been a problem. Made a rack for it that is bolted to the top of the trailer. Attempted to put the axle above the springs but changed my mind when i saw a place on the frame that had the paint knocked off due to a hard hit(pothole). So I put axle back under springs. Was worth while as i tore everything apart cleaned and repacked wheel bearings and used marine grade grease. The mods made are: 1. Installing pressure treated 2x4 cut down "in" the last rear portion of the frame 2. 1 piece of 3/4" pressure treated plywood.(OVER EXISTING 1/16 DIAMOND steel) ** 1&2 were done as i worried about all of the pressure the wheels would put at just one point on trialer ** 3. Getting rid of the old ratching winch and replacing with a HF remote control 3000 lb. electric winch with a marine battery and box. 4. Installing a motorcycle front wheel chock from HF. 5. Installing a spare tire holder from HF. 6. need to find a +5 rise 1 1/4" hitch bar so the Toyota Corolla 11" top of receiver will yeild a level trailer 16" at tongue.
  14. I looking for a clean and professional look when I mount the 5 flat plug on the bike. Have looked at the back of my 08 RSV and can't seem to decide how or where to mount the plug. I'm pretty picky, but know there are others on here that are picker than I and also wanted a clean look. So the question is how and where did you mount your trailer plug. Thanks.
  15. Finally got a chance to pic up our trailer. Its an 02 Aluma MCT. We've been looking to add one and were able to find this one 50 miles from home at 2/3 what the dealers wanted for them. Just need to get a hitch and wire the Venture and were ready to roll. The wife can't wait. Now she can pack the essentials like extra shoe's!
  16. Are there ANY US members near the east end of Lake Ontario willing to help me out. I'm thinking I want to leave my bike trailer at your place for a couple of weeks, during which time I will take it apart. Then I will import trailer "parts" in 2 different trips. Anybody willing to help?
  17. I'm looking for a cargo trailer to haul my RSV in and just looking for some tips from people that have bought them. Things like "if I was to buy another one, I'd make sure it had..." I'd like it as light as possible, but also want something that's good quality as I plan on having it for a long time. Looks like Featherlight, Wells Cargo, and USCargo are out there...not sure which others. I'm sure I'll get flamed from people saying I should just ride the bike. But there are times when it'd be nice to haul the bike from ND to the south and then explore from there (like January when it's -30 degf)!
  18. Just wondering if anyone has a trailer hitch that would fit on my wife's 83 venture royal. We are new to the wounderful world of motorcycling. We are eager to go camping with our venture. Are you aware of another hitch that might fit. thanks very much T-man.
  19. What have I gone and done!!!!:mo money: I just bought this....not a BAD price...not spectacular. ebay ad # 110707308624 Now...can anybody tell me what I have to do to bring a bike and trailer to Canada from the states? That makes 3!!!!!
  20. This will be the "final" official countdown thread. I have asked the moderator's to "close off" the other 3 or 4 threads regarding the Cody Trailer Grand Prize Raffle for 2011. Those threads will not be deleted - just closed to additional input - so everyone is on the same page. Thanks, everyone, and good luck. As of 5/31/11 - 9AM PST, there are now 33 tickets left.
  21. Yep, that's all the time left to order VR International T-Shirts. July 1st is the deadline. The reason is in order to get the shirts to the See the CODYFlyer for all the info, and the Pre-Registration Form for sizes and prices. There are still a few Trailer Tickets left... I think?? I you do decided to add trailer raffle tickets to your form, and the 300 have been previously spoken for, we'll refund that part of your Paypal payment. So don't be bashfull.... These Cody T's are really cool... :cody
  22. http://www.coolwingrider.com/ Have any of our members tried these? I have the water soak vests but I don't like getting saturated so I ordered the 2 up special hoping these will work OK. I had about decided to trailer to Cody because of the heat but now I may ride if these work out like a few have said they do. Anyway if I don't like they say return for refund.
  23. I've been struggling with a problem in my head and hope that some of you with experience pulling a trailer can help me. I understand the reasoning behind safety chains when towing a trailer with a car or truck. If the coupler slips off the ball, the tongue will be caught by the crossed chains and when the tow vehicle brakes are set, the trailers inertia will force the tongue under the bumper to the extent the chains allow before the braking will affect the forward momentum of the trailer. I had that happen one time when towing a U-haul across Texas over black ice. Take my word for it...that was a scary situation. Fortunately, I didn't have to change my shorts when all the excitement was over. They had mysteriously disappeared! Now to my struggle. In my mind's eye, I'm trying to picture exactly what would happen in a similar situation on a bike. It's not such a pretty thing. It seems to me that once brakes are applied on the bike, the tongue will move forward under the momentum of the trailer until the forward edge of the coupler makes contact with the rear tire. It would seem that when that contact occurs, the tire would pick up the tongue and force it into the bottom of the rear fender...repeatedly. Or worse, if there was enough force, it might even raise the back tire sufficiently to lose traction. It might even cause a vertical jack-knife. Now, I want to do some MC camping this fall and I'm committed to pulling this trailer. You can bet that I will check, double-check and recheck at every stop to make sure all is well. But, can anyone dispel my worst case scenarios?
  24. I bought the Alumna Trailer from a forum member here and I proceeded to do the wiring after many posts read and a few pm's.... Changed the 5 pin round on the Alumna over to a 5 pin flat and same for RSV...Decided to do wiring at the tail light because of existing wiring under seat for the lightbar under the trunk (not a lot of room left)...Wired her up and everything work..... After a couple of days gone by I have my Bud over to show off my new toy....Turn the bike on...Start the bike....Reach under the fender near the hitch...grab the bike end of five pin connection and I happen to "touch" in the the bottom of the fender while reaching for the trailer end of the connection and ":puzzled:"...I blow the 15amp fuse for the lights....Replace the fuse and do this again ON PURPOSE and "same thing"....I replace the fuse....being more careful not to touch the bike end to anything and hook up the trailer and ALL IS WELL.... Question: Before I go into the rear light assembly and wire...What should I check first. I do not really want to go through everything again if I can avoid it.... TKS... Long Tall Lynchburg, VA:fingers crossed:
  25. I am finishing up the electrical wiring for a trailer. The trailer has independent turn signals and all lights are LEDs. I have read many of the threads about hooking up to the bike's electrical and notice almost all talk about tapping into the wiring under the seat. I have an 08 RSV and my question is: has anyone tapped into the harness behind the licence plate? I was going to make 2 into 1 water proof bullet connector adapters so not to have to splice into wires for the bike's female trailer plug. (running, brake, 2 turn signals, then a ground) and if anyone has Pros or Cons as to why one hook up is better or worse / under the seat vs behind the licence plate, it will help me decide. (i wired my gold wing up to the harness behind the rear tail light cluster and never had any issues) Thanks, Shamue
