  1. Hi to all I hesitated to post this but thought it might be of interest to some RSTD owners. I have posted about the whine and the help I got from using Motorkote in the engine and the post on this topic has many interesting comments. Now to my latest adventure..... Several weeks ago I was riding to work early am and the windshield completly fogged and misted over. I could not see anything in front of the bike. Yikes! I started doing some internet and forum searches and found that having a windshield as tall as the RSTD is can be dangerous in these conditions. I KNOW THIS IS A PERSONAL PREFERENCE AND I AM JUST POSTING MY OPINION! Everyone has to make their own minds up. How and when you ride will effect your preferences. I purchased a windshield off ebay for $24.50 that was supposedly damaged and was pleasantly surprised that it only had very minor scratches on it. This gave me a cheap backup to have in case I did not like the modification to the height of the existing stock shield. I determined for me that cutting off 4" gave me what I was looking for. It turns out that height was perfect and I am happy with the modification I did. (there are posts on how to do this and was very easy to do) When I took it for a long ride I immediately noticed that I had to really concentrate to hear the whine. It appears that the changes in the aerodynamics of the shield also acted as a buffer against the noise. Don't get me wrong the whine is still there but is now more of a normal engine mechanical sound that just seems to get swallowed up in the other ambient noises of air, engine and the pipes. I am amazed that there could be this much change from just lowering the shield. I can now see over the shield and don't experience much difference in the ride on the highway as far as buffeting is concerned. It is not the coccoon that it was but I feel as if I am still getting the benefits of the shield. This combined with the Motorkote has changed the annoyance of this terrific machine into something that I know is there but will be able to accept and deal with. Again, I am not trying to force my opinions on any of you and there is no garantee that any will experience the changes I got from this modification. I do believe that seeing over the shield offers a level of safety in certain conditions (which my New England climate gives me in both the early fall and spring each year) that can not be achieved with the stock height windshield. The bonus of the noise changing was completely unexpected! Just some ideas to throw in the cat box, it will either just lie there, get covered up or watch out the litter will fly! Have a great fall and be safe Dan
  2. Are you using windshield bags on your second gen? If so what are your thoughts, how was the installation, and where did you get them? I would like to have black leather studded bags that seal pretty well if I add them, and do not want to mess up the windshield mounting area...
  3. What is the best way to remove a decal from a windshield?
  4. I thought I would post it here first. Parting out an '86 VR 1300. I have almost all the plastic. Some needs to be repaired. Have everything for a complete rebuild. Black and gold. Both saddle bags, bottoms and lids, trunk, purple color from '89 VR. All front fairing parts plus vents. Windshield stock height and in good condition. All braces for fairing. Let me know by PM and I will answer all with what I have. Chuckles
  5. I was thinking about getting a new windshield mine has some scratches on it. Can you all post some info on the best and where to get it for the best deal I want the same size as stock. Thanks
  6. I know, this has probably been addressed on one or more of these umpteen thousand threads, but I've been reading posts here for the last 7 hours and figured I'd just come out and ask... There is apparently three(?) methods to measure your windshield. #1. The Clearview way (from dip in front of gas cap vertical). #2. From bottom edge of windshield to top edge. #3. from top edge of chrome strip to top edge of windshield(mounted). Now this has become confusing to me when I read all the posts about personal preferences in windshield heights and retailer descriptions of product. What my 08 RSV came with measures 22" (#1. above), 17" (#3. above). I don't have a measurement for #2. above since the shield is still mounted. So,,,, is this a 'stock' windshield? My intention is to procure a shorter windshield to be able to see over the top when needed. In which case the msrmnts would be; 18" (#1. above) or 11" (#3. above). Of course that's solo, when two-up the line of site thru the shield drops about an inch or so. Am considering the Showchrome 13", is that 13" #1,2,or 3 method?? Where does "4 inches shorter than stock" fit in here? It sure would be nice if there was only ([{ 1 )]} standard used. Can ya help a brother out, huh, can ya? ;-)
  7. I found a 2003 yamaha roadstar windshield in the local want ads, but would have to drive about 110 miles to pick it up, so I thought I would ask everyone in here first. Does anyone know if it will fit my 97 Royal Star Tour Deluxe? I have the four mounting bolts and lowers. WIll these holes line up properly? I also need a backrest, so if anyone knows where to get an inexpensive version, please let me know. Thanks for any assistance and insights. Robert
  8. I recently bought a new windshield for my 05 RSTD. And I thought I'd pass on the info on where I bought it. He sells on ebay or not. He said that he worked for a windshield manufacturer for years and now he started manufacturing his own windshields. many sizes, two widths, and the price is much less than the other manufacturers. For me, that mattered. But more importantly, the quality is awesome. I have had mine on now for a good 2,000 miles, and I have nothing negative to say about it. All of the holes bolted right up to my hardware and clipped right on the bike. I did clip it on the bike before I tightened up the bolts to get the correct line up. I had cut my stock shield down 6" and wanted a stock shield for cooler weather. I ended up buying one that is 2" shorter than stock, and am very happy with it. I have cleaned it, used plexus on it and it looks like new. In fact, one week after he had sent it, he called me to see how I liked it. At that point I had just taken a 1,000 mile ride. His site is: http://www.7jurock.com Steve
  9. I knew that plastic Venture rider card would come in handy. I forgot my keys so i used your card to open the back door of my house The card is vey useful I scraped the bugs of my windshield Used it as a fan Here's a photo Dray soliciting his card to a member 99 silver,, :rotfl:
  10. I am wondering if anyone would know where or if you can get a single or multi pouch windshield bag for the 2nd gen RSV's? I saw one in a picture on Diamond R's website in the photo gallery, but am unable to locate one on the web. Any ideas???
  11. Paula is fine, she has a few scrapes on her elbow and leg, but all in all she is doing great, she was up and around when we got back to the cabin and got up Sat. morning and fixed breakfast for us and helped out with more registrations and serving food, she is one tough lady. I ought to know she bullies me around all the time..............the bike is okay, just a broken windshield and a couple of small scrapes on the front fender. She went down in soft shoulder that was freshly laid down.
  12. My stock windshield was starting to get a bit hazy. It was high enough that if the sunlight or bright headlights hit the shield i couldn't see anything. So I cut the bottom 1.75" off of the screen with a cutoff wheel and redrilled the holes. Now the top of the screen is right at the 2 second following distance when I am sitting comfortably and riding at 65mph. The wind blast is about 1/2 inch above my helmet. At 75mph the windblast is just touching the top of my helmet with no extra noise. For now I like it, I will report back in about 3 weeks. Pictures available Saturday.
  13. I rode my bike to work this morning. The fog was thick and about 3 or 4 inches up the center of the windshield the dew would not blow off. It was rolling off of it ever where else. I was running about 70 mph. Is there something to put on it so that it won't stay on the windshield? thanks tim
  14. I cut 5 inches off of my stock windshield. It looks really good and I can see over it at night (big improvement). My problem is now there is quite a bit of wind turbulence (noise) on the top of my helmet. I am 6'2" with a 35 inch inseam. I have a double-bubble on my ZX11D7 and it really reduced wind noise. Does anyone make a double-bubble style windshield for the Gen I VR?
  15. Has anyone out there put on the aftermarket 4" shorter by 2.5" wider windshield? How does it compare to the OEM?
  16. Kevin (Leadwolf56) just called me from Gatlinburg and he has a broken windshield on his 2nd gen. Do we have any members in the area that may be able to help him out? Anyone in the area have a spare windshield or know of a dealer in the area that may have one? He doesn't have internet access while there. I have his phone number is 574-612-3837. Dennis
  17. My windshield got damaged and need a new one. I just put an ad in the classifieds looking for a stock windshield. If you have one, please let me know. Thanks, Steve
  18. I've been blessed with an 06 RSTD with the traditional whine. Here's what I've noticed and maybe its been around and I got left out. I put the 21" clearview on for a week of riding and I began to notice halfway into the trip that the whining became very loud. After returning home I put my stock windshield on that has been cut down 4" and noticed that about 60% of the whine went away. Not that the windshield had anything mechanically to do with it but, I suppose the sound was echoing off the taller windshield. Maybe I'm crazy, but, it sure is alot quiter with the shorter windshield.
  19. Anyone have a 7" or 9" 2nd gen windhsield for sale?
  20. Hmmmmm..... All of these posts about too much lean angle. I am always worried that my 88 V1 will tip over to the right side when parked on the side stand. What is the "correct" lean angle? When I stop I have to lean the bike to the right past the CG to get ground clearance to get the SS all of the way down. It only takes about 10 lbs of force to bring the bike up off the side stand to the CG. A 5 year old girl has no problem tipping it over on the right side with one hand. Unfortunately I learned this. When I park on the side stand I always have to pull the bike hard to the left after the SS is down to raise the suspension as much as possible. I always worry about the wind blowing it over to the right. There is almost no slop in my SS, the bolt is tight and not bent, and the SS does not appear to be bent, but I have nothing to compare it to. I do still have all original springs and shocks. Where I live I have no garage just an 8x10 steel shed and the windshield just clears the door top by less than 1/8 inch. I had to remove the pan head screw in the middle of the door frame for windshield clearance, it is that close. The bike handles and rides fine with the suspension as is, if I put in new progressive springs or raise the shock pressures, it will sit higher, and lean better, but NOT fit thru the door to my storage shed. It can not be left/kept outside overnight or the insurance co will be very unhappy with the replacement cost, and I really do not want to cut the top of the windshield or door frame either. I was debating milling off the bottom of the SS and welding a new pad on a little higher to get some more lean angle. I can also then make the pad a little bigger to help when parked on grass or very hot asphalt. (Yes I do carry a 4 inch round chunk of sheet metal for parking on soft surfaces). Anyone else ever mess with this issue?
  21. The windshield on my Royal Star has a hazy film on it. What is the best way to get a clear view again?
  22. I am trying to install the two moles on top and bottom of the front chrome windshield trim. Has anyone come up with a good adhesive to hold these in place?
  23. I switched out of my factory windshield that was cut down 4" for the 21" clearview with the vent and light tint. Much smoother ride! I read a post where someone had stated that the taller the windshield equaled less buffeting. It definitely cut the buffeting by 75% at 70mph. I can now ride at 75 mph (correct speedometer) and not have the buffeting as before. The main reason I cut my factor shield down 4" was I felt like I was either trying to look over or under it. With the 21" I have no problem looking thru it. I would definitely recomment the vent, it allows alittle bit of air to come thru to damper the vacumm effect. Not sure what it'll do to my fuel mileage, but so far I'm very pleased with their product and craftmanship.
  24. This morning my daughter and son-in-law were going to Atlanta on I75 in their car. They were next to a tractor trailer rig when a tire blew on the rig. The tire hit their windshield and it shattered the windshield and glass went inside the their car. They can't drive the car until the windshield is repaired. If they were on a motorcycle it would probably have killed them.
  25. The muffinman picked up a really nice windshield cover for Big Tom to go with the theme he's had for a while now. Also he tried on the new cover to see how it fit him. Plus he did show off a pair of the thongs he got from his secret admirer's. So without further ado here's Big Tom. Not for viewing by impressionable children. Margaret
