  1. Title says it all. I got a ride planned March 27-30 if anyone is interested. I'm gonna leave Northern Virginia on Saturday morning (27th) and head down to either Boone or Hickory, NC. I am supposed to meet my dad and a buddy there for 2 days of riding in the mountains i.e. Blue Ridge Parkway and possibly The Dragon. Camping is an option if the weather is condusive for it. I'll head back toward the DC area on Tuesday the 30th. If you'd like to ride with us, you're more than welcome! Look forward to possibly meeting anyone between here and there. More details to follow closer to the date. Ben
  2. Would someone that has a Yamaha tool p/n YU-01268, ring nut wrench, and could measure a couple of things on it please PM me ? Picture of it is attached below. The RSV & the 86-93 Venture manuals shows this tool being used in the 'Periodic Inspections and Adjustment' section under 'Chassis - Steering Head'. I am looking at getting some of these made and need two measurements from the "official" tool. This tool allows the torque to be set on the steering head bearings without guessing at it. I have several contacts that have CNC laser and/or high definition plasma cutters that could make these. I want to get quotes on this item before I put it out there to see how much interest there would be in them. This tool should work on all 83-09 models. Gary
  3. Getting ready to jump in the shower, no water!!!:scratchchin: First thing going through your head is, is the water bill paid? Answered that by looking at the meter going 90mph . Must have caught it right after it happened 'cause I don't have a lake anywhere yet, It's raining cats and dogs , guess I'll tackle that in the a.m. Bummer, I hate getting dirty:bang head:
  4. Just wondering if anyone has found a magic bullet for warm riding gear for the face. I have a good balaclava that does a good job but my forehead will start killing me within 30-60 minutes and I have to remove the thing. The fat head thing makes it get too tight in the helmet. I'd like to find something that I can wear around the neck and comes up to cover the chin area and even the nose if necessary. I rode today and the chin area was by far the coldest part on me.
  5. In addition to our RSV, We also have a "50" Ford fullblown custom convert. Chopped/sectioned/lowered/molded/louvered etc etc.....The RSV is all bundled up for the winter but, being a restless one, I had some "under the car" issues I wanted to address before spring. ! I wanted to re-route the floor shift cable as it seemed to bind a bit.The car is LOW, really LOW. I jacked the car up just enough. I let my neighbor borrow my "creeper" (don't remember when) so, I had to wiggle my way under. Ok, trouble light in place, all the tools I "think" I'll need and under I go. As I suspected, the shift cable needed to be moved to the outside of a support bracket. Now, I've got about 5 or 6 inches between my head and the frame, as I reached up to loosen the bracket for the re-route, lifting my head off the floor about 3in, a small piece of dirt/something became dislodged. As normal, (?) it was right in line with my cheek just below my right lower eyelid. My head was now somewhere between that 5 and 6 inches from the frame as I had my head off the floor about 3. As the little foreign piece of whatever hit my face, I involuntarily jerked back causing my head to smack the concrete floor. Of course the immediate reaction was to snap back causing my forehead to smack the frame which caused a reaction to jerk back as I once again hit the floor and returned to the frame for one more self destructing thump before I could stabilize. I lay there for a moment amused with a vision of my head as a "ping pong" ball under there. I managed to squirm out from under a bit perplxed, actually a bit dazed. I have a small red scraped spot on my forehead not unlike that little red dot on an Indian Believer. I'm thinking of a "lift" and I want my creeper back "JEFF"! Renne
  6. There appears to be no more country music stations in the toronto plus area of southern ontario. 95.3 just got bought out by the same head banging music supporter that killed the last country music station some 15 years ago. It seems like all you get any more in this area is either head banging crap. so called dance music or asian music. I love country music and I love early rock and roll but nobody seems to want to play it anymore.
  7. Today was WONDERFUL day for the most part. We went for a nice lunch with another couple then the 4 of use went for a nice ride out in the country. Perfect weather! As we came down a road, there was a dog in the street as in ready to chase us. I slowed to about 40ish. I figured he would hang off to the side and run along side like they always do. - WRONG!!! The darn dog jumped at my bike and caught my Left Kurykan footpeg and my heel in the head. I heard the yelp and felt my heal on his head. I was scared he was going to get under the bike. If he did, I think we would have gone down, as he had to weigh 60ish lbs. The couple behind us said that he had to have had his neck broken. We didn't stop, (should we have?). I don't know what we could've done other than watch him die. My wife was VERY upset and I didn't want to make matters worse. I was really kinda in shock about the whole thing. We are BIG dog lovers. I just can't believe that he jumped at the bike. I've never had one do that before. They always stand off to the side and just run alongside and bark. I'm somewhat angry that the owners let the dog run free when they probably knew that he liked to chase! I've gone over it in my head all day, and I honestly believe there is nothing I could've done to avoid it, other than riding a different road. I'm sure this makes me sound like a puss, but it is upsetting. craigr

  12. Chart below shows my valve clearances. 1983 venture, 36,000 miles Cold engine, setting on workbench. Should I be concerned due to rear head being tighter than front head. The #2 inboard intake is tighter than my smallest feeler of .0015" Should I change the ones that are just outside spec.? I have 3 intakes at .10mm,, spec is .11-.15mm ?? Next, I have seen in other threads that there is a loaner valve kit available. Who would I contact about using this?? http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/valveclearance.jpg Gary

  15. Well its almost time for the Lone Star Rally in Galveston Tx. Its Halloween weekend as always. I was wondering who is interested in going. I am leaving early Sat morning to head down to Galveston and have a room reserved on the SeaWall for Sat night. Anyone interested in meeting up and riding down there together? My room is at the Best Western and I will have a spare bed if anyone decides they want to stay the night. I hear that past crowds for this event has been up to 400k people :wow:with every kind of bike imaginable and tons of things to look at and do. Let me know if you want to meet up and head down there. :hurts:
  16. Well first off no my electric is fine, no water leaks and no I didn't get anything else in my ear. Though this one would have hurt pretty good. I opened the door this afternoon and saw a snake at my door. So I slammed the door shut and try to look out the window to see what sort it is. Can't see the head but it looks like a black snake. But of course with my luck it's better to be safe then sorry and driving to the emergency room for antivenin. I search the house to see if there's anything I can use to get rid of this critter, can't find anything. Look back out no snake on the porch, wonder where it went. I found it on the table outside the window. Now on the upside it's definitely a black snake. Still don't want to get bit though. So I get my stuff together and head out the door only to see no snake. Now I'm wondering where it went again. So I carefully head to the car making sure it's just dirt under my feet. Don't know where the snake is but I guess the temps of 80 made it nice enough to come out today. Of course tomorrow it's gonna be back in the 60's so I shouldn't see it again. Mind you none of the cats that hang out in my yard were anywhere to be seen. At least they could show up when I need them. They will go after snakes I've watched them do it before. Just evidently not when I'm trying to come out of the house. Oh I didn't use the gun cause I have cinder blocks for a porch that would have been messy. Figured I'd share to give you all a nice laugh. Mind you I didn't laugh when I first opened the door and saw the snake. Margaret
  17. Can I replace the valve(rubber and stem) without taking the tire off the rim Thanks!
  18. :farmer:Thanks to this group I determined my left bank exhaut at the Y was cracked and will soon be repaired under warranty. For the last 7K miles I have been smelling exhaust more than normal, but I could not pick up the odor close to the head connections. Put my hand under the Y and low and behold the leak showed its ugly head. Had no other indication, ie noise, etc. Hope others will check as I did. My bike is an 05 liquid silver. Love it, love it. 14k miles and this is only warranty work.
  19. My Zumo decided today that it will pick an icon for me and hold it. Won't let go of it. If I push another it bounces back and forth but will just stop on one like your holding your finger on it. Tried reset ,battery removal and updating. Nothing worked yet. Anybody else seen this behavior ? I don't mean me beatin my head against the wall...
  20. Not being the kinda' guy that likes to do things the easy way,But always looking to save a few bucks I purchased a set of Carb. Diaphragms off of Ebay a while back. ($86.00 with shipping) I thought I would give you a run down on how that went. After removing the False Tank cover and both side covers as well as the lower fairing legs on both sides I was able to get to all 4 Carbs. easily. To remove the Carb. covers I used 3 tools, a 1/4 inch drive ratchet with a special Torx bit on it for the 4 odd screws, an impact driver with a Phillips bit in it and finally a pair of Vise Grips for 2 of those Phillips head screws that just wouldn't come out. I took out the Torx head screws first on all 4 carbs. because when you remove the last Phillips head screw, you better have your catcher's mit on, that Carb. cover is coming off...FAST! I had set up 4 shop towels on my bench and kept all of the Carb. parts separated. I held each slider assembly up to a good light to inspect them and sure enough all 4 diaphragms had holes in them. I removed the old Carb. diaphragms by gripping the slider and "rolling" the old diaphragm out from between the two flanges on the slider. Two of the old diaphragms came off in pretty bad shape. I then cleaned all of the reusable parts with Carb. cleaner , but I must say that overall everything looked pretty clean. All 4 of the sliders were nice and smooth as were the Carb. bodies on the engine. I used a clean cloth and Carb. cleaner to clean out the Carb. body bores. (I don't use paper towels for this as I would not want a shard of paper ending up in the intake or the Carb. body) With everything clean I moved on to the reassembly. The Ebay diaphragms were not made of the same material as the stock Yamaha ones, but were very pliable, and had the tab for alignment in the Carb. body. After lubing the diaphragm with aerosol spray silicone I inserted the slider into the bore of the diaphragm. When I got to the flange, I stretched the diaphragm bore over the bottom flange. Now the spacing on the two flanges of the slider seemed a bit "slim" and I panicked for a moment but realized that by using my thumb nail I could wedge the diaphragm bore between the two flanges with no problem. When all was said and done you couldn't tell that the diaphragms and the sliders were not mated at the factory. I had the slider needles out for another project I will discuss later and at this point I reinstalled them. I put the slider assemblies back in the Carb. bodies aligning the tabs, put the caps on with the Stainless Steel Allen Head Cap Screw set I have listed in the classifieds and reinstalled all of the body parts and that as they say was that! Oh yea, I accidentally spilled some paint on the Carb. caps...Oops! I have attached some pics below and am willing to chat with anyone that is interested in this rebuild. Feel free to PM me. Sorry this got a bit "windy" Earl
  21. So I got my new fuel sending unit and went to install it and found that when I was trying to take my tank off, like I have done many times already, a head of one of the hex head bolt/screw that goes in the front of the tank has been rounded out. I don't know how it happend, when I put it back together last time I didn't notice any slop or anything but when I went to loosen it up, I just spun round and round. I have tried: 1) vice grips and pliers - nothing will grab onto that round head. 2) Easy-out/screw extractors (a few different types including the kind you drill into the screw and then back out and the kind that is supposed to grab onto the head and back it out) none worked - the head of the screw just didn't grab like it should. 3) take grinder and cut slots into the head suitable for a flat head screwdriver - did not work; as I try to use the screw driver to back the bolt out it just breaks the head up even more. I had thought about cutting the head of the bolt off completely and then try to maneuver the tank support out and over it (then I could get the bolt out because I would be able to grip it), but I don't think there is enough play in the tank to do that (as it would have to go ~1 inch to one side and it is just too tight of a fit). I am just plumb out of ideas - any thoughts would be appreciated.
  22. I put a new set of tires on my 02 midnight 5000 k ago rear is now down to the wear bars, we are doubled up 90% of the time, I know the steering head bearings need to be changed. Could this have caused the quick wear?
  23. we go by. The wife and I are leaving Saturday on our annual bike vacation. Had planned to do West Virginia but the weather is too cold for my better half. So we decided to ride the Trace to Natchez, MI and go over to Gulfport for a couple of days. We are staying at the Naval Base since a two room suite is only $59 and no tax. Will head back to Tennessee via Montgomery, Al and Columbus, GA. If you see a fast BLACK Midnight go by pulling a Piggy Backer--toot your horn.
  24. Yesterday I had a female friend ask me what "size" the Venture was. I explained to her that it had a 1300cc engine. She said "Oh, that's small enough for me to handle". I told her that it was a VERY heavy bike. She then proceded to inform me that she had she motorcycle license and said "The weight doesn't matter, as long as it has a small engine, I can handle it". :bang head: I didn't even bother to waste my breath trying to explain the difference. Needless to say, she WILL NOT ride it. :no-no-no:
  25. Although this is my first post here, I have been able to find all the answers to my questions/problems over the last few months. However, I have a doozy. A couple of months ago I ended up pulling the engine out of my '89 VR because it had a bad head gasket. Eventually, I got everything back together and the engine back in the bike. Last week when I went to start it, something just didn't seem right. I thought I had air leaks around the manifolds. The o-rings were new but I pulled the manifolds off and put gasket sealer on them anyway. I still couldn't get any readings on the front carbs to synch them. It has spark and fuel, but very little, if any, dancing of the carb sliders. As it turns out, I have high pressure air coming out of both of the vacuum ports on the front head. My question is, are my front cams 180 out? I was careful with the timing marks when putting the cams back in. Or could it be something else? I certainly appreciate any advice given here. Steve
