I have found form this, and other bike related forums that I have belonged to, that the "experts" here have more experience with the reality of the bike(1) than do the so-called dealer mechanics at out local stealerships. We used to have good little dealerships for each brand of bike and you could talk to the mechanics and they knew their stuff. Now we have SlimeNow stealerships and most of their parts people, mechanics and salespeople are young kids without real experience and they NEVER have even common parts available. Most of it comes from the the ones who have decided ( for what reason I will never understand) live where that white crap lays all over the ground for months on end and they are able to constantly tear down and repair/modify/document their bikes. The repair threads usually explain more in simple language than the manuals do. The "modified" tools are cheaper and easier to get/use than the "dealer" tools. Plus we can do it all while teasing the slower Generation...you know..the 2nds... (1) Reality of course is in the mind of the beholder... like those 2nd Gens that fantasize that they are faster than a 1st Gen....

Setting the carbs
KIC replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I moved up to 36 on the 2nd tank and am now on my 3rd tank. I really have ridden this tank easy. No high RPMs or heavy throttle usage and it seems like I may doing much better. I am at 110 and just hit 2 bars. My bars don't seem consistent as I was at 65 + miles before I lost the 1st bar then it would start dropping faster the lower the bars went. No SeaFoam in last tank or this tank. -
Okay.. as most know I just finished the overhaul of my front forks including the installation of Progressives ( man, are they worth it !!) . I had a question about the fork oil and from what I was told there was 2 ways to determine the "amount" of oil. First was the amount of 409cc's or 13 1/2 oz. The second, was 5 1/2 -inches from the top. The 5 1/2 inches was what most threads stated and what the instructions stated. That is what I installed the oil to. It was way more than 409cc's. Now, yesterday we installed Progressives in my friend's 83. We measured and installed 409cc's in each tube. They were not even, even close to even. So we pumped the lowers and then remeasured and the levels were even but not to 5 1/2 inches, more like 6 1/2+ inches below the top. Now, we read the manual, the threads, the Progressive instructions, and all though they all state to "pump the lowers to extract the old fluid, none state to pump the air out to measure the new fluid. It was obvious that when we installed his oil, air bubbles must have affected the 5 1/2 inch reading and leveled it out after pumping the air out. None of the info we could read, stated what the level from the top should be once they are "pumped" For example, if you just wanted to check you levels of existing oil, to what level should the oil be at from the top ?? It seems that there should be a level statement as to before pumping and after. I had the same issue of non level measurements when I poured in my oil before pumping the lowers. It probably took about 15 + oz to level mine out to 5 1/2 inches below. We left his at 6 1/2 inches below with the original 409cc's. So what am I missing here ?

So I had a lot of running around to meetings today so I took the 89. I have yet to see another 1st Gen in town. Got to one of the Defense Contractors and parked in the front lot in the cycle parking. And there she was...obviously separated at birth, born to different mothers, was my brunette's twin.

My 89 same thing. If the starter switch doesn't return all the way...no headlight.

Thank you sir !

So I have been wondering what these clip type things are on each side of my fairing ? And there are male ends of "snaps" mounted directly under them .

Guess it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase...." Brain Freeze"... and you didn't even get it from Ice Cream.... Too funny...

I recently saw a link to search Craigs List on one of these threads but can not find it. I thought I bookmarked it but obviously didn't do that either. Could someone please post the link for that national search ? Thanks.

If I read his thread correctly, he is trying to solve his issue and have a great, fast and classy bike...not add to his problems and lower his lifestyle... -
Geez... and not one comment on how it will be slower than a 1st Gen and not as cool. Where is Yammer Dan when you need him ?? Buy it..we need more 2nd class mem....uh I mean 2nd Gen members....

Setting the carbs
KIC replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I got 34 MPG on my 89 when I filled up today. This is lower than I was getting on past tanks. I'm thinking that SeaFoam lowers the mileage. I went heavy on the Seafoam on the last tank. The tank I filled up with today will not have any additives. We'll see if it makes a difference. -

Try soaking them in Pine Sol if you take them off. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54671 You can also do a "soak" as described to me by Yammer Dan : " Fill the carbs and leave them sit a while. I mix Sea-Foam with about 1/3 to 1/2 to fresh gas, open carb drains and get what you can out that way, pull the line off the rear of the fuel pump, clamp it off with a pair of vice grips. You try to use the petcock on one that has been sitting that long you will probably break it. Use a extra piece of line to put in the Sea-Foam and hook it to fuel pump. Close carb drains start bike and run til you are sure carbs are full of mixture. Shut off and leave sit at least overnight.Sea-Foam and gas combo makes it easier to restart. I have used pure Sea-Foam but they don't like to run on it, makes restarting hard.Knocking all that crud loose is a good way to ruin a set of plugs. Use some old ones. I keep Autolite plugs around for ones I'm working on. $1.50 or so each don't break you up when you ruin them. Just flooding them with the gas we have now seems to kill them. This may keep you from having to pull the carbs. I hate pulling those things. " Good luck -
Hang in there and keep up the physical rehab.. even when it hurts, or seems to not be helping. Been there...done that... Good luck !

50mph Crosswinds. How do you ride? fast? slow? not at all
KIC replied to deepforkriver's topic in Watering Hole
My first experience with an unexpected cross wind was riding from Yorktown VA to Washington DC on a Honda CB360T in 1977. While admiring the fall colors, I crossed a high bridge over a big chasm. I was in the "fast lane" and was hit so violently and unexpectedly I was moved from my lane to the right lane in a heartbeat. Luckily there weren't any vehicles alongside me. Wasn't even time to react. Just "boom" was over there..now over here. Would have love to see what that looked like from behind. A recent experience was a couple of years ago while returning from Silver City NM with some friends. I was riding a Vulcan 1600 and we all were leaning sideways into the severe crosswind just getting beat up and hanging on for our lives. Along came some guy on a big new Goldwing, blasted by us, sitting straight up, one hand on the handle bars while he used his left hand to smoke a big stogie. -
Just filled up the 89 and was thinking about how much other places were charging. Tucson Arizona Paid; $3.659 ( okay $3.66) 87 Octane 126 mi - 3.7 gal = 34mpg It appears to me that if I use a heavy dose of Seafoam my mileage drops. This tank will not have any additives.

Concrete poured will require 500 more posts, 2 more 1st Gens and a half gallon of ice cream.
-
Obviously you haven't read to many threads... you do realize that the faster 1st Gens will only be nice to you for 24 hours then you become fair game... Welcome to the forum...
