Front Fork Separation..
Prairiehammer replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Fork tools: And go here for pics of rebuild by bkuhr (Brian Kuhr): http://s767.photobucket.com/albums/xx318/bkuhr/fork%20rebuild/ -
It (Interstate speed instability) is most certainly NOT the nature of the beast! None of my three Ventures ever exhibited any instability at any highway speed or beyond. There is a bit of slow weaving at 110 mph with my '83 but nothing but solid straight even at that speed on my '90. It is decidedly difficult to diagnose handling issues from afar. What you call instability may be another man's "wobble", for instance, and that term usually generates a whole different set of suggestions. But your comment that it feels like riding on a bridge grate is pretty succinct and helpful. I would definitely rexamine the head bearings for "catches" and/or a too tight condition. Please remember that there is undoubtedly nearly thirty year old grease in there. Also, my experience with head bearings on Yamaha models has shown that the assemblers used a sparce amount of grease. It is not inconceivable that the bearings and races are rusty and dry. Florida salt air is known to be corrosive, correct? Take these preceding replies to your post as places to look for a defect in your bike, not as a blanket condemnation of the bike. Reconsider the suggestions from these Venture experts.

Sure, Jack I started by obtaining Earl's Skydoc-17 fuse block upgrade. He sells that as a kit for $60 shipped. (Though in this application, I did not use several of the components he provides in his kit.) Then I went to NAPA and picked up the auxiliary fuse block for $17. I spent another ten bucks or so for ATC fuses. I already had the relay, wires, heat shrink tubing, connectors and terminal strip, but perhaps another 15 bucks for those sundries. A couple hours of labor (a fair amount of head scratching and tentative component placement, soldering, fabricating wires, etc.) If one is doing Skydoc's kit alone, labor time would be about 15 minutes.

Whenever I've gone to Canada, Mexico, Germany or any foreign country, I always exchanged US$ for the local currency. It seems pretty arrogant of Americans to expect the natives to accept our currency. No business in my town would take THEIR currency, why should they take mine?

Thank you for the nice comments, guys. BTW, I have an original 1990 Yamaha Venture Royale fuse block with cover. Very Good condition. All clips strong and shiny. Mostly correct glass tube fuses included. Wires clipped short right at the clip crimps. Free to a good home.

Clock runs too fast
Prairiehammer replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Randy, I think the clock is on all the time on just the 1983 model. His 1984 would not show the clock when key is off. I'm of the opinion that one of the buttons is stuck down. Has happened before. Or possibly faulty solder joints. Of course, THAT'S never happened before on these bikes:whistling:. -
There are those 1 per centers that have done pretty well during this depression (I typed it correctly) and will always spend outrageous sums for stuff that the rest of us have only dreamed about. They just sell back and forth to each other, "...but by God, I'm not going to sell for less than I paid."

Clock runs too fast
Prairiehammer replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
But seriously, Andy, I've never heard of such a thing for a First Gen. Sounds like a chip is screwed. Short of replacing the entire "meter", I don't know how to correct this. Perhaps some electronic guru will be able to identify the clock IC and recommend a replacement to get you "regular". -
I experienced electrical gremlins last fall on my 1990 Royale. Strange behaviors. Too intermittent to diagnose specifically, but there seemed to be some relationship to the ignition switch and/or the "IGNITION" fused circuit. I know that ignition switch problems are not very frequent on First Generation Ventures, unlike the Second Gens, never the less I felt I may be having an issue with mine. So to cure possible problems with IGNITION fuse and the ignition switch, I replaced the OEM fuse block with a new fuse block that accepts ATC fuses and I added an "ACCESSORIES" auxiliary block. This auxiliary accessories fuse block is only energized when ignition switch is at ACC or ON. To prevent excessive current draw through the ignition switch, I fed the auxiliary accessories block via a 30Amp relay and 10GAuge wire. When the OEM ACC circuit is energized by the ignition switch, the relay is energized, closing the circuit from the battery to the positive lug post on the auxiliary accessories fuse block. To avoid grounding issues for added accessories, I created a common grounding terminal strip. This terminal strip is connected to the negative post of the battery with a short length of 10GA wire. The terminals on the terminal strip are electrically connected to each other with a heavy brass buss. The fuse blocks and terminal strip are mounted to the unvented maintenance free battery with double face foam "Gorilla" tape. The battery top presented a smooth surface for mounting via tape. This method probably wouldn't work for conventional batteries. I relocated the MAIN fuse to just in front of the Positive battery post. I relocated the CLASS fuse holder to under the other OEM fuse block that contains the AUDIO, BACKUP,etc. fuses for now, but I intend to utilize the remaining fuse position on the new "main fuse block" for the CLASS. Thank you, Earl for the fuse block.

Is there a safe way to get through Chicago on a bike?
Prairiehammer replied to Flyinfool's topic in Watering Hole
I feel your pain, Jeff. I live 80 miles or so west of Chicagoland near I-80 and I-39. There have been many times over the years when I wanted to go to Michigan's western shore and to parts East like, Niagara and Pennsylvania, New York, etc. and I always started puckering up around Hammond and Gary. An awful lot of traffic gets funneled through that I-80/94 corridor. I've gone so far as to take a route that goes through Kankakee into Indiana then veer north. But you know, being in Milwaukee area, if I despised Chicago traffic as much as I do, I would go clear out to I-39 and then east on I-80. Course you'll still have to contend with the Borman and that ilk. Good luck and let me know what you figure out. I'm all ears. -

It was my understanding that the reason for drilled/slotted/wave rotors was to allow for the escape of gases generated when heavy braking superheats the pad material, causing off gassing.

Depending on the dent, you may find that a toilet plunger will pull it out. No harm, no cost.
