Rear coils have a new home.
mlew replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If your coils don't survive the heat look into installing 2009-2010 V-Max coil packs. I just got a 1986 V-Max and the PO had installed them , it frees up lost of room under the seat. It looks like a kit he got somewhere because all the wiring looks factory made. The only modification was longer wires to connect the new coils to the igniton box. Colis look like this. -

I need a new set of belts for my deck if you have them. Also need a volume knob if you have one. -
1983 XVZ12TDK Carb diaphragms- anywhere?
mlew replied to preach2u's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
These are a different style but should work. I have not tried them but I want to. Since our carbs are BS34 they will work. http://jbmindustries.com/Yamaha650.html- 3 replies

Luckly no hail here in Apex, just lots and lots of rain. There was baseball size hail south of us about 60 mles, I saw many cars on the news that were totaled. It was a good weekend to sit in the garage and get the bikes fine tuned for riding.

I found a few more: Electric Hand Drill - Normally used for spinning steel Pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age, but it also works great for drilling rollbar mounting holes in the floor of a sports car just above the brake line that goes to the rear axle. Air Compressor - A machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that travels by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty suspension bolts last tightened 40 years ago by someone in Abingdon, Oxfordshire and rounds them off. Hammer - Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive car parts not far from the object we are trying to hit. Snap-On Gasket Scraper - Theoretically useful as a sandwich tool for spreading mayonnaise; used mainly for getting dog-doo off your boot. Trouble Light - The mechanic's own tanning booth. Sometimes called a drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, "the sunshine vitamin", which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefits aside, its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same rate that 105-mm howitzer shells might be used during, say, the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is somewhat misleading. Tweezers - A tool for removing wood splinters.

I cleaned and painted mine on the 83VR, they look new again. Some of them were scratched so I wet sanded the scratches out and painted. I used Testors Candy Red # RC271, 3oz spray can. The color is almost a exact match to the original lense color. You can get at most hobby stores for around 5$ a can.

mlew replied to Flyinfool's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I like your ideas, I'll be following this thread for more ideas. I have beed needing a hitch for my 83VR and have not found one yet. I have most of the steel to build one but no set design yet. -
Got one on each of my bikes, its nice to give your hand a break once in a while.

Thats right next door to me , I'm in Apex only 10 miles away. I'll pass the word around to my friends. I should be able to get 5 or more to ride. We always enjoy group rides like this.

I have a welder but I'm a little far away from you. I did the same thing on my V-Max and XJ11 so my wife could ride them. Got any friends near you with welding equipement, maybe a local machine shop can help. Get it to me and I can do it.

carb sync or diaphragm replacement
mlew replied to BlueVenture87's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If the carbs have not been cleaned in a long time there is a good chance that old fuel gum and varnish is keeping the slides from moving freely. Also possible there is a bad diaphram. I would check the diaphrams then carb sync, if that does not help then remove and rebuild.- 17 replies

Popping sounds through the exhaust indicates a lean mixture. It looks like your bike has aftermarket mufflers, they probably flow better than the stockers. Bikes are tuned from the factory with the stock exhaust and run a little lean anyway. Better flowing exhaust means more air in the air/fuel mixture, a lean condition. Did you note the color of the plugs after they were removed, white is lean, tan is good, black is rich. I would look at the plugs closley after a few miles and go fom there, I really think you will need to go up in the main jet a size or two.

Me and the wife test drove a 200 last week, The car seemed underpowered. We have a 98 sebring conv with the 2.5 V6 and it has more get up and go then the 200 did. The 200 did have some nice accessories that the wife loved. Overall it was a nice car, but I would wait a yesr or two before getting one.

running hot
mlew replied to titansedriver's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I fill the cooling system after major work I always run the engine with the radiator cap off to vent any trapped air. I'll let it run until the coolant starts to circulate. When the thermostat opens, top off the coolant and install the cap. If you just filled the radiator and put the cap on, you still had air in it. -
Ideas to fix this oil leak
mlew replied to mlew's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sucess Thanks for the help everyone. I kept the 20mm bolt and cleaned the hole real good. It was not easy, I rigged my vacuum brake bleeder with a small tube to suck out the oil then clean with brake cleaner. Kept at it until a paper towell came out clean and dry. Reassambled with a coating of Permatex and let it sit overnight. Went on several 20 mile trips to the store and home, still no signs of oil. I love it, no more wet spots under the bike. -

I see your point Dingy, I'll stick with the 20mm bolt. Thanks for the pics, now I understand what I'm dealing with. I got the hole cleaned with no oil, I'll try again with some prematex to seal it. -

I just pulled the bolt out, its 20mm long. I think a 25 mm will fit without any interference. I'm in the process of cleaning all the oil from the hole, watch a movie then try to reassamble. -
Ideas to fix this oil leak
mlew replied to mlew's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'll pull the bolt out tonight and check the length, I don't remember what it was. I did clean the hole and bolt real good the first time I put it together..no luck. I do remenber the new bolts are a bit longer than the ones I took out. I did not want old rusty bolts in a fresh engine. The firts try I used Permatex #80019 sealer on the bolt, should I try again with a longer bolt? -
Ideas to fix this oil leak
mlew replied to mlew's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I got shiny stainless bolts, they are just covered with oil now. -
I have a oil leak on the right rear cylinder head where the carb boot ataches to the head. Aperently the bolt hole for the boot goes through to a oil gallery and the oil is leaking around the threads and running down the side of my engine. I have tried thread sealer on the bolt and pipe sealer but it still leaks. Even tried gasket cement with no luck. My next thought is to epoxy a set screw in the bottom of the hole but I am a little concerned about blocking the oil gallery. Any other suggestions on what to do?

Not a new idea, I used them on a cooling tower over 15 years ago. Don't remember if they were called the same thing but they look identical. Did not have any problems with loose bearing bolts after installing them.

I got some single tip turndowns at my local Autozone for my 83VR. I did not look for any dual tip ones, it would be a good excuse to take a ride and look.
