  1. Easy decision, if the price of the bike is less than the upgrades you want to do on yours then but it. Even if its a little more its worth having extra parts around. There is probably some parts on the other one that are in better condition than yours. If you have room for it and your better half is OK with it, get it. I started with one VR in August and it has multiplied into another plus some extras.
  2. The clouds broke just long enough to get a good look. It peaked around 3am here. Me and my wife braved the cold for 30 minutes to watch. Quite impressive, glad I was not the only one up watching.
  3. I found one of these at a yard sale last summer. Paid 5$ for a new one http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/DWYER-Magnehelic-Gauge-15-PSIG-Catalog-2330-/160469021567 A Dwyer pressure gague, measures differential pressure. I have used it to sync carbs on all my bikes, it works great. Its a little sensitive and sometimes I'll use a regular gague to " get it in the ballpark" then use this one to fine tune.
  4. I just finished doing the starter ground upgrade on my 83VR. Also replaced the factory wires with #6 cable from a piece of SJO cord I got from the scrap pile. Since I did this the bike has never sounded so good when starting. It use to turn very slow when cranking, not anymore. Cost of the upgrade was less than 10$ for the #6 terminals, wire was free.
  5. Thanks Earl, I have already done the radiator drain, new O-ring and spring then a coat of paint. I should start listing all the little things like this I have done to my VR. I am currently working on replacing the old radiator fan t-stat with a adjustable electronic one. I had to take the old switch apart and make it into a thermowell for the new sensor.
  6. Might as well do the carbs while its all apart.
  7. After reading through some posts on the problems with the plastic thermostat top , here is my solution. I cut a support washer from a piece of 1/8 plate to fit around the housing. My old top was warped like most of them are and not mating flush with the base. After the washer was put on it is flush all the way around. I feel better about this now. Since I have the motor out its a good time to fix things like that.
  8. Is the upper thermostat housing available in metal? I have my 83 VR apart right now and noticed it was warpped and I would like to replace it.
  9. Oh well, has anyone tried to put on in?
  10. Does the radio display in my 1st gen Venture have a bcklight? Riding home in the dark the other night and could not see the buttons. The LED display is visable and the green power can be seen but nothing else. The CLASS controller has a backlight so I would think the radio should be also. Just wanted to know before taking it apart.
  11. Did you get any pics of the bike Earl? The pics in his add looked good . I'm curious how it looks now. I might consider it for parts if he will come down on the price.
  12. The pilot jets were stuck in the carb. They had to be drilled out to remove them. The carbs sat with fuel in them and all the insides were gummed up. I tried oil and other methods to remove them and finally the slotted end of the jet broke off. Left turning drill bits are the trick to removing them without dammaging the carb body.
  13. I need to get a set of pilot jets for my 83 VR. It seems there are several styles of jets that will fit. Which Mikuni carbs are on this bike? It is BS 30/96, KBS 30/96 , KVM 22/210 or KVM 22/486? The pilots are slightly different between these and probably won't interchange. This site seems to have good prices on jets. http://www.psep2.biz/pages/catalogs/search/U2t1U3RhcnRzOmpldHM=/3/search.aspx
  14. If none of you pick it up . I'll go get it, I live just a couple of miles away. To bad I did not see it sooner.
  15. The nipples have not rusted through yet but they are close. The inside looks normal, its rusting from the outside in. I was hoping I could replace them while the engine is out. I have access to lots of scrap stanless maybe I can come up with a idea from there.
  16. I have the engine out of my 83 VR now and the water outlets on the cylinder head are very rusted and look like they will give me problems in the near future. I want to replace them while they are easy to get to. They are not listed as a part on any Yamaha parts list. Has anyone replaced theirs and where did you get them?
  17. m8 x 1.25 , 35mm long
  18. PM sent to you Sheradan.
  19. Thanks Gary The diagrams I looked in did not list part #s for the 83 either . I would assume they are the same as other years but was not sure. There are some units for 85 and 87 VRs on EBAY so I might bid on one of those.
  20. Are the radio units ( amp and tuner) the same between all 1st gen Ventures? The radio in my 83 VR has given up and I need a replacement. I see some on EBAY for other years and they look the same buy will they plug into my amp and radio display and work?
  21. Is there a bike there or is it a pile of returns to Wally-World?
  22. I have been looking for the valve tool and dang they are expensive. Does anyone have one to sell me or rent one? I have seen some sell for 25$ and that is reasonable, but 75 is way out there. I know there has to be someone out there that has made their own tool. Please show me some more options on how you removed the shims. I seem to just miss all the good deals on the tool and shim kits. Can anyone help? Am I correct that the 1st gen Ventures use a 25mm valve shim?
  23. I just bit the bullet and ordered a set with cables. I did not really want to spend 200$, Oh well its only money.
  24. TESTING,TESTING, 1,2,3........ Yes honey I hear you.......what now. Anybody got some extra headsets laying around, I've been looking and them things are expensive.
  25. Thanks Scotty, it works. Now I can start looking for some headsets.
