I understand what you're talking about. I have never heard so many complaints about the Ventures as I have read about here on this forum. I have looked at the other V-4 forums, and they imply that its a good reliable bike, with little trouble, and they enjoy riding them. I have had no trouble with mine, and absolutly enjoy riding it. I just came back from a 1500 mile trip to Arizona on the most comfortable Bike I have ever owned. Seems ashamed that you will have to look else ware. You may actually be better off looking at the Harleys. The seat is lower, and they really are reliable and comfortable. Check out the older bikes, the prices are more reasonable, since the owners are looking to upgrade to bigger cubic inches. Leonard

Anything over 500 miles, Robin starts hitting the back of my hat!

I'm running Metzlers and am happy with them. They have always provided me with the best wear. We just came back from Arizona, thru some down pours and they handled fine. Leonard

New 2006 Black RSV...$12,999 OTD in Santa Clarita

Thats one heck of a price, but I was really thinking of that remark about the color! Everyone knows that motorcycles should always be BLACK with lots of chrome! Leonard -

Spark Plug Question
wizard replied to TrainMaster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I've noticed a improvement after changing the plugs. I try to replace them at the recommended intervals, 8000 miles, and just use the OEM which I can buy at Auto Zone. When replacing the old plugs, they look fine to me. Some here say they only replace them when they look bad... Leonard- 18 replies

When Robin and I crossed the river into Arizona, the first thing off were the helmets. We spent 3 wonderful days riding helmet free. It was really nice to be able to just toss a leg over the bike and just ride off. The helmets did not go back on till we rode back into Laughlin where the tempatures were in the 100's. I guess that most that started riding after the helmet laws were past will never understand or know just how it feels. Leonard

How do you remove spark plug wires?
wizard replied to Vance's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It started as lizard years ago, then evolved to wizard on this board. How about you, ech. -
How do you remove spark plug wires?
wizard replied to Vance's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just force em out, and then force em back on when the plugs are changed. I've never been kind to plug cables, and never been concerned with kinking the wire. I haven't broke one yet. Just don't pull on the cable to disconnect them from the plug, use the plastic cap to pull it off. -
Covered by the 5 year warranty? What a crock!

I received a invite to a meeting in Bakersfield on the 29th of this month. It sounds like someone wants to start a new Star Touring Chapter! After looking at the website, It looks like they are a very formal and tightly controled group with lots of rules and regs. How do some of you that are members of Star Touring feel about their chapters? I once was a member of HOG out of Bakersfield back in the 80's and they were a very informal group of people, just looking for other people to ride with...times have really changed since then. Now, all you see are herds of Harleys on the road together.

Robin and I are headed to the Grand Canyon October 1st. The first night we will spend in Laughlin, then on to Williams in Arizona. Can anyone here can tell me what we should see and which way to head when we arrive at the park? I've been told the weather would be great at this time of year in Arizona. Leonard

Death Valley will still be hot. Check with the Park Rangers and see how many of the facility's will be open and what roads are closed. The last time I was there was in the dead of winter, leathers all the way there, ice and snow, then Levi's and tee shirts in the valley.

When we installed the Avon's on my Venture we could not find any mark to line up with the valve stem. We even removed the tire to look inside. Then someone on this site wrote that Avon does not have to mark the tire...they are so well made, they don't have a heavy spot??? My rims must be unbalanced because it took over 5 ounces of weight to balance em...When we installed the new Metzlers with the spot lined up with the valve stem, we had to remove all the weights...

I think that Harley makes a great bike, the fit and finish, the design, even the motor, and I really believe that the product is worth the money. But, I bought the Venture for the V-4 motor, the water cooling, and the size of this monster. On the hwys it is comfortable for Robin, and I don't mind putting all kinds of miles on it because of the warranty. The Harleys I had in the past were great crusiers, and I really had very little trouble with em, but this time, the Venture fit my needs, and I'm very happy with it.

I really think it all depends on how long you have been riding. When I bought my first road bike, all I had were jeans and a tee shirt. There were no helmet laws in California. Learning to ride back then, I wore out some jeans and tees sliding and bouncing on the road and discovered you need good boots. I rode for years like that, until the representative from Hawthorne got his helmet law oked and passed. During the summer I still ride that way, but I now wear a hat. During the winter I have leathers (chaps and jacket), and a full face helmet. To me, riding in the wind, without the protection of airbags, a metal cage, air conditioning, a enclosure that keeps you isolated from the elements, is what its all about. I'm afraid that this is changing due to laws being passed by individuals who have no idea what this feedom is all about, Laws that are passed to protect me. Its really a sad thing to see this happening, soon they may take our freedom to ride like this away, to protect us. Its kinda funny, I never had so many folks trying to protect me, until the early 80's. They don't seem to understand how I could have lived till than... Leonard

I've used the Rotella syn in my other bikes with never a problem. I tried it in the Venture and found that after about 3000 miles the shifting became a issue. I have switched to the Rotella dino oil now because I figure if I'm going to change the oil every 3000 miles, why pay the extra money for the syn oil if I can't benefit from it. Leonard

Thank you for posting about the miss print on Avon's website. For the past 6000 miles on my Venoms I have been riding under-inflated!

Low Power on Acceleration/Poor gas mileage
wizard replied to wkboard's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I put around 9000 miles on my first set of spark plugs when someone here pointed out that I really should replace them at 8000 miles. It really made a difference in acceleration and gas mileage for me when I replaced them. -
In California, they used to charge a quarter to fill up your tire with air, if you could do it in 3 minutes. Now they have to provide air for free if you shop at the station. Go figure!

Roadhouse Shark Fin Slipons and Rejetting
wizard replied to llaczo's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I'm running the Roadhouse slip-ons and did not re-jet. The bikes runs fine. I've never dynoed the Yamaha, or had the exhaust checked, but seat of the pants, it runs great. -
It's funny, but I've always had a couple bikes in my garage, and I've loved every one of em! The Harley's were always for riding the runs and meets, the Triumphs were always for me by myself, and the rice burners were always for work. I was always proud of the Harley's, the feeling of riding into Hanford, Tulare, Dire Nevada, Redwood, Sturgis, or even Laughlin on a Harley will never be forgotten, never a problem with the bike. The newer Triumphs, never a problem, and a blast in the twistys, and I'm the only one to have one in this neighborhood. Then I met the Venture...Robin rides with me again! The V-4 motor, awesome! The look...I turn back for one last look before I put her up every night! When I first picked her up, I was afraid I made a mistake...I had a V-4 motor I never had experienced before, a different sound, a different "feel". I put 600 miles on her the first week so I could dump and replace the fluids to go on a trip to Susanville, Yosemite, Lassen park. In the first 2 weeks I had the Venture, I put over 3000 miles 2 up. This bike is engineered in a way Harley will never be. The first time I did any maintenance, changing the tires, lubing the drive shaft and splines, just putting the bike up in a lift, I was stunned!!! If anything, this bike is over engineered . If you are looking for something that does not follow the flock, a well kept secret, something that will call on you to ride every moment for the rest of your life, buy the Venture. Screw the whine, put louder pipes on her, turn up the stereo and set the cruise control for 80 miles per hour and ride. Can you tell, I love this ride? I'm sure I will always have a couple bikes in the garage, maybe even another Harley, but for me, there will always be a Venture. This ride is for me, nobody else, and I am now as proud of this bike as any I have ever owned.

I believe that the tire maker would know and should recommend the air pressure for the type of bike the tire will be used on. A lot of you have switched to Avon Venoms, and this is what they recommend: Avon Motorcycle Tire Website Avon Fitment Guide Avon Fitments For Yamaha XVZ 1300 TF Royal Star Venture (1999 - 2004) Front Tyres » Venom Size 150/80-16 71H 2.5 bar (36psi) Rear tyres » Venom Size 150/90B15 M/C 80H 2.9 bar (42psi) But then again, can you trust anyone who spells tires like that?
