  1. I just replaced my front tire with a Metzler tire made in Brazil, and I have the Goodrich TA Radial for the rear ordered. It should be here by Friday, and the guys at the tire store will mount it at no charge. The Metzler I had on the rear lasted me about 9500 miles, maybe more, by the time the car tire arrives. I'll give you all a report about the handling after our trip to Nevada and Arizona in June. I really believe that some here have completely discredited themselves and really should remain out of any discussion about tires until maybe doing a little research. It would really be nice to have a discussion on this subject without being called stupid...
  2. Guys have been adjusting the front end for years, cutting and rewelding, extending the tubes, changing the wheel size. It's just the nature of a biker. Hell, we even replaced entire fork assemblys on our Harleys with Suzuki forks to extend them. I don't believe you'll have any troubles, adjust your ride to suit you. You'll enjoy the ride even more.
  3. I've never run matched tires unless I bought the bike brand new. Seems like the rear tire wears faster. I never had a problem with it.
  4. Hello Jeff, What tire did you go to. My Metzler is at 8500 miles now and going fast. I'm looking at the Kumho Solus KR21 165/80R15 or the Kumho Power Star. Both are 165, and should leave me a 1/4" clearance between the shaft and the side well.
  5. Nothing. I'm serious. For what I bought it for, this bike serves me great. I have another bike, that is perfect for what I bought it for. I really don't think that any one bike will ever serve as a all purpose, all around bike.
  6. I've plugged both rear and front tires and rode them till no tread was left. I never had a problem with plugs. There are motorcycle tire specific plugs made today for them, but I've never tried them. I just use the stringy things with the glue made for car tires.
  7. It's nice to hear from someone who has 1st hand info about a car tire mounted on a bike. Its amazing what some say, who have never even tried a car tire. Bikers have been doing it for many years.
  8. I'd bet that even with a bias ply car tire on the back of his Venture, that old man could smoke you in the twistys.
  9. Last weekend, 2 up, I had to follow a Indian bike having some issues, so we kept the spped to no more than 55 MPH. This is the 1st time on the Venture I got 50 miles per gallon. I was really suprised.
  10. I really don't understand you guys. I put Avon tires on my Venture and trailer it to track day almost every weekend at Willow Springs. On the track, its big enough to knock those FJR's off the course when they get in the way! And, the only time Robin complains from the back is when I scrape the floor boards, or she has to pee!
  11. I'm kinda surprised you're having troubles. My local dealer, whom I did not buy the bike from, has been great! He has replaced plastic on the bike I never even noticed had cracks in it. This guy has gone Thur the bike to torque the screws, nuts and bolts to make sure I won't have a problem in the future. I understand that the Harley dealers have come around lately, I had a dealer tell me to take the bike back to the dealer I bought the bike from, for a cracked intake manifold, but I gotta say, Yamaha has been very good to me! You might want to check around for a dealer more interested in you, as a future customer.
  12. He rides a newer Suzuki Cruiser. I'm not sure what tire he was running, but he sure is proud of it!
  13. Were you riding when the tire went flat? I was just talking to a fellow that picked up a nail that went through the tread and the sidewall of his car tire. He was telling me the tire never broke the bead when it blew out. He believes the car tire saved his life because of this. He was saying he actually rode on the tire to a gas station. This was on a flat tire that did not break the bead.
  14. CRC is good stuff, several kinds for different applications, just make sure it is plastic safe. Chemtronics makes a good cleaner, but more expensive, geared for high end applications where certification is needed or desired.
  15. "To answer the rim size question the bead area is the area in question. On car tire beads vs the beads on a mc the shape of the bead differs just like the shape of a tube type bead vs a tubeless bead differs." Its been my experience, running tubeless tires on my Triumphs, on the track, and in the mountains, for many years, there are absolutly no ill affects. Are you also saying you can't mount a tubeless tire on a laced wheel?
  16. My point, exactly. Thank you.
  17. A great recommendation for wearing a helmet.
  18. Does being a salesman, or even a owner of a tire shop make one a professional. I really don't think so. I'm a buyer and I work with manufacturing company's such as Honeywell, P&F, Carling, etc. I work with many engineers from these company's, to design and and supply many manufacturers, both private and government. I am not a professional in any respect when it comes to the products I buy. A engineer will not sign off any item that has been designed for a specific function for any thing other than what it was designed for. If a manufacturer in the private sector wishes for a switch or contacter, we have customer service reps which can recommend an item which will meet their needs. But, even they are not the pros. All we can do is pass on the information we get from these engineers. Its not my intention to sound like a know it all or to be snippy, but I do wonder and question what makes you a professional when it comes to what will work on anything if you have not engineered or designed the item and have not even tried it for another purpose. I know that there are quite a few professionals on this blog that know what I'm referring to, and can understand why I would ask this question. So don't take this question for anything more than it is. I'm sure you know a lot about tires, its how you make a living, your knowledge base will be quite a bit more than most others when it comes to applications recommended by your vendors, but it sounds like you will not go anything farther than what your told, just as I am limited by my vendors
  19. Here is a interesting site about riding on the darkside. There is even a section for Yamaha's, but nobody has posted in that section yet. They just got their first post from a Boss Hoss rider and his experience with car tires. I was surprised by the many smaller Honda bikes using car tires. http://vtxdarksiders.forumotion.com/index.htm
  20. OK! When my rear Metzler finally wears down I'll be fitting this car tire on my Venture. Thanks for sharing this information. I hope you continue to share your experiences in these posts. It seems that there are a few posters that must have had a bad experience with a car tire mounted on their bike. I wonder if it was a bias ply or radial tire, and if it rubbed on the drive shaft housing causing the negative feelings?
  21. I love the Metzlers! Handle great, get good milage on them, and never had a problem with them. I did pick up a roofing nail once in the front tire, but I plugged it and went many happy miles on it. When this rear tire is worn, I'll probably replace it with another Metzler. I did not like the way the Avons wore or handled. I saw where Oldman mounted a car tire to his bike. I may go that route next time.
  22. I used a self made man o meter for years on my Triumphs. I was very happy with it. I still have it mounted in my garage. Never did like the results with my Harleys . I used it for awhile on the Venture, but having to plug and move the tubes was irritating. I now have the Carb-tune. So much easier to use with 4 carbs.
  23. wizard

    Car Tire ??

Outstanding!!! let us know what you think about the handling, cause we all know you're going to take it to a track day! Put them sportbikes in their place! Seriously though, after you adjust to it and it to you, let us know what pressures you keep in the tire. WAY TO GO!
  24. I really would like to see them keep the Venture a best value touring bike. Yamaha could improve the chrome, paint, sound system, etc., but if the cost goes up, well, I really hope you Rich Urban Bikers buy the heck out of them and flood the market with old gen 2 bikes to keep me going for another 20 years.
  25. I tossed mine when my levi's hungup on the heal part of the shifter. The only time I dropped the bike. The bike layed over on my leg and I couldn't pull my leg out. I even tried to pull my pants off, but no go.
