A relay is a type of switch. It can be used to turn a circuit on and off. Instead of being controlled by a mechanical toggle it is controlled by another electrical circuit. The advantage is it's control side uses a very small electrical current to turn it on and off. So connect its control side to your headlight circuit. Connect it's load side to the battery and your passing lights. When your headlight is turned on the relay will energize and connect your passing lights directly to the battery. Hope this helps. Mike

Drilling Stock Mufflers
MikeWa replied to Whitlow's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I thought I would push this post back to the top. There may be some new members or some who missed it. I did the Dremel modification yesterday and put 100 miles on the bike today. This is a fairly easy and inexpensive modification. And the bike sounds great. But not so loud as to get complaints from the neighbors. Thanks for the pictures of the muffler and the easy to follow instructions. Mike -
Everything should work with the same key. The CD changer was standard on 09s. I have an extra Clarion cd changer around here someplace. It is yours if you want it. PM me and I will check on shipping cost. It requires a c-bus cable to be plug and play. These are available on e-bay from about $8 up to as much as you want to spend. You might check to see if the factory cable is still on your bike. It is easier to take (steal) the changer than the cable. There are also some posts on installing the changer in the trunk which I like better than the saddlebag. Mike

Fuel cock and shifting ?'s
MikeWa replied to Venture Rob's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yes you can turn the fuel cock on the fly. If you run low on fuel (engine looses power and sputters) and have to go to reserve on the run it will take a second or two for the bike to recover. Or switch to reserve before that happens. No you don't have to shut the fuel valve off when the bike is parked but you should. If a float were to stick or become gummed up a carburetor could flood over. This could drain the fuel from your tank onto the ground or into your engine. I don't know why the manual recommends shifting at those ridiculous speeds. It is very easy to lug your engine in fifth gear so use it sparingly. Get used to winding this engine out. Riding will be more enjoyable. Mike -
I purchased led strips from Harbor Freight. It took four strips. Two on each side. cost about $7 each. I attached them with two sided tape and connectors from the local computer store. Mike

General Questions
MikeWa replied to Mountaineer47's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
2008 Venture with no sound from the audio system. Say warranty and head for your nearest dealer. Mike -
Why would you need to charge it? Mike

I purchased a Wells Cargo 6x12 because it was inexpensive. I added some paint and shelving. Since it is also my bike garage at home I installed a baseboard heater, thermostat and lighting. So far I am into it under 3k plus some sweat equity. Best of luck to you in finding what you want. Mike

cigarette lighters location
MikeWa replied to ride4ever1961's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Under the left rear of the front riders seat there is a white 2 wire connector. Just behind and left of the battery. It is a complete connector and has both male and female 2 wire terminals but only has pins in the side connected to the bike. Unplug the connector add pins and the wires to your accessory. (Although finding the pins can be difficult) Mike -
Don't fool around with this. A 2008 is still under waranty. Take it to your dealer and have it checked. They should be able to tell you if the front end is loose or not. If it is a tire issue they can tell you that as well. Mike

It is now the job of the insurance company to pay you as little as possible. And they hire professionals to do that. So it probably wouldn't hurt for you to have a professional on your side. Just be patient since speed kills insurance claims too. Mike

Whether she feels it now or not I would be most concerned about possible injuries to my wife. These things have a way of coming back to haunt you in the future. I would also let my attorney and insurance company know about those concerns. Mike

Worked on a friends bike now bike isrunning rich
MikeWa replied to muaymendez1's topic in Watering Hole
Did you charge him for the previous work? This is not a new bike. Several months and 5000 miles from now something else will go wrong with the bike. Will he expect you to warrant that as well? End it now. Tell him it has nothing to do with the work you did. Then you decide if you want to spend any more time working on it. And what that will entail. If not send him down the road. Being used is not being friends. Mike -
Followup: After my return from the trip I finally got around to having the bike checked on the dyno at RMC. It tested out slightly better than the baseline test in Motorcycle Magazine. So I guess the bike is ok - normal. The techs did tell me to expect about a three percent power loss for each thousand feet of elevation. That is probably pretty close to what I was feeling. As suggested by others here I punched rather than drilled my gas tank filler neck. It was so easy I kicked my butt for not doing it sooner. Then as luck would have it I ran low on fuel today. I had to switch to reserve just one block from the gas station. It took 5.007 gallons. With the unused one gallon in reserve it means my tank now has the full six gallons of usable fuel. Thanks again to those who were finally able to drive the 'punch don't drill' into my very hard head. Mike

Ok. Wired in two legs of an automotive rectifier and everything worked fine. So we replaced the new selenium rectifier, 100+ dollars, with an old used silicone rectifier we found this afternoon. Everything seems to be working ok now with 6.6 to 7.5 volts at the battery depending on load. I have no idea why the selenium unit tested good with a diode tester but did not function correctly on the bike. Mike
