Well I finally made the plunge. I have not been happy with 5th gear since I have owned this bike. So I finally broke down and swapped out the differential for one with the Vmax gears. That changes the gear ratio from about 3.3/1 to about 3.6/1. Not a drastic change but oh what a difference in handling. This is the gear that should have been in the Venture from the factory. No more bucking and lugging. Fifth is now usable from under 40 to over 100 mph. The bike is much more responsive at all speeds and in all gears. Slow speed cruising in first is much improved as well. So thanks Freebird. Your article in the Tech section convinced me to go ahead and give it a try. John Furber at RMSportmax was easy to work with and got the gears to me quickly. Mike

Very nice looking bike. Truly not a run of the mill Venture. How did you handle the tail end wiring? Mike

So thats what a first gen looks like. Mike :rotf::rotf:

Holy crap. Ok so what I hold in my hand would not be the brake lever. Mike

Does anyone know if swapping out the rear end for a vmax unit changes the speedometer reading? Thanks Mike
-
Yep my speedo is off 7 to 8% but the odometer is pretty accurate. So it must be a built in error. I just don't worry about it. All of my vehicles have a slight error. So I just run a couple of miles over. Mike

Increase CB amp rating in fairing aux power recepticle?
MikeWa replied to fredfloon's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Can you say relay? Power the control from the 5 amp ckt. Run a new load ckt from the battery with a fuse of your choosing. Mike -
Well six inches is six inches. Mike

JB Weld is a little scary. Good stuff but it could be a problem at some later date. I would use some hi temp silicone with a little pressure behind it to force it into the opening. Or even some liquid nails. But good luck whatever you do. Mike -
Great video. Good reminder too because sometimes we Yanks forget that we weren't the only ones and most of the time we weren't alone. Mike

I rode in the Auburn WA. Veterans day parade last weekend. It is pretty close to your home. Great weather, warm and sunny. The large crowd provided a lot of cheers for the vets and military units. The Air Force did a C-17 fly over. This is a vary large parade that takes about two and a half hours to pass by the review stand. It is said to be one of the largest Veterans parades in the country. And I believe it. Lots of flags. Mike

Yes they have. You just put a baseball card in the spokes. Mike

No Low Fuel Indications

You have a Venture that will never run out of gas. There were very few of these made. Sorry couldn't help myself. Yes it sounds like the sending unit is gummed up or bad. Mike -
Sounds like a bad bulb. Mike

I will be going for a ride with some fellow veterans tomorrow morning. http://techboss.in/index.php/2011-auburn-veterans-day-parade-and-observance/ I believe (have heard) this is the largest remaining veterans parade in the country. Mike

Testing wires. If you have never done this before switch your meter to ohms. If you can set the scale set it to the one ohm or x1 scale. Touch the two leads together and observe the reading. This is what you hope to get with a good wire. To practice take a short length of wire and touch one meter lead to each end of the wire. Compare your reading to the previous one. They should be very close. Learn this reading it shows a good wire. To test the bike unplug the 18 pin white connector to the audio system. Picture this as 18 individual wires. One end of each wire is at the plug. The other end is connected to some object on the bike. Each wire is a different color. Pick a wire, check the color and location in the plug. Use the wiring diagram to see what object the other end is connected to. You do not have to disconnect the other end. Put one of your meter leads on the wire at the plug and the other meter lead on the wire at the object. You should get a reading very close to your practice reading. Repeat this for each wire except for the two battery power which are Red-Green and Black-White. To test them remove the audio and back up fuses. You can now test from the plug to the fuse pin just as you did the other wires. R/G goes to the backup fuse and B/W goes to the audio fuse. If this doesn't get it you will need to look for a short or pinched harness which I can explain to you later. The pin locations are in the service manual. In the back of the manual are wiring diagrams. Under item 80 MCU is a small picture of the connector showing the wire locations in the connector. The pictures of the wires themselves are random around the dotted line around the MCU. From there it is easy to see what they go to. ...Also fyi this diagram does not show any of the round audio connectors. So it does not show the wiring for the CB, CD, Riders remote, Riders headset, Passengers headset, or Cassette player. Clarion considers this wiring internal to the MCU / audio system. Go figure. Hope this helps Mike

Two radios with the exact same problem. Possible but unlikely. Under the fairing near the round audio plugs is a white rectangular 18 wire connector plug. This contains the wires for all the speakers and the passengers remote. (see your wiring diagram) Bite the bullet and test all 18 wires. Don't overlook the plug itself. If they test ok go to the riders remote control connector. It is a round plug 13 pin with a blue marker. With the key on accessory and the radio set to speakers and the volume up very thoroughly wiggle and push the wires in this connector. They have been plagued with problems. If the speakers come on or squawk you have found it. If not you will need to substitute a known good riders control and see what happens. Mike

The Venture has the most spacious and I think comfortable passenger seat. The passenger on an HD Ultra has to get their legs past the saddle bag guards. Which may course some discomfort on a long trip. The Gold Wing is more cramped and riding positions are limited but it offers more power. Put a set of arm rests on the Venture and the passenger could just take a nap right there. On my Venture I put an adapter on the handle bars to move them up and back a little. And I added a riders backrest and highway pegs. This provided me with a variety of comfortable positions for my long rides and I am very pleased with it. Both the HD Ultra and Gold Wing offer extras such as anti-loc brakes and fuel injection that are not available on the Venture. But these things come at extra cost. Mike
