  1. It's not a Venture but I am hoping someone has experience with these bikes. The problem; The battery goes dead and the engine dies. It happens faster if the headlight is on. The system. 1971 Honda SL125. A 6 volt balanced charging system (rectifier but no regulator). It has a four wire rectifier. Two from the stator, one battery neg and one battery pos. it has a two step 3 wire stator. White stator wire goes to headlight switch and activates second step of stator and is switched to the yellow wire when the headlight is on. The yellow wire, first step, goes to the rectifier. The pink wire goes to the rectifier and is common to the white and yellow. What we have done: We resistance checked the stator. Leg 1-0.3 ohm Leg 2-1.7 ohm. No continuity to ground. AC output out of stator leg 1 7.5 to 9.5 volts AC at rectifier. Leg 2 7.5 to 9.5 volts AC at rectifier. Diode check rectifier front .350 volts to energize, back open on all 4 diodes. Disassemble selenium rectifier and clean all connections just in case. Perform voltage drop on positive and ground wires to the battery. Resolution. The problem is not resolved. We have 6.3 volts 0.1 to 0.9 amp at the battery running and 5.91 volts and falling with -2.1 amp with the headlight on. Questions: Is stator resistance ok? Honda does not publish a spec. Is stator AC output voltage 8-9 volts ok for a 6 volt balanced system? Can the rectifier diodes test good and it still be bad? Any ideas? Plan; Our current plan is to wire in a rectifier from an automobile alternator and see what happens. Anything else we can try? Thanks Mike
  2. RV suppliers sell roof mounted AC units. I don't know what it would take to reinforce the roof to handle it though. If you are planning on spending some time or sleeping inside make sure you fix the door so someone can't come by and accidently lock you in. Mike

  4. They (gov) like to cut the things that people will notice and be inconvenienced by. It puts pressure on us to give them more money. As if there would ever be enough. If they (gov) would stop giving our money away in the form of foreign aid I might be more sympathetic. For now I would just like to fire most of congress and the executive branch along with them. Mike
  5. My parking space was limited and my trailer is also my bike garage. So I purchased a 6x12 V-Nose high top made by Carry-On. I wanted the high top and v-nose and this was the cheapest I could find. I stained the interior wood, painted the floor, added nonskid, insulated the top, added a shelf and coat hanger. I also added the Harbor Freight motorcycle stand. I am quite happy with it. I plan on adding 110 volt outlets and a heater. So far I am into this less than 3k plus a little work.
  6. The dip got me curious. Here is a scan from a magazine comparison of a Royal Star and an old Harley RG. Hmmm same torque dip. I still think it could be carbs from starting out in high gear. Anyone else have thoughts on this? Mike
  7. It's a PARK for petes sake. Not a wilderness. That is so sad to go out for a hike in the park and end up killed by the wildlife. Mike
  8. Just, Just enjoy your time together. Mike
  9. Nope. No information. But it is just a couple of ft lbs so overall I am pretty happy with the broad torque band. Might be where the carbs transition or something. My concern was that I was dropping a cylinder or something under a high speed load. But it seems ok. Mike
  10. In an earlier thread http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60093 I expressed concern over power loss and low fuel economy at altitude. (See the trip report on page 2) So today I had my RSV run on a dyno to see if some electrical or mechanical problem might be the culprit. The first chart is 'one run' in fourth gear and 'one run' in fifth. The Second chart is 'two runs' in fourth and 'two runs' in fifth. We ran in fifth because that is where I experienced the most problems on my trip. The bike was flawless on the dyno. The rev limiter on my bike clearly cuts off at different RPM depending on which gear it is in. Fifth at about 5600 and fourth at about 6600 rpm. My guess is this is probably because of the speed rating on the stock tires. Both techs at the dealer reported I could expect about a three percent loss of power for each thousand feet in altitude. Since a lot of my riding on the trip was at 5,6, or 7,000 feet that seems consistent with my experience. Horsepower is on the ground and after gear reductions and drive train loss. So it is less than the engine horsepower in the specs.
  11. Thanks Buddy I was thinking of using nitrogen or filling the tank with water or some such thing. But if a punch works that sounds much better. Ken Glad things worked out for you. Mike
  12. V7Goose You are correct. I have not vented my gas tank yet. So it only holds 5.5 gallons from walking to as full as I can get it at a pump. I know this because I have made the walk. Also I have filled the tank just as I switched to reserve 4.5 gallons on many occasions. Once I drill vent holes in the filler neck I hope to get the full six gallons. Until then it is 4.5 plus one in reserve. Mike Edit; PS I switch to reserve when the engine begins to choke and loose power.
  13. My RSV only holds 5.5 gallons from walking to full. One of which is the reserve gallon. If yours is the same it sounds like your reserve valve is plugged as etcswjoe said. You are getting 4.5 gallons and no reserve. I have found the low fuel warning light and low fuel mileage counter to be less than consistant. The reserve valve though always provides me with one gallon.
  14. One way you can test for a bad coil is with a timing light. Connect it to the plug wires one at a time. If it doesn't work on one cylinder or it is probably bad. Mike
  15. Generally a short will blow a fuse. A poor connection will cause the problem you describe. if they were installed according to the instruction ( a big maybe) there should be a push button switch next to the accessory plug in the fairing. Mike
  16. Sometimes removing and reinstalling the small battery on the mainboard will work if the password was set in the bios. Mike
  17. Oh man. That is so hard to hear. Our condolences to his family and friends. Mike
  18. Very nice bike. Great color. Take a minute and make sure the trunk mod has been done. Mike
  19. I always back up my GPS with a map. I like to know the route I am taking or planning ahead of time. It's just easier for me with a map. Because I don't trust a GPS to take the best route. Mike
  20. Get well. Glad you are still with us. Mike
  21. Any crash you can walk away from - is still a crash. Glad he will be ok. Prayers and best wishes sent. Mike
  22. They sure have our best wishes and prayers and a speedy recovery. Mike
  23. Sorry to hear this. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. Mike
  24. Best of luck Tom Mike
  25. With a bike like that I can only imagine the trouble I could get into. Mike
