  1. The only other thing that remains a real question - and to test it, we just need to find two people with a CB that are nearby. But the IC volume setting may or may not control the voice volume transmitted across the CB. This is something that I would like to know for sure as when I ride by myself with plans to have the CB on (listen to the truck traffic mostly) I like to turn the IC volume to 0 to avoid the necessary background noise from the intercom system - doing this, I have asked a few things on the radio and gotten no response, so I don't know if it is that people couldn't hear me because the transmit volume was turned down (c.f. IC volume) or if it was simply that no one chose to respond. With the IC volume up to where I normally keep it for intercom communications, I have gotten responses over the radio so I know that my deal works. ( I just haven't gotten a conclusive test after I started turning the IC to 0).
  2. Huh. Well gee whiz, that isn't too bad. The last time I had looked seriously was a few months ago and I wasn't finding anything less than $150. I guess I just didn't look in the right places. I'll stay tuned for the review!
  3. This might not be exactly it but freezy has linked to these a few times: http://cyclemaxohio.com/inc/sdetail/4231 If I could figure out a good place for it on my RSV I'd be all over it. can't beat it for 25 bucks either. I have been considering doing it in the plastic piece on top of the tank, but I haven't been able to find a second one (for a price I was willing to pay) so that I could cut a hole in the one I have - just in case it doesn't work or I screw it up. And I am not sure I want to cut into the inner fairing just yet... those are quite pricey.
  4. There is that "Donate" button up in the corner that gets a work out from time to time... I would like to see an eating contest though: Pondmonsters vs. Boomer Food: Cheesecake.
  5. Nothin' wrong with that! One of the perks of driving a 2-wheeler. I bet his does better on fuel than just about any one else's on here too!
  6. :happy65::happy65: Very nice. Looks like you've got all sorts of goodies on there already too! (bag rails, trunk rack, passing lamps, fender trim, etc.) I'm sure you'll be real happy with it too!! My Grandpa has been telling me for years (he turned 83 a few days ago), that he gets older but has yet to grow up. :thumbsup2:
  7. You have 2 options for the audio delivery: 1) Everything (Radio/CB) goes through the headsets 2) Everything (Radio/CB) goes through the bike's speakers You have only 1 choice for the intercom system - it is always routed to the headsets.
  8. I hear you! I was quite surprised to see that it was less than $5. I was expecting a minimum of ~$20 or so. I looked it up out of curiosity - for you and because I was ready for a chuckle (and to give me the 'ol, "Self, you better not loose those suckers" talk). HOPEFULLY there won't be any suprises in it for you...
  9. Congrats on passing! I've been through segment of police training for driving and advanced evasive maneuvering, etc etc. and have found that to be extraordinarily valuable in day to day driving (cage and bike). I haven't seen anything on driving an ambulance though - I would be interested to see what else is involved with that. All I know is what I have heard to talking to some EMTs or FF that I've worked with or around.
  10. As a Physicist, I found it very interesting. As mentioned earlier, not ground shattering research or anything, but a very interesting application of the concept. There are some practical issues that I am curious how they are going to deal with, but it sounds like they are on to something. I have looked up some more info on the research group and will be looking forward to their publications describing their research. Thanks for sharing it.
  11. Pinwall would be a place to check (but their shipping is usually pretty crazy for this couple dollar part). I wonder if you could find some conduit that would be of an acceptable diameter Or chrome pipe as Kreg suggested. $4.38 from partshark (Plus shipping of course) $4.74 From stadium Yamaha in Irving, TX
  12. I've read quite a bit of good stuff about these. The only major thing that was really holding me back was the price tag. The extra wiring I figured might be some work, but I figured I could handle it. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it after a few weeks of good use
  13. Hmm. I guess I'm a lucky one then. I have checked my speed and mileage against two different GPS units. I have found that my speedometer consistently reads within 1 or 2 units of accuracy. That is, I am always within 5 MPH of the indicated speed. NOTE that the resolution of the speedometer is only 2.5 MPH increments.
  14. Sorry. Somedays I read things but it just doesn't process. I read through his post then got to yours and my mind apparently was wandering somewhere else. )
  15. I hadn't thought of that. How about the exhaust fumes too?
  16. Yikes. Well I guess I'm okay with not spending the 20 bucks on one of those little lights (as I did question their reliability). One thing that I have seen, and really like (and I don't know if you have seen or not) but a few of our members here have put the standard analog gauge in the dash by one of the speakers. Giving it a 'built in' type look. Ponch has a gauge or two setup like this (in addition to what he has replaced the cassette deck with) and I thought it was pretty slick. I think all that is needed for the install is a hole saw (of the appropriate size) and probably some silicon sealant or a descent gasket. Just a thought.
  17. I have no input to answer your question, but if you want some help troubleshooting your 'messed up headset' situation - plenty of us on here can probably help you out with it. I will stay tuned though, as I am curious what else is available/will work and what folks have done as a replacement.
  18. The only problem I have found with trying to get replacement hardware from home-depot, lowes, ACE, Menards and a local hardware store is that for a few of these bolts, they need to be extra long or whatever and they are just not available through these stores. (can always cut to length, IF they are long enough to begin with). BUT I'll pay the premium on a couple of these suckers if I have to and get the rest elsewhere.
  19. All that one is missing is a hole/drain in the bottom for easy clean up.
  20. It is hard to tell from the pictures they post if the painted surface(s) are just dirty and need a good wash and wax, or if the paint is actually damaged (trunk lid in particular). It also needs a CB antenna. NADA puts Low retail at $5,275 and Avg retail at $6,880. They do say that it runs but does not idle. So considering that baring no other major issues they are neglecting to mention, plus having to do the standard fluids, recovering the seats, the antenna and possibly having to paint the trunk lid, somewhere around 4,000 or 4250 in my opinion is probably fair. I do see that someone made an offer that was declined - I wonder what the offer was? If I was in the area, I would probably go take a look at it in person to see what it really looks like - but, I'm a wee bit away from Penn.
  21. Well, that is too bad. I totally understand though.
  22. Most GPS units are configured to provide an elevation readout somewhere. I would be surprised if the c580 unit does not have it (it very well could be buried somewhere) but I have never messed with that particular model so maybe it is one of the few that don't. Hopefully someone else can chime in to provide more insightful information regarding this particular unit.
  23. How did you measure this? If you intended on measuring the voltage across the battery terminals your meter was set incorrectly. If you got a read out of 0.3mA you had it set to read current. In this case, this is the improper way to measure current in and out of the battery. If your intent was, in fact, to measure the current in/out of the battery you need to disconnect a lead of the battery and hook your meter up in series with the lead cable and the battery. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A METER THAT CAN HANDLE 30+ AMPS -- which if you have a standard $20-$50 multimeter from the standard hardware store I highly doubt it is rated for such currents (it is probably fused at 10A). If your intent was to measure the voltage between the battery terminals (as several have suggested to do) you need to set your meter to the voltage setting and then touch the red lead of the meter to the positive side of the battery and the black lead of the meter to the negative side of the battery.
  24. Despite the rally being canceled, Rick if you two decide you still want to make the tirp - or some variation on, I'd be interested in putting some miles on with you while you are in the Southern states
  25. I'm sorry, I should have qualified my initial statement on that. I cannot speak for the bikes in general, as I have only observed that on mine (last summer when I was dealing with some electrical issues). So with that in mind, the couple times that it happened to me it flashed off and reset itself when I pushed the starter button a few times (with the battery's charge lingering). Then once I got it started it did not come back on right away. To be honest with you though, I don't remember how long it took for the display to come back because when it happened and I got my bike to start, I was more focused on getting home than I was what was going on with the speedometer (since I was about 150 miles away and in the middle of nowhere). So, I suppose what I am trying to say here is that I don't really know. Come to think of it, just the other day I was in a bit of a hurry and turned my key on and hit the starter button before the display needle went all the way to 0 mph and my display didn't come on. I started driving, looked down and saw it wasn't on so I popped it in neutral, turned the bike off and back on, let the gauge do its self test, then popped the clutch and continued driving. Sorry I cannot be more helpful with this particular aspect of your issue.
