  1. Hi Rocket. Just heard your message. I don't have Skype so it goes to the answering machine in the living room and I am in the den in back so don't hear it. If you are in Victoria Saturday will you be doing the ride Sunday?
  2. I will be leaving Saltspring on the 0700 ferry to Crofton then over the Hat. I am meeting a couple friends there. One just bought a new Yamaha. Weather report is light rain so I expect it will be heavier on the Hat but not as bad as last year. I think the poker run is up to Duncan where we meet up with the Nanaimo riders. Just remembered, the rain was during Ride to Live which is June 5 this year. I think their poker run is out the Saanich peninsula to Sidney. I plan on doing both.
  3. Building a lot of roundabouts here too. They work OK once everyone understands how to use them. I think the ones being built here are built by midgets too. A couple years ago our aunt, who was 91 then, went airborne when she launched off the center of one she did not realize was there. She was fine, just kept going and wondered what the bump was. Her passenger on the other hand was a bit weak kneed. On the lighter side, when I was in England one year I was following my cousin to her place. I did not know where it was so had to make sure I did not loose her. In England if you are not doubling the speed limit you are going to be passed. She had a turbo wagon and I had a diesel van. I had a hard time keeping up on the freeway then we hit a three lane roundabout. We went around it twice, she missed the turn off the first time. I had the van in a four wheel drift, tires and engine screaming trying to keep up. The second time around we hit the right exit. I figure everyone there thought a movie was being filmed.
  4. Had a 53 five window with Olds W30 running gear and clip. Fast and fun.
  5. Over in Victoria today helping our niece move. Beautiful day. Lots of hot rods and bikes on the road. Saw a black/red 2nd gen a couple times. I was the guy on Superior street with a truck full of furniture watching you go by. Bad news...she is moving in with us for a few months Good news.....she is a nice kid and loves to bake. Bad news......looks like I might be gaining even more weight.
  6. The Ode is part of the ritual for every Royal Canadian Legion meeting. You can sometime see how the Vets are affected by it.
  7. There are some nice beaches and a couple of lookouts on the Tofino road. Be aware that about 1/2 way along from the intersection to Tofino there is a hidden dip in the road. You can't see it until you are right there. Lots of gouges in the pavement from cars that went airborne. The road from Pt Alberni west is rough pavement and people have been killed on it. The scenery is beautiful though and it is worth the ride. Cathedral Grove is the forest you want to see. It is on the road to Pt Alberni.
  8. Cirque du Soleil. Fantastic. Our friends saw O and raved about it. We went to Ka and it was outstanding. Would happily go again. The stage in Ka is the only one of its kind in the world. You would not believe what they can make it do.
  9. If you do decide on the Vancouver island ride I would suggest the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria ( Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay) then up the Island to Naniamo and back to the mainland. Stop at the top of the Malahat for a good view out over the San Juan islands and the Gulf Islands ( Including Saltspring). Would be happy to meet you at Swartz Bay and ride up to Nanaimo. Lots of interesting side roads.
  10. Lots of places to rent motorcycles. Silver T could probably give advice on that and on where to ride. For a one day ride you might want to ride up to Whistler mountain then take the ski lift up and the peak to peak ride.
  11. I believe up to a 4 1/2 inch blade is legal, but I wouldn't be wearing it. A lot depends on your attitude and if the officer is having a bad hair day.We are not allowed into the U.S. if we have a DUI on our record. There used to be a reward ($ 10% of the value) if some one called the border and reported you. I know one guy who bought new tires in the U.S. and did not declare them. The garage had phoned the border and reported him. The officers jacked up his car and confiscated the tires with him still sitting in the car.

    Scam????

I got another e-mail from the guy claiming he was pay pal certified. I fwd his e-mails to spoof@paypal.com. They confirmed it was a scam and turned it over to their criminal acts crew. I doubt I will be hearing from him again.

    Scam????

Yep its a scam. Just got an e-mail that he can't do cash because he is in the U.K. And he wants to buy a car on Saltspring island? I don't think so.

    Scam????

I suspect this is a a scam. A guy contacted me via e-mail to buy my 51 merc. He insists on paying via pay pal and wants me to open an account there. He will not tell me where he is and claims he does not have a chequeing account and cannot go to the bank due to the nature of his work (used car dealer) He wants to send the money then have the car picked up. I have offered to deliver it but he refuses. It does not make sense for him to pick it up due to ferry fares and tides. Your opinions?
  15. "Keep your friends close but your nuts closer"
  16. Those are not the brass monkeys from ships. There is no way a pyramid of balls would last on a sailing ship. Those are pictures of cannon balls at some shore based facility. The brass hoops held the balls secure and they did not roll around. In extreme weather they could be moved below decks. The balls would sink almost half way through the hoops keeping them secure. " The Devil to Pay" On wooden sailing ships the seams between the planks was calked or "payed" with tar and oakum or "small stuff". Sometimes a ship could spring a bad leak in mid ocean which the pumps could not keep up with. In such a case all the cargo and anything else movable would be shifted to one side and the ship turned broadside to the wind to heel it over and lift the seam out of the water. A sailor, usually an unpopular one, would be lowered over the side. The lowest seam, nearest the keel was the hardest to get at and was called "the devil" . In that case the sailor was "between the devil and the deep blue sea" and " had the devil to pay".
  17. "It is no use flogging a dead horse" In the days of iron men and wooden ships the sailors would collect their pay form a trip and spend it on bad booze and naughty women. They would soon be broke and go looking for another ship to sign on with. They would collect a months pay in advance. In those days a debt was called a "dead horse" and anyone who was in debt was said to be carrying or dragging a dead horse. Flogging was the standard punishment for just about anything on board ship. Flogging a sailor who was carrying a dead horse just wasn't worth while as he would not do much work until he had worked off the debt and started getting paid. "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" Between decks on the old sailing ship was generally less than 5 ft in height. I have been on the Cutty Sark and the Golden Hind replica. I had to duck walk along the deck. Young boys, 10-12 years old were used to run bags of gunpowder from the magazine up to the cannons because they were short enough to do it quickly. They were known as "Powder Monkeys". The cannonballs were held in brass hoops mounted alongside the cannons. They became known as "Brass Monkeys". Brass does not expand or contract, iron does. When it got cold enough the iron balls would contract and fall through the brass hoops. Flogging was the standard punishment on board ship. The whip was "the Cat O'Nine Tails" It had nine strands which could be knotted or even have bits of metal in them. It was kept in a black bag. If you "let the cat out of the bag" you were in trouble. Since there was "not enough room to swing a cat" below decks punishment was carried out on deck where the sailor would be tied to the mast or a hatch cover or even "over a barrel"
  18. In a distant land, far, far away, in a different time and space there are seat nuts, valve stem covers, battery connectors etc falling from the sky. This confuses the natives as they have no idea what they are. They call them " Airfutzfallensplat" which translates as " Cr*p that falls from the sky".
  19. I don't mind the beavers in the lake, it's the darn critters that dam the creeks and flood the golf course and road.
  20. My son is going. I told him I want lots of pics. There was an amazing bike built in Victoria called "Ezekeal". I hope it is there.

    spring

What bugs me is that we only have a population of 12000 on the island and over half of them are elderly. They would have a heart attack it they ever got anywhere near the speed limit. We have 6 full time cops plus auxiliary's. All these other guys were brought in from off island. They do this 3-4 times a year. I doubt the tickets they wrote covered the costs.

    spring

It is a sure sign of spring, a nice sunny day and the government tax collectors are swarming. Went into town and back today, about 5 miles, went through 5 radar traps and saw two other tax collector cars. Could be worse I suppose, could be politicians.

    Vertigo

Wife and I have both had it. Fortunately just one bout each. I was sitting watching tv when I suddenly fell over sideways. I could not get up and could feel what was coming. I crawled across the floor and just made it outside in time. Nope, no alcohol involved. A couple months later the wife had it. The doc said there would be return bouts but each one would be less violent. He was right. Been a few years now but no more symptoms.
  24. Went through the shipboard firefighting car firefighting and helicopter firefighting and rescue at our training institute. Also went through the Canadian Navy firefighting course. These were all required for my job on the ferries. Most of the volunteer firefighters here are ferry workers as they have the training. Sure do learn a lot. I was also first aid attendant for the ship. There were no medical facilities on the outer islands so anyone who got hurt simply went down to the dock and waited for the ferry to arrive. Had an ongoing battle with the company who insisted I was just there for the employees while I insisted my certificate stated I had to help anyone who needed it. We would usually do a couple of marine rescues each year as well.
  25. Sounds like the alarm might of run the battery down to the point where the lights come on but there is not enough juice to crank it. When you turn on the ignition does the headlight come on? Is it weak? I too have had trouble with new batteries being no good. Had one where the top had been put on backwards so reversed the polarity, + was negative and - was positive.
