I have to agree with the others on this one, Jim. The only thing that I would add is to use the Valvoline Synthetic brake fluid (it's compatible w/Dot 3). I've swapped all my hydraulics to it and really like it. If you ask real nice, Squidley has a picture of the bottle it comes in that he might post. (I'm too lazy to run downstairs with my camera, plus Sharon Stone is about to kill Gene Hackman!)

Now for something entirely different

Very Nice! I think you need to ride that beast to Vogel in August! -
Need help starting problem

OK, I hate to state the obvious, but check the kill switch and make sure that you're in neutral. (It's happened to us all at one time or another!) -
After cleaning up the connectors, use some di-electric grease on them. That will prevent any future corrosion. It's not a bad idea to grease all the connectors that you can find on the bike. As far as xm, I have the "xm commander" and I like it alot. Even though it has a separate box (unlike the Rodies) I prefer it for the size of the control head. I have the unit mounted in the right side with the water overflow bottle. Kind of tight with the cb, but you don't have that problem. This picture is from right after my crash, but you can see the control head on the right side of the dash, under the tach. Btw: the dash area looks a lot better these days!

It should plug right in. You could call them:Toll Free 1.800.260.4050 and double check. I actually got mine from a friend that used his on a 90 Electraglide. Some systems are different, like the Autocom and maybe a few others, but most are standard.

Stator power output

I was talking to Squidley yesterday (just b-4 he and Lonna fell off the face of the earth) and he said there is an upgrade for the 1st gen stator. I don't remember what company he said makes it, but I plan to find out when he finds his way back to this planet in a couple of weeks. -
eBay has been a little crazy lately! But that is mainly because I need some stuff!! I just replaced the left side panel (the piece w/speaker grill) because the corner was ground off in the crash and it wasn't worth trying to fix. The new one from the dealer was only about $35-40. Also you can get it at Flat Out Motorcycles under "Fairing 2". I'm not sure which piece you're talking about, the one with the speaker ($32) or the inner box piece ($40). The advantage of going to the dealer (if he's good) is not paying shipping and supporting a local merchant. Mine pretty much price matches. That being said, I support the dealer in Canton (20 miles away) as opposed to the one 5 miles away because at Canton they are much better (read: friendly and caring about my business) versus not really seeming to care if they help in Marietta!

I'm curious to see that, Tommy! If you go down below the text box when you're posting you will see a a button that says "manage attachments", click on that and it will bring up six "browse" buttons. Just click on one of those and look in your pictures until you find the one that you want and double click it, repeat for more pics. Then click "upload files". If it doesn't upload, it may be to big and you'll need to re-size it smaller. If you don't have that program Don posted around here someplace.

How do you paste a quote?
86er replied to Silveryder's topic in Computer help and tips for using this site.
I couldn't figure out how to do the multiple quote thing until Freebird told me to click all the (")s at the lower right of the quotes I want to quote and then the post reply button.- 13 replies

Man, Joe! That's even farther than I pushed my tire! I'm glad that you kept it together after you let the air out!

Although Tom has passed beyond the veil that separates us from ancestors, known and unknown, he lives within our hearts, minds and souls. All the lives he touched have known a greater joy than otherwise would have been. Death brings sorrow and pain to the living, but we must remember the ship sailing away over the horizon and those left on the pier saying “Alas, he is gone”; while on the distant shore others are saying “Look, on the horizon, here he comes!” This then is the joy of reunion. Man with God. Tom is beyond our physical touch yet lives in the very core of our souls. You are in my thoughts and prayers Sherry.

Jeff, it's great that you and Margaret had so much time with her. You're both in our thoughts and prayers.

You don't need to change from a sport/touring to get a comfy passenger and the Mighty V4. All you have to do is find a nice 1st Gen!!! That is what Yamaha designed it to be and it's the best of all worlds! It's like Skid says "800 pound crotch rocket!"

Hey Russ, do you have me down there twice, or is there a Todd McGill that's different from Todd Magill?

I have seen the J&M setup on a Dyna and the lady riding it loved it. I didn't have my helmet set up for com. at that time so I didn't get a chance to talk to her on it, just about it. With the PTT on the unit just above the left grip, it looked like it would be real easy to use. When I had my 650 Maxim ( in 2000) I was trying to do the same thing and ended up putting about $1500 in a radio, XM, Hidden Cb and an Autocom system to tie it all together! And I had to use a hand held mike to talk. It was a pain to use but at that time there wasn't anything like the J&M. Go with the J&M. the preceding has not been a paid advertisement LOL

I have found, both with my Venture and my v-twin Intruder, that my mileage in the twisties is better if I keep the rpms higher. Even though the low end torque on the Intruder would probably pull up a tree stump!

I'd be in for 5 as well. Where in Atl. do you get them?

I got my lawnmower out Friday to give the grass a quick cut (didn't know who might be stopping by this weekend!) and remembered that I had run the gas out of it last fall, so I grabbed a gas can and filled it up. Not a good thing, the can was full of diesel! I smelled it and quickly dumped it out, put a small can in my saddlebag and ran up to the petrol station. I filled the mower (a craftsman that's always started well) with fresh gas, pumped the bulb and pulled......and pulled..... and pulled! Nothing, Nada, Zilch, Zip-o!!! One of my roommates pulled while I shot a little ether in it and it would fire for a bit but die. Pumping the primer bulb seemed to have no effect. I grabbed the SeaFoam and poured an ample amount in the tank, tipped the mower back and poured some through the throat of the carb. Pulled it twice and it sputtered. Pulled it again and it started and died. Had my roommate pull it and I pumped the bulb each time it started to die. About 20 or 30 seconds of that was all it took. It smoked for a few seconds but it's running great again and the grass is cut! I love SeaFoam!

It's not a problem for the pipes. I lift mine (and others) by the pipes all the time. In fact, at the Goldwing factory they move the bikes around with a forklift and pick them up using the pipes. I figured on the 2nd gens that they need spacers to just even things up. Like on my Intruder, if I don't get it just right, it leans to the side.

All you need to do is get a 1st gen! then you just slide the jack under and go! No need for all this fancy-scmancy adapter stuff!

Hey Tom, Wanna Bet!!! Ok, I here are the pics. To be honest, I don't remember if I drilled and tapped the holes or if they were already there with the screws. They are just into that metal strap. I got power and ground from the light wires under the trunk mat. I haven't run anything more than my cell phone charger so far. I carry a tire inflator (one of the cheap Wally World types with the plastic removed to save space) but haven't used it yet. I don't like the space that I loose to that XM box, but I like the size of the control head on the dash so I tolerate it.
-
If I didn't have so much crap in my trunk I could get a picture for you! Oh well, I guess that gives me a reason to clean it out. You know, nature and my trunk abhor a vacuum! I'll see what I can do.

Naw, that might be the bridge of the USS (insert any WWII destroyer name here), but Redneck has bridge of the Starship Enterprise! (Skid, you'll notice that I did say DESTROYER!) Tom, I have a cigar lighter mounted about where Skid's is, but I also mounted a power port in the trunk. This keeps it out of the weather and I don't need access while riding anyway. I use that for charging the cell phone or a tire air compressor, and, though I haven't tried it yet, powering my laptop while on the road (not literally!), like camping and such. If I get a chance, I'll try and get some pics to post.

I'm thinking that there is a reason that Nascar (hell, all racecar) drivers swerve back and forth behind the pace car, and motorcycle racers put electric cozies (warmers) on their tires, before a race! It doesn't take long for tires to warm under normal conditions, but starting out with cool temps, or with mega-curves coming, up I always warm my tires by swerving back and forth as I start out.
