  1. Funny you should say that (excess hydrocarbons), because after I posted this and read another thread where people mentioned you could feel the leak, I checked and both sides leak, but only the left side pops. I can usually keep it from popping by not closing the throttle all the way. Carbs have been off before (before I owned it), Two of the bowls are on backwards (can't get to the drains). It seems to run fine, but need to get in there and have a look. RSTDdog
  2. So is the leak pictured above enough to cause intermittent pop on decel? I have located a similar leak on the left side and also a pop on decel from the left side. Thanks RSTDdog
  3. Bumping this. Would like to know more. Thanks, RSTDdog
  4. Thanks,Just wondering about it, I have only locked the rear once on my bike momentarily. I plan to make some and give it a try. No curves in Florida to speak of, but I hit the floor boards if I Lean in to much on left and right turns. We are going to do some riding in NC, GA and TN on the way to the Moto GP in Indy. Anything I can do to add some cornering clearance will help. RSTDdog
  5. Does the leveling link Mod make the rear lock up sooner than it already does in stock trim? Seems it might since raising the rear would shift some weight forward. Thoughts? Thanks, RSTDdog
  6. Goose what's the build date on the new front tire out of curiosity? I Just got 3 year old new one- date code 3807.Only 1.5 to balance. RSTDdog
  7. The Dunlop E3 front I just got was 3807. Same as others have been getting. My Indy dealer got it through Tucker Rocky Distributing. It looked just fine though. I wonder if there was a lot of production and then the economy tanked and lots of inventory left. 2007 was when things really started sliding. RSTDdog
  8. August 28 and 29, 2010. Anyone from Here going? We have a group from my work going, Six of us so far. We are trailering bikes to Atlanta. Then riding from Atlanta to Indy, We are leaving from Atlanta on Friday. Plan to be there on time for the flat track race on Saturday Night. The Moto GP Race is at the brickyard on Sunday. If anyone is going and wants to meet up, drop me a line. Derrek RSTDdog
  9. I have thought about this too.I know there are places that do diamond cut and other effects to the fin edges, but don't remember if they do the lower ones or just the ones already done by yamaha. I think it would look good. You could be the first! RSTDdog
  10. Gary, Thanks for taking time to do that. I got my terms turned around. That makes sense to me now. On an RSV or TD, why would the type of splitter used matter Stock vs Vmax or other? Anytime I have changed brake lines on other bikes, they just seem like a manifold to me, 1 in 2 out, straight through. Thanks, Derrek
  11. Area of a circle is pi x radius squared. Radius is 1/2 diameter. Thus pi x (1/2 Diameter) squared. The pressure (pounds per square inch) out of the master cylinder is equal to the force applied on the lever x the area of the piston. So pressure(psi)= Force(pounds) x Area 10psi= 10lbs x 1 square inch 15psi= 10lbs x 1.5 square inches (or 15 lbs x 1 square inch) The above are examples, but the 5/8 (15.8mm) master cylinder will make more pressure than the 14mm master cylinder with the same force applied to the bore piston and equal stroke. I agree with using the parts matched the way Yamaha designed it. Now I just want to know why its that way. The above is simplified and doesn't take into account fluid dynamics or differences in the stroke length. A question for Mr. Google perhaps... Rstddog
  12. Currently a 2006 RSTD Midnight. Felt great from the first time I rode it. I was between this and an FJR1300 (didn't like the on/off FI) while looking for bikes after a Ten year hiatus from riding with the exception of two fix, ride and sell projects in the interim: 81 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim and 82 Honda CB650SC Nighthawk. Neither of these quite cut it after selling my 1992 ST1100 ABS TCS (in Candy Glory Red, one of Honda's Best Colors) that I owned for 5 years. If I were to get a second bike it would be another ST1100. Before that I put a bunch of miles on a 78 Yamaha XS750 Special (The Triple) Anyone see the constant??? I learned wrenching and riding on 1974 CL450 Honda and had two of those in Sapphire Blue at one time and also had KZ400LTD. I know its more than you asked for but it got me to thinking about past rides... RSTDdog
  13. Thanks Mike. I had seen your earlier post somewhere that you found them. If my local independent dealer could still get it, the price through him was only 104.95. Since he's putting the tire on, I prefer to order it through him. For 120.00 I can get the E3 so I'll probably go that route. Parts Unlimited has been changing the B/O release date once a month since April on the Michelin. I think someone else indicated Michelin may be coming out with a replacement. My dealer and another local dealer here got good deals (closeouts) on the Commander in the Harley Sizes. Thanks again for the reply. Derrek RSTDdog
  14. I changed my Clutch fluid today. If you think it feels good after changing the fluid, Take off the clutch lever and clean and polish the brass pivot insert and the chrome pivot bolt for the lever and the other brass pivot in the lever that engages the plunger on the master cylinder. My lever was creaking while I was bleeding. Took everything apart, cleaned and polished the pieces, reassembled with grease.....Smooth like butter. Reduces lever effort as well. This is an often overlooked maintenance item. Clean and grease works much better than just spray lubing the pivots. Try it, you'll like it..... RSTDdog
  15. I'm probably over thinking it a bit. The Commander was new on the bike when I got it and I have been running the Commander/Bridgestone combo for 5000 or so miles with no ill affects. Get some howling on corners. Unless someone has a compelling reason not to do this, I think I'm going with the E3 on the front since I want to end up with a pair of those eventually. Thanks, RSTDdog
  16. So I'm of the running matched tires school, but finances and an otherwise perfectly good rear tire (Michelin Commander with about 5k) have me exploring options. I can't get a Matching Michelin Commander front tire. Parts Unlimited is the only importer for Michelin Tires and they are on backorder since April. New B/O release date is 9/2/2010 but need a new tire before that. Going to the Moto GP Races at Indy end of August. Have 16K on the Front Brickstone and its time. My local independent dealer is competitive on tires with the net (within $5.00). Prefer to give him the business. He has offered up the Pirelli Route 66 Front as an option and close tread match to the Michelin. Saw Goose's write up on the Pirelli and some other comments and seems it would be an improvement over the Brickstone. I'm considering getting the E3 front now since its not much more money than the Pirelli and in another 5k or so when the Michelin wears, getting the E3 rear. E3 rear has more capacity which I like since I plan to add a tour pack. Any input is appreciated. Anyone with adverse handling experiences with this combo (E3 front Michelin Rear) Michelin Commander rear tread pattern looks alot like the old 491 series Dunlop to me. Thanks! RSTDdog
  17. Economy of scale. Auto shocks fit multiple applications and years and they are mfg in large quantities (probably by the millions). Considering that the 2nd Gen shock only fits Ventures and TD Its a very small aftermarket. I would be surprised if the production run by Works is more than 100 units at a time. RSTDdog
  18. Post the part number they installed from the service ticket (should be on there). I have an 06 Midnight. Per service records from the prior owner mine has had the basket replaced. I ride with a full face helmet and I can hear mine still. I would like to compare mine to those that consider theirs quiet and those that consider them loud. Its definitely worse at some speed and gear combinations than others. Doubt I can get Yamaha to try fixing it again. I have considered pulling it apart just to see what basket is in it. Let us know how you make out. RSTDdog
  19. While I agree he may have a leak or other problem with the YICS causing or contributing to low vacuum, IF the YICS in the 1st gen venture is similar to the inline 4 YICS, in that the vacuum side of all four intakes is tied together, you would have to block of the YICS in order to accurately Sync the carbs (throttle plates) on the bike. On edit: it would appear that the Venture YICS is a series of hoses and a plastic chamber that ties the vacuum side of the intakes together. This is different than the inline 4 blocks with a 3/8" diameter port tying the intakes together. If you don't have the YICS blocked off while you are syncing the carbs, all four intakes are tied together and the vacuum readings will be an average of all 4 cylinders. Changing the sync screw on one will change the readings on all the carbs. Yamaha makes a block off tool that goes into the in line 4 bikes. I had a 650 maxim with YICS and had to borrow the block off tool to accurately sync the carbs. I still think the OP has other issues, but there is a procedure for Syncing carbs on YICS models. I would "Venture" a guess its in the tech section. (on edit: The tech section doesn't say anything about blocking of YICS for Sync on a Ist GenVenture, but doesn't say what year the SM pages are from either. Later first gens don't have YICS) RSTDdog
  20. Not 100% on this but I think YICS was only on the inline 4 cylinder yamaha's. And in order to sync those carbs you needed a YICS block off tool. The YICS on the inline 4's was a long port machined through the head effectively tying all four intake manifolds together. If the Venture has a version of this YICS, you will need to block it off to properly sync the carbs. I heard his bike at the M&E and the rpms would hang for a while when revving before dropping back off (indication of leaning out). He also indicated that turning the mixture screws didn't seem to affect anything. Scud- Try the heat test (you are looking for a cold exhaust pipe when the bike is running or one that is not as hot as the other's. This will indicate the problem cylinder. More than likely you will be "Venturing" back into the carburetors. RSTDdog
  21. Thanks. Just wondering. They look similar to the Platinum Burners from Wally World. RSTDdog
  22. Speaking of Mercury sticks, mine are about 20 years old and I think some of the Mercury has evaporated over the years. They still work but I am getting air pockets in the columns during use. I don't think affects the accuracy, since you can hear the out of sync typically. Anyone know if you can you still get Mercury?? Sorry to HiJack RSTDdog
  23. Which Bullet/driving lites are you using? Thanks, RSTDdog
  24. If you don't do it already, drag the rear brake in slow turns. Allows you to keep the engine loaded against the throttle and clutch and regulate the maneuver speed. This also works well for staying upright at real slow speed without putting your feet down. We have a bridge I cross in the morning going to work. It can be bumper to bumper. I practice timing, balance and brake dragging by trying to cross without putting my feet down. Its about 2 miles across the bridge. My comment on Safety gear is this: If I were the only one on the road, I probably wouldn't wear it, but since I'm not......... Also donot recommend crossing the Everglades (41 or the Alley) without a Full face helmet, large windshield or preferably Both. RSTDdog Riding with a helmet so long that I'm uncomfortable riding with out one.
  25. Link to my albums at VR with Photos from this years event. Thought I had taken more but evidently not. Some good pictures, you should get the idea. Cool bike with special sidecar built by the Tampa chapter for one of their own. Good turn out, over 300 people. Always the first Saturday after Easter. Mark your calendar for next year. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/album.php?u=5823 rstddog
