  1. I will also agree with the above. I have considered a wider tire primarily because I think it will look better, But, depending on the recommended rim widths, the above holds true and you end up with less net rubber on the road. I'd like to up grade to a 17 inch rear wheel so I can run radials front and rear (I have a strat front wheel with a radial), And thought about using an FJR rear rim, but then theres a whole another set of issues to work out. So far a bias rear and radial front hasn't been an issue. Your groove tracking could also be the brand of tire or the tread patterns. Other than that, At 21k miles if they haven't been checked, steering head bearings can make it feel loose an dpossibly exagerate any groove track sensations. Can't help much with the what's the largest that fill fit beyond what's been posted. RSTDdog
  2. Cool!! :cool10:Just seeing this. My wife wanted a new computer. This is officially the first thing I have ever won in a drawing. Hope to try and make some of the VR events next year. Thanks for putting this all together! Derrek RSTDdog
  3. Pilot screw adjustment is best (ideally) done with an EGA Exhaust Gas analyzer. While every good shop should have one, most don't and neither do most mechanics. There is typically no "set number of turns out". When tuned with an EGA you will find that none of the screws will be set the same. Yamaha provides threaded ports on eac of the exhaust head pipes to insert EGA probes. The options for adjusting mixture I am aware of are 1. EGA. 2 Lean Drop method. 3 Color tune product. I am not familiar with the Color tune product but a search will turn up discussion of it. 2 to 2 1/2 turns out is a good starting point for mixture screws. Prior to EGA's the lean drop method was typically described for setting mixture if the original settings were out. You will need a good tachometer (not the one on your bike if you have added one) to see small changes in rpm. Some people also do this procedure "by ear". I'm working from memory, but generally this is how its done. FIrst you start the bike and warm it up to operating temperature and set the idle speed to spec first. Then turn one mixture screw slowly in or out as necessary untill the maximum idle speed reading is obtained Changes (increases) of 100 to 200 rpm are not uncommon. Once the maximum idle speed is obtained ( whatever that happens to be) on that cylinders adjustment turn the pilot screw in to drop the rpm by 50 (So if you started at 1000 rpm, turned the screw until you got to 1150, turn mixture screw in until it drops to 1100) Now reset to the spec idle speed with the idle speed screw and move on to the next cylinder and repeat. After completing the above on all cylinders, re check the sync. You can use your sync stick while doing the above procedure as well since typically the max vacuum in a cylinder will also be when you are at max rpm. The sync stick readings should change while you are adjusting the mixture as that cylinder starts burning more (or less) efficiently. I would not resync between each mixture adjustment though, just use for a visual tool to see changes if by ear is not your thing. If you have a good shop nearby with an EGA I would pay them shop time to do it with an EGA. If not the above will get it pretty close. RSTDdog
  4. With respect to the high pitch whine at low speeds, try dragging (lightly applying) first the rear brake and then the front brake. That might help tell you if its a brake related noise. Or possibly isolate the nosie to front or rear. Don't forget to check the rear pads if its new to you. On many of these bikes the rear pads wear unevenly. WHile your at it check the front pads. Is the noise at idle a true grinding noise or more of a grumble?? If the carbs are out of sync, they can make some some unusual noises at idle. With the clutch pulled in the trans is disengaged. When you release the clutch the main shaft is spinning. WHen the engine is out of sync you can get noises from there. WIth 61K miles I would check the rear wheel splines and pins for grease (though this usually results in clicking noise). Also pull the rear pumpkinn and check, clean lube the splines on both ends of the drive shaft. Look at the records and see when the last time the differential fluid was changed and whether there are notes to the affect of the splines being lubricated. These are the things that immediately come to mind. On edit, here is a recent thread on cleaning greasing the drive pins and splines with two very good links with pictures. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=62855 RSTDdog
  5. That looks really nice!!! I have a midnight model and Yamaha just Chromes over the casting marks and flaws that you sanded out. The lower triple is still black, not polished like yours. Very Nice Job. That takes time and patience! RSTDdog
  6. I would check that you didn't inadvertently loosen or change the connections at the wires and plug caps and that every thing is still tight and properly seated etc. Your pulling twisting and moving the wires when changing plugs. Not hard to disturb that plug cap to wire connection since they just thread onto the end, particularly if the wires are old. Let us know what you find out. RSTDdog
  7. I'd say that's a very good bet. They already have the fairing and lowers for the Strat Deluxe, all they need is a trunk, cruise, and cassette deck and they will be all set. RSTDdog
  8. As you suggested your self, try switching brands. If you can find them, try Nippon Denso Plugs. Most Aisian car mfrs will spec NGK and NIppon Denso numbers in the Owners Manual. My Mazda Miata specs either of these. I think Toyota and Hyundai do as well. I'm 9000 miles in on NGKs on my RSTD and seem to be OK still, Starts and Runs fine, I know Yamaha Specs changing them at 8000 in the OM on the 2nd Gen IIRC. If I read it correctly, even if you clean them well and re gap, its still a hard start until you get brand new ones? Switching brands seems easiest thing to try first, Let us know how you make out on your plug test. RSTDdog
  9. I have a Bakup Backrest that I used with the Stock RSTD seat. Really liked it. I have switched to Venture Pillow Top seats and need to modify it to work with those, Although riding with out it after having it hasn't been a real issue for me. I need to contact Bakup and see if can get just the venture bracket and add my backrest with out having to buy a whole new separate one. The Bak UP is nice and well made. Not that easy to adjust while riding though, particularly if you where gloves. RSTDdog
  10. When I Had some ads up before, If I did not renew it via the link sent to me email (because I didn't have access or forgot), it appears it just marked it sold by default. Thats likley whats happening with the bikes if they did not renew. I could still either renew via the link although time was up and the status would change or manually edit it back . I really liked the classified set up with the Buy It Now link in the ad. Two of the three items I sold recently were via the Buy it Now link, and that automatically marked it Sold as well, convenient too. It seemed to work real nice for me. Used the money for Cody and Vogel raffle tickets. Sorry to see that format for the classifieds going away. Thanks for the hard work and providing it though. Derrek RSTDdog
  11. What Freebird said. Just plug it in to your mac and see if it shows up as an external drive and navigate to the pictures, copy and paste the .jpg files. Another option is remove the card from the camera and insert it in to your card reader. Copy and paste the files from the card. MACs being graphics oriented computers, I will assume it has a card reader. You can open a .jpg (JPEG) file if someone sends you one right? Now quit stalling and post up some pics of the handywork. 12. You are correct, I missed the fender rail and didn't look close enough to notice the grips either. And Globewalker pointed out the Driver back rest. Looks like it has a Goldwing style vent in the windshield (I want one of those) and can't tell if it has a drink holder or oif thats something on the shelf behind the bike. One of the benefits of Used over new, is they will often have accessories already installed and it dosen't typically affect the price. If you shop you can usually find one with accessories for the same price as one with out. Good Job, and Welcome. RSTDdog
  13. Did you buy new OEM Parts, or did you put your old OEM parts back in? What are you running for plugs now? I don't remember the last time I replaced a bad spark plug, dirty or worn maybe but not failed. Your failure seems odd. I would send all the parts to NGK, tell them the application your using it on and get their take. If anything they will send you replacements no charge for PR I bet and tell you why they think it failed. Running NGK plugs and Wire set in my Miata, No problem. NGK in my Yamaha outboard. No issues with the NGK in my bike. The pre Gap is always spot on on every plug. Used to run the NGK Gapless cross over for Evinrude with no issues. Sorry your having issues, hope you figure it out. 14. Nice!!! I like the two tone ones, that one is sharp. And it already has the passing lamps and rear rack to boot, that's nearly 400.00 in accessories. No problem running 5-10 psi in the rear. Run what feels good. The Prior Owner of mine ran 0 psi. Riding two up with my wife I run around 40psi. I don't bother dropping it for solo, don't mind it a little stiffer personally. I'll try giving you a call tomorrow. Derrek RSTDdog
  15. Anyone know his paypal addy or if he has one? More importantly does his wife have access? He currently doesn't have any ads running and its not in his profile. I guess posting his paypal addy here would be alright since they had the ones Posted in the open forum for Vogel and Cody. With Freebird's blessing of course. Derrek RSTDdog
  16. I posted this idea in the prayer request thread, but it may get lost or missed there. Even with good insurance, With minimum 30 days in the hospital, out of work, rehabilitation, etc their out of pocket expenses are likley to be huge. I know that Don (Freebird) only does this on a very selective basis, and if I am over stepping my bounds posting this let me know. If he has a paypal addy using that would be easiest but would not be good to post in open forum perhaps. Anyway, 100 people $100 dollars that's 10 grand, 200 people at $50, that's also 10 grand. That would cover 20% of 50 K medical bill assuming he's got 80/20 coverage(30 days will likley approach exceed 100K) Skip a night out to Carraba's for Ponch. If someone knows Ponch's paypal addy or has another idea to set this up, I'm good for the first $100.00. Derrek RSTDdog
  17. Have never met him, but tragic nonetheless. Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. On another note in terms of help, even with good insurance, 30 days minimum in the hospital, out of work and rehab after, their out of pocket will be huge. Can we set up a fund for donations and who here usually manages that? Someone close in Houston would be ideal. If Ponch has a paypal addy, using that would be another option I suppose. No matter how you slice it ( please no one take offense) prayers wont pay the bills. All the best and speedy recovery for him and his family. Derrek RSTDdog
  18. Jerry, Here's an RSTD on the FOrt Myers Craigslist if your still looking. Just listed yesterday http://fortmyers.craigslist.org/lee/mcy/2540645656.html RSTDdog
  19. I think just a flex shaft adapter for a dremel is like 30-40.00 alone. That looks like a good kit and it has a 2 year warranty.
  20. The part number you listed is for 2008 models and up (see the list of models that it fits on the boats.net site you linked). Your Avatar info says you have a 2005. If its a 2005 according to this its a different part number ( 5FB-Y4617-00-00) but its the same from 1998 to 2007. Click the part number for the assembly in the link below and it will show all the models that part number fits fits. boats.net is one of the few parts sites that does this. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/2005/V%20STAR%20MIDNIGHT%20CUSTOM%20-%20XVS650T/DRIVE%20SHAFT/parts.html
  21. If that front tire did not have at least 36 psi in it it will definitely feel heavy. I run 38 psi in my front tire. Just because its at a dealer, don't assume they checked the tire pressure. Get them to put 38 in the front 41 in the rear and 25 pounds in the rear shock and take it for another ride. These are great bikes but they are not light. However the extra weight makes them stable on the highway at the expense of some slow speed handling. I don't know of many bikes that won't be hot riding here in Florida. I always wear boots so don't notice heat on my feet that much. Down here in August my whole body is hot, even with the windshield off. As mentioned you can put high way pegs on the front crash bar. I trimmed down the heel toe shifter so I can put my feet back on the floor board if i want them under me instead of in front of me. My bike won't be back down here from vacation for at least another month or you could come by and check it out seeing that we're almost neighbors. I have made some changes to mine, there's pics posted in threads and in my profile. Mine has some whine and chirp but have nothing to compare to having not ever ridden another one. Prior owner had the basket changed and he said it was better. Also to fairly compare, you have to test ride every bike with the windshield on. With the windshield off on mine you cant hear it (I wear a full face helmet). There's one for sale on craigslist up in Tampa (parrish). Been on there for a while might be able to make a deal on it. Anyway let us know what you end up with regardless of the brand. RSTDdog
  22. It seems from the below response the Hagon shock can be adjusted for a load range between 175Lbs to about 420lbs max. So its within 23 lbs of Yamahas Max rating. If your use falls in this range, You should be good. Below confirms, As others have stated, it does not seem that Hagon will offer an uprated option anytime soon if at all. I do really like the Hydraulic remote preload adjuster. Fast resposne to my inquiry. I sent it late Saturday via the web, received my inbox this morning at 10:27am EST which is 7:27am PST. My Inquiry: Name : Derrek Verlaan > e-Mail : dXXXXX@XXXXX.net > Phone : 2XX-6XX-6XXX > Please contact me regarding...: Hagon Monoshocks > Subject : Hagon Monoshock for Yamaha Royal Star Venture > Comments : Inquiring about the Hagon Monoshock for > Yamaha Royal Star Venture application. I have a 2006 Yamaha Royal Star Tour > Deluxe, but per Yamaha it uses the same OE shock as the 99 and up ROyal Star > Venture models. Can you tell me if the base shock you offer for $399 is rated > for the Maximum load Capacity of the bike, Per Yamaha of 443 Lbs Rider, > passenger and Luggage? If not what would be the charge to have the shock made to meet the 443 lb > manufacturer load capacity? I ride frequently two up with luggage with weight > near the manufacturer limit. > > Thank You for your time and assistance. > > Derrek Verlaan Hagon US Distributor Dave Quinn Motorcyle response (Maggie): So sorry, not sure we are going to be able to help here. Hagon monoshocks for your 2006 Royal Star Venture are special order items, 3-4 weeks at this time of year. Our cost is $394 for a shock with manual spring preload adjustment. Hagons 'Off-the-shelf' shocks are assembled for an average rider- there is enough adjustability in the stock shock to cover a range of loading from 175lbs to about 420lbs max (rider, passenger and gear). Unfortunately at this time Hagons cannot supply an uprated shock for this application and they have refused orders for loading above that figure. We have urged them to develop an uprate, as the bulk of North American owners do load the bikes to the manufacturer's limit and beyond, but an uprate is not currently available. Can you give us a breakdown of your loading? Your weight, passenger weight, luggage weight and estimated max loading? 23. Not sure what you are looking for but here are some First gen Parts. Not Mine. Just noticed them surfing. http://fortmyers.craigslist.org/lee/mcy/2476740792.html
  24. I was working from memory, have to go see if I can find the thread that has a cut away of the OEM shock, but I recall it has a spring inside of it of some sort. You would have to destroy the shock to get the spring out. I don't know if it would work dimensionally or not, just an idea. Of course the load rating for the OE shock also takes into account the Air Assist. I don't think you can go riding fully loaded with 0psi in the shock (at least it wouldn't be a good idea) In retrospect as noted above, even if one were to get the spring out, the spring itself without the air assist may not have suffcient capacity on its own. Of course assuming it fits, you could add preload to it. In another thread on the Hagon shock ( I need to look for it;On edit: Here it is djb47 post about 2/3 way down on page 1 http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=20363&highlight=Hagon), somone requested one to be built for 500lbs of loading and Hagon said no way. Thats a request not far off from the Maximum load capacity of the bike. Heavy Duty to me implies that the shock (or in this instance Spring used to build it) is adding capacity greater than that of the OE Design. The implication in the other thread was that the Hagon shock comes equipped with a spring for the "Average Rider". The request for a spring with greater capacity could not be met. I still want to know, is the Hagon shock currently available for sale rated for the maximum load capacity of the Venture? I haven't seen this question answered. My OE shock with 21K miles is still Ok. I know at some point I will be going down this road and am now out of warranty. I ride two up most of the time. Two up is more weight than the OP alone is. It would be great if the Hagon is a viable alternative and out of the box meets the OEM capacity. As someone suggested in the thread linked above, I suppose I should give them a call. RSTDdog
  25. The question to be asking Hagon is : Is the shock/spring combo designed and rated to handle the maximum load capacity of the bike?? Out of the box, a shock specified for the Venture should be at minimum rated for the Maximum load capacity of the bike. I see the term used that the hagon shock comes with a spring for the Average rider. So can this Hagon shock rated for the average rider also accomodate a passenger?? Or would you need the heavy duty spring that may or may not exist to ride two up with a Hagon shock? If the shock is servicable, Could you have it fitted with the spring from a dead OEM shock that presumably should have the correct capacity rating. RSTDdog
