  1. Sounds like the ignition switch is going south. Once the bike starts, jiggle the key and see if it shuts off.
  2. I change mine between 3-5000 depending on when it's handy for me to change it.
  3. What's the rev limiter set at on these bike? 5400?
  4. Oil filters are pretty much universal between Kawasaki, Honda and Yamaha. There is not great advancement in the motorcycle technology. The only differences I have seen are the lengths. It appears to be the same media. I run the Purolator PureOne filter as well, but my bike is out of warranty so I don't have to run a "motorcycle" filter on it.
  5. Whoops. I lied, Rotella is rates CJ-4/SM. So it's approved in diesel engines requiring CJ-4 oil and gasoline motors requiring SM oil.
  6. BTW, my 99 usually is around 28mpg. My best ever was 37mpg and that was riding with a 40mph tailwind at 65mph.
  7. The only way a "premium" fuel will get better mileage is if it does not have ethanol in it. I've seen a couple of stations that advertise their "premium" fuel does not have ethanol in it.
  8. Not true, motor oil is motor oil. Motorcycle oil does not have any special additives to make it "sheer resistant". The transmission doesn't have any effect on the oil itself, the oil isn't trapped between the gears. Caterpiller and John Deere use engine oil in the Hydraulic systems on most of their units. Im sure if engine oil can hold 3000psi on a loader for 4000hrs, then our little motorcycle transmissions are not going to hurt it.
  9. Gotta disagree with ya there. The Rotella is SJ approved. I know plenty of folks that run Rotella in their cars/pickups. I know 1 fella that runs 10,000 miles between changes using Rotella and he has 140,000 on his Dakota.
  10. Still workin'
  11. I wouldn't recommend the MotorCraft oil because it's not very common. If you're out in the middle of nowhere and for some reason you need to add some oil, Rotella is sold everywhere. I personally run 15W40 Rotella and a Purolater PureOne oil filter. Oil change runs me around $18 and takes 10 minutes and 2 beers.
  12. If it was me, I'd just order a set of Harley brackets and then get a set of slip-on mufflers from the local Harley dealer and avoid all the hassles.
  13. The factory Yamaha ones only last me about 6-8000 miles. The standard EBC lasted 14000 miles. This time I installed the EBC HH pads. If you just came off the interstate, then yeah, your rotor's going to be hot and the pads are going to smell. I don't think there's anything wrong. I think you probably just use your rear brake a lot. I personally wouldn't be worried about a grooved rotor. A warped rotor would warrant replacement, but not grooved.
  14. Are the threads stripped or it the head of the filter bolt rounded? If the head is just rounded, square off the corners to the next size down and use a smaller socket. Also, you can but special "twist" sockets made to remove a rounded bolt. I just hammered an 8 point socket onto the oil filter bolt on my XJ1100 when I found it rounded.
  15. Yesterday was a sad day for the Darksiders. I mounted up my spare wheel yesterday. It came with a Dunlop E3 on it. Im going to run this tire out. But anywho, riding around the last 2 days, Ive noticed tar snakes again. I didn't feel them with the car tire on, but today, I'd go over one and the rear tire felt like it'd try to pass me. Hopefully this tire will be worn out in a couple of months and I'll be back to the darkside. Has anyone else noticed that you don't feel the tar snakes with the car tire on?
  16. You also look at the V-star 1300. It's very similar to the 950, but with more power.
  17. I have Polk DB401's in my Venture. They are marine grade so you have to worry about them getting wet.
  18. umm..... Is there a mark in the alley behind your house still?
  19. I was told it covered the mufflers and I was blowing bubbles. I was also spinning the rear tire coming up the hill!!
  20. I had to go through a water crossing today at Palo Duro Canyon. I guess Ventures really do handle like a boat!! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwcpStxcv2E]YouTube - watercrossing[/ame]
  21. Ive talked to a couple folks that have em and they all liked it. Also, once the bracket is mounted, you can remove the kit in about 5 minutes and be back on 2 wheels. The kit will also be able to pull a trailer so there's no load on the suspension on the bike.
  22. If he had put in more then 4 liters of diesel, I doubt the bike would have ran if he had run it out. Diesel will actually raise the octane rating of gasoline to a point.
  23. Ouch, $140, it'll have to wait.
  24. As your resistance (load) increases, the amperage draw will increase off the battery, which can lead to a voltage drop on the battery if the resistance (load) is too great for the system. Best bet is to tell us what the wattages are of all your accessories. Gloves, pants, lights, vest, GPS, coffee warmer, microwave, etc....
  25. yeah, the HD pipes aren't much louder then stock, just a deeper tone.
