  1. Wow! This is almost a deja vu kinda thing. The bike is in the shop with issues from the Regulator/Rectifier. Up until last week, everything has been fine with my charging system. But, all of a sudden I was using more amps than I could generate. And, then ..., I wasn't getting any spark and couldn't "fire" the bike after cranking it. A long and frustrating trip to STAR Days in Reno this year to be sure. But, the bike is now in the capable hands of my experienced mechanic. Not stuck, just griping a little. Be Safe! Pete.
  2. Hi Guys! I have a 1980 Honda CB 750K which has an pretty old throttle-lock on it that I would like to replace with a more recent made, better quality one. Does anyone have any suggestions for one that isn't too pricey but which is pretty good quality? The attached pictures are what my current one looks like. Thanks for any suggestions! Be Safe! Pete
  3. When I called, I spoke to a gentleman about getting a pair for my second gen. Venture. He told me that he didn't have the specific measurements for my bike. Plus, I changed-out my original handlebars for Flander's Beach Bars, so that makes figuring-out the proper fit even more difficult. I think that if you could install a set of Yamaha grip brush-guards and then get a properly-fitted set of Hippo Hands to install around them, then you might have a pretty effective winter riding tool. I ride in some pretty cold weather during the wintertime sometimes, and I know that I would like to try a set - if only I could figure out the right way to get them measured to fit. Be Safe! Pete.

  5. I absolutely recommend it. It makes things so much easier. Be Safe! Pete.
  6. I live in Orem, Utah at 4,770 feet above sea level, and the bike runs perfectly normal. I ride it up to Park City at 8,000 feet, and it runs fine. When riding down in the Bay Area in California earlier this week, I didn't notice any issues on the way there (same as my return route), or while there. So, that's why I don't think that it's an elevation issue. I could be wrong though, it happens pretty often - ask my wife. Thanks! Pete.
  7. Okay guys, thanks! I'm pretty convinced that it was a vapor-lock related issue. At least it seemed temporary during the peak heat of that riding day and disappeared as it cooled down a bit. Plus, the bike never experiences any issues when it comes to altitude so I know that wasn't it. As usual ..., very helpful replies! Be Safe! Pete.
  8. Last week I received two separate calls on my cell phone stating that there was an issue with my Wells Fargo debit card, and that if I didn't wish for it to be cancelled as a precaution, that I should push a number. The funny thing though, is that I don't have a Wells Fargo account of any kind. So, I just hung-up. I figure that there's no point in automatically confirming anything to a potential scammer. Be Safe! Pete.
  9. Yesterday, I road across the Nevada Desert on HWY 50 on my Venture. As I neared the Utah boarder, temps rose to almost 110 degrees. While I showed that I still had fuel in the tank and I had not yet switched to reserve, I began to feel those momentary surges and sputters which typically occur right before running out of gas. So, I backed-off on my speed and somewhat "drafted" behind a truck for the last 25 miles before I reached a gas station. After filling-up and getting back on the highway, I again began to feel similar surges and sputters occasionally as I attempted to reach speed. This time however, I knew full well that I had plenty of fuel, so that couldn't be it. Then, I began to think that perhaps the in-line fuel filter I installed some time ago might need to be changed. After a little while the temperature dropped down to the upper 90s and my fuel feed issue seemed to disappear over the last 100 miles. So, was it probably a heat-related issue in the carburetors or more likely the fuel filter? If it was the heat which was affecting the performance, what's the best way to deal with it when stuck in the heat? And, if it is the heat which is causing the problem, what exactly is happening? Anyway, we arrived safe and sound, albeit a little bit on the crispy side. Thanks guys and Be Safe! Pete & Sandy
  10. If you were a deer about to cross the highway and as you looked down the road and saw that bike coming towards you . . . I don't know, but I bet that it works just as good as those deer-whistles. I'm just guessin'! Be Safe! Pete.
  11. Three of us (who are members of the Provo, Utah Chapter #431), are coming out to STAR Days. And, you're right about the Valparaiso, Indiana chapter. They typically have a good showing are a nice bunch of folks. Sandy and I met them at our very first STAR Days in Longmont, Colorado five years ago, and because of the great impression they made with us, we decided to join STAR and really get in to riding. We hope to meet and make some new friends out there, and especially some more of the VentureRider folks. So, if you see us please introduce yourself and say "hi". Be Safe! Pete.
  12. Saturday morning we head out of Utah on the way to STAR Days in Middleton, WI. Our route should take us out on I-80 across Wyoming and in to Nebraska. The first night, we will stay in Sidney, NB and the second night we will stay in Clive, IA. I expect that this stretch will be more of an endurance ride than a pleasure cruise. My question is, does anyone know of any "can't miss" sights along our way to Middleton? I'm pretty sure that it's just prairies and fields of corn, right? On the way back, we're going out on I-90 across Iowa and South Dakota, and then down through Wyoming. I don't expect that there is much to see in Iowa or until we get to the Black Hills area is there? I just don't like to miss seeing the fun stuff along the way. Anyone else here going to STAR Days? I understand that it probably conflicts with the Cody Rally, but maybe we can go to that next year. Thanks guys! Be Safe! Pete.
  13. This past weekend our STAR chapter (Provo, UT #431), took a ride and I got 226 miles on one tank riding one-up and without any extra gear. When I did stop to fuel, I had to triple-check the numbers because I never get that kind of mileage. Typically, I ride two-up, carry lots of stuff, and drive too fast. Last weekend, I road a lot slower and wasn't carrying a passenger or extra weight. Here are some pictures if you like: Be Safe! Pete.
  14. We call it ... Pot Hole Avoidance Training! Be Safe! Pete.
  15. I lived in New Liskeard / Tri-town for a few months back in 1980. Beautiful area up there! Be Safe! Pete.
  16. I never would have imagined that it would be possible to contain a full-size tank with a simple chain-link fence. A dog perhaps, but a tank? Be Safe! Pete.
  17. Twice now, I have discovered by surprise that my inside rear brake pad was completely worn down. And, last year I had to replace the rotor because of it. You're right, it was expensive. Fortunately, this year I discovered the wear while making seasonal riding preparations, before it became an issue. The first time it happened, I was pulling a trailer through New Mexico - that was really inconvenient! So, why is it that one pad wears-out and unevenly compared to the other one? Be Safe! Pete.

    Sea Foam

I was just in to O'Riley Auto Parts (the old Checker Auto), yesterday, and I saw that they had Sea Foam for "two for the price of one". That's a little less than five bucks per can. Not too bad a deal! Be Safe! Pete.
  19. Speaking of odd things we see people riding with ... last summer we were on our way to Bear Lake (Utah) and we saw another rider on I-15 with a passenger in front of him. Fortunately, my wife had her camera at the ready - check out the pic. Be Safe! Pete.
  20. I typically like to top it off ... unless my bike is going to be parked out in the sun on a hot day. There have been a couple of times when I haven't really paid attention to this, and shortly thereafter I found expanding fuel overflowing the from around the cap and giving my tank a gasoline bath. Not a comfortable sight when you need to start it up to ride. Fortunately, the couple of times this has happened, my bike did not burst in to flames after hitting the starter button. Be Safe! Pete.
  21. Yet, one more example of me not listening when I should have, and it cost me a few bucks. Funny, I usually shop around a little more carefully. Next time, they will get the business. Thanks guys & Be Safe! Pete.
  22. I called the MotorcycleSuperstore this morning, and double-checked on the availability of the Elite IIIs/Touring Elite IIIs (same tire). Apparently, the gal who I spoke with yesterday, somehow confused a note which she read which previously said "back-ordered" with the word "discontinued". Either way ..., they are still available. Unfortunately, their prices appear to have gone up significantly a few weeks ago. Oh well, at least I can keep riding on the tires I like for another season. Be Safe! Pete.
  23. I too have seen something subtle here. What is the difference between these two models? Is there one, or did they just drop the word Touring off the model name? This is what I am replacing: Item Quantity Total Item Price Elite 3 Front Tire Size - 150/80H-16 SKU# 157506 1 $106.99 Elite 3 Tour Rear Tire Size - MV85HB-15 SKU# 119995 1 $130.99 I'm pretty sure that MotorcycleSuperstore/com is still a reputable dealer. I have purchased a number of sets of tires from them in the past without any issue. And, pehaps I just got someone on the phone today who just didn't know what she was talking about. I'll call them again tomorrow to double-check. It would be nice to be able to verify if what she said about the T.E. IIIs being officially discontinued is true though. And, I don't really care where I purchase my next set from, as long as I am getting new tires with a full warranty. And of course, it would also be nice to find the best price. As always, all of your suggestions and input are so much appreciated. Be Safe! Pete.
  24. I just got off the phone with the MotorcycleSuperstore.com wanting to order (for the third year in a row), another set of these: (I have been very happy with them!) Dunlop Elite 3 Front Tire Color - --, Size - 150/80H-16 SKU# 157506 On Order $106.99 1 $106.99 Dunlop Elite 3 Tour Rear Tire Color - --, Size - MV85HB-15 SKU# 119995 Approved $130.99 1 $130.99 But, I was informed that the Touring Elite III Rear Tire has been discontinued, and they said that it wasn't replaced with another model. What's up with that? So, I figured that I would go back to the Avon Venoms (which I also like a lot), but they want $76.00 more for the Avons than I paid for the T.E. IIIs last year. Does anyone have any suggestions on a different model comparable to either the T.E. III, or the Avon Venom, or a different dealer I should check-out? I have tried Metzler's, but don't really want to go back to them. Thanks guys & Be Safe! Pete.
  25. You're gonna love that ride! We have made this ride three years in a row we like it so much. One tip we learned, is that if you're doing it in the summer months, go on a weekday during the early part of the day and that will greatly reduce the frustration of the crowds. The Avenue of the Giants is meant to be leisurely cruised and enjoyed. But, I think that being stuck behind a long line of motor-homes would not be quite as fun. Here's a little teaser video of that ride that I made from last year's trip: Be Safe! Pete.
