  1. wow this bike has the fatboy tires on front and rear. I am having trouble seeing how you would even ride this, but some are saying with the bigger footprint on the road it will handle better. http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/08/pl_motor_jafm/ Whaddya think? pretty different huh? Brian
  2. I recently replace my old Dunlop E2 tires with 404's. I'm not unhappy with the 404's but I can tell they are less tire than the E2's were and I'll probably look for some more robust tires when these wear out. Can you get anywhere the same miles out of E3's that you could the E2's ? I could run the E2's forever. I know Metzler and Michelin, Avon etc... make some great tires too but I had such good luck with the E2's I'll probably stick with Dunlop since most of my riding these days is old-geezer style anyway. The E2's are hard to find now and are too pricey so I'm wondering how people who have had them like the E3's and if people that have previously ran E2's also like the E3's ?
  3. Looking at the max. load ratings on some of these tires and I'm wondering, on these bikes, what the weight distribution is? Say these 1st gens weigh about 800 pounds, then add 70 pounds for a tank of gas, oil & filter, plus another 250 pounds for the rider, clothing, leathers, boots, gloves, helmet, keys, pocket knife etc..., that's roughly 1120 pounds. How much of that weight load rides on the front tire and how much on the rear ? Is it about the same for the RSV's ?
  4. OK...I got rid of my Dunlop 404 tires (front and back). The ride home (appeared) to be MUCH different with the Dunlop Elite 3's on the bike. The bike (appeared) to handle much better. The bike (appeared) to have much more grip. AND The bike (appeared) to have NO "squirrely" shifting around when going over bumps, lines and tar snakes. So what is REALLY going on here? Why the "percieved" change? What causes it? I realized just by changing the tires that the grip should improve, but the handling to the degree I am seeing it kind of amazes me. Are SOME OF THIS PERCEIVED changes psychological (placebo effect)? What is everyone's opinion on this... Wally
  5. All the people here had great ideas but I ended up at walmart to go shopping and found a percolate pot plus a nice seasoning cart and a toaster the only thing is anyone gonna come visit me the end of sept. Plus I put new tires rims and valve stems on the trailer. I am so looking forward to get out of dodge.
  6. I have been reading and reading and reading and not getting a good feel for my situation. So I will ask the experts! I have a new Piggybacker XL that I bought last year and haven't used. I'm getting ready for a trip in August so figured I should try this thing out. I find a slow speeds I have a very bad shimmy and smooths out a little the faster I go but to tell you the truth I didn't feel very good the way it handled so I kept it at 80kms max/48mph. I wouldn't dare go any faster and headed back to the garage. These are my specs. Trailer Tires - 28psi Rear Shock - 26.5psi Front Tire 42psi Rear Tire 49.5psi Front Forks - I guess 6lbs? on pump 3 strokes before 10Lb mark Tongue Weight 33lbs (weighed by lifting off ball....it was 28 when i chked off bike) Trailer Weight 248lbs (weighed with scale on each tire with tire on opposite side level with scale) Trailer Tires were balanced So what do you think...... Is it possible my tires are not mounted square to trailer frame? Looking for ideas.....I have heard it said many a time that you don't know its behind you so it has to be something I'm not doing right.I can tell you I knew it was there and scared the crap out of me..... Thanks Keith
  7. Well I have new tires coming tomorrow and I have to take off my tires and take them to the dealer for mounting and balancing I found the tech article by frebird on rear tire removal is there one for the front tire? Are there any others for reference and what other things should I be doing with the tires off besides greasing the rear splines Jeff
  8. well I back. been away for awhile. Well as a lot of you know I ha been riding a Road* for about 1-1/2 years now. Well went in to get some new tires and there on the floor was a brand new just out of the crate 08 RSTD-s silver bike. for those of you that know me I am a sucker for a silver bike. to make a long store short in for new tires out with a new bike.
  9. I need to buy tires and I have a couple of question #1 - 150/80-16 or the narrower MT90B16 on the front #2 - how many of you put RIDE ON or some other product in your tires #3 - Is there anyone out there in WI that has a tire changer that would be willing to give me a hand changing my tires? I would appreciate the help! FYI - I am going to buy the Elite 3's for tires they seem to be the tire of choice for a majority of the people on this forum Thanks and ride safe Jeff
  10. I've been talking with Dave, over at Wide Whitewall Tires (Hobbycar.com) and he said he can have a run of WHITEWALL car tires specially made for the VR Darksider Members interested! They will be whitewall on BOTH sides, and they WILL be car tires in a 165-80-15 or 155-80-15. He asked me to get an idea of how many people might be interested, and he will get back to me on pricing info. SO- If it's something you're interested in, let me know. Either reply to the post or PM me. If you have any questions you'd like me to ask him, feel free, and I'll email him on Monday with the list of questions gathered! So far, one of the questions I plan on asking him, since they are manufacturing the tire, is can they put the VR logo, or the mottoe somewhere on the tire.. That'd be sweet... Maybe overkill, but who cares?!
  11. I wanted to share with the members a product I purchased yesterday at a thrift store. While wandering around a thrift store yesterday I came across a table of cleaning products called "LA Totally Awesome". A bottle of the stuff was only a $1.25 so I thought what the heck and bought one. This morning I washed the shower doors with the stuff and it did an okay job so I thought I would try it on "Old Blue" my 96 RSTC. I started with the front tire whitewalls and I couldn't believe it. I sprayed the stuff on and the dirt and grime just ran off. I have found very few products that clean whitewalls to my satisfaction and with this stuff they came out perfect with no elbow grease. I then went to the back tires that were very dirty with grease, grime and exhaust carbon. I sprayed it on and used a toothbrush to lightly scrub. The tires looked like new in minutes. I then continued to wash the entire bike with the stuff and I have never seen it shine like it does now. I am talking showroom.. All for less then a $1.25. If you guys ever see this stuff give it a try. I am going back to the thrift store tomorrow and buying all they have left.
  12. Anyone running these tires on the rear? ... Do you get a "howling" sound at certain speeds? Does it stop or diminish when in a corner?
  13. Need new tires on my 07 midnight venture want to go with the Dunlop E3's or the Avon Venom. I know there are other threads but I was wondering if anyone has boughten tires lately and where's the best deal. When looking at other threads I don't think I could go wrong with either but whats your opinion. Also is there anyone near me, Appleton WI, that might have a tire changer that would be willing to give me a hand changing the tires as well as any other things that should be done while I have the tires off (I was really bummed that I wasn't able to make the maintanance day in WI this last weekend). One other thing are the tires we buy off the internet first quality tire my local dealer told me that places like Motorcyle super store and Denis Kirk are all selling second, tires with flaws, which I don't personally believe. I think that was his way to justify his price over $600 and that was for the standard oem replacements. Has anyone else ever heard of this UPDATE: Tell me what you think of this I went to a local shop that sells dunlop e3"s got a price of $325 installed I asked the about lubing the splines when they had the back tire off and they said it was unnessasary and all it does in make a mess and that they actually wipe off anmy lube on the spline if there is any. So what gives I've seen tech articles on this site on how to lube this spline so it makes me wonder if i should even consider this dealer what do you think Thanks Jeff
  14. Well, after 19,000 miles, I decided it is time to replace the Dunlop E3s. I was hoping to get another 1000 miles out of them. I guess that is a macho thing. But it would be great to say that I got 20k miles on a set of MC tires. Placed the order and should have the new tires before the weekend. They had the front E3 in stock but had to get ther rear from manufacturer. Guess that means I'll get a few more miles on this set. Rear still has some life on it, but the front is into the wear bars. New tires, grease slpines, shaft & hub, new final oil, stearing head bearing service. I got some work to do.
  15. I might sell my 2003 RSV it has around 17000 miles and is in GREAT condition. New ClearView windshield the big one with tint and another that is on the bike in new condition with the Vent. It has the PCW clutch kit also I also have Sampson Fishtails for it but not on the bike. 2 Helmets XL & L with near new J&R headsets. The tires are like new condition. Many Extras on the bike I was going to ask $8350.00 I can send pictures if you would like to see it. I also have 4 new Polk speaker not installed OEM speakers still sound great. http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/VictoriaVett/Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Venture/IMG00055-20100704-1324.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/VictoriaVett/Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Venture/IMG00056-20100704-1330.jpg
  16. i am getting ready to sell my wing, and need some help. not sure what to ask. it is a 2008, premium sound, dark red metallic, about $3000.00 in accessories, 15,000 mi., looks showroom new, been ridden in the rain once, almost new tires, includes extra rear wheel. i was thinking along the lines of $16,000 does this sound like a fair price? bill
  17. Ok I have some 67,000 miles under my 2004 RSV and have been on the Dunlop 404 WWW for the most. Last set I changed to the Elite3 Dunlop. I would like to see if any others have had similar findings. Yes I read about folks getting all kinds of diffrent mileage from all the diffrent tires, but I have the following findings and are looking for another opinion. Dunlop 404 Changed at miles Tire Life Miles 05-20-06 11,655 miles 11,655 05-05-07 22,575 miles 10,920 04-20-08 33,530 miles 10,955 07-12-08 43,614 miles 10,084 05-15-09 51,741 miles 8,127 11-10-09 58,950 miles 7,209 Dunlop Elite3 07-22-10 67,141 miles 8,191 Looking to make a change for more mileage than I have been getting. 80% of the time two up and on the back roads in the mountains. I ride hard on the throttle and like I stole it in the curves. Dunlop 404's I had decent mileage but the performace was lacking, however I did not have the awful tractor tire roar that the Dulop Elite 3 has in the curves. Elite 3 performace in all conditions were unfalable but the noise is terrible. I thought the clutch basket noise was bad. Rear shock still has fluid and still holds air with never leaking. Tires are always checked for pressure before it rolls out of the garage no matter if it is just down to the store. Pressure nevers seems to be low. I always run at 41 PSI. Thoughts from the all great would be appreciated!
  18. I wanted to post a good comment about dealer Turn1 in Plymouth, Indiana. They are a dealer for Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Victory (and Polaris). I had tire troubles with my old Bushtec trailer on the trip to Potato Creek. After several stops and tele calls elsewhere trying to find new tires and tubes, Turn1 took care of me. They had tubes in stock, and ordered a pair of new tires for me which they installed on Thursday as I was leaving the International Rally. They were knowledgeable, and good to work with, and made time for me while I was on the road. And their prices seemed quite fair. I'll point out that they have a pair of new-old stock Ventures on the floor. A 2009 Red/Black, and a 2008 Silver S model. And a used 2009 Seashell/Raven. Also having a Victory factory truck demo days on July 30-31 which I wish I was nearby to take advantage of. http://turn1.com/
  19. OK, I was probably the first rider to post a complaint about the Venom sever sidewall cracking back in '06 after Susanville. Twice. Avon warantee'd both front tires. What I'm wondering is just how many members have experienced sidewall cracking, and on how many tires. So let's start a list. Not interested in all the gorey details, just the facts listed below. PM me and I'll add your info to the list. From all the posts and threads about Avon tires cracking, I'd like to know just how many members are experiencing the problem. This is an after thought, but if you haven't experienced any cracking I'd like to hear from you also. All I'll need would be miles on the tire(s) and number of year(s) on the bike. I just think members are expeiencing way too much sidewall cracking, and sooner or later someone's going to throw a cap and get hurt. Although Avon has been very good on warantees, so far I don't think we've been given the straight story on sidewall cracking. I need the number of tires cracked, milage when replaced, warantee'd?, DOT date, and date replaced. Follow this link to see the results. AVON CRACKING
  20. I just ordered a Harbor Freight flatbed trailer a few days ago. I stopped by a few local dealers that sell trailers etc. Neither had anything i could use along the motorcycle line. Anyway the wife was less than enthused that I started in on the trailer thing in the first place. (she doesnt ride). Anyway one of the dealers just found a used flat trailer that was pulled behind a wing i guess. So the wife will be less than impressed that i bought another trailer. But it was only 35 bucks, and it is titled. Cant go wrong with this deal, so it looks like im gonna have 2 trailers. Guess I will have a smaller and a bigger trailer. This trailer has 8 inch tires which appear to be in good condition, and bearing buddies to boot. The harbor freight trailer is 12 inch tires. so a bigger box may be in order for that one.
  21. Is it redundant to carry an emergency plug repair kit after putting "Ride On" in your tires???...because wouldn't any hole that Ride On isn't able to stop be too big for a plug to repair? Or would the Ride On in the tires prevent a plug from sealing the hole? Just wondering.
  22. Most of you never have this problem as you wear tires out before they age. I don't get to ride much and when I do my time is shared between 2-3 scoots. The 89 had new tires installed in July of 06 with only 5500 miles on them now. They still look new but I'm going to do a close inspection for cracks and dry rot.I'll check the date codes as the tires may have been 1-2 years old sitting on a shelf somewhere. If the tires are 5-6 years old should I be concerned about the age if I can not see any signs of cracking or dry rot?
  23. have any of you guys tryed the kenda tires on your bike?? i recently bought a new kenda tire for the back of my v-star for $72.50 size 17/80/15... when i got the tire i was really impressed.. the tire side wall was rather thick, and the tread design was rather inpressive also.. i have used e tires years ago and they seemed to last for around 12000 miles.. i ordered 1 for my buddies 09 vulcan 900 about 2 months ago.. he now has over 1500 miles on it and it still shows no wear yet.. i ordered them thru denniskirk.com .. got them within 24 hours.. of course they are located here in minnesota.. worth the check out.. it was the kruz tire, that my buddy got.. they up graded his to that, nicer tire than mine, but im happy with mine.. i will tryto get a coupleof pictures up later today..
  24. With help from many members here and the great documentation on the site, I put on a new set of Dunlop E3's and regreased all the necessary spots although I did not take apart the drive shaft. The hub pins were badly rusted but I didnt see any other issues. So I take it out for a ride this morning to break in the tires and I have a new problem. A new noise coming from the rear end. Its a pulsating sound that changes with speed. If I pull the clutch at any speed the noise get far louder. I dont see any marks on the tires so I assume somethign is wrong with the drive train back there. Other then this issue, there are no problems with braking, engine, power handling. Any advice is appreciated. I'll be tearing it down again this morning.
  25. I live in Northern Alberta so finding tires, (and other parts), at a reasonable price is a chore. I did plenty of looking for a new rear tire, (140/90-16 or MU90B-16). I hit every shop in town but I found the best deal, by about 30 bucks at http://www.canadasmotorcycle.ca/dunlop- ... -tire.html. With taxes and free delivery it cost me a total of 160CAD, delivered to my door. Delivery took less than 2 weeks. I payed with Paypal. That may sound a lot for a tire but it was the cheapest I could find for this tire. I am pleased with my purchase there and thought I'd pass this info along.
