  1. OK...with extremely SORE THUMBS, I am happy to say that I have removed ALL of my tank badges. WOW, the tank badges were really stuck on there! Now, the reason I did this is because in June my hometown (Blytheville, AR) is hosting a Car and Motorcycle Show and have paid a professional pinstriper to come in and do some pinstriping on the cars and motorcycles. That doesn't mean I am gonna have pinstriping done on my tank, I may just personalize the trunk or something. I really don't know what I am gonna do yet...which I why I am posting. For those that have removed your tank badges...did you just leave it like that, did you have graphics painted on it, or did you have painted? Or did you do something else. Pictures would be great...am I gonna steal your idea? No, but I might borrow "parts" of it. LOL Wally
  2. Has anyone attempted to put a Venture 6 gallon tank on a RSTC with the 4 gallon tank? Searched and did not find anything.
  3. OK, the 29 Year old, Honda CX -500 sitting in my garage, started leaking fuel from the tank last night. Seeping fuel at the lower edge of the tank. Anyway, don't want to put a lot of money into this thing, for a new tank. I see on the web, there a re several products on the market for makeing fuel tank repairs. Anybody here have any experience with any of the fuel tank leak repair products ?? IF so I'm all " Ears " as they say. Any reccomendations, or horror stories ?? Thanks for any tips
  4. i was thinking. and dreaming about the next MD at freebirds. and thought since minimuffin. likes buckets and water so much. wouldnt it be great if we could rent a dunk tank and put her in it? sell tickets. and donate the money to a good cause like ST judes ect ect. should we take this to a vote???
  5. Below are some pictures of the first four panels from my cousins HD Road Glide. All are being done in a horror film/Halloween theme, with a different theme on each panel. Though side covers, which appear to both be pumpkins. Most of the characters in the panels have been modified to resemble Hogs. The left side of the tank is Freddie Kruger, but with hog features. Not for most people, but what he wanted. There is some extreme detail in theses. The guy that is doing them has put about a week in the tank alone. His bike is the orange on on the right in the last picture as it was. Gary
  6. While wandering thru websites looking stuff today I stumbled on a nice looking RSTD with some road rash on it. Its a write off from insurance but if someone could buy it cheap enough it might be worth while. I know the side bag and the tank damage is pricey to buy new, but a guy might be able to find used.   7. Hi all, I have a 2000 venture with a couple small dents in the tank. How they got there is beyond me? The first dent is about 1" away from the center black strip edge running down the middle of the tank. The second small dent is about 2" away from the center strip edge. The dents are located on the right hand side of the tank maybe 10" up from the seat. My questions are, is there a bib available? or would a tank bib from a tour deluxe work? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
  8. OK...since I have began to REALLY enjoy and like this bike, I have been "making it my own". In the recent weeks I have added some leather fringe, electric gloves (Gerbings), changed out the Tank Bib a couple of times (see pics) and added a Gas Cap cover (yep-covering up that chrome). The leather Tank Bib and Gas Cap cover were done by a lady that rides a Tour Deluxe and I think is a member here...but not sure about that. Anyway, she made me a fancy tank bib, but I also wanted a plain black one (which is what this one is). She does VERY GOOD work also. Windshield is next...I am getting the F4 Customs shield. I just wanted to share some of this with the members here. Wally
  9. Any recommendations on a good tank bag for an 89 VR? Also for a good rear passenger bag. Like to know what kind of features to look for and why.
  10. A friend of mine has this bike, and the gas tank "collapsed inward" - then mostly popped back out - but there is still a visiable dent of there. Does anyone know if a) a dent repair place can fix that type of thing (being it is a gas tank would that hurt the integrity of the tank) - b) is that gas tank interchangable with another STAR model gas tank (I believe it is the smaller 3.8 gallon tank). I have looked on EBAY for her, only couple of scratched up tanks, just trying to gather couple of ideas. Sorry, at the moment, I don't have a picture of this problem. Any ideas / suggestions would be helpful - thank you in advance.
  11. Any of you guys out there ever fitted a tank bag to your mount? Having traded my Pan European in for my 2000 RSV I was left with a brand new Baglux bag but no way of getting a tank bag cover for it to fit on (Baglux don't make one for an RSV). I've tried to see if anything else in the Baglux range might fit ie Kawa, Suzi etc but no luck. Any ideas?
  12. I got this is an email today and had to share it. They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie, as I looked at him lying in his pen.. The shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly. I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street. But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk to. And I had just seen Reggie's advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didn't look like "Lab people," whatever that meant. They must've thought I did. But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes, and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike. For some reason, his stuff (except for the tennis balls --- he wouldn't go anywhere without two stuffed in his mouth) got tossed in with all of my other unpacked boxes. I guess I didn't really think he'd need all his old stuff, that I'd get him new things once he settled in. But it became pretty clear pretty soon that he wasn't going to. I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like "sit" and "stay" and "come" and "heel," and he'd follow them - when he felt like it. He never really seemed to listen when I called his name --- sure, he'd look in my direction after the fourth or fifth time I said it, but then he'd just go back to doing whatever. When I'd ask again, you could almost see him sigh and then grudgingly obey. This just wasn't going to work. He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes. I was a little too stern with him and he resented it, I could tell. The friction got so bad that I couldn't wait for the two weeks to be up, and when it was, I was in full-on search mode for my cell phone amid all of my unpacked stuff. I remembered leaving it on the stack of boxes for the guest room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, that the "damn dog probably hid it on me." Finally I found it, but before I could punch up the shelter's number, I also found his pad and other toys from the shelter...I tossed the pad in Reggie's direction and he snuffed it and wagged, some of the most enthusiasm I'd seen since bringing him home. But then I called, "Hey, Reggie, you like that? Come here and I'll give you a treat." Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction --- maybe "glared" is more accurate --- and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped down .... with his back to me. Well, that's not going to do it either, I thought. And I punched the shelter phone number. But I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that, too. "Okay, Reggie," I said out loud, "let's see if your previous owner has any advice." ____________ _________ _________ _________ To Whoever Gets My Dog: Well, I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner. I'm not even happy writing it. If you're reading this, it means I just got back from my last car ride with my Lab after dropping him off at the shelter. He knew something was different. I have packed up his pad and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip, but this time... it's like he knew something was wrong. And something is wrong...which is why I have to go to try to make it right. So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you. First, he loves tennis balls. The more the merrier. Sometimes I think he's part squirrel, the way he hordes them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there. Hasn't done it yet. Doesn't matter where you throw them, he'll bound after it, so be careful - really don't do it by any roads. I made that mistake once, and it almost cost him dearly. Next, commands. Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I'll go over them again: Reggie knows the obvious ones --- "sit," "stay," "come," "heel." He knows hand signals: "back" to turn around and go back when you put your hand straight up; and "over" if you put your hand out right or left. "Shake" for shaking water off, and "paw" for a high-five. He does "down" when he feels like lying down --- I bet you could work on that with him some more. He knows "ball" and "food" and "bone" and "treat" like nobody's business. I trained Reggie with small food treats. Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog. Feeding schedule: twice a day, once about seven in the morning, and again at six in the evening. Regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand. He's up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9th Street and update his info with yours; they'll make sure to send you reminders for when he's due. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car. I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet, but he knows. Finally, give him some time. I've never been married, so it's only been Reggie and me for his whole life He's gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he doesn't bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me most especially. Which means that this transition is going to be hard, with him going to live with someone new. And that's why I need to share one more bit of info with you.... His name's not Reggie. I don't know what made me do it, but when I dropped him off at the shelter, I told them his name was Reggie. He's a smart dog, he'll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. But I just couldn't bear to give them his real name. For me to do that, it seemed so final, that handing him over to the shelter was as good as me admitting that I'd never see him again. And if I end up coming back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it me and everything's fine. But if someone else is reading it, well ... well it means that his new owner should know his real name. It'll help you bond with him. Who knows, maybe you'll even notice a change in his demeanor if he's been giving you problems. His real name is "Tank". Because that is what I drive. Again, if you're reading this and you're from the area, maybe my name has been on the news. I told the shelter that they couldn't make "Reggie" available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. See, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could've left Tank with ... and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq , that they make one phone call.. the shelter ... in the "event" ... to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my colonel is a dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he'd do it personally. And if you're reading this, then he made good on his word. Well, this letter is getting downright depressing, even though, frankly, I'm just writing it for my dog. I couldn't imagine if I was writing it for a wife and kids and family ... but still, Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family. And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me. That unconditional love from a dog is what I take with me to Iraq as an inspiration to do something selfless, to protect innocent people from those who would do terrible things ... and to keep those terrible people from coming over here. If I have to give up Tank in order to do it, I am glad to have done so. He is my example of service and of love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades. All right, that's enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. I don't think I'll say another good-bye to Tank, though. I cried too much the first time. Maybe I'll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth. Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me. Sure I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had been at half-mast all summer. I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog. "Hey, Tank," I said quietly. The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright. "C'mere boy." He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months. "Tank," I whispered. His tail swished. I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him. "It's me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me." Tank reached up and licked my cheek. "So whatdaya say we play some ball?" His ears perked again.. "Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?" Tank tore from my hands and disappeared in the next room. And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth. If you can read this without getting a lump in your throat or a tear in your eye, don't send me anymore emails, you just ain't right.

    Help!

    Went to start the bike after more than a month off and the right overflow tube at the air filter box is pouring out gas ! I guess there must be a stuck float or needle in the right bank. Took the tank off and glanced at how to reach it and see no easy way without actually pulling the carbs! Sure would like to avoid that..... Does any one have any easier ideas?
  14. I am not a man who harbors a lot of unrealistic expectations; keeping it real just makes real contentment so much more likely. I am often pragmatic to a fault and will go with the flow when others might have made waves. Two weeks ago I found myself at a dealership looking at a 5 year old motorcycle that was really not the one I wanted; the one I was lusting after, but one that fit my needs AND my budget in a way that the one I really wanted won’t until after both my daughters are out of college. Beautiful, and powerful, and with only 5000 miles on the odometer obviously not much used. A small shallow scratch near the lock on the right saddle bag and a smallish dimple in her tank where someone dropped a cell phone were the only things that kept her from looking show-room new. And then there was the label. Right there on the tank where it had been carefully placed all those years ago before the first gas found her carbs. Honestly, I am not at all certain why it bothered me, but at a stop light on my test ride I found myself picking at the corners of it; which is probably not the best thing to be doing before one signs the papers. “Why would someone leave that label there?” I wondered “and how the heck am I going to get it off after all this time?” “Penny”, I named her right there in the show room because she shined like a new one; and for two weeks and over 1000 miles, some touring and some my normal commute, we have gotten to know each other. She is achingly pretty and oh so nice but not the one I thought I wanted and I fear that like two shy people completing a marriage arranged for them as children, we got off an awkward start. And then there was the label… staring at me every mile, reminding me to wear my helmet, picking at the corner of my vision. “Unclaimed”, I decided, the label makes her look unclaimed, as though the first guy who took her home from the dealer did not care enough about her to take the time to carefully peel it off and let her shiny black paint see the sun. For two weeks now, I have absentmindedly picked at it ,of course, and so it was worse than ever, dog eared and sticky. Until today, when after a couple of very nice rides together in the autumn sunshine I finally did battle with that label. After 5 or 6 years it was really not in any hurry to let go, it clung to her paint, just above her cute little dimple, for all that is was worth but I am a very patient man and so 4 fresh terry towels, a hair dryer, WD-40 and elbow grease eventually prevailed. As I took a fresh, clean, towel and removed the last vestiges of that label, it occurred to me that I have claimed her as my own and like that young “arranged” husband looking across the table at his new bride, I have realized that sometimes love does not come the way that we expect it to and that this thing, this shiny new thing devoid of that label, is just the thing I should have wanted all along.
  15. Have 2009 RSV with paint problems on the gas tank and fender. It is two toned red & black. It looks like you have rock chips in the paint, but paint was popping off from underneath on red only. Called Yahama to see if they were having a paint problem on the 09s of course they said no. They said to take it to the dealer that you bought it from. So I did. They said they would order me a new gas tank to replace the old one. Last Monday I got the new tank. Took them a day to get the new gas tank on. Now they have ordered the front fender. Don't know when it will get here. They didn't put the badges on the tank. I kind of like it without them. If you have any paint looking problems don't be surprised because it is popping off from underneath the paint. Especially on the newer bikes. Looked like it had the measels. LOL It looks good now.   17. I have been given some info on a 2005 Yamaha that they believe is a XV17AS Road Star Midnight. It has 2000 Kms on it (1250 miles), has been sitting for some time as the owner has been ill. The bike is all black with soft bags and a tank cover to match. Can anyone that knows a lot more about the second gen bikes than I tell me if $9,000 cdn is a good price for this. its only :mo money:
  18. Last weekend I had to pull my gas tank off, the first time I had done that. In the process I lost the two gray tabs that hold the rear fender in place not knowing they were there. Well, I found the tabs and am in the process of putting them back in but I'm not sure exactly where they are placed since I didn't remove them myself, they just fell out. I thought they would go in the little metal tabs welded on the back of the gas tank, but then they are too wide to go through the slots in the fender, so now I'm not sure how they go ?
  19. There just has to be an Award for Dumb,,,,,, Let me set this up a little. I just finished converting my 01 RSV to a Trike, and did a total repaint, which means that I had it down to the frame, and chassis for a month. OK did all of the thought needed maintenance including breaking the Oil Pan ( there has to be an Award for that too,, ) You know Plugs, filters air and fuel check wiring, and add wireing for things I added. Etc: Etc... I read the Tech info section or most of it, and have the manuals all downloaded ( great stuff here ) I noticed that the Ignition Switch connector has the dreaded HOT Spot on one wire. Checked it and re crimped it and put dilectric grease on it. Good to go..... Note here on the hot spot: Here in the Toolies I couldn't find a connector to replace it with, so fixed on it. But it is always in the back of my mind. We have been out on several trips 2- 300 miles here and there, and went camping last week end at one of the rallies that we normally attend.. All is well. Getting ready to head out to the Thunder in the Heart of Texas Rally this morning, and rid into town for gas, and work till 3 or so and hopefully head out. Get gas, and hop on to head on in to the computer shop, and What to my surprise,,,, Lights,Radio,every thing, but GoGo,,,Yepp ya got it Want do any thing......... OK I think Crap it happened to me this time, but better here in town than out on the road, but still 7 miles from home, and an easy way to work on it. OK I thinks,, maybe it will start if I get it going down the hill to the hi-way,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, NOPE ,,,,,NADA OK now I am in the middle of the road, and Zip I get a couple of guys to help me get the Trike to the side of the road, and I am thinking,,Ain't this the pits!!!! I have a trailer for just this situation for myself and others, BUT it is too narrow for the RSV Hannigan Trike,,,,, Double Crap!!! All right, I think I know what I need to do that will get me going and back to the house ( Maybe if I remember right from the articles ) Just pull the tank and jumper the connection that should do it.... just like adding the switch right,,, should work. Here I am on the side of the road with limited stock tool kit, and taking a fresh filled up full gas tank off..................... on the side of the road,,,,,, OK I have the seat, gas tank, a few bolts and stuff lying on the shoulder of the road, and a piece of wire trying to jumper the connection. Trying every combinatrion I can see ( both of them,, only two wires ) Nuttin still dead as a Stump.... and I am drawing a little of a crowd a couple of Goat Ropers, a truck driver, and a Sheriff . Now I am thinking I have to get it back to the shop some how. One of the guys there said he had a car hauler with a ramp and would go get it,,, Real nice of him, and headed off to get it. SAVED Sort of, but still stuck it want start still. I start putting it all back together to make it easier to load on a trailer, when he gets back. What a revolting development this is. I get it all back to gather, and as I was putting the rubber cover back on the tank tab on the right side I reached up to grab the handle bar to stand back up, and heard a CLICK!!!!!!! Yepp you guessed it.... I had hit the KILL Switch when I got on to leave the gas station by accident, and didn't know it............. An hour and a half taking it apart, and messing with this and that, and putting it back together ON the side of the road,,,,,,,,, and it was the darn Kill Switch... Where's my sign!!!!!!! Now can the kill switch be disabled so this can't happen again,,,, At least I know you can take a Venture apart on the side of the road... If you just have to...
  20. for those of you who use it you know those who don't shame on you . had a 81 honda cb 650 given to me had not been started in 3 yrs and was buried this year under the 24 inchs of snow we had and then all the snow from the st pieled on top of it .after cking all the wiring and for spark ( everything worked) cleaned gas tank carb floates where frozen fuel running every where . I filled fuel line going to carbs with the magic elixer let it sit over night and the next day filled tank with fuel and tried it . Started first try no float sticking . bike runs fine. now just clen up left. Seafoam does it again. Bill
  21. i have my 2007 venture black tank for anyone who wants it.....rt side has good size dent...tank has about 15,000 miles on it.....i need about $25 for shipping.....check ,cash...not setup for credit card or paypal.........first come.... (tried to place ad....never works)

And that is an understatement............Was leaving to go to church on my V Star 1300, I cleaned it up a little bit before I left, got ready for church, backed the bike out of the garage, closed and locked the garage door, got back onthe bike pulled in clutch, dropped into first, a faint pop the bike lurched and dies. Clutch cable broke at the adjustment fitting under the tank. This is the second cable that has broken, the first one broke in the same place at 12,000 miles and Yamaha warrantied it.........no 10,000 miles later it does it again. Okay no biggey, I get the Venture out and put the Star away. Venture needs gas, so I stop at a gas station I use very rarely on my way to church. Pump the gas while sitting on the bike holding it upright so I get a full tank..............got distracted for a moment and all of a sudden I feel wettnes and hear liquiid spilling on the ground.........the auto shout off didnt work as it should now I have gas all over the tank cover the engine but worst of all, I am soaked in gas and it feels like someone lit a fire to big Jim and the twins......:crying:.......OUCH Wipe all the gas off the bike and soak up the little inside the filler area, and it feels like a volcano has gone off in my nether reigons.................Its a five mile ride back to the house and I dont know if I can make it without stopping at the first pond I see and jump in..........Call the fire department....................PLEASE. Get home and cant get the clothes off fast enuff, jump into a cold shower and cool my guys off....................WHEW......AAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Luckily no permanet damage done to the area, but it sure felt like I was going to be out of commisson for a while.............Didnt really want to go to the hospital and be treated for burns down there.................. Made it to church 45 minutes late, went on our lunch ride and had a really nice day that I thought was going to be shot for me............. So. How was your day................??
  23. Ok, before I decided to fix my original tank, I took RandyR up on his offer to sell a gas tank to me. only caveat is that it is a black tank. I just set it on the frame and took some pics, I kind of like it. opinions anyone?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ solution B is that Jus Monkeying Around member was a big factor in fixing my original tank and that I should have it painted. He offered to pick up supplies and help me do the repair. Well at the Houston Maint Day, we did just that. We fixed the hole and another Hal is going to paint it. I will post that later as it comes along.
  24. I have an '09 Venture. Bought it 4 weeks ago with only 2500km on it and now have almost 4400km on it. I've been keeping track of mileage and it has been consistent. Question I have is how far can I go on a tank of gas ? What I'm finding is that : 1) low fuel light comes on about 255km (158.45 miles) - mix of city/highway driving (and I do like to take advantage of the revs on the engine !) 2) with fuel cock still "ON" I can go another 21km (12.8 miles) before the engine starts to sputter and stall 3) if I pull into a gas station immediately after switching to "RES" it only takes 16.433L (3.615 Imp gal, 4.341 US gal) to fill it up (fill so it just touches the bottom of the neck) From the specs on the bike, fuel tank capacity is 22.5L (4.95 Imp gal, 5.94 US gal) with a 3.5L (0.77 Imp gal, 0.92 US gal) reserve (I take it the fuel capacity includes the reserve). So... if the spec says 22.5L and I put 16.433L in to fill it up when I finally switch to reserve, does that mean that there really is a little over 6L of fuel still left ? I was on level ground and on the highway when the engine started sputtering and riding in a straight line. If the "Reserve" is 3.5L does that mean that 2.5L (15 % !!) in the main tank isn't available without sloshing the bike around to get it picked up? If that is the case, is 3.5L really available in the Reserve or is some not picked up as well? Working out the mileage.... I'm getting an average of 47.448 miles/Imp gal or 39.505 miles/US gal - 5.954L/100km Based on a 22.5L fuel capacity does that mean I can expect to go 378km (235 miles) if I run it totally dry ? I like the sounds of that on a touring bike ! (sorry for all the conversions but this is to a mixed measurement forum ! )
  25. the pics are not so good, but i hope you get the general idea. ok, so i go to the shop to prep my scooter to make texas maint day coming saturday. I pull off the cover and find a chip coming off the tank and a big stain on the paint. I check for leaking brake fluid, it's clean and dry - so ruled that out. I checked my cover and nothing there. I rub my finger over it and it smears a bit and smells like gas what the heck????? I think to myself. then it dawns on me - i knew from the purchase that the bike was a salvage title. the seller, of course, makes it sound like a fall over, then totaled by INS company. the leak has to be coming from the inside. oh, good grief charlie brown. what next. I drain the tank into a gas can, then i start by pulling away the chip to find body filler. the body filler is, of course, soft and easy to cut off. I find the hole that was ground, repaired, ground and then filled, smoothed and painted. now i have this mess to contend with because who ever did the repair, did not do it for longevity sake. that is my opinion cause it is now my mess. I don't do body work much less gas tank repair. I assume a repair is gonna b much cheaper than a replacement tank. Does anyone here do gas tank repair. Maybe I can get lucky and someone within driving distance ( 8 hours or so) does and wants to take my job after giving me a quote - so what do ya'll think
