  1. I bought an old 1988 Venture Royale 1300. Put a new battery in it and tried to start it. The instrument panel went through it's check and the only error I saw was a bicycle pump still on. I am sure that means the compressor is bad. I made sure the kill switch was not on and pressed the start button. No start, no sound, nothing. I do hear the fuel pump come on every time I turn the key on and it leaks like a shive from between the exhausts, but there is no solenoid clicking nor is there sound from cranking the starter. I will keep at this till I get done restoring it. Any help pointing me in the right direction, would be very much appreciated.
  2. So I sent my 02 to a local independent small shop to have him do my clutch. He calls me and says the starter now runs as soon as he turns on the key. I have never heard this before. The only "non stock" item on my bike is the Wallo Horn install. He said the ground wire is connected at the point where the horn is mounted. He forgot to connect it at first... went back and connected it now starter running. Ideas? Help please. Did he fry the starter some how?
  3. I have a 4 brush starter installed. It has been rebuilt once and during the last few months it would crank slow (cold or hot) and sometimes not at all (smoking ground wire at the battery). I took the bike to Auto Zone to check the battery. The battery and charging system were fine. As I pulled up to the store I noticed my headlight was out (Opt 7 HID conversion). Long story shot the ballast was bad and I had one from a car setup I bought by mistake. After this I had a good headlight and haven't had a starting issue since. So my question was a bad HID ballast causing my stater issues or should I still be looking at a starter issue?
  4. Sooooo. Decide to get me a bike... 1983XVZ12... without telling the wife... First problem I had was that it would not shift. Replaced the slave cylinder and all was well,,,, for 3 miles. Pulled it in to gas up and when I hit the start button, all it did was whine at me. Sounds like free spinning starter and every once in a while it will catch and turn the engine a half a second then go back to whining. The idea was to drive it home (currently in garage at work) and have my wife sit on it, give her some flowers and tell her she looks sexy and hope that will butter her up enough for her to not kill me. Kind of hard to do that when it won't start. Help please!
  5. The bike is 89 VR that was a complete running project (cosmetics). I would start it a couple of times a week and ride it a few blocks, then the starter died. I got a 4 brush form ebay and basically forgot about it and it sat since February. This past week I finally changed the starter and after having to break the gas cap to get good gas in it, I wanted to synch the carbs and they were really off. After a few days of that I went out today to try again and the starter would spin but no engine rotation. It never made noise like a starter clutch failure or sounded strange. So where do I start?
  6. What constitutes a 2nd. Gen starter...Is it a starter from a 1300cc bike or is it a starter from a 1999 and beyond? I guess my simplier question could have been what constitutes a 2nd Gen bike? Newbs gotta ask newb questions....
  7. Just bought a 1985 gold wing aspencade 1200 and I'm thinking I may need a new battery? There are times where it will turn over as if the battery has very little power left. Then there are times where it turns over like it's saying "oh this is nothing" doesn't matter if I'm starting it for the first time that day or from after riding awhile. We (father) and me checked the charging system and it is charging at about 13.8-14.4 @2800 cruising speed. My grandfather ADC recommended to put a extra ground cable on the starter to the block to help ground the starter. Is there anything else I should check?
  8. I fixed the starter clutch and started the bike with some difficult at half throttle so I put 6 ounce of redline in the tank. Now it will not start (hit) at all. Checked gas flow and it is working good and cleaned and checked firing of the plugs, Good. When I spray starter fluid in the carbs direct, it runs with the starter fluid and quits. I see no gas spray out of the carbs at all.
  9. Hello everyone and Happy New Year! My 06 RSTD Midnight has a delay or pause when I hit the starter switch. I turn on the ignition and wait for a a few seconds and then hit the start button. It starts and cranks real good but it takes a second or two before cranking. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced any thing like this and if they have come up with a remedy. I just get a creepy feeling that one day I will be unable to start at all. Thank you all in advance for your help. Bikerdude53
  10. On the way home from Daytona, the two red lights in the bottom corners started flickering. One is oil & the other is temp. They flicker at the same rate. When I turn the key on, every now and then the engine starts without the starter button being pressed and I have to rev it to get the starter to disingage. The lights flicker eradic and different brightness. They never blink unless in gear.A dealer service manager thought it might be a loose ground, but bumps don't effect the flickers. Some days this happens and some days it doesn't. I rode over a 1000 miles to get home and the engine is fine. I feel it may be a switch since I've proded, giggled, poked everything I can think of. I think it has to have the lights, starter and tranny in common. Any thing like this happen to anyone? Anyone have any ideas where to start? I'm afraid to get far from home. Thanks Richard
  11. i was checking out motorcycles on craigs list came accross a 1986 yamaha venture with a voyager kit. painted to match the bike. asking price 3 grand. has starter problems? bike will start but the starter hesitates? missing the yamaha piece that goes around the windshield? not a big problem. so i was thinking bike might need a starter clutch? so i shot him an offer of $2600. he sent me an email saying i must be nuts. the kit alone sells for $2500 or more alone? and at the price of $3000 he would be giving the bike away as it is. but needs to sell. sure hope it was noone here. if it is im sorry if i insulted you with my offer.
  12. Put a new starter (V-Max 1200 4 brush) on my 84VR. Using silicone as a gasket material on sidecover however when I tighten the sidecover the starter drags really bad to where the wires want to get hot. It seems when I tighten the top screws on the left it starts to drag. Any ides?
  13. I'm so sick of being stumped on this 1st Gen I'm going to start arguing in favor of the 2nd Gens. Here's what happened this time. Bike had been sitting for a few months. Went down to crank it . It started without too much difficulty but I noticed the headlight wasn't burning. So I read through a few post and got a clue to check start button switch. So i did and noticed while cranked the light would come on if I wiggled the start button. Took the switch apart, cleaned it, put it back together. Cranked fine and light worked fine just like it was supposed to. I'm thinking problem solved and move on to something else. Reinstalling radio that has been disconnected for a while. So when I get the radio installed and begin to put it back together I turned the key and hit the start switch. The lights come on fine but now no engine start. nothing no click no starter spin nothing but the headlight lighting.:bang head: Nothing that I had done since last starting the bike should have effected the starter switch. But now with the key on and shorting the starter relay out it will crank and run but not by using the starter switch. What could have possibly happened?
  14. Greetings all! My name is Jason... most folks call me "Ghostman." What a great forum and group of enthusiasts you all are! I ride with another member here named Bobby G in STAR Touring chapter #352 So about 2.5 weeks ago I ran across this absolutely sexy old 1983 Venture Royale. Odometer says 47k miles and she appears to have been kept inside for most of her life. I didn't see any leaks beneath her and she started slow but seems to run strong. Seller has the bike on consignment from the owner and it had been sitting for a few months at this point... On the 30 mile ride home we stopped for gas... she started a little slower... stopped for cracker barrel and she started slow again. I figure she needs a new battery since she was sitting for a while. Common stuff right? I fell in love on the highway ride home... what huge difference over my Vstar 1100 and Virago 250 commuter. My tailbone just doesn't like the cruiser seating style... although the Airhawk R cushion helps. After the 5 hour ride to Mrytle Beach for bike week... I was set on more comfortable long distance option than the vstar 1100. Made it home and poked on her for a few then took my gal out to feel how comfy the VR was on the road... start was slower now. Also she had stalled as I arrived home. After a few miles we stopped for drinks at a convenient store then it happened... waaa waaa waaa click. Employee tried to jump us off and no dice. Figuring the battery was needing replacement we goofed around for a while as advance charged up a new battery... walk back and get waa waaa waaa... no start. hmmmm... used a jump box... no start. Frustrated my gal and I push start the big beast and get her going so I can get us the 3 miles home. On the ride back she doesn't stall (new batt) and gets us back. I turn it off and a few minutes later I try to start her up... waaa waaa waaa click. hmmm... Well after doing gobs of research here... I poke around a little and decide to replaced the greasy black starter with a 2nd gen starter for a 99 RSV. Figuring if I was going that deep I wanted the 4 brush starter lol. While installing the starter I discover a 4 gauge battery cable has been installed already! This starter problem has been happening before I bought it and the PO was trying to fix it with tips from HERE! This also means that the slow starter has been taking its toll on the starter clutch too huh? Figuring I will upgrade that with Danos deal later in the year so It doesn't give me trouble later on. The only oring I didn't have on hand was for that bypass fitting at the bottom of the silly tstat housing. It is still currently giving me a mild drip that I am going to have to return to... After topping up the new battery she starts strong and the starter spins fast as crap! Woohoo! Although she sure doesn't like it if that battery is slightly low huh? So as I have things torn apart I start noticing a bunch of things different... seems someone had been actively upgrading this old blonde bombshell. Here is what I found stainless steel brake lines front and rear including front discs tied together rather than linked. LEDs in almost every light 4ga battery cable upgrade wolo horn... unworking (trouble shoot that later) upgraded Hella headlight kit Well as of yesterday she started and idled great... took her out for a run to shake her down. Suddenly the tach drops to zero and it feels like it is running on two cylinders! Up and down... she willl run strong for a few and then the tach drops to nothing again. After a nervous ride home going from to sluggish to suddenly rip your arms off when it catches... I grab the Ipad and head back HERE. From my searching it sounds like the heavy rain a few days back ( while she was uncovered) may have gotten some moisture in my TCI or related connections. So after I check the coil wire connection going to #2 I will tear into it and see what it up with that old TCI and its connectors. Who knows it may have dried out by today and run fine... lol. Not sure I can relocate my TCI though as my headlight ballast seems to have been mounted on top of the air box. We shall see shortly when I throw a leg over... I aim to run seafoam through her this week to help clear out some gunk from sitting... but all in all... for the $1500 I paid for her I don't mind fixing some age related issues! I will continue tuning her up with plugs, wires, check carbs diaphragms, synch carbs etc.... Once I get her wrinkles ironed out I am sure I will be happy camper and put many many more miles on her. Such a comfortable and strong ride... I have paid my $12 today because this site is extremely useful and a store house of knowledge... You all rock! So after some diligent searching I have been able to start troubleshooting this old girl and fixing her up... Thanks to all who have contributed to this forum in the past. Your past contributions continue to help us VR newbs with knowledge we need to keep these MKIs on the road... Now... time for pics yes??? She is quit the sexy old girl and seems to have been fairly well maintained... not to mention it looks like she has almost every piece of chrome available at the time. Love the chrome! lol Well that's my story and now time to see how she rides to day... Ghostman
  15. Had my 06 fairing laid forward for shock maintenance. When finished I tried to hook the battery back up. The + lead sparked even with the key off and it made a noise like a starter solenoid when the battery is low. Bike won't start and the battery goes dead in a short time. Again this happens with the key off...any ideas?
  16. I have been trying to help a friend that has had a starter problem and up to now, it has been related to blowing the starter solenoid like the engine is locked up like hydrolock. This is a 96 1500. Well, now it is worse. We pulled starter earlier and cleaned it and he just finished a 3,400 mile trip. He was at the Harley drags as part of CMA support and when he tried to start his bike it made a loud crunch and now the starter freewheels. I pulled the starter out and as you can see from the gears, it don't look so good. Anybody have any suggestions? This can be mover to the Goldwing section after it has been seen. RandyA
  17. when I push the start button down the lights draw down and it blows the ignition fuse . The main wire going to ignition switch on side of bike gets very hot when key in on position. Any ideas ? I have replace the starter relay and the starter cut out relay Please help...
  18. Sometimes, and increasing in frequency, when I try to start my 06 RSv it sounds like my Battery is dead. It trys to turn over and can't,try again same ,after a few try's it starts to turn over, buy sounds slow, but it eventually it starts. At my last fuel stop I checked the battery before I tried to start it, 12.6 volts, but I had to hit the starter button 4 or 5 times. I had the napa store check my battery last week, they said it was fine. Any ideas? Thanks George
  19. Ever have a starter just get really weak? Like too weak to turn the engine over? Working on my 83 which I personnally have never heard run. Acts like a really weak battery but I charge the battery AND add a fully charged jump box on it and still, the solenoid clicks but the starter does nothing. Occasionally it will drag the motor over really really slow about half a turn then stop. I upgraded to 4 gauge cables when I put it back together after the trans upgrade. I pulled the starter off and laying in the floor it spins great. No indications of an issue at all. Back on the bike and stick the jump box directly on the starter and it still does the same thing. Oh and I did the internal ground mod while I had the starter off, still no difference. The motor turns free by hand, no issue. The starter reduction gears are in there correct and not binding. It just acts like the starter don't have enough power to do the job. I've narrowed down everything I know to do and it seems to me like it's simply a weak starter. I know the newer 4 brush starters are the way to go, but I thought I'd run this by the guru's and see if I may be missing something.
  20. Sooo New guy here trying to remove the starter clutch so i can send to Dano. I got the covers off no problem. How do you lock up the rotor to get the bolt out and do you have to take the gear loose before you pull the rotor? Thanks Kevin:confused24:
  21. So with the new HO Stator, starter clutch, and programmable TCI installed I can't get the bike cranked. After 3 cans of starter fluid the bike will fire only as long as the starter fluid is present but then chokes out. The fuel pumps seems to click for long time every time I turn the key on. And the battery drains down to nothing quickly and I've had it on the charger all day. When the charger indicates charged it has 13.5 volts but doesn't last long. The bikes been sitting for about a year. I'm thinking I'll probably have to pull the carbs and go through them again. But, I thought I'd get some more opinions before I did that.
  22. I'm new to the Venture world and will be installing a 1300 transmission in my 83 to fix and upgrade the 2nd gear issue. I figure since I'll be there anyway, this may be the perfect time to upgrade the starter as well, along with starter cables. I'd like to go to the newer 4 brush starter if I can get one cheap enough. Been looking at them on ebay it seems very doable. From what I've read, it sounds like any 2nd generation or newer will work, so this means anything Yamaha Venture from 93-2012 will fit. Am I right?
  23. I just put in new plugs, fuel filter, adjusted the carbs and took her out for a couple of long runs 120+ miles both times. Everything was just fine including turning her off and restarting. The rains came and she sat for a week. When I went out to go for another trip I hit the starter the entire bike went dead. I turned the key off waited a minute and turned it back on and all the lights etc. come on just like she's ready to start , but she won't start. I get a click coming from what sounds like under the bike on the right side. If it was a car I'd think the starter was out, but before I start taking off/replacing parts...Anybody have any ideas or suggestions what it might be or where I might start looking? Thanks George
  24. I did the ground wire mod on an 86 starter that I had after my original was dragging a little. It seemed to really help the starter and it cranks over good. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up an 09 RSV starter and as I understand it, it should be a 4 brush starter. It came off a bike with 40K miles and looks very clean. I was the only bidder on ebay and got it for $29.95 plus about $13 shipping from Pinwall. I am getting ready to remove the exhaust collector on the bike and replace it with one that I cut open and repaired that rattled before. I was thinking about putting the 09 starter on the bike since I was going to have the exhaust headers off on the front. My question is; does the newer 4 brush starter also need the ground wire mod or should it be ok the way it is? RandyA
  25. I have a new to me 1983 venture that i just got running after a complete carborator cleaning. Now the starter seams like there is not enough power in the battery to turn it over, but this is the same battery that i use on my other 1983 venture and it starts it fine. It almost seams as if it might be something in the starter, not sure if brushes would cause this kind of problem. I also have a high amp batter charger with a start option, that i tried, but it still cranked very slow then it will start. Does anyone have any ideas where i should start. Thanks Dave
