  1. The wife of a fellow VentureRider (johnny-canuck) took this picture of me on a ride last weekend. I thought it was pretty good. Ross
  2. KromeRose couldn't wait to give me my Fathers Day gift first thing this morning. I loved it. Then she gave me this, it's a FrogSkin for my kick stand. I think it looks pretty darn good, and I love it too. Thanks Honey. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/SaltyDawg83/beec1180.jpg http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/SaltyDawg83/d186ce3f.jpg
  3. Howdy folks! Don't know if it's been my usual "every 6 months" or not but here goes. I'll keep it short this time. Still truckin' but haven't gone back to work yet. They have a couple jobs running in Bismarck and in Poplar, MT but it's flippin back & forth between the two. They bid on a job in April for Max, ND that will run the rest of the season. They've started the pipe work and when they're pretty much done with that they'll bring the side-dumps up so off to work I go when that happens. For those of you that know me you've seen me limping around here & there for about 5yrs now. I fell on my right knee in the winter of 2003 and just never did anything about it, couldn't afford to take time off of work. So I've babied it, relying on my left knee to carry the load (and yes, the load could use a lil work but that's another story!) and as of last Friday, an MRI revealed that the cartilage is about gone. Since this WAS my good knee I'm sure the right knee has gone to s^*t as well. Again, not being able to afford missing work I won't be doing anything about it really until I get laid off this winter. So I'll keep on limping my way around. At PiP, just give ol' gimpy some room and don't be in a hurry if you're waitin on me, it'll take me awhile! Crow & I are doin' pretty good. He's still working at the greenhouse in town here. He does most of the physical work there and it's starting to show on him too. Damn aging, it sucks! Kids are doing fine as well as the grandkids. My son never made it to Afghanistan. They want him to spend some time as the reservist he signed up to be before they'll let him go active. I'll leave it at that.................lol. So other than the knee thing, everything is going pretty well. Haven't ridden the scoot yet this year, just too painful. She started right up this Spring so that's a good thing. Can't wait til Sept to see some of you folks. Gary/Annie......... here chicky chicky! Red....... bring some plugs, you'll be okay! Steve........... did we decide on fried chicken or grilled hon? (LMAO) Ya'll take care & be safe! Brandi
  4. Well its been 2 weeks since surgery. Went to doc yesterday and got those 23 stinking staples out:rotf: Boy did that make a difference in the surface pain. Have been doing 6 exercises a day and was up to 20 reps each. Doc says 3 more weeks of no wieght bearing on left side. He took xrays and all looks very good. Said what he did should last 30 yrs and that I had very strong and solid bone. Theripist came today and added 3 more exercises:crying: she tried to make me touch the ceiling with my toes or at least it felt that way:crying: leg lifts are the killer. But to be honest the pain is minimal. My hip seemed to hurt alot more before surgery. But could be the pain meds keeping it in check. They took me off the oxycodone and put me on hydrocodone which isnt as strong and I have noticed no difference. Im feeling pretty good just a little cabin fever is all. Should be moving around pretty good by the time the rally starts:banana: John
  5. I get sporadic radio and CB usage that floats in and out. I also suspect that I'm not getting much range on my CB transmission and radio reception. I'm pretty sure it is the antenna cable/duplexer. does anyone have a good extra one for sale or trade.
  6. On my recent ride to the Grand Canyon, we ran across a couple towing a trailer behind their Harley. The trailer and saddlebags were covered with stickers of places they'd been on the bike. Key West, Alaska, Sturgis, national parks, even Europe. It was pretty impressive. Has anyone done this? What do you do when you want to sell your bike? How do you keep them pretty? Dave
  7. Got her out a little this evening. Finished blowing bottom out of exhaust chamber!! Make as much noise as my neighbor's Hardley. But she is running and going down the road without any problems. Little shake if you turn loose of the bars at 50 mph. Probally that Brickstone on the front. Patched that exhaust chamber and those Jardines really sounded sweet for about 15 miles. Then POW!!! Not ment for me to own a pretty (no scratches) or a quiet bike. But 2nd gear will crank out 70 mph pretty quick. I'll shut up now. Still pretty pumped. Only got in about 40 miles. Maybe a night ride??
  8. i see there is lots of problems with 2nd gear but the one i just picked up says on the dash its in 1st gear and it really is pretty happy to be stuck in that gear. Has anyone ran into this before?
  9. I couldn't srtand my seat on a 400 mile weekend.. I'm STILL sore today. SO, I did something about it... I marked the seat, carved it out like a bread soup bowl, and added a hard foam to it. It's a Coleman sleeping bag pad. Very dense solid stuff.. You can't really tell from the pictures, but I dished it out pretty deep. In the very rear of the seat, I took out all but about an inch of foam. I built that part up about 4". I also took some off the sides in the front so I don't feel like I"m sitting on top of a 55 gallon barrel every time I put my feet down. That made a pretty big difference too. Carved out the space, cut out pieces and built them up, using spray adhesive made for foam, then carved them down with an electric knife, then finish shaped it with a 4" grinder. I put two pieces of foam in the back, and 4 in in the seat. Just got back from a test ride and WOW!!! MUCH BETTER. My hips feel like they are supported, and my tailbone doesn't have all my weight on it. The seat looks all original still. The cover went back on perfect with all the pleats. I still need to take it back apart though. I left a little bit of too high a spot in the very middle of the seat, and I need to take that down. No big deal. Just another hour or so of work. It feals very nice and solid like my corbin does. Not all mushy like before. I LIKE it.. Here's a few pictures... The first is the seat after cutting it out, then one of how I made a pattern for the foam, another inserting the foam, and one with it buit up before shaping.
  10. My front left/back brake was locking up after about 25 miles of riding. This morning I decided to do cowpuc's brake master cleaning. Everything went pretty good till I checked the reservoir level. Popped out the filler bolt and all I see is the rubber diaphragm. Don't see any fluid at all. I just picked up this bike (86) and would really like to get this fixed. Will I need to remove the reservoir completely and if so how bad is that job? It looks pretty tight just to get the top cover off. Thanks
  11. Clutchless shifting that is. Once I get up to 3rd gear, alot of times I am guilty of shifting to 4th and 5th without the clutch. I let of the gas of course, but does it do any damage. It's pretty smooth. Just wondering if I am the only one?
  12. Can someone please explain how to lube the control cables on a 2008 venture? I bought a repaid manual, but it does not explain this. I am sure it must be pretty simple.
  13. I can't tell,,,,,, but somebody had better pretty soon,,,, or I'll have to let it all hang out. All I can say is that someone will be celebrating.
  14. Football practice started this weekend. 4 hours on Saturday, 3 hours on Sunday. I am fat and out of shape, but I think I will be alright. About 1/2 hour into Saturday my body finally realized I was serious and started to loosen up. I made it through the four hours of practice in pretty good form. I really felt it saturday night though, I laid on the couch and about died. Yesterday was much better, it was fun to line up and hit people. We weren't wearing pads yet, but we probably should have. I just about broke the defensive tackle's nose on one play. I am pretty confident I will be playing first string center. I am the biggest guy and I can long snap. The entire offensive line is 300lbs plus. I was smarter yesterday too, I didn't go home and lay on the couch. I tried to keep moving all day, which kept my muscles loose and prevented me from building up a bunch of lactic acid and freezing up all together. I was pretty stiff this morning, but I was surprised that I woke up well before my alarm went off. I actually slept pretty good. The pain is ok, the more I endure now, the more I get to deliver later The quarterback is decent. The defensive line is all 275lb +. I hope to play some d-line too. The defensive and offensive backs are average size. Everyone seems to want to be there, and we had some good intensity. We may even win a few games this year. if you want to know more, check out : www.dbqbruisers.com
  15. Okay, first off, I did a search on this topic and haven't found a single thread about alarms. Nothing under 'alarms', 'anti theft' or 'security devices' so if I've erred, sue me! Now that we got that out of the way.......... Living in a so-so neighbourhood, with a one car garage/one truck driveway, I pretty well need to leave my bike outside at the front of the house cause the missus just doesn't have the strength to move it around when she leaves for work. Since I don't have any neighbours with Harley's to park next to (think about it! *L*), I have to leave my ride out there sitting all alone when I'm off to work. Soooooo.....I've been researching a few alarms for the bike and wonder if anyone out there could offer me some advice. The one I'm leaning towards is the Scorpio Alarm SR-i600 FM 2-Way Paging Security System with Anti-Hijack, Perimeter Sensor, Battery Back-up (and more) from cruisercustomizing.com. Anyone familiar with this alarm? It gets some pretty good reviews. Got some better suggestions? Thanks again in advance...... Bluez
  16. Any one heard or is using this technology? [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GScWPb8qcng&NR=1]YouTube - Crazy motorcycle tires[/ame] Looks pretty good stuff.
  17. Is there any difference between the carbs from an 83 and an 84? I've been wanting to rebuild my carbs on my 84 to try and get my mileage back into the high 30's and low 40's. Right now it's in the low to mid 30's. I have a set of carbs from an 83 that I started pulling apart the other day. They were pretty nasty looking inside the bowls. The floats looked pretty good and the diaphrams have holes in them. I'm gonna weight the floats in a few minutes to see how close they are to each other. I have a scale that goes 3 or 4 decimal places that should work good.
  18. Just got some new end caps that go on the end of handelbars and for the life of me can't figure out how to change them. P O scuffed up the right on pretty good and the new ones are nice and shiny. Anyone able to give me some insight on changing these buggers out?

    Pretty amazing

Although not Venture related, still pretty amazing - IMHO - that someone has gone 1 million miles on the same bike: http://sev.prnewswire.com/auto/20090325/CG8923425032009-1.html Cheers,
  20. has anybody seen or hear of these pipes? they look pretty good, wonder how they sound?http://motors.shop.ebay.com/merchant/allproparts2_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZ
  21. OK, so the title is a little misleading.........Had my knee surgery on Wed the 25th. They found a slightly torn meniscus, loads of arthritis and two nice bone fragments floating around in there, occasionally sliding up under my knee cap and causing all sorts of mischief. Well, theyre out, the tear is repaired and I took my first big move today by making it up the stairs to my bedroom all by myself. Im finally getting mobility back in the knee again. Guess those bone fragments locked things up pretty well when they wanted to. One fragment was the size of a fingernail. Only had to take Oxycodone for 3 days. Still have about 85 left..........Should be a heck of a lot more comfy on the bike now. Love my new walker too...........
  22. well:looks like a ride to denver is in order, gary howard is going with me,should be on the road,03 05 09,no routes just head that way, weather looks pretty good, hope I70 to glenwood spring is clear, will check ,when i get to denver a M & G would be great sume wear along the way
  23. OK folks...a while back...I ran across this hat/lapel pin on Ebay. I thought that it might make a nice prize for a little contest here so I started bidding and ended up with it. Now I assume that this is pretty rare because I've seen a few first gen pins but never one like this. It says "South Daytona" "Lions" on it and then "Bike Week 1992" at the bottom. Now the cool thing is that I bought it from a seller in Germany so this pin has seen more traveling that a lot of actual riders. Anyway, it's in great shape. I didn't put a ruler next to it but it's a pretty good sized pin...probably 2 1/2" across. I'm going to make this contest very easy to enter. All you have to do is post to this thread about your first introduction to the Yamaha Venture motorcycle. Whether it was a first gen, second gen...heck even a Royal Star...tell us about it. Was in an '83 that you never owned but always wanted or a new '99 RSV? Now if you don't WANT the pin....enter anyway. I'm sure you can find somebody that would love to have it. The winner will be chosen by random selection from all entries one week from today.
  24. I don't think that this will affect many of us but we do have some corporate types here so it never hurts to put it out there. Eck sent this to me and it sounds like a pretty bad one. http://www.dailytech.com/New+Rampant+Windows+Worm+Seizes+8+Million+Business+PCs+in+a+Week/article13981.htm
  25. Just saw the movie this evening and thought it was a classic Eastwood movie. I thought it was a pretty good. RandyA
