  1. I recently just purchased a 2008 Rstd that was brand new left over with no miles on it. I drove it back from Arkansas to ohio which was about 800 miles and dumped the oil and put Aims oil in it. Immediately i noticed i tick noise when the motor was cold and when it warmed it didnt notice it as much. So took it to a local Yamaha dealer and he heard it as well and notified his rep. and they answered him that the covers around the motor enhance the motor noise sound. They took notice and wrote it down as a complaint of mine but thats as far as i got. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do beyond this? I know that manual says 26,000 miles valve adjustment is needed but i dont want to pay for an adjustment if i have too? any suggestions or thoughts about this?

    twitter

This may not get much interest, but with all the computer and techies we have...you never know. Thought I'd post a notice that I'm on twitter, in case anyone wants to 'follow' me... Anyone else tryin it out?
  3. Just ordered another Dunlop whitewall for the rear and I'm going to be brave enough to change it out myself (with the help of you guys). I have looked in the Tech talk but maybe there is something somewhere that gives me more info. I notice you also say to grease the splines, etc so I'm adding that to the list. Looking for feedback..........thanks fellows.
  4. Just got my Motorcycle Cruiser Mag. Looks like they want to survive after all! They dumped Billy boy Bartells as editor....I wonder what took them that long, that rude little creep alienated a lot of subscribers I would suspect.....Too late for me though, I won't be renewing. I notice all that male potency and enlargement advertising has disappeared with him as well!!! Good going, even if too late.:clap2:
  5. No pics needed, just a little imagination. Go to dealer for 64k service. Through telepathy, tell tech to half a$$ put the seat bolts back on. Get on bike ready to leave and notice something "weird" with the seat. Pull up on it a couple times and it is on there. Figure they must have missed the little tab in the back and think it's no biggie, will fix when you get home. Get home only to be able to pull the seat completely off as there are no bolts holding the seat down. Also notice that a couple accessories aren't attached to the fuse block like the Stebel horn (2 for 2 w/ this service shop). Get mad, say a few cuss words, go inside, eat supper, play with kids, get them ready to bed, post about your new quick release seat mod and you are done.

  7. So my CC started acting up on me. It wouldn't stay engaged when I set it. Figuring it was one of the Micro-switches I started trouble shooting the problem. What I found was that the clutch lever wasn't returning to the completely out position. So when I pushed the lever out and held it there the CC would engage. As soon as I stopped pushing out on it the darn thing would shut off. Figured the lever was loose. Well not exactly, the darn thing has to be able to move so tightening it was out of the question. Took it apart and found the bushing inside the lever that the pushrod goes into was worn out, and I do mean OUT. I tried to rig it and that didn't work so I ended up ordering a new bushing and paying more to get it shipped to me than it cost. Put the new bushing in and CC works great now. I posted this for two reasons, the first being that someone else may have the same problem or experience the same thing in the future. And B as this was going bad I was noticing some slipping in the clutch under hard acceleration. I always suspected it was something to do with the lever and it was. The bottom of the bushing was angled from wear. When the bushing wore through it also wallered out the hole in the bushing which allowed the bushing to drop and bind where the bushing goes into the lever mount. This in turn was not allowing the clutch to come completely out (without pushing the lever out) and was staying engaged ever so slightly. Whenever I would push the lever all the way out and get on it hard the clutch never slipped, but after shifting into a gear and just releasing the clutch normally I would get a slip about 25% of the time. Sooo with that being said, some folks may have a simple $4.00 problem that could be causing their clutch to slip. Notice the hole completely through the old bushing. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/SaltyDawg83/93116452.jpg This is what the backside looked like. Notice no hole in the new bushing :-0 http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/SaltyDawg83/b7af276d.jpg Notice the perfectly round shape of the old bushing. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/SaltyDawg83/6c6142e9.jpg

  10. In May of 1999, I bought my brand new Royal Star Venture. I put about 35,000 miles on it pretty quickly but then about 6 or 7 years ago, ran across another '99 model down in Southern Ohio that only had 5,000 miles on it. The price was about the same as I knew I could sell mine for so I bought it, moved all my accessories and etc. over to the new one and then sold my original on Ebay. The new one was the same color and etc. so it was like I hadn't even changed bikes except for the mileage. So this weekend I was looking through some papers and came upon the title for my bike. You can imagine how surprised I was to notice that I had never transferred it into my name. It was one of those things where I thought my wife and done it and she assumed that I had done it and it just didn't get done. I still received my registration notice every year from the previous '99 so I always just renewed the plates and kept on going. The problem was, the plates were actually assigned to the VIN number of the old bike. I guess I've been lucky because I've never been stopped so there has been no reason for them to run the VIN number against the plates. I DID change the insurance when I traded so my insurance was on the correct bike. So, yesterday morning I stopped by the BMV and finally transferred the title to my name. So, I guess I FINALLY own the bike that I've been riding for 6 or 7 years.

  12. Finally got the prototype detachable tour pak bracket back from the water jet shop (thought it was going to be laser cut). i'm attaching some pics. keep in mind that this material is only .060 thick and the final product will be .125 (i.e. 1/8"). there are several changes to be made, one is more radiusing on several areas, another is removing some additional material from the sides, and possibly utilizing gussets if necessary. you will notice that the front of the bracket uses the stock front mount for the stock backrest, you will also notice the back of the bracket uses additional docking hardware with locking mechanisms. the tour pak in the pic is one i purchased for approx. $110.00 (plus shipping), it is ABS plastic and actually has lines on the top of pak which mimics the gas tank lines. we will be repainting the tour pak (getting rid of that silly yellow dot on the top of tour pak) and will also be painting the bracket to match the bike. feedback would be appreciated, thanks. and keep Freebird in your prayers and pay your subscription today (additional donation would be awesome)!! http://i42.tinypic.com/359flnm.jpg http://i44.tinypic.com/x391dg.jpg http://i42.tinypic.com/fn5j43.jpg http://i43.tinypic.com/2iqho42.jpg http://i42.tinypic.com/aamg.jpg http://i41.tinypic.com/zss36x.jpg

  14. This is a must see to believe it. The biker in the Red shirt is Mark Joseph, who runs the Gipson Tire Store in Millbrook. His buddy was in a pickup behind him filming the whole thing. This repeats 3 or 4 times, with each showing going a little bit slower, so you can really see what happened. Notice the biker coming at you duck. This footage was taken on the Needles Hwy near Sturgis. This all happened in less than two seconds
  15. OK folks...I just upgraded our software here. There may be some minor issues so let me know if you notice anything stranger than usual. Thanks
  16. I know this is short notice, but the little lady and I are leaving Dallas for a place just south of Branson, Mo. tomorrow (Friday) morning. We are vacationing for the next week and wondered if anyone local to that area would like to get together. We will be in Ridgedale Friday thru Thursday then heading to E.S. to hook up with the gang there. Weather looks like it is clearing up there, so some good riding and eating may come into play.
  17. While working on the bike the other day, I noticed that the reubber manifolds from the carbs and showing some signs of cracking. Bike is an 01 and has 55k on her. Is this comon? I don't notice any problems, have some slight backfiring, (have not plugged AIS yet). but the bike getrs consistant mileage, 35+. Is it expensive/difficult to replace the manifolds?
  18. I just purchased a 1988 venture that is in good shape and only has 42K miles on the speedo. I have been browsing this site with great interest picking up as many tips and info as I can find. I do have a few questions, I just checked my gas mileage and I am getting 28 mpg. Is this normal for back road riding where I am running in the 2500-3500 RPM range? I have not been " jumping " on the throttle as I am still getting used to this style of bike. This is a big adjustment from the sport bikes! I also notice a slight " wobble" from the front end when making a slow sharp turn. Is this something the aftermarket fork brace will handle? If so anyone have one for sale? I have the factory service manual for this bike and it calls for 20-40 oil. I am going to change the oil in the near future any recomended oil brand to use? I do notice a bit of noise from the tranny gears when sitting at an idle, Is this normal as well? I am thinking a synthetic oil might be a good choice, your comments? Sorry for all the questions but like I said this is a new style bike for me that is very different from all my previous rides. I really enjoy taking this bike out for a cruise as it is so comfortable and I do get many " what kind of bike is that? questions. Any information that you can provide me with would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Scott
  19. So, we were out riding yesterday, me on my Midnight and my wife on her Honda Reflex. She's been riding on public roads since last Tuesday after three sessions in a church parking lot, so she's very new to the whole thing. When we were approaching the end of a two-lane stretch, I pulled into the left lane to give her some protection from traffic coming from behind when I notice an SUV coming up at speed on the inside. We are already in the area where the center dotted line has gone and the road is narrowing. I speed up a little and ease to the middle of the road, again to protect my wife ahead and indicate to the SUV that there's no room for her to undertake and, guess what? She does it anyway! As she passes I notice it's a middle-aged woman of the "trophy wife" type, with a yappy dog on her lap. Not immediately sure if she completed the trifecta with a cellphone or not, but it's possible. She then proceeds to ride my wife's tail for about a mile, overtakes her in a turning lane then makes a right turn. It was then that the Sheriff's patrol car comes flying by with blues and twos going full pelt! I signaled to turn and we ended up in a church parking lot and the deputy was giving the SUV driver a lecture on how not to drive, especially when motorcycles are involved! It's the first time in 30+ years of driving that a cop has been in the right place at the right time!! She got off with a warning, but I wonder if people like this EVER thing of the stupidity of their actions and the fact that if there's a wreck, they'd be inconvenienced by a few days of collision repair while the motorcyclist will be either in the hospital or in the morgue, just because they had to get one car's length ahead!
  20. OK AL WHEN IS THE CASINO RIDE FOR FALL THIS YEAR GONNA BE? HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET IT IN THIS YEAR WITH GOOD WEATHER. NEED ADVANCE NOTICE SO WE CAN MAKE PLANS WITH WORK. JOE
  21. I am looking to rebuild my braking system on my Venture and have a question on the caliper seals for the front brakes. The microfiche shows two different calipers seal kits for the front calipers. Part numbers 1KT-W0047-00-00 and 1NL-W0047-00-00. I did notice there is also two different part numbers for the piston so I am guessing that the pistons are different sizes and that is why there are two different seal kits. Is this correct? Thanks Rick Fink

    Speedo Malfunction?

My '08 Venture Speedometer kinda "flicks" from one speed reading up to the next, as in "jumpy". Is this normal? I'm used to them working in a smooth manner up and down the indicated speed. I only notice it on acceleration.
  24. Can anyone comment on the Muzzys 6 blade aluminum fan. I notice one available on Ebay right now..and I checked out their website too (same price as Ebay item). I have a 1988 Venture Royale....and notice on hotter days with 'low' or little airflow engine temp runs high. I know they are 'known' for this. Would this fan provide better cooling/cool down? What about fan noise? I appreciate any comments or experience with this item. Thanks. rez
  25. I am new to the v4. bought a 1987 VR a short time back. It makes like a squeak. When I bought it the dealer said is was the venture wine. I have riden it just about 3500 miles and no problem, the noise hasn't changed. This chirp is like three rapid chirps, a slight pause and starts back over. You don't notice it after the rpm come up some or while you are riding, but at a idle, it is rather loud. Is this the chirp that is talked about or is there something else I need to be worried about?
