  1. Hola, I ride a 2008 RSTD it has between 11 and 12k on it. The only thing I have done is replace the stock air filters with K&N's. I hit reserve at about 140. I figured my gas milage on 135 leaving a bit of fudge room incase I need a gas station. I figured I am getting 32.5 mpg. I am doing a 4K roung trip this summer and trying to figure costs. I ride 80 miles a day round trip to work and 98% of the ride is highway miles. Anyone getting better mileage and if so what have you done to increase it of have you done anything? Thanks In advance SJ
  2. My yamaha shop is telling me they are charging me for the regreasing. isn't this warranty work? The neck was never done. 44,000 miles on her. the bike is a 07 venture
  3. But where are yall able to run 85 mph, around here if you break 80 on the interstate a set of blue lights come on behind you. They are really getting strict in south ga north Fla. We went to Panama City Beach last week and it seemed that every few miles LEA had someone pulled over. I been driving close to the speed limit myself, never over 75 on the interstate. In the 20 miles of interstate on the way to work today I saw five traffic stops. Guess revenue is falling short. Gregg
  4. Just doing a little maintenance on my son's, new to him, bike. Picked up a free 2007 Vulcan 900 Custom with 3200 miles. Swapped out the frame and going back together. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n315/rlyons_photos/Vulcan/Vulcan.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n315/rlyons_photos/Vulcan/Vulcan3.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n315/rlyons_photos/Vulcan/Vulcan4.jpg
  5. When I got the 01 the guy I got it from said the cruse was a little intermittent, and it was. It would hold some now and then some times for five or so minutes, and other times up to 45 or so. Didn't think too much about it cause I was going to Trike it soon. After Triking I rode it foe a few hundred miles before taking it apart again to paint, but at about 300 or so miles the speed -o went nuts, all over the dash, and I thought that the sensor got knocked out of whack underneath. I couldn't do any thing until I got the parts back to run it and check it out. I readjusted the sensor, and now have a steady needle, but the cruse upper two lights flash 4 times, and then off, with no set like before. I know that there are several things to check, but what I am really asking to get started is. Is the sensor a good or bad, go-no go device or can they be intermittent AKA Flaky. I know that until I get a rock solid speed the cruse isn't going to do diddly. Any ideas...
  6. Just drained the rear Hypo oil and there was milk in the oil. It was changed in March and about 7000 miles ago. I went on a rideabout to Omaha-Dallas-Charlotte and rode in a fair amount of rain but not terrible. What seals do you think are failing? The bike has 131,300 miles.
  7. I ride an 08 RSTD. I just made a trailer to pull behind my bike. Up here in SD, we usually run about 70-75 mph out in the country. My trailer weighs about 130 pounds empty, loaded about 185. Anyway I normally avg about 36-38 mpg. I did a test pull with the trailer the other day, putting about 80 miles or so on it. I did some in town pulling, so it wasnt all highway miles. I avg 27 mpg. Is this about right? Or should I try and stay out of overdrive and keep the revs up a bit more to keep from lugging the motor? I am a little disappointed in the mileage, but i knew it would drop. I figured that the trailer isnt that heavy so maybe id be ok. What is everybody else getting pulling a trailer? thanks in advance. Since the trailer is new and Im not used to it yet, im packing everything on the bike. The trailer is gonna have to wait......
  8. First off new to the Venture Motorcycle. Have been riding for 30 years but have rode mostly Goldwings latley and Harley's in the 70's but I love my Venture. I am getting around 46 mpg is this about what I should expect. I see a bunch like the Avon Venom tire.......Why? how come not the Dunlap Elite 3 How foten do most change thier oil? My Clymers Manual Says 8,000 miles but I am old school and think 4.000 miles at most. I do not like the fact that the only lights on the back is one tail light. What have others done to add more lighting without making it look over done. I like clean looking. I ride a 2000 Venture Limited Edition Thanks for Your input. Rick
  9. My 16 YOA son bought himself a bike! We found a 1983 Honda CM250 Custom on Craig's List in Mitchell, SD. Went to look at it last night. It is in very good shape. Odometer reads only 3350 miles. It sure seems like it could be original. Very few nicks and dings. Everything works and it all feels tight. Too much wind around here to ride it home 70 miles but she fit in the pickup easily. He is signed up for the MSF course to be held here in Madison on July 10 & 11. I think this will be a great starter bike for him and it only cost hiim $500.00!!!!!!!!! I know this may be too late to be asking, but does anybody know anything about this bike? We are looking forward to getting out to ride together, even if only to DQ! Dave
  10. While I was in the process of changing the tires, I tightened the steering head nuts as Freebird describes in the maint section. Question being this: After 32,000 +/- miles, is 1/4 to 1/3 turn too much or about right? Steering feels ok, so I guess that is all that really matters.
  11. I am leaving work for our mediation in a few minutes. For someone that put very little into a marriage, she sure wants a lot out of it. hummmm... what is a 27 year old Yamaha with 135,000 miles on it worth anyway? RandyA
  12. Well, after 19,000 miles, I decided it is time to replace the Dunlop E3s. I was hoping to get another 1000 miles out of them. I guess that is a macho thing. But it would be great to say that I got 20k miles on a set of MC tires. Placed the order and should have the new tires before the weekend. They had the front E3 in stock but had to get ther rear from manufacturer. Guess that means I'll get a few more miles on this set. Rear still has some life on it, but the front is into the wear bars. New tires, grease slpines, shaft & hub, new final oil, stearing head bearing service. I got some work to do.
  13. It was epic, at least for me. 4424 miles in 9 calendars, 7 riding days, all of it towing a trailer. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4114/4786266951_9ea6715e72.jpg I had been planning this trip for months, laying in supplies and gear. I intended it to be a trial to a shorter but more camping-oriented trip coming up in September. That one doesn't have as many fall-back options, so I wanted to shake the bugs out NOW. There were bugs, and please note that I will be posting a trailer-centric message in that forum, but in this post will just mention in passing the issues I had. My trip actually was to start a week-ago Friday (7/17). I wanted to get a jump on the trip, since I was flying my wife Jamie to Indianapolis to avoid the longest days. I had to be there in time to get her at the airport, so I left after work Thursday. I ran up to Shreveport to have dinner with a friend, then rode on the freeways to Jackson, MS. I wanted to avoid deer, so I took the major roads. After three hours sleep, I headed north. It was my first real night riding with the HID, and I have to say that I wasn't impressed. It just didn't seem that much brighter than my old Silverstar Ultra. I didn't see the doe feeding on the shoulder until she was lit by the passing lamps, for example. However, one fellow got pissed at me and tailgated me for a while with his high beams on. I guess it was plenty bright for him. LOL I was just considering braking and then tailgating him with the high beams when he slowed and turned off his brights. No harm, no foul. I completed an iron butt by 2PM, but didn't print the form nor have the receipts, so I let it go. Besides, I already have my certificate. I got to Indy around 4:30 and relaxed until her plane came in. I was so relaxed, that I forgot that there was a time zone difference! I took the hotel shuttle and got there just in time to collect her. The next day we traveled to Battle Creek, MI, where my family still lives. We had a short diversion to Ohio. LOL One thing I saw right away was the casinos. In Michigan?! Things change, I guess. Sunday was the family reunion—the reason for the trip—and an off day. I did a minor trailer repair (see other post) and we went to the reunion on the bike. It was nice family time. Monday we went to the Soo Locks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Jamie had her first pastie in Mackinaw City, and it was delicious! The Mackinaw Bridge was scary to cross—the solid lane was closed for construction and we rode on the grating. I hate that stuff! At least it wasn't windy! The Soo wasn't busy, and we enjoyed watching a tour boat go through and I explained how the locks worked. Then we had an adult beverage before heading to the state park to camp. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4809470274_1644223e42.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4810290320_741b8295b0.jpg It was our first night really camping with the bike. Our previous trial included a friend with a car, which carried supplemental stuff. This time we were on our own. The Powerlets I'd installed on Roxie had worked perfectly, keeping our electronic tethers charged. Now, it inflated the air mattress—almost. It turns out that a hole had worn in it. We rode back to Sault Ste Marie and got a patch kit, and it lasted most of the night. By morning, we were caught in the floppy water-bed feeling deflated air mattress. Ha! Tuesday, we packed and had breakfast at the diner outside the state park. Those were the greasiest hashbrowns I had ever experienced. I am glad I had listened to the LD riders' advice and packed Kaopectate. The roads along the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway were gorgeous and deserted. We stopped to experience Tahquamenon Falls, which were even better than I remembered. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4123/4812710574_a8f5a1efd7.jpg We hustled to Marquette, where I'd planned to get pasties and eat at a park by Lake Superior. However, the dark rain clouds and trailer repairs forced us to change plans. We left Marquette in a heavy rain that changed to a drizzle until we got to the Keweenaw Peninsula. We gassed up in Houghton, then took recommended routes along the western edge of the peninsula. By the time we took the Brockway Mountain Drive, skies were blue with fluffy clouds. Even so, we were done with the outdoors following the rain, and elected to stay in a motel instead. Snow gauge http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4828386218_7c22f8f9ea.jpg The beginning of US41 http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4828386706_02392e293b.jpg US41 is LONG! 1990 miles to Florida http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4827779821_2ceb181148.jpg I was struck at how many conversations we heard of return visitors to Copper Harbor. SO many people return again and again. It seemed like a pleasant, tranquil place, and the thimbleberry cobbler was delish. I would like to go back. Wednesday, we took US-41 south out of Copper Harbor. Those first dozen miles are incredible, probably the best roads I can remember. Smooth, twisty, and covered by a canopy, they are magic! The remainder of the roads to Green Bay were pretty, but mostly looked the same. I put Jamie on a plane and then my solo trip resumed. I began to pound the pavement hard, eating up miles. I met a friend in Wausau, and continued to Minneapolis. I got there by 9PM, and had a late dinner with a friend. She insisted I try the burger at the Buffalo Tap, since she knows I am an avid burger connoisseur. It was "good", perhaps the best in the Minneapolis area, but would only get a B by Texas standards. Buffalo Tap Burger http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4828387308_7bbc4c7d37.jpg Rain was coming, and I didn't want to fight rush hour traffic with wet roads, so I was traveling by 5AM. I wanted to get to Omaha by dinner time, so I of course went to Fargo. LOL! I had to collect North and South Dakota for my ride map. Minnesota and the Dakotas have surprisingly good terrain. Maybe it is that I am used to Houston Flat, but I loved these roads. What I didn't love was the construction. SO MUCH CONSTRUCTION! Very irritating! I am glad that they are spending the stimulus money (finally), but seriously. 300 miles of construction would be plenty, don't you think? It was raining or threatening rain until I got to Iowa, so I wore my rain gear. That did a great job of keeping in my body moisture, so by the time I got to my friend's in Omaha by 7PM, I was a stinky mess. Luckily, they had both a shower and a cold adult beverage (or two). The next day (Friday) was my first non-riding day since the Sunday before. I hung around town, met friends, and showed my friend's wife how to add water to her Suzuki Intruder's battery. She loved learning how to do something for herself, and an hour's labor just worked up my appetite for the burger at Stella's. Now, this burger is justifiably famous. It gets a very solid A from me. The fries were great as well. Stella's in Omaha: remember it! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4821785478_1a4d2cfb1b.jpg I wanted to be home yesterday (Saturday), so I got an early start. My phone kept thinking I had a text message, and kept making a noise every 15 minutes. It was my alarm, so I hesitated to turn it off. But when I rebooted it, the noise stopped and I still got my alarm. I was on the road by 5:15 despite a nearly sleepless night. Not much to report for yesterday, except a 900 mile day. Kansas and Oklahoma had some really nice roads. I dodged a bullet coming into Houston, when a terror of a storm blew in. My route let me thread the needle, and I stayed dry. Eventually most parts that I went through got 3+" of rain. Like I said at the top, I went 4424 miles on what amounted to a trial trip for the real McCoy in September. Most of my miles will be with the wife on that trip, I want them as easy and trouble free as possible. The technique of flying her so as to skip the longest days worked really well. She has shown that she can do a few 350 miles days without complaint. I'm looking forward to those! Dave
  14. Well, after 5 years on the RSV, I went to the dark side. Traded my 04 RSV for a 06 Ultra Classic. Please no boo's or hisses. Bought the RSV, it had 1300 miles, yes 1300 miles for $10,000 even. Traded it this week at Harley dealer for $7,000 which I didn't think was bad and picked up the Ultra. Its and 06 with 24,000 miles.
  15. Would 47,000 on a '99 be too many miles to switch over to MC Synthetic oil? Whacha think??
  16. Demands of the new job have been such that I've only been able to log a few hundred miles over the last two years. Alas I hate to be paying insurance and watching the beautiful machine sitting. I've listed it on eBay - but also put it in the classifieds here. I'll drop $200 for any member that may be interested. If you bid & win on eBay for less I'll knock off the $200 from that if you're a member too. It's a 2003 RSV (the great red color!) with 29,250 miles and in great shape. Hope the job will leave a bit more free time in the near future. Perhaps just in time to get a third gen;-) Until then I'll be stuck in a cage or an airplane most of the time. Thanks for taking a look. -Greg
  17. Ok I have some 67,000 miles under my 2004 RSV and have been on the Dunlop 404 WWW for the most. Last set I changed to the Elite3 Dunlop. I would like to see if any others have had similar findings. Yes I read about folks getting all kinds of diffrent mileage from all the diffrent tires, but I have the following findings and are looking for another opinion. Dunlop 404 Changed at miles Tire Life Miles 05-20-06 11,655 miles 11,655 05-05-07 22,575 miles 10,920 04-20-08 33,530 miles 10,955 07-12-08 43,614 miles 10,084 05-15-09 51,741 miles 8,127 11-10-09 58,950 miles 7,209 Dunlop Elite3 07-22-10 67,141 miles 8,191 Looking to make a change for more mileage than I have been getting. 80% of the time two up and on the back roads in the mountains. I ride hard on the throttle and like I stole it in the curves. Dunlop 404's I had decent mileage but the performace was lacking, however I did not have the awful tractor tire roar that the Dulop Elite 3 has in the curves. Elite 3 performace in all conditions were unfalable but the noise is terrible. I thought the clutch basket noise was bad. Rear shock still has fluid and still holds air with never leaking. Tires are always checked for pressure before it rolls out of the garage no matter if it is just down to the store. Pressure nevers seems to be low. I always run at 41 PSI. Thoughts from the all great would be appreciated!
  18. I finished installing the Nexen yesterday and although I haven't been able to ride the bike much since I finished, the miles I have ridden with it have been positive. Thanks to those who post on this forum for all the great info that I used in making my decision to go to the Darkside. My install experience was much like others posters have written about. I did take the opportunity to check the driveshaft splines and the drive unit while i had the bike apart. Although the bike only has 2000 miles on it I just feel better knowing all is well. You put the Carbon One lift adapter together with my craftsman jack and it makes working on the bike a dream.. David aka wngrr
  19. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Royal-Star-2007-VENTURE-/320562665776?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item4aa3061930 2000 miles?? Insane!!
  20. my RSMV was totaled a couple weeks ago, now I'm looking for another one. What would be a better deal, an 06 with 20,000 miles, or a 99, at half the price, with 18,000 miles? Are there any major differences between years?
  21. Is there any way to check wear on front brakes without pulling them? I've got 29,000 miles on them and they still work fine. Don't know how many miles you can get out of them. Glenn
  22. have any of you guys tryed the kenda tires on your bike?? i recently bought a new kenda tire for the back of my v-star for $72.50 size 17/80/15... when i got the tire i was really impressed.. the tire side wall was rather thick, and the tread design was rather inpressive also.. i have used e tires years ago and they seemed to last for around 12000 miles.. i ordered 1 for my buddies 09 vulcan 900 about 2 months ago.. he now has over 1500 miles on it and it still shows no wear yet.. i ordered them thru denniskirk.com .. got them within 24 hours.. of course they are located here in minnesota.. worth the check out.. it was the kruz tire, that my buddy got.. they up graded his to that, nicer tire than mine, but im happy with mine.. i will tryto get a coupleof pictures up later today..
  23. Got back home last night from the Black Hills....had a great time...just thought I'd share a pix of a place where we hadn't been before. It's a town (population....probably 3) called Rochford. You drive 17 miles in on blacktop, eat at the bar and drive 17 miles back out. The place was packed!
  24. What's everyone running for engine oils and final drive oils, I can't see paying a dealer to do this every 3000 miles. I'm going to and do most maint. myself. Thanks
  25. I am not planning on doing this on a reg basis, just did it to see how the delo holds up in the RSV Delo 400 15/40 at 5140 miles, I pulled a sample and then changed oil. I have a buddy at a lab, so I did not have to pay for this. Anyway the results, there were no abnormal wear patterns indicated. and the oil was shown to be at 40%. He told me I could extend the oil changes to 7500 miles, however I am going to continue to change at 5000 miles. This was just for info, oil analysis can show abnormal and contamination, but would be too expensive just to try to extend oil changes on a bike, but it does indicate to me that the RSV should do well with delo or rotella with 5000 mile change and good filters. When I get the hard copy I will scan it and post it. Gregg
