1. Rehabbing the old bike. Replaced all instrument panel bulbs, turned on ignition and the headlight warning illuminated. Headlight is very dim and won't cycle lo-hi beam. Replaced bulb, same situation. Now making sure the battery is fully charged. Light worked fine up until now. Any ideas?
2. Two questions: One! after riding through a downpour at night my headlight quit. I replaced the fuse and saw a "flash" when I turned the ignition on. Headlight still worked on low beam but high beam is dim and brings on the headlight warning light and the CM blinks, the fuse is fine. Could this just be the bulb being bad (it looks OK)? Two! Trying to find a possible bad contact for the above I pulled the headlight, apparently the PO had a "accesory" hooked into a tan #10 wire under the panel. the accesory wire wasn't capped or taped of when he cut it, and it hit the headlight frame. Nothing works!!, All fuses in the fuse panel are OK, I know there should be some other fuse somewhere, but I can't find it. Do I need to pull the entire fairing? Do I need to look for something else? Oh, that was bright! Found that one on top of the battery! For some reason I thought it was down under the fairing! so that answers that, next question though is: Where do I get a new one??
3. In the last couple of weeks I have been getting an intermittant warning light on the computer display telling me that there is a problem with my headlight (?high beam?). When I switch to low beam the indicator goes out, once I turn the high beam on it comes back (sometimes with a delay, sometimes with the flick of the switch). The headlight is actually on for both high and low beam. It seems that the longer I ride the warning will become less intermittantant and eventually remains off. Any ideas??? I'm thinking lose ground somewhere or the "?reserve headlight unit?". As mentioned the headlight remains on the entire time so my thought process would be somewhere in the sensor circuitry. Advise please......I hate little red warning lights
4. I have a '83 standard that I have been altering the electrical system since I got it last year. So far I have added the Shindengen R/R, a cooling fan run timer, a Internatrix security alarm, replaced the fuse box with a ATO style, moved the TCI onto the top of the airbox and today I would like to share the installation of a HID Bi-Xeon headlight. I bought the HID kit on Ebay for only $58.00 and the shipping was free from Hong Kong. The package arrived in 6 days! I had followed the previous thread on the projector type headlight replacement but didn't like the change in the front look of the bike. I like the square headlight and I wanted to see if I could find a good H4 HID kit to increase the light output and longevity. I found this kit on Ebay Item number:170371397794 and I went ahead and purchased it. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised with the completeness of the kit and the ease of installation. I decided to mount the slim ballast in the fairing next to the headlight frame using dual-lock mounting strip (super velcro!!). This makes it very accessable and adds cooling if neccessary. The included relay module (routes 12v direct from battery) was secured behind the left turn signal inside the fairing cavity. I use this space to mount additional relays for my drivinglights, dual fanfare horns and cooling fan timer relays. This space is easily accessed and fairly protected from heat and weather. I had previously installed a 20W halogen (type BA9s) light bulb into the metal headlight reflector. This gave me a daytime running light to reduce the unnecessary useage of the main headlight and reduced the amp draw on the charging system. I incorporated this smaller bulb into the new headlight circuit by installing a rocker switch on the left side fairing next to my 12v receptacle. The rocker switch selects between the 20W halogen daytime running light and the HID low beam setting (daytime or night selection). I have only had the HID system installed a short time but I am very pleased with the function. The HID bulb is tilted in it's socket by a solenoid to change between high beam and low beam. The bulb stays energized all the time so the light output stays constant. The bulb just tilts upward for the high beam. The kit is marketed for motorcycle use so I expect it should stand up to use on the Venture. Only time will tell....
5. I bought a sealed-beam Halogen headlight to try in my VR. Has anyone tried this?
6. I have various reasons for wanting to do this...I want to install a off/on toggle switch so I can shut off my headlight when I feel like it..Has anyone done this? I was wondering if I did shut off the headlight would the red light start flashing and would the high and low beam icon also start flashing....
7. Does anyone have a head light frame they don't need? I want to install a Tribar lens on the Venture headlight frame, but don't want to destroy my stocker. It doesn't matter if the lens is cracked or broken, I'm going to break it out anyway. Thanks, Ponch
8. Brian Fries aka Friesman1 has offered up a Headlight modulator that he is not going to use. It is brand new in the package. It is a Pathblazer. Retail value of about $50.00. Now in order for someone to claim this unit there is a catch. Before I explain the catch, you need to know that the proceeds of this sale will go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. If you have read previous posts about our efforts to raise money for St. Jude, you will know that others have had fundraisers to help with this cause. This year we raised $3,450.00. This brings our totals for the past 5 years close to $9,800.00. We not only raise funds this way but also by visiting the Mean Dog Tribute site where contributions can be made. If you want to have this for your own and help out the kids at St. Jude, all you have to do is make a $25.00 donation to the Mean Dog Tribute site. We only have one so the first person to post wanting to make a donation will receive this headlight modulator. The link for the Tribute site is at the bottom of this page in my signature. Thanks to Brian donating this item.
9. I saw on one of the bike groups a pointer to an installation guide of a headlight delay (pdf). The point is to use a relay to turn off the headlight while the starter is energized. "Doing this eliminates a 10A drain on the battery when it is needed the most." I've not noticed many issues with my RSTD, even with passing lamps on. Has anyone done this with our bikes? Is it a PITA? Dave
10. If you were on a first generation today at Biker Rags in Knoxville, you left your headlight on.
11. Although I've had my 99 for five years I've never ridden in the dark in the country until this weekend.I left Cocoa at 5 AM headed for Tampa and I was NOT impressed with the headlight. It looked like I had a kerosene lantern lighting the way.Any ideas on a bulb upgrade?
12. I am still in Charlotte at the nieces house and stopped at the local Yamaha dealership, Interstate Cycles. http://www.interstatecycle.com/ They have a MM on cosignment, with a bit over 11K on it for $8K. The bike is as near perfect as I have ever seen one and if I had the money I would buy in a second. It has saddlebag guards, a trunk rack, passing lights with visors on all turn signals and headlight. The bike is really a super nice machine and if your looking for a MM then I would highly recommend this one. Contact guy is Kevin and I mentioned to them that I would post it up on the site.
13. I've gone through the partial burning headlight bit and resoldered the cirquit. I double checked that a couple of weeks ago when I re-did all the contacts in there. The computer module does not show an error! Having said that, I got caught in a downpour and stopped under an overpass, when i crancked the bike back up I had no dashlights or head light. Running lights, accesory lights and tail light all worked. I assumed a blown fuse so I replaced that at my destination. Turned the key to check they were working, got a flash like a blown bulb and nothing. Still had driving lights so I figured I'd run those on the way home. When it was time to leave I cranked the bike up, no low beam as expected; wondered about high beam and that came on, switched back to low beam and that came on! What gives?? Since then I've had both low and high beam, I've had no lights at all and I've had the dash warning light on with both the low and/or high beam crapping out part ways. A couple of times rocking the switch seems to have "fixed" it but not always. I've got an oversized fuse in the panel now and the poles seem to be getting pretty warm. Not real keen on pulling the computer again. Seems like a power drain/short somewhere but have no clue where to start or how to find it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
14. Ever think that chrome headlight shroud gives your 2nd gen a "cyclops" look? Here's a couple pics of mine I "cleaned up" (rather quickly) .... looks a whole lot cleaner to me now. I was contemplating getting a second chrome shroud and painting it to match the scoot just up to the forward edge and wondered what it would look like. I think I like it! 3rd pic of course is the stock one.
15. Went out to go for a ride today and found my headlight was out. High beam worked ok. I felt for the plug up beside the headlight adjuster knob to see if it had come loose (again). It was tight. I then pulled the fairing off and then the headlight bracket and found that the plug was completely melted. The metal clips were still plugged on to the bulb but the plastic was a molten ball of plastic. I checked the circuit with a spare bulb I had and everything still worked. So the Silverstar bulb I put in a year ago had blown. I wonder if the Silverstar produces too much heat or was there a bad connection causing the heat? Don't know if I should put another Silverstar in or go back to the stock bulb...after I change the plug of course. Whatcha all think?
16. I bought a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis 2 weeks ago and the headlights were horrible on it. I priced new ones and about choked. I saw Walmart did a headlight restoration for $40. I found out it's just a 3M kit that anyone can buy for $20 at VatoZone, Oreilly's,Napa, or Advance Auto. I tried the Meguiar's PlastX and spent an hour polishing them by hand. They looked better but they were still cloudy. I broke down and bought the 3M kit this morning after watching some youtube videos on headlight restoration. This kit works great. My headlights are crystal clear like new. If you have yellow, foggy, or cloudy headlights, this is a MUST!! You don't need the kit to do this. If you have very fine sandpaper (2000 grit or finer), then you could do this yourself by hand. I had no sandpaper nor do I have a polishing pad so the kit was more economical for me. The kit comes with 2 different sanding discs, a 3000 grit sanding pad, a polishing pad, an arbor and Velcro pad to attach the sanding discs and pad to, and some 3M plastic polish. You start out with an 800 grit paper and completely sand the headlight until the entire lens is a uniform texture. Next, sand it with a 2000 grit paper until all the there is a finer uniform texture. Then, use the 3000 grit sanding pad and water to sand all the scratches out of it. Finally, use the polishing pad and plastic polish to bring the headlight to crystal clear shine. Be very careful to keep the sanding discs clean. I apparently had something on one of my discs and now have some tiny little swirlly scratches in my left headlight. I can only see them at certain angles and I can feel them with my fingernail. I could probably sand the lens down some more and polish it out, but I'm very happy with the current results. I also removed three molded tits off the headlight lens. I took a rotary tool and ground them down flush and the 3M kit polished them out smooth. http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/650/1000563small.jpghttp://img265.imageshack.us/img265/8449/1000564small.jpghttp://img176.imageshack.us/img176/4675/1000565small.jpghttp://img269.imageshack.us/img269/6892/1000566small.jpghttp://img176.imageshack.us/img176/406/1000569small.jpghttp://img190.imageshack.us/img190/1906/1000570small.jpghttp://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3530/1000571small.jpghttp://img44.imageshack.us/img44/9899/1000576small.jpg
17. Hello everyone. I am looking for a clear headlight lens. Anyone know where I can get one at? Bill
18. Just wanted to thank the members of the forum and the moderators. I've had my 03 RSV for a week, have received plenty of great information here and gladly paid my dues. This bike had been popping headlight fuses almost daily. I had started taking the normal diagnostic paths of disabling external devices, tracing power leads for accessories, still the popping fuses. Carrying an allen key and box of fuses in my pocket was the norm. Before going down the path of a more detailed diagnoses or takign it to the dealer, I decided to do a search on "headlight" here and stumbled across a problem that seems to plague many who have the added passing lamp kit; pinched wires in the steering head stop and that is my problem! Repired the connection, wire tied it back and problem solved. Again, thank you all for your contributions to the site. Without, I may have spent many more hours and dollars on this one. Andrew
19. I just added a Drivers backrest from Diamond R, and Headlight and driving light covers.
20. First of all I’ve got to say that I love this site and all the ideas, opinions and constructive criticism that flow through it. Some of the bantering that goes on is pretty funny too… like what color is the fastest, lol! ... Isn’t that silly, we all know that Black Cherry is the fastest and that 2nd Gen rules! So I’ve been wanting a new ‘Do you see me now’ horn because as you know stock horns just don’t make the cut. Stock horns are nice when you want to politely get someone’s attention without shouting but that’s about it. Having said that my goal was to find an alternate location for a horn, install a separate switch and keep the stock horn operational. I lucked out on a Bad Boy horn for $29. but couldn’t find a decent switch for a fair price so here’s what I did… I came across a left hand control cluster off an old Kawasaki, it’s almost identical to one on the venture. Long story short I cut the horn switch off the bottom of the cluster, made a separate switch out of it and installed it under my existing horn switch. Now I can use either horn (or both) and the switch is in reach of my thumb. Although it was a tight fit I made a little bracket and mounted the horn under the front faring to the left of the cassette player/amp (black box). Being under the faring the horn is still quite loud and its right up front where I want it. The horn is on a separate fused circuit through a relay wired directly to the battery. The other thing I did (with some help from our tech library) was a headlight mod. I now have the Tri Bar headlight with passing lamps to match. I’ve upgraded the headlight bulb to an ultra and the passing lamp bulbs to the PIA H-3. There is not much more I want to do to the bike besides ride it... although I do like the idea of swapping out the cassette player for some gauges... does it ever end!?! Here are some pictures including a before and after of the headlight...
21. Is there an alternate headlight of the automotive variety that fits my second gen RSTD and does'nt cost $70?
22. I stand before you today, a broken man. I removed the trim, headlight lens, windshield, dash cover, Removed the CMS, soldered it, put it all back together and that pesky headlight STILL doesn't work. I will say that Icons and information on the CMS work now that never worked before. But NO HEADLIGHT! I am now officially asking any Electrical Guru if they would be willing to take a shot at this problem. I am willing to travel and I hope there is someone close enough that I can make the ride one way in 24 hours. If I thought GEORGE S would adopt me, I would be headed to his house as we speak. I am laid off right now and have some time so I would like to get this fixed. I might add that I do have some wiring issues and this could be the problem but as I stated in the Tag Line I am "Electrically Retarded" and need some help. Anybody Want Some Company? Earl
23. Ok. I am having the problem with the headlight icon staying on my display, and getting the flashing red warning on my '83 Venture. I started out with the headlight, and the battery flashing, because I just put a new battery on, and the terrible whine in my speedometer. I did the 1k ohm resistor fix, and took care of the battery icon...great fix, thanks. I also removed the instrument panel and greased the speedo bushing with white lithium grease...works great...thanks. I then resoldered all of the connections for the big white connector, plus a few more cold joints that I found. After all of that, the only problem I still have, is the headlight icon, and flashing red light. All of my lights work fine. Any more Ideas, before I get out the schematic, and pick the bike apart wire by wire?
24. Boy Guys and Gals, I could really use some help on this one! I am an IDIOT when it comes to electric problems! I had the 86'VR in the garage to replace the starter solenoid and after the work, the headlight will not come on when I turn on the key. No low beam or high beam. So far I have checked the fuse (good) and sprayed contact cleaner in the ignition switch with no good results. PLEASE help me!!! Earl
25. I'm a RSV 2007 and I would like to replace my original headlamp by a more efficient headlight. Please give me your suggestion of replacement. Louis Quebec, Canada
