  1. I'm looking for an owners manual for my 1989 Venture Royale-----any suggestions?
  2. I've been looking at purchasing the J&M CB Radio. Does anyone have experience with this product? The only thing I'm concerned about is the dual mode one for two riders with all the necessary wiring, head sets, antinnia can cost up to $700! Any thoughts suggestions? Thanks Mark
  3. I called my local dealer yesterday to ask about a problem I'm having on the bike. When I get up to cruising speed is when it is most noticeable, 70 mph, set cruise it feels like it has a miss or is trying to flood. Thought it might be a plug not firing but all pipes are hot. The dealer told me they have been having alot of this happening. It stems from the ethanol enhanced gasoline we now have to use. The gas is eating up the gaskets and rubbers in the carbs. Will have to have carbs rebuilt 5000 miles. At least its under warranty:bang head:. Big brother sure knows how to stick to the people. The ethanol dries out rubber and cracks and comes apart screwing everything up. Asked him what can we do to prevent this from happening again, he said he wasn't sure, have to add something with lubricity every now and then might help.Just thought everyone might want to know.
  4. I'm replacing the steering head bearing on my '83. The manual says 5.1 ft/lbs. Where have you adjusted yours to with the hack attached? I've been told that you can tighten it down more to prevent wobble with the hack. Thanks
  5. I reordered some more steering head wrenches if anyone is interested. I had a price increase from my vendor, the cost is now $23.00. Shipping included. There is an ad in classifieds, or the info is here to order. I have include a PDF cut from the 1st Gen & RSV service manuals relating to the procedure to set torque. Pay attention to text about setting torque wrench at a 90 degree angle to wrench. Not doing so will affect torque reading. Also listed below are the threads relating to this tool. Gary http://www.venturerider.org/forum/sh...ad.php?t=45046 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/sh...ad.php?t=44833 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/sh...ad.php?t=44719 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/sh...=steering+head http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT5202.jpg The procedure for setting steering head torque is outlined in the service manuals beginning with the 1986 manual. This is under Periodic Inspection & Adjustment - Chassis - Steering Head Adjustment. Also, if you are the proud owner of the MKI (83-85) Ventures, you could use the procedure outlined in the 86-93 manual. If you need a copy of this procedure I can provide it for you. The tool will work on any year Venture. The same part number is shown in the part fiche from 1983 through the RSV's for the steering head bearing nut. The tool will also work on 1st gen VMaxs & FJR's 1996-1998 and 2005-2009 Yamaha Tour Deluxe The tool is laser cut from 1/4" thick, 304 stainless steel, Mill Finish. I can supply this tool at a cost of $23.00 including first class shipping to lower 48 US & Canada, first class shipping. If you would like to order one or more my paypal address is gary@dinges.com. I will see the paypal transaction in my email. I can also accept check or money orders. PM me for address. Please mark payment as a personal transaction. Paypal does not send your address to me when it is marked a gift. Please include shipping address & your screen name in Paypal transaction, comments field. Attached are pictures showing the finished tool. Socket extension and nut are not included. Gary
  6. Seems like when ever we slow down to take a turn or come into a town Mary's headset starts cutting out from one side to the other. That's how she explained it to me. It just about drives her nuts. Once we speed up again it's OK. Only thing I can think of is to grease up the connections. I guess we could swap head sets to see if the problem follows. Anybody got a better idea?
  7. Hey Brad....My clutch has begun to slip. I'm going to contact Skydoc and get that upgrade kit from him. Is there anything else I should order/buy? If things work out I hope to head your way soon to get this clutch job done. Can the wife make enuff cheesecake to keep me busy and outta yer hair? Warmest regards.....Boomer
  8. Hey all: Well, heading out on my first long trip on my 07 midnight RSV to Sanford, fla on Thursday. Leaving as soon as school is out as I have a 12 day break and ready to head south to visit my daughter. Got a new rear tire on yesterday, fluids topped off and got her washed and waxed yesterday. Anyone have any lastminute tips as I head south Thursday. Will try to get on Thursday night after checking into hotel and then Friday night after I get there. Plan on taking it steady and not in a hurry. Appreciate any prayers for safe travel. Brian D.
  9. where does a guy get another intercom cable for the headset??? and how much are they?? does any one have one to sell???:crying:
  10. I plan on leaving Wednesday Morning, and heading south through IL. I hope to meet DynoDon for lunch, and stay somewhere south of Champaign by dark that night. Hope to get somewhere near Memphis by Thursday night, and get to the Loozeeaner Meet and Wrench by Friday night. We'll see how the :snow:weather cooperates:cold:. If I fall a little short, I've got an offer from wes0778 to stay in Jackson, and head to the M&W Saturday morning. After the M&W, I want to get to Cocoa Beach by Monday night to see a Delta IV rocket launch. Tuesday I'll head up to Daytona to buy a t-shirt that says I was there and probably go camp out at the ABATE campground. From there I hope to head up the east coast for a few more states I've never been in, and head home from there. Anyone else on here go to Bike Week??? I'll be updating this thread as things progress. Later, Scooter Bob Oh ya, I've got to swing by Milwaukee and pick up Shari along the way.
  11. At the end of last Summer there I was, scratching my head in disbelief, unable to decide whether I should laugh or be disappointed... Rewind 30 minutes... I'm puttin' along, mowing roughly 2-3 acres with my Father In Law's trusty John Deere tractor, and 72" finish mower when Crystal volunteered to use the electric Weedeater while I was mowing. "Great! Let me show you how to use it..." "Pull trigger, it cuts, keep it kinda level, make passes, and if the string gets short, give it a little 'bop' on the ground, and more will come out." Fast forward, to the beginning- still scratching my head.... Having parked the tractor, and being done with the mowing, I decide to go commandeer the weedeater, 'cause I knew if *I* hated using it, she'd hate it more... On my way walking toward the house, I keep seeing little pieces of yellow and green plastic, and I start to worry, because chances are I ran over one of the kids' toys again... Nope. I approach Crystal, who is staring at the head of the weedeater, frustrated beyond belief that the F***ing string won't come out! That's when I notice, the entire guard for the weedeater is obliterated. When 'bopping' it didn't work, it turned to 'whomping' and proceeded to 'whacking' and 'smashing.' There was a handle with a trigger, and the spinning head. That's all that was left of the weedeater. Sure enough, I tell her "Oh, it must have jammed, these things happen..." and I send her in the house to go about her business. I pull the trigger, give it a tap, and continue weedeating, as my shins are being destroyed by debris, even through my jeans. SO- Here's the real meat of my post... Needing a new weedeater, we head to Sears and come across Excalibur of Weedeaters! It's a propane powered trimmer, with interchangeable heads, yadda yadda yadda... It uses the small camping sized propane bottles, which last around 2 hours at full throttle. (Which as you may know, the small bottles can be refilled by your 15lb propane tank from your grill with an adapter from Harbor Freight) No mixing gas, no priming bulbs, no 50+ pulls to start. I had it assembled in 10 minutes, and started in 30 seconds! The only maintenance is changing the oil, and spark plug once in a while... Literally. That's it. I love this thing! It set us back about $160 for the 'bigger' one which I think weighs around 14lbs, and comes with a shoulder strap. Available in straight shaft, or curved. I opted for the curved. Just had to share the joy of my new weedeater, since I was just reminded that I have to use it tomorrow.
  12. I am looking at a Yamaha Head set on e-bay. Package shows it is a Yamaha Product. The seller says it is a 6 pin din connector. I have a 2006 RSV and the info I have says my connecting receptical is a 5 pin. Anyone know if this will item will work on my bike? Thanks in advance for any info
  13. Is the screw that holds the blinker lens in something different than a regular phillips head? I was trying to use a standard phillips screwdriver and did not have any success. I am trying to figure if mine are wallowed out phillips head or something different as far as the head goes.
  14. Went to take the tank off this evening; one front side Allen head bolt removed with ease; the other one stripped like butter. Now what? Can't grip the head with vice grips; tried three different styles/size with no success. Cutting off the head would do no good because the bolt sticks out about 1/2 inch into the gas tank mount. The gas tank mount doesn't seem to have much give to pry it from the bolt if all that was removed was the head. Any ideas?
  15. I removed the fuse to replace it.(blown) I lost it, does anybody know what size it is? Did I see 5 amp someplace?
  16. I need more advise. I decided to tighten the steering head bearing a bit today. I tried to loosen the top nut but could get it to budge. How hard should it be to move this? Do I need to use a cheater to break it free? I dont want to break anything. Thanks JR
  17. 83 VR front head off due to low compression cyl#2 head gasket in 3 pieces (3 layers of thin steel), is this correct-are these 3 layers supposed to be pressed together into 1 thick gasket, or has a previous owner stacked multiple gaskets for some reason. do have blowby signs on the gaskets, if 3 layers stacked, reason may have been to take up valve slack lost during head mill?? any way to measure correct mill height to verify if done if in fact head milled, then what...may be looking for new head:doh: any thoughts appreaciated brian
  18. Ok it looks like it's official and this is short notice, but we will be hosting a get together for maintenance and eating and whatever at my house in Bogalusa, La. next saturday, Feb 27th. Boomer and squidly have said they would be comming, maybe Wes? if anyone else is planning please let me know. The wife said she would cook so need a head count. If you would like to come friday that's fine, we have plenty camping space and there is a hotel in town (Travlers Rest and Sportsman Inn). Original thread http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=45439 Look forward to all who could make it.
  19. Here is a shortcut to check the amount of grease in your steering head bearings. The problem here is that the service interval for re-greasing the steering head bearings is every 16,000 miles, but on the RSV, the amount of work it takes (and therefore, MONEY it takes) to access these bearings is HUGE! And it gets exponentially worse if someone has added a bunch of accessories and new wiring inside the fairing. The entire fairing, both outer shell and inner shell, must be removed before the top triple tree can be removed to access the bearing lock nuts. And to remove the inner fairing, you have to totally disconnect every single wire, plug and component inside the fairing! In fact, this whole process is supposedly required to simply ADJUST the steering head bearings, but thankfully we have documented a quick and easy shortcut to sneak underneath and adjust them without removing a single part. But back to the problem at hand - it is a full day's work to properly strip everything to drop the forks out of the steering head and inspect/de-grease the bearings. But I think I have found a relatively easy way to at least check the top bearing without going through the entire process. After splitting the fairing, the inner fairing can be unbolted by simply removing two nuts behind the top of the headlight and two socket-head bolts, one on either side of the bottom of the headlight. Once these are removed the fairing can be pulled several inches forward without disconnecting any of the wires, enough to fully access the top triple tree. With someone to hold the fairing, you could remove the triple tree and the top bearing without much more effort. Certainly the top bearing can be inspected and greased in this way, and if it looks like the bearings really need to be serviced, you could then just put the inner fairing back on the two studs and proceed to disconnect all the stuff needed to properly remove the forks. It seems possible that with enough care (and probably three people), one might even lower the forks enough in the steering head to access and grease the lower bearing this way. I think I am ready to try and make a video of this process if I can find a couple of folks willing to spend a day helping me through it. Goose
  20. I have received the sample of the tool that will allow the tightening of the fork bearing nut with a 3/8" torque wrench. It came out extremely nice. The part measures to within .002" of drawing. There are no signs of overheating or bluing from the laser cutting. Specification for steering head nut torque initial value is 36 ft/lbs. I tried tool at 65 ft/lbs. and it worked fine with no sign of deformation. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT5202.jpg The procedure for setting steering head torque is outlined in the service manuals beginning with the 1986 manual. 21. Hey all, I'm thinking of taking off the Cylinder Head Covers, and having them powdercoated, and I figured since it's liquid-cooled, it shouldn't affect heat dispersion too much... Anyone have any input on why I shouldn't move forward with this idea?
  22. I can not seem to find a socket to fit. First socket was not deep enough, then bought a new socket, and it was too thick. Now I am scratching my head. The socket fits on the plug, but cant reach the plug. The outer wall of the socket is stopping it from reaching the plug. Any help?
