  1. I am shamelessly plugging a classified ad I have posted in the First Gen. Parts Section. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=1724 It is the "Fix" for the leaking drain right below the radiator. Included are a new O'Ring and a new Stainless Steel Allen Head Cap Screw and S.S. lock washer to replace the Phillip's Head Screw. Install the upgrade and no more leak. Shipping is included in the price. The three pics below are location of drain, old parts and parts in upgrade. PayPal, Checks, Money Orders excepted. Earl
  2. I have been one of those VR owners that from time to time had a small puddle of coolant under the front of my 87'VR. Today, after draining the coolant, I pulled that @#$% Phillips head screw, removed the Drain plug and chased the ball and spring all across the shop floor. Who knew this was going to be this much fun! I cleaned up the Drain Plug and removed the old O'ring. I then cleaned the bore the Drain Plug goes into with Steel Wool. I installed the new O'ring, returned the spring and ball to it's rightful place, put the plug back into the bore and at this point I decided I didn't want to deal with that @#$% Phillips head screw so I replaced it with a Stainless Steel Allen Head cap screw and lock washer. Boy was it easier to tighten up that cap screw then that Phillips head screw! After filling the coolant and a test drive, guess what, No more leak! I attached some pics below. Earl
  3. I have had an antifreeze leak on my 1999 RSV for some time now. I have narrowed it down to a certain area that it is coming from. I need help on what to do. It is coming from the bottom of the side cover of the head. I am wondering if I take the side cover off is there a gasket or not? If it is not possible to be the side cover then do you think it would be the head gasket or the water jacket joint? I am going to attach some pictures? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I don't know a whole lot about motorcycles. Thanks hairman
  4. Not being the kinda' guy that likes to do things the easy way,But always looking to save a few bucks I purchased a set of Carb. Diaphragms off of Ebay a while back. ($86.00 with shipping) I thought I would give you a run down on how that went. After removing the False Tank cover and both side covers as well as the lower fairing legs on both sides I was able to get to all 4 Carbs. easily. To remove the Carb. covers I used 3 tools, a 1/4 inch drive ratchet with a special Torx bit on it for the 4 odd screws, an impact driver with a Phillips bit in it and finally a pair of Vise Grips for 2 of those Phillips head screws that just wouldn't come out. I took out the Torx head screws first on all 4 carbs. because when you remove the last Phillips head screw, you better have your catcher's mit on, that Carb. cover is coming off...FAST! I had set up 4 shop towels on my bench and kept all of the Carb. parts separated. I held each slider assembly up to a good light to inspect them and sure enough all 4 diaphragms had holes in them. I removed the old Carb. diaphragms by gripping the slider and "rolling" the old diaphragm out from between the two flanges on the slider. Two of the old diaphragms came off in pretty bad shape. I then cleaned all of the reusable parts with Carb. cleaner , but I must say that overall everything looked pretty clean. All 4 of the sliders were nice and smooth as were the Carb. bodies on the engine. I used a clean cloth and Carb. cleaner to clean out the Carb. body bores. (I don't use paper towels for this as I would not want a shard of paper ending up in the intake or the Carb. body) With everything clean I moved on to the reassembly. The Ebay diaphragms were not made of the same material as the stock Yamaha ones, but were very pliable, and had the tab for alignment in the Carb. body. After lubing the diaphragm with aerosol spray silicone I inserted the slider into the bore of the diaphragm. When I got to the flange, I stretched the diaphragm bore over the bottom flange. Now the spacing on the two flanges of the slider seemed a bit "slim" and I panicked for a moment but realized that by using my thumb nail I could wedge the diaphragm bore between the two flanges with no problem. When all was said and done you couldn't tell that the diaphragms and the sliders were not mated at the factory. I had the slider needles out for another project I will discuss later and at this point I reinstalled them. I put the slider assemblies back in the Carb. bodies aligning the tabs, put the caps on with the Stainless Steel Allen Head Cap Screw set I have listed in the classifieds and reinstalled all of the body parts and that as they say was that! Oh yea, I accidentally spilled some paint on the Carb. caps...Oops! I have attached some pics below and am willing to chat with anyone that is interested in this rebuild. Feel free to PM me. Sorry this got a bit "windy" Earl
  5. has anyone ever incountered this problem . 2003 midnight venture i put my right sinal on and my left one goes on and vise versa left signal...... right goes on and also my fuses for my head lights and running lights keeps popping i cant find a bare wire anywhere help please driving my nuts
  6. On my 1999 RSV oil is leaking around the top head gasket (no. 35 on the picture that I am going to try to post). I have been letting it run in the building for about 30 minutes while it is on the kickstand. I have been doing this every 2weeks. It is leaking on the same side the kickstand is on. I was wondering if I need to replace the gasket or take it off and clean it and put some silicone on it? I have already checked the bolts and they are tightened. I am not sure the picture will be big enough to see. Sorry. Thanks hairman
  7. I've been meaning to tell you.....thanks. I may not always agree with your posts but you sign off's (for lack of a better word) are really witty and I get a bang out of reading them. Wish I had your talent. Now don't go gettin' a big head or anything, just wanted to let you know that it's always fun to read them and that it's nice when someone can make us smile!!
  8. Well...I am officially excited now. Tomorrow we head out to Bismark ND. Then at 630 am Sunday we board our plane to California and head out on a leaky boat for a week long cruise. The ship is the Carnival Pride and we touch Cabo san something, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta (sp)? I write this to make all you stuck in this frozen waste land envious of course! We are going with another couple..some may have heard me talk of them...they ride Indians- Chief and a Scout. (when they can get them working right!) She is turning 40 while we are in the ocean and its also their 20th anniversary. He thought to surprise her with this little jaunt. She does not know yet but will find out tonight as we are going there for supper and last minute planning. This surprise has been in the works for a year now! And she suspects nothing! Even her work knows and have played along....kept her name on the schedule and everything. Gonna tip back some of those fruity drinks and try not to fall off the ship! Take care you parka clad people! At least for one week I can gloat!

    Gsx-r1000

My son traded his Honda VTX 1800 for this Friday. I rode it yesterday. Wow this thing is fast and really likes the curves, but I don't like the bent over ride with the head back. Too old for this but it was fun. http://www.suzukicycles.com/images/ProductImages/colorVariations/500/GSXR1000K8_matteBlack_000000.jpg
  10. I am looking at getting another helmet since my full face is getting to be 5 years old and the lining wore out. I prefer the full face all the time, but summer heat does get intense with stop and go traffic. So I clicked on a link on our website about this helmet. A little bit pricey but was wondering if any of you have seen or wore the helmet? Also, if I do get this, I am looking for a head set that that has slim boom mic, not flush mounted. The JM mics I have are way to big as far as I am concerned with this type of helmet. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/shark-evoline/dot/

    Mea Culpa

Anyone who rides a 50 mile round trip in moderately strong wind with a chill factor of less than 20 degrees ought to have their head examined.
  12. :soapbox:I'm gonna shoot myself!! What was a minor computer problem, screen orientation on the tablet would not change, is with the help of tech support now a diaster. Can't access e-mail, can't print, damaged, missing and corrupted files which can not be repaired or re-downloaded, programs shutting down just because, external keyboard intermittent, Aaaarrrggghhh!!!:bang head: Wish I could restore to an earlier point and undo this @&*%! The latest solution is to re-format!! :smash2: Oh, btw, here's how ....

    got it

found out how to upload pictures, but don't you just hate it when you don't know how you got there:bang head:
  14. Well, I got my Carbtune over the holidays and we had a really nice riding day last week. So I decided pull out the skoot, warm it up, sync the carbs and go for a ride. Alas, when I went to start it ...nothing. It would crank but not fire. I finally got one cylinder to fire so it would idle for a few seconds but that was it. I had bought a new battery in October, so I put it in just to make sure, but it cranks fine with about 12-12.5v during cranking. When I parked it last I had put Sea Foam in the tank, filled it up and rode it home to park it; that was about November 1. I'm hoping that the cursed 10% ethanol in MO isn't rearing it head, but that's what I suspect. Any thoughts? I'll load it up in the trailer and head over to the Yammy dealer to see what they think.

    Radiator

In the process of pulling the starter on my first gen, I found that the small nipple of the radiator was merely held in by JB weld, which I completely disdain, and when wiggled just a smidge fell clear out. After looking at some of the ebay prices, and trying to shop around for a used one, I took mine to the radiator shop and asked if it could be fixed. He said "absolutely, won't be a problem". I asked if he could flush and leak test it as well, and asked the expected price. Then he drooped his head and said, "Well, for something like that it is pretty expensive." I thought, "Oh hell" Then he said, "I feel like I am stealing from you, but the time is what you are paying for. I have to ask for thirty bucks." I said, "Well, a guy has to make his money."
  16. I don't know you and you don't know me....but, I just HAD to say thanks. Today I installed a headlight modulator and ran the wire for the new passing lamps I'll be installing (when they arrive:bang head:). Anyway.....The tech articles on splitting the fairing & gas tank removal were just awesome. Thanks again and hopefully one day our roads will cross!!
  17. As Promised, I now have an ad in the classifieds for a reasonably priced Steering Head Replacement Washer for the First Gens. Here is the link to the ad. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=1579 The price is $3.00 with shipping to the 48 US states. To be honest, I have no Idea what it would cost to ship to our friends way up north, but what ever it is I will only charge the actual shipping cost, nothing more. I also wanted to give my thanks to Lonestarmedic for sending me his washer so I could copy it. JB, your washer is on it's way back home, with some "friends" for your help! Steer Safe, Earl
  18. Thanks Goodness Well I boo-booed again and I am very sorry. Today we went for ride, actually heading down to Carl's with Rhonda, my mother in law, sister on law and 4 yr old niece. The fog was horrible, and we never made it. The fog was so bad at times it was tough to see the end of the hood. As I was driving south I was looking for the stop sign as I was familiar with the road, and by the time I saw the sign it was too late, car would not stop, and I entered the intersection. We collided with the another car. Our right front corner hit the left front of his car, and he ended up in a ditch which dropped about 5 feet, and I was spun around. Rhonda, my mother in law and myself were all put in ambulances and sent to the hospital for xrays. Rhonda hit her head on the side window and has a good goose egg on her head also pretty sore in the chest. Her sister also banged her head, not that bad but is also sore. Rhonda's mom has a sprained wrist, and some muscle aches as she is 70 yrs old, but you would never know it. I have a cracked rib and some sore muscles. MY niece got a nice teddy bear from the fireman and she is fine. Even the 4 people in the other car are okay. Thanks to Brick (Darryl and Rhonda) for coming to get us at the hospital and getting to the accident scene quickly to remove some of our valuables. And I am very glad no one was seriously hurt. Pics of my car attached and this is the one I got only 3 months ago and have managed over 12,000 km on it, dam I liked that car. Also one pic of the car we hit. BRad PS: And Swifty when offering my wife a place to stay safe, do you think she deserves more than the cot. Oh yah another bloody ticket for running a stop sign.
  19. Hi all I am looking for a venturedad hitch but lost his info. can anybody help? Thanks Chuck:bang head:
  20. This isn't about my scoot but I suppose it could apply. Seems I have a coolant leak at the head gasket just where the head meets the block at the right front of the engine. It's a V8 Dodge 5.2L. There's no coolant getting into the oil and doesn't appear to be any combustion gasses getting into the cooling system (yet). The leak is very slow. I tried a couple inexpensive (less than $15) "stop leak" products but that doesn't appear to work. Been reading about a product called "Thermagasket". I know anything like this is only going to be a "temporary" fix and I'll eventually have to replace the head gasket (which I can do myself) but my garage is full of other stuff including my scoot and I really would prefer to wait until warmer weather before tackling this. Has anyone on here had any experience with "Thermagasket" or other similar such products that you'd care to share? I'm hoping to at least temporarilly fix this leak but I find it a waste of time trying one product and then the next only to find they don't work...would rather try something that at least someone I know has had success with. Thanks
  21. I need some help, I was given a air compressor that had a burnt motor, I put a new 5hp motor on it, but when it would hit 35lbs in the tank, the back pressure would stop the motor,( probably what smoked the original motor) so I pull the head off of the pump, the head gasket is blown, all of the reed valves look good, I changed it out but same thing going on. so next I pull the check valve from the tank, ok, a small peice of junk is stuck in the valve, I clean it up, put all back together, thinking to my self that I now have a great Free compresser.... but nooooooo.... same thing happening:confused24: I have no clue what to check next, there is not much to these things, so I am at a loss... any Ideas?? Thanks!! PS... Free Air to any one that can help me out and get it working!! Kreg
  22. .........your sitting on the throne in the bathroom thinking about the ride you had today, you lean into the corner your thinking about and hit your head on the sink. .........you come to a stop and open the door and put your foot down. .........you have turned on the wipers, the turn signals and hit the horn trying to find the clutch and hand brake. ...........you start ducking all those big bugs hitting the windshield OR your hanging your head out the window trying to catch lunch! ..........you strap you tank bag on the hood of the car. .........you strap your saddle bags to the trunk of the car. . .........you just tried to split lanes between two very large trucks (ie. Cali ). .........you are driving with all your riding gear on. I'm sure you folks could come up with a few. KURT
  23. Hey all, Can anyone tell me the size of the steering head nut I need to loosen to adjust my steering head? Don's got a great write up in the tech section, but I apparently don't have a large enough open end wrench and I don't want to use channel locks and risk messing up the bolt head. Thanks for the help.
  24. Anyone have their tachometer move slowly mine just started and also my running/brake warning light is on now and all my lights work . Any ideas????:bang head:
  25. Can't find the topic. Didn't Harley have the same dia. gasket for sealing the head pipes? anyone have the part # .... Thanks Dave
