  1. Hello all, I just got a 88 1300 Venture Royale and well.. all the gears work fine.. but when I put it into 5th gear it makes noise like something is loose and bouncing around in the gearcase. Is there something common I should know about? or am I going to have to pull the engine apart and rebuild my transmission? I hope not. I just traded two good working hondas for this yamaha. I do have to admit .. this is one nice riding and handling bike.. I also couldnt get the cruise control to work either.. Shawn
  2. Just posted lots of gear for sale in the classifieds. Pants, jackets, vests, chaps. ignore the price of $2540 , I meant it to be $25-40 for the items. Posted in the riding gear section. Just cleaning out the closet. Shipping will be the actual cost from my house to yours. All gear in great shape! Thanks for looking!
  3. Picked up a whine from the rear of the bike from 55 to about 70. Suspect the pumpkin pinion gear nut may have backed off. Has anyone tighten this? What did you hold the ring gear with?? Dealer has ridden the bike and tech says 'I don't hear anything unusual'. If he doesn't want to tighten the nut, I'm not gonna make him. Too many other things he can hurt in the process. And as long as there aren't any parts involved, I'd rather do it myself. Even thinking of switching to a VMAX rear end. Lots of folks have been happy when they have switched.
  4. today being stupid I was hammering my 1st gen shifting to 2nd ( missed shift) and lot of grinding started bottom left of engine. right where driveshaft goes to out put shaft, no matter what gear. limped home last 5 miles. the more throttle the more grind. grinds when under even slite pressure. put it on center stand all gears grind. what did i do? going to start pulling wheel off and pull drive shaft what am i looking for. big time sick at my stomach
  5. Was out to Big Dude's (Mike) house today to look at his grinder. He pulled a holeshot and when he went to grab second gear, he thought he missed it. Went to 3rd and it was there. Started making a grinding sound by the middle gear area, harrdly pulling itself down the road. Muffinman had him pull the final drive and driveshaft, all looks good. We pulled the middle gear cover off, cannot feel anything through there. Pulled the swingarm off and removed the output half of the pinion gear (which I thought would be gone) and it looked perfect. Pulled the clutch and could not find anything there. turning the inner clutch plate produced no grinding sounds. Dropped the oil pan, no extra materials in there. Before we disassembled everything, I started it and tried it myself. WIth clutch pulled in, no noise. As soon as you try to put it in gear, the grinding starts. As long as it's in gear, it will grind. Will hardly pull itself, even with my scrawny butt on it! I'm thinking we may have to pull the motor and split the cases to see whats going on in there, but any other opinions will be investigated first. Dan
  6. Well, this one is a little different spin on the 1st gen starter problem. I have a 1986 VR which I've upgraded the starter wiring, put in new starter brushes, new solenoid, all done in 2006. This spring I put in a new regular lead acid battery. The starter was operating nicely and wasn't giving me any problems. As part of my spring mainenance, I adjusted the valves. I've been riding it a bit to work this spring, which is about 115KM round trip. So far about 3000 KM this season. I started to notice an oil leak on the left side, dropping from somewhere under where the clutch slave cylinder is. I checked the valve covers, and there was a hint of oil leakage, but nothing significant. So I washed the whole left side off with Varsol solvent, and rinsed it off with water. I went for a short ride with all the lower body parts off. When I got back to my garage, I noticed that the leak was really coming from the cover seal right around where the starter is located. Not from the starter o ring, but the left side case to main crank case gasket. So I pulled the left side case covers off. Front cover, and middle drive cover. When pulling the main cover off, the starter gear idler came out with the case. I cleaned up all the gasket surfaces. I didn't have a gasket, and I was going to try just using grey RTV silicone gasket cement. I checked out the starter idler gears, and put them back in, in what I think is the only way that they can really go in so that the gears fully mesh. The small gear can go on two ways, but in one position, the gears will only mesh on 1/2 of the gear faces. So I assembled everything. After sitting a couple of hours, I tightened up the screws a bit extra, and poured in some oil. Now when I started it, the starter turned the engine over very slowly. Just enough that my finely tuned machine started, but definitely NOT NORMAL. I thought it might be that the idler shaft might have gotten a bit dry with the solvent, so I let it sit and cool down, hoping that maybe some oil might seep into the case cover bearing surface. Still extremely slow. So has anyone else ever had this experience? Could the missing gasket cause the case to be tight enough to tighten up on the idler gear shaft which has to flote in the journals in the main case, and cover? Is this a hint about what causes a warm engine to give starting problems when the idler gears are tight? Is it possible to actually reverse the idler gear to drop the effective gear ratio between the Starter and the crank gear? Anyone have a spare engine appart that can check this? I'll probably pull it all apart tonight and see what I find. Maybe some extra silicone when into something it shouldn't. Appreciate any suggestions.
  7. I have been working on a 1989 Venture Royale with a lot of problems and I need some help on the transmission. When under medium to hard acceleration this VR pops out of second gear. Is the fix the same as on the MKI 83' to 85' VR's or is there a different problem? I haven't run into an MKII that has had tranny problems other than a slipping clutch. Can anyone please help me with this? Thanks in advance, Earl
  8. well, i always said when i grow up i want to be just like la.. i'm getting set up to hit the road. bought a tent and lantern. just a start. i'm going to start building a little trailer to haul my camping gear. can't afford all the motels. linda thinks i'm nuts and have oldtimers. i got this picture of me sitting among the trees at a campsite barbequing pork steaks , drinking beer and listening to 50's music on my satilite radio by myself. it don't get no better than that. she said i'm not going, i said you aren't invited. i'm just following my dream. going shopping again tomorrow for some more gear. going to try to get my stuff together for vogel. does this sound like oldtimers or what? you bet it does. don't have no one to leave anything to accept linda and my puppy. so i might as well have a good time. yahoo!
  9. Recent findings 1. They will make noise at low rpm and high electrical loads. Lights, radio, aux's "On" 2. Stators may appear to be ok visably but still bad. 3. If they are black on 1/3 to 2/3rds of the coils they are probably burnt out or going out. 4. The ohm reading (2.4) maybe OK as stated in the service manual but they still will not generated electricity. 5. The regulator/rectifier is probably more reliable than the stator. It has cooling fins and is in cooling air. 6. Make sure you reinstall the starter gears correctly, watch how they came out. 7. Have an extra stator cover gasket in case yours gets torn. Silicone RTV is not needed. 8. Make sure the gear selector arm is in the up position behind the cover before reinstalling. Use both washers, don't loose the circle clip. 9. You must remove the middle gear cover to get the stator cover off. 10. Look for leaks at the gear selector electrical switch, the clutch push rod and gear selector shaft seal while your in there. 11. Make sure all wires are covered, taped and will not get pinched when either cover is reinstalled. 12.At idle the voltmeter should not drop down to 12.0 volts unless the fan is on. It does have high current draw. Yes I've done it all wrong and had remove the stator cover 6-8 times now!!
  10. Hello Venture Riders. I need some help. I have looked in the service manual and cannot find the fix for this. I have a First Generation 1985 Venture Royale, 1200cc. My shift indicator only works in 4th and 5th gear. The display never drops below 4th gear. Is there an adjustment that I can do on this? If so where is it on the gear case or motor? Thanks in advance.
  11. what does it take to install a vmax drive to an 07 venture....can i just buy a complete assembly...or just a couple of gears......and how much is the cost for parts would the final 5th gear ratio with a vmax rear be higher or lower than the 4th gear ratio on a stock second gen i discovered on my recent trip that running my stock venture in 4th gear , even at 65-70 indicated ( uncorrected) , that my gas mileage varied only 1-2 mpg......and whenever i encountered an incline , the bike just pulled better, felt smoother, in 5th gear it always appears to be lugging...even though i know it isn't....which brings up my next question what is the engine rpm at 70 mph indicated (uncorrected) in 5th gear and 4th gear...stock 2nd gen..
  12. Hello all, new to this forum -- I own a 83 Venture Royale -- love the bike, but have ran into the famous secound gear problem. I need to know if there is a gear kit that can be ordered for this and where in canada is the best place to get these parts at a reasonable price. I live on the East Coast. thanks in advance for your help.
  13. I got stalled last week on the hyway : my ignition fuse blowed. My side stand relay does not work : I can start my stand down on first gear. I do not know where is my short circuit but when motor is warm and I am at fourth gear, motor start to misfire and if I dont slow down, it blow my ignition fuse. Any idea ? Happen to anyone ? Thank you ?
  14. In my continuing venture for gear to make MC camping easier, came across this site. The Blackwater short sleeve tight fit is currently on sale and they are offering an additional 10% discount. Five of these shirts can be packed in the space it takes to pack two regular T's. http://www.botachtactical.com/bltifitshshs.html
  15. With only 22k miles my 84 needs a stator. Anyone got a good used one or where I can get the best price for new one. And yes it is fried. New battery, good connections thruout. When I did 2nd gear it was black on one side. I have a spare regulator-rectifier and it does the same, no charge. Just hoping then.... Thanks
  16. wanted to thank all the folks that came to our meet. even though it rained you all made our weekend. the ride to herman yesterday and having you all over for barbeque made the whole thing worthwhile, and like i told alot of folks it got my butt in gear to get some much needed work done around here. linda and i had a great time being with all of you. really had a great group of people here. we love ya'all. bill and linda :clap2:
  17. i see there is lots of problems with 2nd gear but the one i just picked up says on the dash its in 1st gear and it really is pretty happy to be stuck in that gear. Has anyone ran into this before?
  18. Ok here goes. The 86 VR I just brought home a few days back has a minor oil leak. Minor; but still a leak and leaks can get worse. The leak is somewhere in behind and between the stator cover and the main gear cover. Isnt the stator gromet and isn't the main gear cover gasket; somewhere further in I believe. What is back in there that can leak oil? Can the slave cylinder leak oil; clutch rod???? Any help and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  19. A few weeks back I changed rear tires and noticed wear on the spines on ring gear. I thought about swaping ring gear and plate with a MK1 84 which I have on hand off a parts bike but noticed that bolt pattern is different. But my question is: Does any one know why I can't swap the whole pumpkin on my MK2 87 XVZ1300 with a 84 MK1 XVZ1200 pumpkin by unbolting from the drive shaft end from swing arm. Will they interchange without a problem.
  20. I got a new rear tire for my 87 xvz1300. before putting it back together I realized the splines on the wheel were shot and the splines on the outward plate aren't much better. I figured no problemo I've got one on the 84 xvz1200 parts bike that I'll just swap out. Guess what, the wheel spline gear would work but the differentials are differant. The outer spline plates have differant bolt patterns. So, now I'm in need of either an entire final gear drive differential or just the outer plate if anyone has one they've dissected already. (86 and Up 1st gen XVZ1300). If any one has got one laying around they don't need and don't mind giving a fellow member a hand send me a PM. let me know what you want for it.

  22. Any down side to starting up in first gear assuming you have the clutch in. Thanks From Mexico Nevada Max
  23. i've seen a few posts here talking about trailer hitch mounted racks. my question is, what kind of weights would you recommend limiting it to, and if anyone has built their own hitch, any caveats? i'm in college right now, and am taking alot of welding classes. I feel pretty confident about being able to fab a rack and trailer hitch up, but obviously, not having done it before, any tips would be hugged and loved and called george. I would like to make it out of aluminium, mostly to hold camping gear (cooler, tent, mostly light stuff) but i haven't priced out and cleared with the soon to be boss ( getting married on the 30th of may ) on what sort of welder is acceptable. I might have to settle for mild steel. thanks in advance, guys!
  24. Here are a couple pics of the piggy and trike. I think we are all done now *lol* Went for my first long ride today. and all I can say is why did I not do this 2 years ago? Handles like a dream.. also added my 14OZ's of RIDE-ON to each one of them new tires. Pushes around with total ease as well. Just gatta remember to keep it in gear when parked I promise I will not bother you with anymore pics I am done with this stage now it is time to ride and move on the the next project! Jeff

    Took A Ride This Weekend

Well this last weekend I got out my MRSV and went down to see my sister in Eugene, OR. Since I live in Vancouver, WA. it was a nice long ride. This was finally the chance to really check out my new vmax gears and my WarmGear ensamble. Going down their I had a brutal head wind, and just a few places of misting rain. I thought that was a great test for my heated gear, because I stayed nice and toasty all the way down. On the way back It rained like Noah was coming back, but at least I had a nice tail wind. The heated gear worked great both ways. It really kept me warm and comfortable. Let me tell you about those fantastic gears. I absolutely love my new gears. I feel that this is really the way this bike should have come from the factory. I had to always downshift when passing on the highway before the gears, but now, just a quick twist of the throttle and you are flat gettin around vehicles. It's almost scarey what the new gears do for the bike. Any way I just thought that some of you folks would like to know about the rear gears and heated WarmGear.
