  1. Got my used collector on today,,boy what fun! Went on easier than coming off. Leak tested and all is good, only thing I need now is gaskets for the mufflers, where's a good source for an un-employed individual such as me ????
  2. As I slowly get to the end of my restoration, I find another thing here or there that causes my project to slow down... I got the carb and ignition issues worked out! Replacing the diaphragms fixed the "lean" condition. Cleaning the plugs fixed the ignition issues as I had to use the enrichener to keep the engine running before fixing the carbs. However, I now noticed some very nice cracking in the rubber "half-moons" plugs on the valve cover gaskets. I also have noticed a little oil on the engine...not much, but enough to know that the valve cover gaskets are going. What parts do I need to replace when doing the gaskets? What components do I need to remove to access the valve covers? I already have ALL the plastic off. I will also be removing the carbs (again) soon to replace the carb mount boots (very tiny leak found). I've heard that 2nd Gen valve cover gaskets will work on 1st Gens. Is this accurate? Thanks in advance! WHCC
  3. If anybody is looking for valve cover gaskets there is a listing for them on ebay now for a fair price and cheap shipping. It's a Buy it Now for NOS and take as many as you want. There were three left a little bit ago. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200393189413&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Just FYI.
  4. Is there a carb rebuild kit for the first gens? Or does someone at least have a list with part numbers of all the gaskets, etc. that we need? thanx, Bill
  5. I was one of the first to jump on Condor's MAC muffler offer a few weeks ago. They arrived safe & sound & looked awesome in the box. I had to wait for the never-ending rains to finally move through, and MacGyver some impromptu gaskets as the previous owner (or at least one of the 5 previous owners) had used a metal reinfoced muffler tape in place of proper gaskets. I happened to mention that in my thanks to Condor, via a PM, and lo and behold, the man sends me gaskets ! From California all the way to Ontario ! Thanks again, Jack. I got them today, and had them installed in less than 20 minutes. I think they look world's better than the original stockers I had as they were a little beat up. Worse, they were full of deteriorated baffle pieces and sloshed like 30 pound maracas. The new MAC's sound incredible - it's actually a motorcycle now ! Not obnoxious, but a definite rumble, and I really, really like it. So, the prerequisite pics : I apologize if the quality isn't the greatest - I used a new software package tonight to resize these, and I think the sharpness degraded quite a bit. The first pic is the bike (obviously) with my other new baby, 2009 Dodge Ram Crew Cab 4x4 with the 390 HP 5.7L Hemi (very fun). The second shows a better pic of the muffler. Please ignore the big hack on the bikini panel on the right side of the bike as I am still burning about that (search threads using "pine cone"). Best of all, we finally have a week here that is 100% sunshine. It's just real cold in the morning (about 42 degrees F this morning), but that sure doesn't stop me. Thanks again, Jack !
  6. Just bought a collector for my 84 XVZ12. Looked up the exaust gaskets online for Yamaha origional. $20 each for the headers (4 needed) and $13 each for the mufflers (2 needed). Total $106 total plus tax. Seems a bit much for 6 metal rings. Just wondering if anyone knows of an aftermarket set available anywhere.
  7. Hey I'm going to teat out my old collector from my 84 which cracked at the out pipe and replace it with the good one from my old 83...( glad I kept it). Do i need to replace all the gaskets... Those darn things are expensive.. Rick at buckeye quoted 148.00 for eight of them. Can the old ones be reused? Clay
  8. Well i started off good, finnaly putting new valve cover gaskets on(lots of fun there),cleaning all the grease and grime from the old leaky gaskets off, and doing a fresh oil and filter change all ready for the summer. Two days later on my way home from work today bikes running great doing about 70 down the freeway in the end of rush hour traffic and i get a loud mettalic crunch and what sounds like metals bouncing down the road behind me. the rear tire starts to lock up, pull the clutch in and it coasts smooth to the shoulder in about the busiest spot on the freeway of course. out it in neutral bike idles perfect look underneath and see the last of my oil pouring onto the blacktop. got a trailer and she sits in the garge now. hopefully next week i can start looking into it, i'll be gone all weekend.my only thoughts right now are it must be in the transmission, which means pulling the motor, more fun. hopefully no crackes in the housing but a short supply of parts money with a kid on the way means i doubt i'll get it back on the road anytime soon.
  9. Need to replace the exhaust gaskets on both rear cylinders (someone took the old ones off and didn't replace them. No wonder there's a leak) I noticed the manifold slips into the bracket bolted to the cylinder so I take it I have to drop the manifold to pull it out to get the gaskets in place? I have the shop manual printed out but seems the one page that shows removal is corrupted in the PDF file (figures) So any advice on doing this?
  10. Was wondering if the valve cover gaskets on my 98 RSTD could be re used. The bike has about 35k on it and upon inspecting them the look really in good shape. If I have to purchase can someone give me a good sight to buy from?

    gasket theory

I notice that my engine side cover gaskets last about 30,000 miles (2 seasons) and then they start seeping. I figure that it should be better. Since those gaskets are paper thin, wouldn't putting 2 on at one time work better, last longer? Is there someone who has another theory?(...besides not driving my bike like it was meant to be.)
  12. anyone got any step by steps on changing those leaky valve cover gaskets on my 84
  13. Do the carb bowl gaskets go bad often? Are they o-rings? If so, can they be replaced with bearing-and-seal-store o-rings? Is Buna rubber OK for this use - will it stand up to fuel exposure? Or do I need to get factory ones from Yammy? Suggestions please! Thanks, Jeremy

    recalls

took the 07 in today for service today and some warranty work on the boot that is between the cab and intake. They told me there was 2 recalls on my bike 1. head gaskets 2. plate under trunk. has anyone heard anything about these recalls.
  15. Is anyone here running the Baron 4-2-4 Nasty Boy Slip-On pipes on their Venture? If so.......What did you use for a gasket where the pipes actually slip on the exhaust pipe? I have hunted high and low and cannot find, or even determine, if gaskets are needed for these Slip On pipes. Thanks for any info/responses. Regards...........Boomer
  16. ok so as many of you know i've had terrible MPG and power issues with my 84 venture royale. originaly thought it was my carb being gummed up or needing a good sync. well the otherday I was just about pulling my hair out trying to get the carbs synced. No matter how much I turned the screws the back 2 carbs always had may more suction then the front two carbs. I found the back 2 exhaust pipes could move freely just by my hand this leads me to believe my exhaust gaskets are none existant at this point. my question is i've heard that the gaskets are very expensive if you buy from the dealer, is there a good source to purchase these or anyone know of what material they are made from and if it would be cheaper to make my own? I'd love to get this bike running right i can't afford the MPG i'm getting with it right now. any help is greatly appreciated and desperatly needed.
  17. I went to one of the local dealers today as I have a small leak from my valve covers on my 85 1st gen. It leaves a puddle the size of a quarter every time i stop and it drives me nuts! I almost fell over when the parts guy said that the gaskets were 38 bucks each! thats gonna cost me 76 bucks to do both sides. I think I gotta check around but I thought I would ask in here to see what you guys are paying for valve cover gaskets. thanks Brian:cool10:
  18. Well today I managed to put my wheels back on the bike after getting new rubber last weekend. Due to the position of the bike on the lift I could not replace my rear shock links with the shorter leveling links. So I have to do that another day. Putting the wheels back on wasn't too hard (remember this is my first time doing this work). Black Owl stopped over and I recruited him as my second pair of hands to help out a bit. I also bought stock slip-ons so I can replace my BUB's. Wouldn't you know it I need muffler gaskets. The BUBs didn't use gaskets. The stock Yamaha's do. No one in town is open the rest of th weekend. Drats. I was hoping to get it done and put back together today. Wanna bet no shop in town will have these in stock and I will have to order them in on a slow boat from Japan. I WANNA RIDE!!
  19. Can the copper exhaust gaskets be reused? I thought I saw somewhere on here a thread about reusing copper washers, etc but you have to anneal them first. Of course, I can't find the thread now. Anyone have any experience with this? The story is that I had to tear the exhaust apart on my 84 to repair a hole in one of the headers. The old gaskets look to be in good shape so I figured I'd try to reuse them if possible. Thanks!
  20. I know this is probably the wrong place to post this butttttttttttt, it has alot of people viewing! Can anyone tell me if you torque the valve cover bolts when replacing the valve cover gaskets and if so what would it be? Thanks very much:confused24: It is for a 89 VR
  21. I need to replace my valve cover gaskets on my 89. Does anyone have a set they want to get rid of or what is a good website for parts, thanks
  22. I've got an exhaust leak somewhere on my '84 Venture. I can hear it, but can't pin down where it is coming from. With winter upon us, I'm going to remove the system and take a look. My question is, what parts of the system have gaskets that will need to be replaced? Also, has anyone solved a nuissance leak like this on their Venture? Thanx, Skooter
  23. Got about 60k miles on the bike, a vague knock started developing. Wishful thinking it could be exhaust gaskets, sucked a little atf & confirmed the leak. After replacing the gaskets on the # 1 & 3 cyl, engine became quieter but the dreaded knock remained. The knock initially seemed to be coming from either the #3 cyl or clutch basket area. Also noticed the idle became a little rough and a fine vibration can be felt on the right footpeg. Checked carb synch and they were. Pulling the clutch in didnt change the noise. Ultimately I shorted out the cylinders and confirmed the knock came from the #3 cylinder. Rod knock. I'm wondering if it is possible to replace the bearing without the pulling the engine out of the bike? How much incidental parts are involved asidede from the gaskets and bearings? Or are we talking about a complete A-Z rebuild Any input would be appreciated.
  24. While on a recent tour of the northern United States I experienced a problem that made me think it is time for a carb overhaul or re-build. I have a 1990 VR with 82K miles on it. The question I have is: Is there a carburetor rebuild kit available for these carbs ? If so, where ? This would be a kit containing gaskets, needles, seats, etc. I see some good data on the tech bulletin board about rebuilding the carbs but no mention of where to get parts or if a kit is available. Thanks for the help Red Baron
  25. what a miserable job. As if getting the covers out is not bad enough, trying to but them back in and aim for the gaskets can make a grown man cry. Combine that with some tremendous back pain when bending over and it takes you most of the day. Good news is that the engine is perfectly clean inside after 70k miles of Yamalube 20W40 and all valve gaps are well within specifications. Well, I ran myself out of steam, going to bed early. Can't wait to get up to Ft Collins. Klaus
