  1. I sure hope it's just a fuel filter, or a clogged line, but here's the issue... 7:30am Yesterday morning, on the way to work, I started running out of gas, and felt the usual lack of power. Switched to reserve, and all was well. I wish I had known my low-fuel light didn't work. Stopped & got a full tank at a known-good station (where I fill up the cage every week) and continued another 20 miles to work. 4:30pm I get off work, hop on the bike, start it up, wait about 2 mins for it to warm up, and hit the road... Firing on 2 cylinders. I'll tell ya', this fat V-4 ran like a Honda Rebel 250 with a fat girl on the back. Couldn't break 50mph! It seems like the 2 cylinders on the left side of the motor are maybe starving for gas? They seem to run when I'm idling (pipes getting hot at the same time) but when I twist the throttle more than 1/2 inch the dang thing stops running on the left side... Pop here, pop there... Plugs are good, and they are firing, so I'm pretty sure it's a fuel delivery issue. My oil doesn't smell like gas either. So, not to sound like a complete mechanical idiot, but I have a few questions 1) Where is the fuel filter on a 97 Royal Star? 2) I've taken the tank off before, and only remember 4 bolts (2 near saddle, 1 on each side near forks) Am I forgetting something? 3) After I replace the fuel filter, and verify fuel lines are clear, who wants to come clean my carbs???
  2. Dont understand this at all, it will idel but when you give it the gas it just bogs down Put the beather back on and it is fine
  3. So this morning, I decided to take the scoot to work... (47° & overcast was good enough for me) 1/2 way through my 40 mile trek... She's runnin outta gas. No gas light.... Strange. Flip to reserve, and carry on to the gas station. Pop the gas cap and see something I can't believe I've never noticed... scaly rust... JB Weld...Ugh! I don't know how I missed it until now (i'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I am always too busy staring at my paint) but I can't deal with a corroding fuel neck/tank. SO- Looks like I'll be ordering some new Alsa paints when the weather warms up and dries out. Anyonw know where I can find a tank, side covers, and fenders for my 97 Royal Star? I would just repaint them, but getting the pinstriping and umpteen coats of clear off just won't be worth it. Besides, I think I want to paint it with the Lava paint from Alsa... I'm willing to part with my paint set (tank, fenders, side covers) if someone wants them.
  4. i was wondering if anyone here had an extra center cover forover the battery and gas tank.. mainly need the gas door, but the whole piece would be better.. for an 86 venture.. 83 will also fit...
  5. http://www.brewracingframes.com/id75.htm - if you only read ONE post today, make it this one. we use this stuff like water, EVERY DAY!, it's a miracle no one in our shop has been killed by phosgene gas. just jt
  6. My buddy bough a a 72 CB 500 with a 550 engine and a Kawasaki front end. He wants to learn how to ride. It's been sitting for four years with half a tank full of gas. First we have to clean out the gas tank, then we're gonna sandblast the carbs. Then were going to clean/empty the brake lines out, I checked and it was empty, but there was just a little in the cylinder still. Then, before we even try to get it running, im going to drop the oil, and get new spark plugs. And if all else goes right, a fresh new paint job He spent $400 on this bike, so hopefully we can get it running right!
  7. Sometimes (but not aways) I have a hard time getting the gas cap off my 99 RSV. I have to turn the key and then try to grip the cap with the other hand while turning the key to get it to release. The bib around the opening seems to keep the cap from going down all the way, but not sure. Any ideas would be helpful.
  8. Does any one know the differences, if any, between the 26H(1983?) and 41R(1984-89?) models of the CDI/TDI. I put a used 26H in my 1986-1300 which had a broken 41R in it and it seems to work ok now but I think my gas mileage might have dropped?? Anyone got info? Gerry
  9. Here is a link to a recall on the new HD gas tank mounts. Just in case anyone has switched over to the other side. LOL HD Recall Gas Tank Mount Spotsy
  10. Really I do! I can't think of a #@^* thing I would rather be doing then working on the furnace at 1:00 AM in the morning. It did not act like a bad thermocouple. The pilot light would stay on and light the burner one time. After the burner shut off it blew the pilot out. I noticed the pilot was low but the pilot adj would not increase gas flow. So for the second time tonight I removed the gas valve and burner assembly. I cleaned the pilot orfice and adjusted the thermocouple position. Just got it back together and fired it up. It's coffee break time while I wait and see. That old furnace is 30 years old. I hate to replace it. It runs like a first gen just needs some tlc once in a while.
  11. I am not sure if see foam is or can be used as a gas stabilizer. If it can then I guess that would be the "Thing" to use when winterizing my scoot. If not, I would think any stabilizer from Canadian Tire would work right?
  12. Says in the specs that it does not include Where Am I which allows you to find closest hospitals, police stations, gas stations, etc.... Can't believe something that cost so much back in the day you wouldn't be able to find a gas station if you needed to. It might not be part of Where Am I, but I would think you could find a gas station. Anyone with these models confirm the information? Thanks
  13. OK....this is one of those things that I don't WANT to admit but it might help somebody else so I guess I will. I've been finishing up all the little things that I wanted to do to the bike before leaving for Fort Collins. Yesterday I changed the oil, changed the differential oil, etc. I got the Flanders bar, clutch lines, throttle cables, front brake lines, etc. all changed over the past couple of weeks but had decided to wait on changing the rear SS brake line after getting back. This morning I decided that I was just being lazy so I went ahead and changed it and got the rear brake bled and that is done. Then I decided to take if for a little ride. I still hadn't double checked the calibration of the Speedohealer so I found a road with mileage markers, got up to 60 MPH, hit the cruise and NOTHING. The set light came on but it would not engage. So....I went ahead and checked the Speedohealer without using the cruise. It was dead on at 7 1/2% error calibration so that is good. Got home and decided to work on the cruise. I figured it had to be in the throttle cable box under the gas tank. That's the only thing I had messed with that would screw up the cruise. So I pulled the seat, gas tank, etc. and opened up the throttle box. There was a spring that I wasn't sure how it was supposed to go when I put it back together so I was pretty sure that was the problem. Really couldn't tell how it should go and there is no drawing of it in the manual so I changed it and figured I had it right. I put the gas tank, seat, all that junk back on and went for another ride. STILL no cruise. So...got home and pulled the seat, gas tank, etc. again and opened up the throttle box a second time. This time it was as obvious as it could be. I had the cable from the cruise actuator wrapped around the wrong direction. Stupid mistake as it's fairly obvious which way it should go. So, if you change out your cables, make sure you wrap the cruise cable the right direction. I hate to admit to such a dumb mistake but if it saves somebody else from making it, then I guess it's OK.
  14. Was having problem with #3 not firing. I checked for spark, plug was good but replaced anyway, cleaned all plug wire caps and check resistance, all no help. While bike was idleing I adjusted the sync screw for 3 and 4 a little bit each way, no help. ( I have a carbune ordered) I let bike sit a day, bolted tank back up and was going to run it that way for the weekend. When I startedthe bike, it's running worse. ONly on 2 cylinders now. #3 is now firing. # 1 and 4 are not. Any thoughts? Ok, so after more troubleshooting here's what I've found. Pulled the air box, hooked up a funnel with gas, kept bike running, there is gas going into all carbs when running, fuel pump is working., So, must be electrical
  15. I have a 2 cycle leaf blower that I haven't run in 2 years - it starts just fine but wants to shut down after a few minutes - perhaps Carb cleaner ?? it has fresh gas mixture with some of the OLD gas. screwed up didn't I ??
  16. 1986 Venture started great in warmer weather on little to no choke. As time went on it got harder to start. Now it "might" start after turning over for a minute or two and ocassionally backfiring with various choke settings in the start process and eventually starts with no choke. It seems to bog down quit a bit, rpm wise, when choke or gas is used while engine cranks. No gas or choke it cranks quit a bit faster. Once it has finally started it will then re-start instantly, everytime, with maybe one or two turns, all day long, works great, lots of power and with excellent gas mileage. Sit for 12 hours overnight and back to hard start problems. New battery is in top condition and cranks un-choked motor over quickly. New plugs. Tried spraying starter fluid (ether) in carbs after removing air filter which had absolutely no effect. I am suspecting the CDI perhaps ????????? Gerry
  17. i bet it will get 500 mpg http://www.moyermade.com/chevyV8.html
  18. Does any one leave there gas line open w/gas saver in it or do you drain the gas out of carb Ron
  19. I have noticed a gas smell on my 84 Venture Royale and couldn;t figure out where it was coming from. I did notice that under the seat it looked like four overflow tubes? and while the bike was in idle gas was dripping from one of them? ANy ideas what could be causing that? I would sure appreciate any insight. thanks Rick
  20. My 1989 Venture Royale seems to be using alot more gas than it should. It seems that I am only getting about 18-20 in town, and 23-25 on the interstate. I dont ride hard, or fast. I have also noticed that even after sitting over night, with cool air temps down in the low 50's to upper 40's I do not have to choke the bike to start it in the mornings. I do not mind not having to choke the bike, but I do want to improve the fuel milage. Any help with this issue would be great. Oh and there is a rattle in the exhaust chamber under the bike. I dont know if that would have any effect on the fuel consumption, but I figured I would include it. Thanks alot!
  21. I guess Hondas coming out with a new V4 motor http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/2wheeltuesday/a47519bf40f691d9527c6678c627391b http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/2wheeltuesday/80179491dbb16f3caf173d078525f5fa http://feelv4.com/en_GB/pages/mainpage/nointro/cid:001/gap:003/lm:gb1/af:a01/ap:h01/cr:E03/ln:en_GB http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/26/spy-shots-new-honda-v4-motorcycle-caught-testing/ http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/2wheeltuesday/a47519bf40f691d9527c6678c627391b I guess it will be 200 hp V4 1200 cc motor and have cylinder shut off for better gas mileage what a concept. Boy that would be nice in a 1st Gen package. At least some manufacture is thinking ahead.
  22. Had bike serviced and now a light flashed on for a blip and disappeared and I can't find which it is. Lost my manual and not sure it tells you location of lights anyway. Sitting on bike its the furthest left and bottom. It's red but it doesn't come on when you turn the key on. I was really in the gas when it came on so maybe it's to let you know your about to go airborne? Any help is appreciated. 07 RSV by the way.
  23. Ive develpoed a gas leak. Noticed it today when I was under the bike listening to the collector rattle anf trying to decide what to do with that. The collector can wait. What I discovered was a gas leak at first what looked like it was fluid leaking from the rear shock. Pulled off the right side abs cover and can see the fuel leaking from somewhere above the rear shock and then running down the shock. Cant see where it is coming from though. It only leaks when the motor is running. Not sure if it leaks when the key is on but the engine is not running I will go check and edit the post as soon as I can. Anmy idea where to start or what will be the easiest way to get in there and see . Hopefully I can do this myself as it will have to sit if it needs to go to the shop. mONEY IS TIGHT WRIGHT NOW. aNY IDES WILL BE WELCOMED AND FOLLOWED UP. tHANKS IN ADVANCE, dAVID
  24. new 09 RSV-S with about 1000 miles on it. I will write up my first impressions in a later post but first I have this question. My gas cap and gas tank get to the point of being so hot it would almost burn my hand. is this the way they are?? does not seem right! I am not talking about it setting in the sun, I am talking about when driving it either back roads (not stop and go but hills and twisties) or in town stop and go. air temp above 90 degrees F. Thanks Jerry
  25. Put diaphams and slides in this newly aquired 1986. Fresh gas and it fires right up. Will only run with the choke on until fully warm. Then will idle nice (after sync) but coughs and backfires when I give it gas. Any ideas for me to check out when I work on it again tomorrow?
