  1. I need some help figuring out what is wrong with my bike before I decide to dig deep into it. I have an '86 venture that has 74 K miles and has an unknown history for most of those miles. Here are some recent repairs: new plugs 1/2 yr ago, new cables & caps this year, new diaphragms last year, carbs synced last fall. My scoot has been underpowered for some time and is getting worse. Tonight I was out looking trying to rule some obvious things out. One thing that is new and significant is that I found a small amount of emulsified oil and what appears to be radiator fluid in the air box (see picture). It seems that it is coming from the engine breather tube that is feed back in to the air box. After the engine is warm you can see a steady stream of smoke/vapor coming out of this tube in the air box. I also do not know what that chamber does that is mounted between the "V", it appears to have both cooling and the engine breather tube. I can't seem to find good documentation on this thing . . . So . . . Do I have a blown head gasket, needs a valve job, or could this be caused by something else?? This site is awesome and very friendly! Thanks for your help! Mike
  2. I'm gathering information to help my uncle get his '83 1200 Venture Royale running. He bought it sight-unseen. It has 65,000 miles on it, and he doesn't know when it ran last. I know very little about Yammy's, only what I've been able to find in the forums so far. His service manual is on it's way. We'll learn much more then. My husband will be helping as well. The trick in helping to work on it is that we live three hours apart. We've got three days over Mem Day weekend. Can we get enough done for it to run in three days? We'll find out. We'll drain the carb bowls. We know not to use carb cleaner. We'll drain the fuel tank and clean it, and check to make sure the petcock isn't leaking. We'll run Seafoam through with the first tank of fresh gas. Do we need to plan to replace all the fuel lines? Do they degrade on the interior of the lines like old Wings do? We'll replace the fuel filter, wherever that is. We'll drain the coolant and replace it with fresh red coolant mixture. Should we pull the radiator? Should we replace the hoses and thermostat then? Does the engine use a timing chain? It'd be nice not to worry about timing belts. We'll change the oil and filter. We'll put the bike on the center stand and turn the rear wheel to see if the engine turns. Hope it does, don't know what to do if it doesn't. We'll likely pull the rear wheel to grease the spline. The one on our Wing was dry, so I'm assuming the Venture's will probably be dry too. We'll make sure the rear end has enough diff oil in it. The beast IS shaft-driven, isn't it? What do we do if second gear isn't working any more? Can I whine if we have to mess with the transmission? Do we add transmission fluid? How do we check that? I hope that's in the manual. Bound to be. We'll check the brakes and fluid. We'll replace the battery. He said the tires don't look dry rotted. We'll check them again really well. I think the shocks are air adjustable. I don't really know what that means, not having that sort of shocks on any of our bikes. We'll need to find out if they can be re-pumped-up and how to do that. They kind of bottom out when he sits in the saddle. Is the fuel tank under the seat? It looked like it when I saw the bike. How's the center of gravity? I worry about the weight of the bike for him. That sucker's HEAVY. It's a good hundred pounds heavier than my Wing, and the Wing's flat out cumbersome. He just want's to get running enough for him to ride it, then think about cosmetic stuff later. Did I miss any initial must-do's? Is this the right forum? I don't know the generations. I thought maybe it's a second gen because it's not the inline four engine.
  3. I want to know if a 1986 venture 1300cc engine can go in a 1984 venture 1200cc bike. I found one for a great price, and thinking of getting it as a back up engine. Thanks
  4. We had a gorgeous day here yesterday for April about 27 c and not much wind cruising around town through the parks and happened on a police spot check. Got pulled into the check lane, had an officer walk up and ask me to shut the engine off and give him my registration and DL. No probs i kll the engine , put the kick stand down and get my wallet to pull out my docs while the LEO is checking my lights, signals, brakes etc. meanwhile I am trying to balance my docs and wallet while doing this stuff he is asking. Finally we get done with the check he hands everything back to me, i put my wallet away, get set to go flip up the stand and nothing. I tried everything thought my lights were on bright and got a bad switch, or the switch on the kick stand was shot but no go. Meanwhile theres cars behind me in the lane so I have to push my ride off to the side to try to figure out what was wrong. I checked everything from top to bottom and was ready to call a tow company when I remembered what I had read in this forum about the KILL switch and how some guys have forgotten to turn it back on. Well, thats me, was I embarrassed. Usually i let the switch for the kick stand kill the engine so i know that the stand is down and locked before I tilt the bike one its side, but my routine got messed up when I killed it with the switch. AARRGGHHH! so frustrating when you have a brain fart! Brian :cool10:
  5. When stopped or just taking off my engine just stops like you turned the key off. It starts back up as soon as you hit the starter. I have had a hiccup before where it is momentary, but yesterday it would completely die, once while pulling out from a side street, which could have been serious if there had been traffic. I've checked connectors and switches for corrosion or just being loose. The relays in the system have voltage as they are supposed too. The radio nor none of the other accessories seem to lose power when this happens. I'm at a loss.
  6. I am in need of a 2nd generation (1999 to 2008) engine guard for the right side that is NOT bent (like mine!) without having to pay the new price. Any one have one available? You can send me private email or post here. Thanks!
  7. Just in case you all were worried about little olde me, as two members who emailed me today were, Scamper is back to her old normal self with a little more life than usual. This maybe due to the fact that she's been sitting since mid November or due to the fact that she now has been babied and caressed beyound believe. Second gear was fixed, carbs cleaned but not rebuilt, engine cleaned out thoroughly, new oil and filter, tender loving care in many adjustments,,, tightened engine mounts solidly, new plugs (non-risistor type) maybe not a good idea), so far lots of noise,,,, new Avon on the back, new pads all the way around, some new bearings, seals and clutch basket, (I'll not say why), clutch installed according to book instructions, which means that you put the basket in first, then the thrust washer, then the boss, after which is the locking ring and finally the nut. Yea I know, the thrust washer needs to be in the right place, you can't just put it somewhere and hope it goes to where it should be,,,, doctors have it much easier, they can just throw it all back and it will striaghten itself out LOL. So last night about 11:45,, 2 scoots were headed for Burford for a quick test run and soo far everything checks out super. Boy what a good feeling. Thanks all for the help and input and concern,,,,,,,,,,,,,,we're on the road again........................... Carl
  8. I am finally about to reinstall my engine. Please don't ask what I was doing. I am embarassed enough and here's another embarrassing thing. But my question is that the motor mounts have a "D" shape at the ends. My '86-'87 OEM manual does not specify the exact way these should face. The OEM factory manual has pictures of the engine in various stages of disassembly. But I am not sure if I shoud go by these pictures? And looking at the long term wear on them. I can figure out the rear mounts. But the front...I am not so sure:confused24:. So I either need pics from someone or maybe someone can describe which direction the flat side of the "D" should be facing on one side. Then I can do the same on the other. One more thing....I am putting the engine in SUNDAY 4/6. email me if you can or reply here. I will check before I start @2pm EDT. ..email jsmthefix@optimum.net
  9. Hi all, I really tore into it and I have most of the body parts painted. Just have the 2 bags bottoms to do today, and I have them done. Not perfect but good enough for the woman I go out with. I was looking at the side vents for the engine covers. They aren't really bad, but not perfect, and somewhere, I think here I saw that someone had made some smoked acrylic windows to replace them. Does anyone know the thread? I will post pics when IO get it together. D
  10. Would anyone know a good way to clean an engine without damaging the finish on the aluminum. Which I personally have done in the past. I have an '89 Venture Royale which can use a good cleaning. Thanks in advance, Steve
  11. so ... the engine guard size must be larger than 1" diameter. I ordered a set of Kuryakan highway pegs...with 1 inch mounts. Now what? can I use them any way, and just tighten them down as far as they go?
  12. Anybody have any tips on how to get more power out of a '99 Tour Deluxe? And can a VMax engine go in these bikes? Thanks

    "Crunching" noise

I have a 2007 RSV with about 3500 miles on it. A short time ago, it began making a light crunching noise as I cruise up to a stop sign. I don't know if it does it at speed or not because the engine noise drowns it out. Any one else hear of this? Thanks a lot, Carl
  14. Just before I parked the bike for the winter I went to start it. It cranked about 1/4 of a rev, there was metal breaking sound and what sounded like a spring or something under tension releasing. Push the starter button now and nothing happens accept the starter trying... dead electrical load. The engine will not spin over. Where do I start looking and testing? My thought was to pull the left side center cover and try to turn the engine crank over with a socket and breaker bar. I'm hoping to eliminate a broken valve I think. If that proves to be good, is there something in the starter gear train I should then dig into. TIA
  15. Here is some information on the new engine that will be used in the '09 model VMAX. It makes me drool to think of this power plant in a new Venture. http://www.starvmax.com/News/V-Max-News/Inside-the-Next-Generation-VMax.html
  16. Harleys have always been known by their cylinder head configuration: The Pan Head The Shovel Head The Knuckle Head And of course the Block Head, you haven't heard of the block head??? Well maybe you know it by a different name.... The EVO, Give me a break the EVO was made by saturn and you had to plug it in every night, the latest incarnation of the Harley engine is what it looks like,, a "BLOCK HEAD". This really irritates the Harley rider that has dropped 20k + for his new dream bike and it is known as a "Block Head" so next time your Harley friends get on your nerves or you just want to watch them get indignate, comment on how much you like that new Block Head engine design Or how the Block head engine reminds you of the Pan Head design but uglier Just my little bit of insight to brighten your day:bighug:
  17. I'm doing some work on a 97 Ford F-150 pick up, two wheel drive, with 4.6 Liter V8 Triton Engine. Can anybody tell me the Location in the vehical of the Engine, ECU unit. I can't find it. ?? Any help much appreciated. Thanks
  18. My 87 Venture Royale had over 90,000 miles on it and recently developed a starter clutch problem which prevented starter from engageing with flywheel. I had already managed to get through last summer living with a low compression problem on one cylinder and knew I was facing a valve clearance proceedure and possibly other problems that would require major engine work. Considering that and the mileage I was pleased to be able to snag a very low mileage 1990 motor from one of my favorite ebay sellers who is also a VenturRider member (HessforLess), for what I thought was a great price. Since I resigned myself to an engine change out I decided to go ahead and completely restore the whole bike by taking the paint job up a few notches by unleashing my artistic nature by adding two color metalflake 3 dimensional shade variation ghost flames and Dragonslayer theme artwork Windsheild etching and Airbrush art on Gas tank cover. I also resolved myself to fixing all other known problems not already addressed in the process, mainly carberation. The new diaphrams for which cost me more than the whole engine. The details of the foregoing I'll post on seperate threads. But the subject of this thread is dressing out the motor. Having received the motor I decided to detail it's appearence before installing while it was still on the bench and easier to work with. The few things I did made a world of difference and the end result was so dramatic it blew me away enough to inspire me to post on this forum. CLEANING: The first thing I did was completly degrease and clean every speck of grim off every external suface on the motor. This I did by using a biodegradeable degreasing agent, an assortment of soft bristle brushes down to que-tip size which enabled me to get into every crack and crevice. Soaking, brushing, wiping, rinsing , air blowing dry over and over untill I was satisfied. This took some time but I was fortunate enough to have an idle helper available that did most of the grunt work under close supervision. The organic degreasers are slower than petroleum based solvents and other harsh chemicals that are available. But I planned on painting the engine block and my past experience has been that the chemical solvents frequently are not compatible with paint chemicals causing the paint to bubble and blister on application. Using biodegradeable degreaser and rinsing thoughly with warm water, (carefully applied protecting Intake manifolds and any other openings which would allow water inside motor), the paint problem is eliminated. PAINTING I had used in the past and decided to use on this project a product made by Dupli-Color made especially for engine blocks. The paint is in aerosol cans and is called High Heat and is rated up to 1200 degrees F. It comes in several colors as well as a clear final coat for extra protection. I choose what they call chrome. It is shinny silver when color is applied but when the color coat is covered with the clear coat it turns from shinny chrome color to aluminum color which is about the same as the original Yamaha block color. The paint has a ceramic base and when the paint is cured it has a hard shinny finish that does seem like ceramic coating. The paint covers well and applies easily for a smooth even finish. The key is to be easy on the trigger of the can because a small squirt covers alot and if your trigger finger is too heavy you'll end up over loading the paint and making a mess of it. It dries quickly and spot touch up blends in well leaving no trace. POLISHING I've always hated the varnish coating Yamaha puts on the side covers and valve covers for protection. I've not seen a 1st gen yet where the varnish was not weathered and in a lot of cases completely broken down allowing corrosion and oxidation of metal alloy surfaces. No wonder Yamaha covered up the motor with all those fiberglass body pieces and side covers. I have attempted on several occasions to wax, buff, polish or chemically remove the varnish film with marginal if any success for all the time and elbow grease expended. This time I decided to remove the covers and take them down the street to the local chromer, ( Pro Chrome and Polishing, Scottdale, Ga.) who happens to be owned and operated by Gary a friend of mine. SIDE NOTE: Gary seemed unusally joyful during this transaction which was somewhat uncharacteristic of his normal gruff old biker dude demeanor. Evidently his new joyfull:bighug:attitude is a result of closing a deal with the Discovery Channel where they are developing a new biker motorhead series "Drag Bike Racing for Pinks" which I understand will be on the air in near future. Evidently the discovery channel needed a new bike show to fill the void when Paul Jr. & Sr. Jumbed over to the learning Channel. I volunteered my services as a roadie when I picked up the covers, but I don't think he heard me up there on Cloud Nine. Polishing Continued: I hate to credit his gleeful state for the results on the covers because I know he does good work anyway. But, I must say that when I opened the box to inspect the covers The descriptive word and phrase that I must have repeated over and over was WOW, What a difference that made I could not have been more pleased with the results. Gary had acid dipped the covers to clean and disolve varnish film, Buffed them using the right stuff and whatever other trick of the trade he used on them it made a huge difference on the look of the motor. I dont know if you can tell in the photo since the reflection of the flash distorts the effect. But, take my word for it looks great. The cost was $175.00 for the polishing work and about $30.00 for the side cover gaskets. This does not include new valve cover gaskets which I have not bought yet. I just could not swallow the $30.00 a piece Yamaha wants for Gaskets. So now I'm looking for a more reasonable after market dealer. If anyone knows of a better source Please share. Screw Yamaha. I'm betting that when she gets put all back together with the LED Lighting, colored spark plg wires, wireing and cable sleaves and other details I've added I'll be throwing those side covers awayto show off the motor. Well.... Maybe not since I've just put so much time, effort and expense painting them. But, I am considering modifying them to flip on and off when parked at Bike night or other bike event to show off the motor. I thought maybe I could hinge them and rig a mechanism to flip them up like the doors on the old Gull Wing Porsch. Or better yet a little motor to slide them back out of the way between the saddle bags and the rear tire, like a motorized pocket door. I don't know maybe I'll put some more thought into it.
  19. Well Brad its time to move on to another Brand of Motorcycle..You say the 1999 is a Bad Year so is the 2000, to 2008 They are the same scoot, same engine etc ........ just the colour change is different:rotfl:
  20. I've got an 89 VR. Looking to buy 06 RSV from dealer 2000 miles away. Had a friend go check it out for me...he's used to riding a Honda Shadow...never ridden a Venture. He said it was great except he noticed when in 4th gear at about 45 mph he was hearing what he called a gear whine...kept going until he shifted. Said it happened at in 3rd also. Said it wasn't unbearable but was noticeable. The bike has had the clutch basket replaced (which the original owner told me helped a LOT). I think the 1st gen & 2nd gen engines are basically the same engine. I've read all the threads here about the whine & chirp and now I'm leary of plunking down the money if it's something that's overtly noticeable. I'm wondering if I would notice that whine as much myself, since I've ridden my VR for 17 years & am used to that engine (never noticed anything myself). Any ideas? Thanks for the help...JR
  21. I am not sure what section this should go in since the WTB section I found did not seem to have a new topic tab. So if this is not the right place for it, please move it to the appropriate section. I have a 1987 Venture Royale and need a few items. Most of these were lifted off the bike while at a shop getting a tune up. Rear passenger control module Rider and passenger attachable bags 1 Intercom/Radio volume knob Cassette deck cover Coolant bottle cap (not radiator) Left engine side cover vent 1 engine side cover band (rubber piece holding bottom of cover) Needless to say if anyone has a line on these items please let me know.
  22. Throughout the summer I sometimes thought that the engine heat off my new Venture was a bit excessive. However, now that it's wintertime, I have decided that it's not too bad at all. I guess that it's all perspective. Pete.
  23. For many of you this will not mean much, but for a few old hot rodders out there, it may. I have a 79 El Camino that was my dad's for many years before he died in August 2000. It had a 305 with a Quadrajet that ran ok but did not run very strong and seemed to use a lot of gas. My son needed an engine to go into his Chevy pickup, so he, my 16 year old grandson and I got the parts together to build my old 327 for the El Camino, so he could have the 305. We bored it .030 over, ordered a new cam that is the same as the old L-79 327/350 HP version. I had an Edlebrock Performer series aluminum intake and we put a 650 Holly double pumper on it. I also put full length tube headers on it. I even put the same aluminum Micky Thompson valve covers back on it that I put on 35 years ago, with a little polishing. After primeing the oiling system and getting some gas into the carburator, we cranked it up, open headers and all. It exploded to life, especially with it being inside a garage. Boy, does a cammed up small block Chevy with open headers sound good. This is the same basic engine I built and put in my 1964 Chevelle in 1972 when I was in the military. I rebuilt (basically re-ringed) it again in 1983 and put it in a 240Z Datsun. I put about 100,000 miles on the 327 in the 240Z. Now, all these years later it is back together and sounds real good. I can't wait to get the complete exhaust on it and be able to take it out and see how it runs. It may not get any better gas mileage, but I bet it runs a lot better. RandyA
  24. OK so I live beside a creek. My scoots are stored in a open shed enviroment. Today was 65 degrees and the engines were covered with heavy condensation. I don't think the water would bead heavier on the blocks if I sprayed them with a hose. This occurs quiet often in the winter and the scoots are harder to start when wet. The 84 failed to start this evening and thats a first at 65 degrees. I normally let the scoots idle for 15 - 20 minutes starting about every two weeks. I'm thinking this condensation is not good for the motor. Does the moisture also form inside the engine? What about the carbs and fuel tank? I have a mixture of seafoam in the fuel but this may help. I guess I should cover the scoots even in the shed.Rust a little every year because of this.
  25. Finally got the 91VR home this afternoon. There was some question about the black/gray paint scheme being the original color. I thought it was probably a repaint since evey other 91 I've seen....I think??... is dk.blue on lt.blue. So tell me what you think... The tag on the frame member is gone so I couldn't get the manufacture date. The bike still needs a lot of TLC, but nothing that can't be handled. I think it might have been a Venture Line display bike with all the chrome hanging off of it. The only ding in the plastic is below the right mirror. Luckly it's in the black paint and easy to repair and touch up. I'm looking forward to making it a show piece. Corbin seat and backrest, chrome radiator cover, polished out risers and passenger floorboards, polished out engine covers, woodgrained dash and ignition cover, and lots of Lemon Pledge. Engine runs strong, and brakes and clutch are good. WoooHooo!!!!
