1. well the bike is put away for the winter. and i went out today to find some seafoam to put in for the winter. i been every where from napa to o,rileys none on the shelves. but napa said they had a sister store 40 miles up the road and thay have a case of it. i then asked if they could have them send down a few cans? only need one but thought i would be nice and get 2 just for the hassle of them sending them to this store. the man said no but if you order the whole case we can do it? 12 cans at $8.50 per can? i politely left mubbling under my breath.. so question is? any other additive i can add? i once tried stabil in a motorcyle once and my carbs gummed up. STP any good? or just add carb cleaned to the tank? and let sit? i will not do anything till i figure it out. also since i now clean the storage office on weekends. yep got a little part time job. i clean and get free storage. and around 30 bucks for gas. thats my pay. so i thought hey would it hurt the bike to start it every weekend and just let it warm up for 15 or so minutes? then shut it down? this should keep the carbs in good working order. but still have some aditive in the tank..
2. My bike felt sluggish so when it was cold I started it and sure as heck the front right cylinder was cold so I took out the plug, which is almost new and I use only iridium plugs, and checked for spark and had it. I am wondering if there is an easy way to clean out that one carb and not pull the whole Assembly, I always use seafoam and marvel mystery oil so I do not understand why the carb is plugged. Tom
3. Mr Clean Auto Dry Car wash is absolutely wonderful , I have to admit that I was very skeptical about this product, I give it a 10 out of 10 (Awesome) First of all our water here in Iowa is extremely hard and you folks know what happens to chrome and the paint job if your not fast enough in drying, I have even tried using the soft-water out of the tap in the laundry room. even that will dry with salt left over. our water should be at about 3 grains PPM but it is around 55 Grains PPM Having said all that. I proceeded to wash my trike today and she turned out wonderful , just walk away and it will dry with no spots. but I could not help myself and had to try and dry it. what I liked is that you have till the end of time to wipe the chrome and plastic parts down with no spotting. I was so excited that I walked over and washed both our Cars as well. Guess what? NO HARD WATER SPOTS. simply walk away from the car. My other experiment that I have found and still need to try, is that you mix up a 1/2 cup of BORAX 20 Mule Team to 5 Gals of warm water and place your pressure washer siphon into the bucket, and rinse the car or bike with that. I am told that works very well also. The refiles for Mr Clean Auto Dry Car wash are kinda pricey. this item can be purchased at Walmart when in season and Target Stores and of course on-line. that is how I got mine. also do a a search and read the reviews, I think some do not follow the directions. it has its own soap as well. Just keep turning the dial. Just wanted to share this with you folks. Jeff
4. Anyone thinking about hotel plans for MD? The comfort inn was ok with me, wasn't too far from dons house and was nice and clean. The fact they let a bunch of bikers hang out in front of building and drink was very nice. any other ideas?
5. yep another fuel mileage thread but with a twist.. We always hear of people grumpling about getting bad mileage while others boast how fuel efficient their bikes are compared to others.. I constantly ride with the same buddy on long road trips so it gives a good comparison to riding styles, mods and so on as to what works best for fuel mileage.. In the past two years, he's always gotten better mileage than I have, consistently every time until this last trip.. Even after visiting Goose in Texas and getting his expertise at hand to tweak the valves, carbs and so on, my mileage never got any better than my buddy.. In the USA, I would always pump in about .2 to .5 of a gallon more per tank full runs.. In Canada, it would equate to about 1.5 litres or so per tank load.. Except for this last trip!! FINALLY.. the whole trip I finally managed to get consistently every time better mileage than he did.. sometimes by a large margin! yes! lol And I think it's ONLY because I finally remembers to clean out my K&N air filters! When I was down in TX, we pulled the air filters out and just gave them a shake to knock off anything loose but didn't wash and re-load them as they were still very nice and red.. The other week I pulled them off the bike and gave them a proper wash.. and oh my gosh.. filthy doesn't even come close to describing these filters! Even though they looked red and fresh, they were filthy! And right away, after re-loading them, I started to notice much better mileage across the board and under all conditions.. wow.. yeah I think I'm going to be keeping a better schedule on these puppies from now on.. As for mileage? Yeah.. it got me thinking why so many can boast 45-48 mpg while others can get better than 35 or 38 mpg.. I think a lot of it is on how you ride and at what speeds.. Running the bikes anywhere around 50 to 60 on the speedo will get me anywhere from 44 to 48 mpg on this last trip through the White Mountains, while doing 70 - 85 mph on the I90 series will get me 35 to 38 mpg.. (even at 85 we were the SLOW vehicles, wow) So yeah.. basically, clean your air filters.. just cuz they look clean, doesn't mean they are clean.. Its basic common sense maintenance but I totally let it slip past me.. sigh.
6. how do I clean conection at key switch? I'm having problems with no spark on back plugs. I read in one forum possile low voltage from key switch,I've already checked ohms on pickup coils & ignition coils. I had a problem with my key, (I could not turn it) so I used black carbon lube in ignition. Could that cause a problem? thanks Al
7. well after 1 1/2 yrs i got the 86 i bought stripped down for a frame swap and re-paint. with help from the brother of a co-worker who want to learn about working on bikes, we got it down to the engine ready to remove from frame. alread found several problems as we took things off. the whole area below battery box is corruded up from acid, need to clean and re paint computer mount, clean and coat wiring blocks with electric gel. found diaphrams in carbs stiff and holes in them, need to order new ones. linkage set-screw between 2 of the carbs was loose and not opening the carbs at the same rate, could have never got them synced right. other than that it's in pretty good shape over-all. i'll have a few spare parts left over, because he gave me 2 extra fake gas tank covers, 1 radio and some other parts i need to find out what there for. the seat is in bad shape as the cover is cracked-up, if anybody has a good one or know where i can get this one re-covered that would work. i'm going to take it to a guy who did some other work for me and see if he can do it reasonable. looking foward to getting it back together and see how it turns out.
8. When I got home yesterday I realized my left saddlebag lid had fallen off! I retraced my steps but so far it looks like it made a clean getaway. Does anyone know where a used saddlebag lid could be found for my 1989 Venture Royale?
9. I have intermitant use of my CB since sometimes it will turn on and other times it will not. I am sure that if I open the front remote controller and clean the contacts on the CB switch it will work. Just checking with the real pros!
10. Here's the original thread... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46705 And here it is, (again) in stages of completion to almost completed (have a few lights yet to install and clean up the wheels some)
11. next week I get my carbs rebuilt and back tire put on.... then do regular fluid maintenance, rerun a few wires for brakes and turn signals, then at least I can ride a little... then next month I will get my new progress fork springs. I will also get new brake pads next week. This bike sat up for 7 years in a barn before I got it so I didnt really expect the carbs to come clean but was sure hoping so... at least this way I know they will be all they can be. In the mean time my honda v65 sabre will be getting a new fairing. I found an orignal hondaline fairing that orignally came on a sabre my same color. Cant wait for all of it to come together.
12. As I stated in an earlier article I just bought my first Gen 2. I have been riding a gen 1 so I didn't really pay much attention to how I cleaned it. The previous owner did a great job. Doesn't even have a water spot. I would like to know how I clean the painted parts, metal and windsheild properly. Additionally, when I travel on long trips and get bugs all over the windshield how do I get them off so I don't scratch my windsheild. My old windsheild was so bad I couldn't figure it out. The only small amount of surface rust on this vehicle is on the bolts. I have thought I had seen that they sell dryers for after you wash your bike. Didn't know if this reduced or would eliminate this problem. Thanks for the help. I think the paint is clear coated. I am thinking this means that wax is not necessary.
13. Coming home from Savannah today I almost lost my running light. the frame mounted bracket to which squidly's light bracket, the horn and a fog light are mounted broke clean off. The metal is clean all through the break, so this was not a developing crack with ultimate break. Don't know if something hit the light to have caused this, but at least she landed on my boot and hung on by the wiring. Question one would be if any one knows of the top if this is a bolt on tab or welded on. And second, if it is bolted on does anyone have a spare (left side) so I can fix this easy like. Thanks!!
14. Saw a Kaw today. A 1969 120 with chrome fenders and red and white I think. Been in basement for years. Lot of surface rust on chrome but think it would clean. Tank is crap but it is getting enough fuel thru it to fire. Tries but won't run. Be a good project. What is it worth???
15. If you have ever found your helmet with a bad odor from sweat. Or maybe someone wore your helmet and you don't care for there head lice. You can do what I do and put your melon protector In the dish washer on a short cycle (30 min) with about 1 oz of Shampoo. Just use your strap and tie it around the bottom of the bottom tray and use a safety pin to hold the rest of the strap so it won't lay on the heating element. Just pull the helmet out after the last rinse cycle. You don't need the heating element on to dry the thing. The helmet comes out clean and fresh. Just thought someone else might like to know how to clean one up. Been doing it for years and never thought of posting it until I had to clean mine tonight...................Ron
16. I got "Brown Sugar" scattered all over the driveway. Cleaning a little and just getting to know her. How do you guys clean wheels?? I would just spray them off and let them go but don't seem right on this one. Those things are a B to clean! Tear fingers up!! Retire and ride my a** Only way I can keep away from Warden is tinker with Bike.
17. No, not what you think. Just curious if there is a "trick" to the passenger getting off the bike without looking like they are falling off the bike. How does your passenger dismount? Keep it clean. Wally
18. I had to sell her. It's like selling on of your kids. Just didn't have enough room. To many in the stable. She went to a real nice fellow in Mississippi, a ride captain in the Patriot Guard. I'll miss her. Good bye Road Star! Now I only have to keep two Ventures clean. My wife and I can use some of the money for a cruise. I can go to my sons competition in Barbados. I can keep my eye open for another great motorcycle deal.
19. How long should fork seals last? I thought I had them licked on my blue bike from back early in the '08 season, or perhaps it was '07. On the way home from work this evening though, I noticed that my port side fork is leaking again big time. I also changed the bushings when I last did the seals and I only used genuine Yama parts. They have both been clean as a whistle ever since, up to today. Would gators help, or do they just mask the problems? Brian H.
20. Greetings all A Riding buddy and I are headed for points South from Halifax Canada, down to Key West and meander inland and north for a few weeks in mid May / June. Up til 2000, as a cager, I had used Military Transient Accommodation extensively throughout the US and Europe as a way to keep traveling costs down. Facilities were always clean and very adequate. Does anyone know if Post 9/11, if the bases still allow the uses of facilities such as these, by retired Service Members?
21. Thanks very much for all the help I got in getting my 88 Venture running. I had bought this bike as a non-runner. A friend put me on to it since he knew I was looking for a 88 Wing and he had a friend that had medical problems and needed to get rid of his Venture (I had never heard of a Venture). Clutch did not work so rebuilt master and slave (I would never of believed that the slave would come out of that little hole if it had not been for the posts) brakes needed bleeding. There was a mouse house in the radio compartment. Needed a new battery. Very very bad gas in the tank. Choke would not move because of dried gas. Carbs were gunked up so I replaced every rubber part in carbs (did not know Yamaha rubber could be so expensive) I did get the diaphrams from ebay. I also replaced the carb screws with stainless socket screws. I did do the resistor thing to get the bat light to go off. Repaired the securing pins for the side covers. Replaced fuel filter and changed oil, filter and rear end grease. Changed the o-ring in the draining/running valve. Replaced spark plug wires caps and spark plugs. Got progressive springs for front. Polish clean polish clean polish clean. Got the carbs back on hit the started and started right up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sync the carbs, got new tags and insurance, got it off the work table and took the first ride. What a change from rideing smaller bikes. I was surprised how good it sounds, I thought it would sound more like a Wing but sounds more like my Trident. I took it up on the 4lane and pushed it a little when I checked my speed I was doing 75 and I was not realy pushing it. Looks like I have a bike I can take a trip on with less than 40000 miles and a total investment of about $2800. This would not of been possible without all of your help. Thanks, Ed
22. Presently, on my Venture I have both 'frost plugs' drilled out completely in the RK muffs. It's fairly loud when accelerating but quite tolerable when cruising, I'm wondering if anybody has just one 'frost plug' removed and which end did you remove ? I have a bit that will remove all of the plug and makes a real nice clean hole.
23. The 83 I bought runs really great - but it has rust everywhere. Basically anything chrome is rusty. I am not sure how much to put into this bike. I checked Ebay and can find chrome pieces such as engine gaurds, stator cover, etc - but shipping is the huge killer. The frame even has rust on it - but not much I will do about that except clean up and paint a bit. So, anyone out here have any parts they want to sell and ship at a decent price?
24. I don't know if anyone else was a fan of this product,..... but the magic word there is "was". I have been having a hard time finding the refill soap, so I contacted P&G and just got back a letter stating they are discontinuing the product. So, if you use Mr Clean car wash system, run out quick and score all the soap and sponges you can, while they are on the shelf. Wait till I tell the wife, she is always on me for "washing the bike again!", obviously I didnt do it enough.... if they're discontinuing the brand!! Dam, and that system worked SOOO well too!
25. I was replacing the spark plugs on my 97 Tour Classic and in the process of struggling with removing one of the spark plug wires the wire came out of the boot. Seemed to be much too clean of a break; looked like it was cut with a knife the break was so clean. How do these connect within the boot themselves? I am assuming I now have to replace the entire assembly (coil plus wire), correct? Is there any way to repair it?
