  1. I was on the local CL and posted was a Corbin seat with backrest off a 85 venture! Well I have an 85 venture and have been on the fence about getting a utopia back rest and this deal was about $70.00 more than just the rest. Long story short I contacted him by email and left my number and while I was a church yesterday he called and left his # called back "Just sold it" It was even the right color for my bike. I find the stock seat very comfortable and just want a backrest . In all reality I don't go all that far (yet) and I have a Corbin on my V65 Magna with a sliding backrest that seat was bad to start with. So do the Utopia rest work well ? Can the passenger get on easily . I'm thinking I can live with the stock seat and the color is a perfect match or should I keep hunting for a Corbin? A new Cobin is roughly half of what my bike cost.thanks
  2. All, I am looking to add a venture tour pack truck, backrest and such to my 2008 RSTD. I have the hand grips and the trunk itself. I need the backrest, mounting brackets and other pieces. Where can I get a list of complete parts and where can I get the parts? I know I have seen some of the other RSTD owners do this and post some awesome pictures. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Looking to trade my Brown Venture Line Backrest for your Gray one?
  4. Tried on a Gold Wing the other day and my rider noticed that the backrest is significantly taller than the one on our 2009 Venture. Found a "custom" seat on the Star accessories site that says it's 3 inches taller than stock (link below). Does anyone have one of these? Does the rider notice a significant difference in the height? And finally, is swapping out the OEM backrest beyond the abilities of a mere mortal (i.e. not a wrench)? Thanks http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitemdetail/5/4/83/405/all/1/3297/0/detail.aspx
  5. does anyone know if I can put a backrest on my 99 factory seat. would like to have one that matches.
  6. There is a Yama Venture Line backrest on eBay, if anyone is interested. Not sure of the condition, as the pics are not very good and description is lacking. Item number is 330665933646. Jim
  7. Hello, Being new here, it looks as though I originally posted a question in the wrong section. Freebird sent a Utopia link in response to this, but I am still looking for something more like the Markland or Ventureline product. Now that I have found the correct location, here is the post again. Hi, I am new here, and am hoping that someone might be able to help me out. In 1983, I bought a brand new 1983 Yamaha Venture. Bright red, and nothing special. Over the years, I have added a Ventureline driver's seat backrest and luggage rack, and an aftermarket radio from Best Buy. I still have the bike, and ride it regularly. It seems to put a lot of newer bikes to shame in terms of handling and engine performance. Brand new, out the door, it only cost a fraction of what bikes cost now. Here is why I joined this board. My son has followed in my footsteps, and this last summer, he purchased a 1983 Yamaha Venture too (see pic). First thing that we noticed, was that all 1983 Ventures are not the same. Things like clock location, anti-glare glass, helmet holders, turn signal cancelling switch type, and other little knick knacks, are different. The one thing that he would like to be the same though, is that he would like to have a backrest for the driver seat. He currently lives four hours away from home, and he enjoys riding the Venture when he visits. I would like to buy a backrest for his Venture as a Christmas present, but have come up against a wall of stone. Nobody seems to carry them anymore for a 1983 XVZ1200. I tried Markland, Babbit's, E-bay, Google, Craig's list, the local Yamaha shop (Ventureline), and several aftermarket shops. Nobody can even give me any leads. At this point, I would be happy to find even a used backrest. Can anybody give any suggestions? Thank you, Greg
  8. It looks like the backrest is easy to remove for the times that I have a passenger on the bike. Is that correct? A couple of pins and pops off? Do the brackets for the backrest tend to dig in to the seat? Any wear marks or holes from the backrest or the brackets?
  9. About a month ago dusty1300 offered up a couple of hardcase trunk bags for sale. He had a nice Castle that was good sized and I took it off his hands. I had a soft trunk bag for a few years and it was not very big and a pain when it was empty. His Castle was designed for a sissy bar type mount so I was able to use the frame of that to attach my smaller soft bag to the rear of the Castle. The weight of the soft bag lays on the passenger backrest so it supports itself pretty well. And I can simply tip my backrest forward to still open the trunk for access without removing anything. Still have room under the soft bag for my small bedroll. Still need to make a set of straps to tie it all on so I won't need the bungies but winter is coming and I have time to mess with it. But I took it out for a ride tonight and it sits well and stable. So thanks Tom for letting go of the Castle. Makes my traveling a little easier. Mike
  10. I received my drivers backrest today, Custom World International. The installation was simple and it has several adjustments. Took a ride and it was awesome. I'll try and post pictures from my phone.
  11. I bought this Yamaha backrest for my 86 VR. The ad said that it was for an 83-84. I hope its also for an 86! http://www.raymondstacy.com/backrest.jpg Now I don't know how to mount it. Does anyone have a closeup of how it mounts or is it simple enough to just tell me how its done? Thanks! Ray
  12. I still haven't figured out how to mount the backrest on my 83, and if I have all the parts? Would some kind person with a backrest mounted on there 83 send or post a pic of the brackets and the OEM backrest mounted on bike
  13. When I talked myself into buying the RSTD last April one of the key points I sold myself on in trading my V-Star 950 cruiser was that any time I wanted I could pop off the quick release windshield and backrest and I'd have the style and open air feel of a cruiser. 5 months later I've got the windshield and backrest off so I can get into the details of my baby's weekly bath and wax. I'm about to put them back on when the thought occurs that I've never (NEVER) taken her out without the clip-ons attached. Hmmm. Helmet on and off we go. The difference in feel is amazing. It's like having a completely different bike hidden inside the shell of the RSTD. The open air feel, the perception of freedom, the (probably imagined) nimbleness of response, all brought back the feeling that I loved on my 950. I love the big screen on the highway, and my wife loves the backrest and armrests, but I think the plexi and the backrest may be spending more time on the shelf than they've been used to when I'm going 1-up in town... It feels like the very first time....
  14. OK, Been riding an 06 tour deluxe with Mustang seat that had integrated backrest. Bought a Midnight Venture with a standard seat. Cant ride but an hour or so before I am really feeling the need to lean back. I like the way the Mustang was adjustable and laid down. What backrest do you have or prefer and why? :feedback: Thanks in advance all. Signed, Old Hurtin' Back
  15. I have been through alot of posts here and I am seriously thinking of picking up a RSTD or RSV. for the last several years I have been riding a Harley wide glide. I like it enough, but I am now in the market for something a little more comfortable. I have owned everything from Gold wings to sport bikes to on/off road bikes. I was considering buying a new Road King or Electra Glide, but they start out at 21 grand w/no extras. Seems a little expensive for what you get. So here is the situation I am in. A Harley/Honda/Yamaha dealer an hour North of here has an 07 RSTD sitting on the floor with 22 miles on it. I put 15 of those on test driving it. I believe these sold new in 07 for around 14k and change. They have it marked down to 11,300 and I feel like they may come down a little more. The bike is a 3 year old "new" bike. How do you tell what it is worth? I am also somewhat concerned that it will seem like a big bulky lumber wagon compared to my WG, but then it is a tourer. Has anybody here regretted trading in a WG or something similar and been bored with the RS? I am attracted to the RSTD because it seems stable on the highway, has a nice big seat and backrest for my wife, and if I am alone i can take off the windshield and backrest real easily. I was shopping for a bike with EFI, but I am into 70's Hondas so multiple carbs and synchronization doesn't scare me too much. Also, a 5 year unlimited mile warranty doesn't hurt either. I am also a big fan of customizing my bikes with pipes and chrome. It seems there are alot of options for RS's. Is that the case? Thanks for taking a look at this post. Sorry I am all over the map with my questions. Erik
  16. My wife finaly road on our new to us 2004 RSV. Our last bike was a GW so I was concerned how she would like this bike. She really enjoyed it and said it was very comfortable. I was planning on adding armrest figuring she would want them because she had them on the GW. To my surprise she liked the bike without them, she likes holding the handles and is very comfortable. She did say she would like me to get a drivers backrest with a storage pouch in the back so she can put stuff in it. That was her only complaint is lack of reachable storage. So I went from needing to buy armrest for her to buying a backrest for me, I'm a lucky man. Now I just need to find out who makes a backrest with a storage pouch.
  17. HELP, MY BACK IS KILLING ME..!!!! I'm looking for a backrest for my 2000 Millenium Venture. It is a cream colored rubber seat. I might even want to have a similar color leather seat and backrest built for it. I just bought a Mustang seat for my 06 RSTD from Phoneman1981 and it has a backrest on it. Now I don't think I can ride the Venture without a backrest. C Ya, Graderman46
  18. Is there one available for my 2005 RSTD? Yamaha doesn't show one, didn't know if one for a Vstar or Roadstar might work?
  19. As you may have seen in a previous thread, I have recently purchased and installed the 4 pc Ultimate Seat set + passenger armrests. The weather here sucks, but I've managed to get 300+ km in since the installation and I'm ready to share my results. Customer Service / Delivery: I purchased from the website with no human contact necessary. Automated emails notified me of the completed purchase, and in due course, that the products had been shipped. There was a bobble by UPS during shipping when the parcel went astray in Moncton NB, but it was corrected and was still delivered ahead of the projected schedule. Definitely not the supplier's fault. Packaging: Sturdy cardboard boxes, with each piece individually wrapped in bubble wrap. It would have taken a significant event to cause damage during shipping. Fit and finish: No detectable flaws in the material, stitching, assembly etc. Installation: Wide backrest: one of the washers embedded in the back around the screw holes seperated. Pressed back in to position and it stayed. Fit and finish, including screw hole line up - perfect. Rider backrest: Slotted in securely and easily. Wide range of adjustment for angle. Backrest pouch: Not exactly sure what I'm going to use this for yet, but it's well made and fitted. Passenger seat: The stock mount with 3 points of attachment had to be removed to be replaced by the supplied single point mount. There were contact pads that supported the front spread over the same area that the stock mount covered. Rear bracket was not quite in contact with the fender when originally placed in position but tightening the rear screw hand tight fixed that. Riders seat: Rear bracket fitted securely into position. The front screw holes did not initially line up. I sat my 260 lbs on it and it shifted a bit. Got off and looked - yup - precisely in place. Riding position: I'm about 1 1/2" higher, 1" forward. Not bad at all. Changed my arm angle slightly but not enough to matter, and I became accustomed to it quickly. Comfort: Intially stiff, but this did not cause a worry as it had been reported by other reviewers. It's quickly molding to my shape and becoming more confortable every time I sit on it. Riding: I'm not precisely sure why, but I find I feel more 'connected' to the bike. My confidence in low speed handling has improved. The one middle distance trip I've made with it was a real eyeopener. Km after km, it just felt right, like my leather recliner in the TV room. The stock seat would have had me wriggling after 20-30 minutes trying to ease the ache. I do find that vibration may be moving the backrest adjustment screw as I ride. I'm going to give it a few more long runs until I'm sure exactly where I want the backrest positioned and then I'll loctite it. Passenger: I've taken 3 of my children for rides with it. All agree that the wider backrest, more comfortable seat and arm rests allow them to sit back and enjoy the ride. My 9 year olds find that they cannot get their feet flat on the boards any more because the rider backrest is in their way. ( I expect they'll grow) My DW has sat on it and pronounced it 'comfortable' but she hasnt been on the road on it yet. Price: There's a bit of sticker shock with this one, but if you can get past that I feel it's an extremely satisfactory solution to a very unsatisfactory stock seating set. If anyone has any questions about the seat or installation, please feel free to PM.
  20. I have been searching for a backrest and mounting brackets for an 86 VR, been scouring e-bay for a while if anyone knows someone who is selling one let me know. Tom
  21. I am looking to get a seat and backrest for my RSTD... I have a Mustang seat on my VTX1300 and I like it, but I recently sat on an Ultimate seat and man was it nice..... I was wondering if I could get some feedback, good, bad, or indiferent from anyone that has had either of these on their RSTD or RSV.. Thanks, Robert C.
  22. bought a 2000 venture last fall and got a chance to get out with the wife to ride. she told me that the backrest seemed to vibrate a slight bit that was irritating. she said the 82 goldwing didn't do that so wondering if something may be wrong. thanks larry
  23. Not sure if this is the place to post this but what the hell! My brothers friend is ready to put his wing on the market and has said he will sell it to me for $8000 It is a GL1500 1998 with 10,000 miles. It has been garage kept and is immaculate. Not a lot of upgrades but it has a backrest and chrome brake covers etc. Is this a decent price in anyones opinion. I have been looking for a while, just not real hard. It is fuel injected and has new tires. I can try and post some pictures.
  24. I'm thinking of buying a backrest for my 2007 RSV. After checking out the posts on backrests I noticed that most them are old posts, and there seems to be a lot of talk about how comfortable a particular backrest is compared to one's height. So, I would like to get some up to date opinions and some more info on the backrest vs my height (5' 8"). Thanks.
  25. Latest project for the scooter sunk to a new low. I bought an adjustable backrest bracket from a 2007 Harley Road Glide and mounted it on the bike. I didn't get the mounting bar for the backrest or the actual backrest so I fabricated one up. The mounting brackets were also McGyvered from stock steel pieces . I had to remove a section of the plastic base for the seat and a little foam for the bracket clearance. It is a removable backrest and the tilt can be adjusted forward and back. There is a cable made for it that I didn't get. The tilt feature is something I really don't care if I have, since once I get it set where I want it, it won't need to move again. I can trigger the tilt but the seat needs to be off in order to do it without the cable. There are two pictures of the orange bike that is a Road Glide with the stock bracket mounted to it. I don't have the backrest covered or the bar powder coated. Those are tomorrows project. Cost for the bracket on ebay was $46 with shipping and I have about another $30 in a couple of pieces of steel and the foam and covering material. It really does make the bike more comfortable. Road it for about 40 miles tonight and I like it. Bike didn't seem any slower with the HD part on it either. Gary
