  1. There has been a change of venue for our M & E on Aug 6th (the Upstate NY Cruise & Cream). The Harbor Towne Belle cruise has been changed to a cruise on the Sam Patch packetboat on the Erie Canal(website: www.samandmary.org). We did not meet the minimum number of passengers for a trip on the Harbor Towne Belle. The cruise on the Sam Patch will start at 2:00 PM from the dockage at Schoen Place in Pittsford, NY. I have reserved 20 seats for this cruise and can change the total up to Tuesday the 2nd of Aug. We will leave my home at 1:00 PM for the ride to Pittsford. (Approx. 20/25 minute ride.) PLEASE NOTE THE NEW TIME FOR DEPARTURE FROM MY HOME. We will also have a complimentary shuttle service for everyone that is staying overnite, on Saturday night, at the two hotels listed in the original M & E notice (Holiday Inn Express & Hampton Inn). We will be offering adult beverages at the dinner after the cruise, and this will allow you to leave your bike at our home and be escorted to your hotel in the evening. You will also be picked up in the morning and returned to our home to retrieve your scoot. We will serve coffee and donuts, bagels, etc for a morning snack when you retrieve your scoot. Please let me know if you are staying overnight. If you arrive early on Saturday, we will be serving a light snack of “finger foods” before we leave from my home on Saturday. Please update your name on the calendar, if you want to delete your name or, if you have not previously signed up, and wish to participate, please do so ASAP. I will need a final count for the cruise by Aug 2nd. Thanks Jim
  2. The other day while I had time off I was getting my 86 ready to go on the trip and noticed the front brake signal was not working but the back brake was so OK it is an 86 so I went on line and ordered another one. Today I went to go for a ride to my dads and the back brake lights were not working, went through all the fuses and they were OK so I went for a little ride turned on the cruise control and tapped on the front and back brakes and they shut off the cruise which tells me both switches work, now is there some kind of brake module ? I start m y 12 hr nights today so I can't mess with the bike for a couple of weeks if anyone has an idea I would appreciate it.
  3. Just bought it, has 43,00 miles and I have a couple of questions. The temp gage is not working, neither is the cruise. Found some good info on the sight regarding the cruise. Also the previous owner tells me he's never had any valve shim work done and was wondering if that should be done. The bike rides a bit rough and the gas mileage is around 30 mpg. I think it should be closer to 45, but not sure. Have to race the engine a bit to get going. I also own a 1982 CB900C that runs really smooth and almost takes off in 1st without giving any throttle (that's in high with the 10 speed trans). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
  4. Alright all you smartypants folks- let's try this one on for size. Has anybody tried modifying the speedo sensor so that cruise will work above 80mph? I understand the basic principle of reed switches and etc, but the specifics of it would need to be known in order to work a go-around for the 80mph inhibit limit. Would it be as simple as jumping across the contacts like the other CMU jumpers? How does the cruise module KNOW when you're going 80+?
  5. Save the date.........August 6th 2011.......for a cruise on Lake Ontario and the Genesee River. Sheila & I are hosting a M & E in August. I wanted to buy a party barge, but my wife said something about finding me floating in Lake Ontario, ............face down! So, I decided to do the next best thing and let someone else do the driving and we can enjoy the scenery. After the cruise we will return to our home for a picnic style dinner and a custom ice cream sundae bar. Yes, Big Tom....there is something for everyone! Build your own banana split!!! :fnd_(16): We have room in our yard for a few tents if you would like to spend the night, and a hot tub and a beach for a swim in the lake. See the details in the Meets & Eats Forum. We hope to see you there!! Jim & Sheila
  6. Has anyone installed an electronic cruise control on a 97RSTD, not the vacuum operated device? Looking for some info. Anyone used these units? Thanks, I think!!!
  7. Went for a 5 hour ride today and had the cruise control disengage 3 times after hitting very rough interstate patches. Top two cruise lights were flashing a 2 flash pattern. Had to turn cruise off and back on to get it working. Is this a known problem or something I can correct. Bob Marshall, il
  8. What is "normal" temp for a first gen? My bike likes to run just below the red on the stock gauge. The fan comes on and off like it should. On the highway it runs a little cooler, but not much. Do I need to flush the system out again? If I just cruise around town my legs will get reel warm reel quick. It is WAY worse running the side covers than without. Any ideas? Shaun
  9. Bike has 6000 miles on it and just yesterday I began having probs with the cruise control. It'll turn on, but when I set it, it will hold momemtarily then kick off. I tried it a few different times, sometimes it would engage after a couple of tries, but it'd only hold a minute or so before kicking back off. I know it's supposed to be under warrenty, but if I could fix it myself I'd rather do that. I hate letting people work on my stuff. Any ideas? tks in advance!
  10. This "thing" that I bought is very close to going on the road. Lot's has been done, including shimming the valves and new gaskets. Shout out to skydoc_17 here for the loan of the kit. The job is easy, for anyone considering it, even if access is tight. Now it doesn't leak oil or water ... both cured. I took it for a test ride this morning and there are issues: First .... The cruise control is behaving normally. All the lights are doing exactly as they are supposed to. Clutch switch is operating normally. The only problem is that the cruise won't engage. Second, and more important .... I rode about seven miles at various speeds up to 70mph. It drives well once warm. On the over run, and at starting, it still pops and backfires. Suggestions welcome. It also has a hot starting problem. When I got back I shut off the engine. I then tried to re-start it within a couple of minutes .... nuttin'. The starter motor tried to turn, turned slowly, not enough to fire. For all the world it sounded like a flat battery. However, the battery is fully charged, and charging well. I pushed it into the shop ... that front braking is still binding a bit (caliper is going to have to be cleaned). Twenty minutes later I went out, pushed the button and it started, first try, with no hesitating. I am leaning towards a starter motor issue .... Maybe that has to come off for a refurb .... Am I right and is it hard to do ... removing it, that is?
  11. On my 89 with 45,000 miles on it, the cruise control works great.....if I hold the clutch lever all the way out with my hand. When I bought the bike 2 years ago, I relplaced the bushing, but that didn't help much. There is quite a bit of play between where the clutch cylinder quits pushing the lever outward and the end of travel where the cruise control senses that the clutch is released. It seems to me that maybe I want to replace or stretch the spring that is between the clutch cylinder and the lever bushing?? Anybody have any experience with this problem?? Frank D.
  12. Last season the cruise control worked great. Today was the first time out this year, And the cruise didn't want to work. When I left this morning the cruise did work going in to town. We left on our STAR chapter ride, and the cruise would turn on but the set button would not work. After about 75 miles we stopped, and when we started again the cruise worked until the first time I disengaged it, the RES light came on came on as it should, but then nothing. Hit the RES button nothing, hit the SET button nothing. I shut the cruise control off and turned it back on and and the on light comes on, but SET button doesn't work. Though out the day it worked about 4 times with me messing with it, trying to figure it out while on a 400 mile ride. Everything else is working perfectly. When I got home this evening I checked brake switches, clutch switch, and wiring. Went for a ride to see if anything helped, and no go. Got home from the test ride, and decided to check the switches on control switches on the handle bars. Took those apart and cleaned and checked the contacts in them. Everything looked good there. Haven't a chance to try it again. But I don't think that was the problem either. Over the winter I changed the motor oil & oil in the final drive, replace the rear tire, put chrome side covers on, serviced air filters, put billet air filter covers on, put chrome clutch & brake levers on. Any ideas on what & where to check next. Help is always appreciated. Thanks, Ron
  13. I love the cruise. What a pleasure it is to have something like that on a bike. NOW for the question. Where do YOU rest your right hand?? I simply just rested mine on the bar end weight because the throttle.
  14. I ha d Earl work on my 89 VR over the winter and one of the things I had him change was the switch and clutch lever because the cruise would cut off when I went over a bump in the road. Well, to make a long story short, I went for a ride today and the cruise doesn't work. When I turn the switch on, both the power light and the resume light come on and stay on. I cannot set the cruise. Also, the bike would not start with the bike in gear and the clutch handle in. I had to put the bike in Neutral to start it. I took the switch apart on the clutch handle and cleaned it and lubed it with dielectric grease and it now starts with the bike in gear and clutch in, but the resume light and power light are still on and the cruise does not work. The cruise worked, before I had the clutch handle changed, but would go off when the clutch handle was wiggled. So, I am not sure what to look for. I assume that I have a bad connection somewhere and will have to take the fairing off to look at the wiring. Is there a difference in the switches on the clutch handle, between years, as I had Earl change the switch that I bought off fleabay and now wonder if there is a difference in the switches. Has anyone had this problem before? Any suggestiions would be appreciated. Jim
  15. Hi guys.. I'm not sure if it's because it's still cold or what but when engaging my cruise control, it will stay on but for only a few seconds and then dis-engage.. not hitting any bumps or birds to switch it off.. I remember reading somewhere that there may be cables that might be slopping or switches being made that can cause that.. Does anyone recall what where and how to adjust and / or check for this? At 70 mph in 5th gear, for example, would a tall wide windscreen and heavy winds be enough to cause the bike to do that? Cheers
  16. I'm under warranty so no worries. Anyhow when I am going up a slight grade with the cruise on it seems to drop excessively, like say 6-8 mph. Of course when it does this the cruise kicks out and my RES light illuminates. Now then it also has a slight "slobber" at idle and smells a little rich. Its a 09 with 3,200 miles. Thinking hit a tank with sea foam first before trip to dealer??? It has the power no problem, but I seem to have to "twist" it up pretty hard on a grade. Also OD or fifth gear seems a little too high at 65 mph. Almost feels like OD would be on the flat or speeds over 75. Is this some of my bogging down problem
  17. used my newly repaired cruise control swith today. It worked good. Used the pcv cement at Kregerdoodles. So far so good.
  18. Does anyone use some sort of manuel cruise control (non electronic)?
  19. Had the bike out today, tried to engage cruise control.. and remembered that there was a quick trick to getting the cruise to stick to the desired speed, without waiting for the system to catch up (lagging).. but erhmm can't remember what it was.. double tap the set button? Double tap the Accel button? Regardless, the shake down cruise went well.. lots of mods and adjustments made to the bike this past winter and the bike performs well, almost like a different bike. But I couldn't get the cruise control to engage properly or stay on.. 3000 rpm at 60 mph in 5th.. with heavy winds.. wondering if that had anything to do with it.. Does anyone remember what that quick set trick was on cruise control? Cheers
  20. I put Ponch gauges in my 03 and like it so much but something was missing......some sort of electric monitor. I chose a Kury volt meter and put it in the space where the Cruise switch was. I mountedthe Cruise in the top of the gas tank cover (see pic). So let me know what you think. Thanks Kent
  21. Hi, I own a 2004 RSV and was wondering if the RSV is good to cruise at say 140KPH or 150 KPH all day long kind of thing. It's a purely subjective question but when I had my 1800 Wing it could cruise all day long at 150 160 KPH no problem. All comments are welcome. Thank you in advance. Chris in Red Deer, AB
  22. I just got my tach-gauge set-up from Ponch. Looks great, and looking forward to getting it installed. I'm thinking of making a change in it though. I looked at this digital voltmeter: http://www.digitalmeter.com/cgi-bin/...nfig=ent-datel I'd like to mount that where Ponch has the cruise button. My plan was to mount the cruise button somewhere else (in the dash, bottom edge of the dash, inner fairing, I'm not sure). I'd like to add the voltmeter to the gauge cluster, and I don't need to SEE the cruise button, just be able to reach it. Normally, I turn the cruise on when I start the bike, and not touch the button again. Only rarely do I turn it off, mostly when I'm riding in the dark and the cruise dash lights get a bit annoying. My question now is: Can that on-off switch be wired around and just let the cruise be on full time? The cruise control button on the handlebars does all the actual controlling of the cruise. I'm pretty sure my car and pickup cruise is on every time I start the vehicle, unless I choose to turn it off. Could the bike be the same way? The on-off switch is a bit more than on-off. 3 positions, off, on(to turn it on), and the central position that apparently doesn't turn it on, but keeps it on once it's been turned on. One possibily would be to find a simpler smaller switch that could be located mostly out of sight but within easy reach as you ride. Any thoughts, or outright know-how, on this idea?? Larry
  23. I was wondering what you cruise at on the highway when you are touring? All state and provincial speed limits aside; what do you normally cruise at or what is the RSV capable of cruising at for sustained periods of time? I like to cruise between 130 and 140 kph on the superslab and about 120 130 on the secondary roads. Is the RSV capable of 160 kph+? That would be 100mph+ or is that really pushing it's limits? I guess my second question is passing. Do you have to down shift in order to pass comfortably and if so does she have enough grunt to get around traffic with ease? Thanks for your comments in advance.
  24. Hi All, Does anyone have info on the Markland cruise control? I have an 83 VR1200 (1300 86 engine,) and it doesn't work currently. I would like to find some info, schematic, etc. on the electronics on it. When I got the bike, it would work intermittently. I took apart the head, and resoldered some connections that looked iffy, and then it worked fine. I rteplaced the wheat lamps in it, and it lights up, but now there is no response from the cruise unit, it does not pull the throttle cables like it should (not at all). This is the aftermarket one, not the factory VR cruise like the 84 on has. Thanks in advance!
  25. Ok took the RSTD out on the interstate for the first time today. I went to put on the cruise and when I pushed the switch on it did not come on. it did come on when I pushed it all they way up but not when I just push it to on and it clicked. is it normal to have to push switch all the way to the top of the switch travel before the cruise comes on? Thanks for the help
