  1. I am thinking of selling my 1996 RSTC and buying a 1999 Road Star. I would be gaining 3 years. 300cc's and the Road Star has 15,000 less miles. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for when I check out this bike?
  2. While I'm waiting on my coolant bypass-valve parts, Ill ask a question on another wore-out topic. Wasn't the 2nd gear issue on 1st gens fixed under a factory recall in the 80's, or under an extended warranty for that particular issue ? Or did the bike have to actually be experiencing the problem before they would fix it ? If it has been fixed in the past, is there any way at all to tell ? I bought my 83' about 8 years ago and am approaching 100k miles, fairly rigorous miles, most of them by me, and the tranny is as solid today as it was when I got it with 41k on it, so I am thinking that maybe 2nd gear was already done years ago by owner #1. Owner #2 only had it for a couple of years before selling it to me. He knew owner #1 and said that #1 had everything done on it by the dealer since day-one in 1983, even all his oil changes and tires, etc.... I am owner #3.
  3. So I borrowed my Vmax back and let my buddy take the Venture for a week. It's been a few months now since I sold it. I climbed on the Vmax and it felt like a toy! Light, easy to change direction and the POWER! Haha First time I wound it thru first and hard into second it stood right up. I giggled my butt off till about 30 miles into my ride.... then the pain set in. The rearsets never seemed so extreme and the seat was like concrete. It was nice to have the wind in my face again but it was an odd experience to say the least. I guess that explains why the Venture is already gaining miles. Also explains how I managed 600 miles back home last week without being crippled. So now I need an extra 50 HP on my Venture. My Vmax dynoed at 135 HP or so I think the Venture needs to have more cause of the extra weight the Venture is wearing. Maybe after the warranty is up? Frank
  4. GaStar

    Solace

http://www.theusatrailerstore.com/motorcycle-trailer-and-hitch/solace-a-pull-behind-motorcycle-camper-trailer/ Very similar to the time out but about a grand cheaper. Anyone looked at them? Their warehouse is only about 101 miles away. I may make a road trip and check them out. I sent them a message to make sure they have a showroom. I'm sure they do.
  5. Please post the approximate mileage that you noticed clutch slippage and the corrective action you took. I've got approximately 44,500 miles on my 06 RSV and so far no clutch problems. I don't want a trip spoiled by a slipping clutch so I'm trying to get an idea when everyone has experienced clutch problems and the best corrective actions. Thanks!
  6. This weekend (Friday - Saturday), Jan and I took Quickstep's bike for a shake down ride to the Rat Fink Reunion in Manti. We traveled 325 miles over the two days and got to see some of the artists do some great work. I've gotten the bike repainted and the plastic reinstalled for the trip. The bike averaged about 45 miles per gallon. I did have one issue with the clutch master cylinder losing the nickel that was covering the missing site glass we'll fix this week. While we were looking around the museum, some paint from Frank Fallond got on the bike....check it out. I think we'll leave it on, kind of adds character: http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/Alans%2084%20Rebuild/IMG_1176.jpghttp://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/Alans%2084%20Rebuild/IMG_1177.jpghttp://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/Alans%2084%20Rebuild/IMG_1181.jpghttp://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/Alans%2084%20Rebuild/IMG_1185.jpg We're almost ready for you!! 7. I've done about all I can do to my carbs over the last couple of years and have done alright with fuel mileage. Usually pull between 36 and 40 mpg in town a running in traffic. I'm not all that gentle on the throttle most the time. I was happy with that. A good day is 42 to 44. I had a morning off for a change today so I took off and wandered around on the back roads for a while. Did about 300 miles. I've always wondered how far I could push the bike for miles before I ran it dry. I usually lose my last fuel bar about 140 miles and start looking for a pump. So today I filled a gallon gas can and put it in the side tank and figured I would find out. I kept my speed as close to 60 - 65 as I could for most the miles and lost my last bar at about 160 miles on the odo. Kept rolling until I got nervous as the last 45 miles were going to have to be Interstate. Stop and filled it up. 226.4 on the odo. Took 4.73 gallons. That figures to be 47.86 mpg. I got nuttin to complain about. I must have learned something hanging around here. Ok, So I did not get to answer one question I had. I know the tank is 5.3 gallons. I should have had about 1/2 of a gallon left. Any of you know about how much you can actually draw from the tank? Later, Mike
  8. Rode my 89 VR for an hour this morning then let it sit for an hour. Started it up again to to ride and it started right up but made a sawing or hising sound. I hit the stop button to kill the engine and it stopped. Started it up again and made the same noise. I listened for a couple seconds and decided that it is the starter that is not disengaging. Shut if off and started it up and this time the noise went away. My VR has 25,500 miles on it and only 1500 miles is mine. The 1st 24,000 was from South Lake Tahoe and in the winter months it was a garaged. And at my home it is also garaged. Any suggestions of what to check or to clean?
  9. I rode from Atlanta to DC last Thursday straight through, with only 1 long (1 1/2 hour) stop, other than gas and restroom stops. Just about did me in. 681 miles in just under 14 hours. Made me wonder what the record is for a continuous ride with only periodic breaks for gas, food, restroom, etc. Anybody know? How long was your longest ride in hours and miles?
  10. Getting ready for my 3700 mile trip at the end of June so I wanted to test a few new add ons. Put a new XL F4 Custom windshield with vent, and it works great. Left Salt Lake City headed to Las Vegas(425 miles) and it was 36 degrees Monday with a touch of snow on the ground. Ran into two big rain storms on the way and barely got wet. Was able to put RainX on the shield which really helped and the vent provided a nice flow of air when I got to hotter weather in Vegas. Towed my new to me Escapade trailer, and I didn't really know it was back there even in hard crosswinds and heavy rain. I'm not usually fan of tank bags but I picked a small one up from Motorcyclegear.com that's a perfect fit for the RSV. Holds my MP3 player, sunglasses, wallet and a few food bars, even has a map pocket, but I use a GPS. Head back to Salt Lake City on Saturday, weather looks better this time. I think I'm ready now. I will be doing an Iron Butt ride on the first leg, 923 miles. This will be my first. Longest one day total before was 793 miles.
  11. In the market for a new rear tire and was curious if anyone has had any experience with the Continental Milestones. Looking for how many miles you got out of them and how they handled on wet roads. Thanks in advance for the information. Phoenix
  12. I know some of you have done this... Riding down the highway...and a sharp rock pops up right in your tire path and run over it...you hear it and you feel it. I bet I have done it a dozen times over the course of several years...but today I was inspecting my Dunlop E3's and noticed my front tire had a very small "v" cut into the high rubber tread. I took a small screw driver and tried to "probe"it to see how deep and it APPEARS to be superficial...I only have 8000 miles on this front tire. It looks like it would be wore down after a few hundred miles... I know that they can all be different, but just curious if anyone else has done this before...and did you replace or continue to roll.
  13. http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn195/xxMPWATERDAWGxx/642463327_2297045414_0.jpg Picked this up yesterday. The guy used it as a tag a long, but it still has all the camper parts with it. I pulled it about 150 miles back home. First time pulling a trailer too, and it was a really good experience.
  14. Took a couple unused helmets to my cousin in Mapleton IA(he just got a bike, but no helmets). So from Lincoln NE to Mapleton IA and back taking the best roads we have here, it totalled about 340 miles. I know that isn't as much as some of you ride but for me and my bad back that is a HAUL. My girl had no real complaints either but we will see how we feel tomorrow. As we were pulling in the garage I notice a noise coming from the rear...creak,creak,creak... thinking it's the pins that everyone talks about. Not happy that it has an issue at less than 2500 miles... but debating if I should just do it myself or let the dealer have at it. I really don't like the dealer here at all. I just hope the pins is all it is. Great day here for a ride! Frank
  15. picked up my new to me 2002 last night. put about 150 miles on it getting it home and wife's car back. when I have a passenger on back, with the extra weight I am hearing a very noticeable dry rub sound when the rear is bounced up and Down, at least when sitting still with engine off. any ideas, am I in for a monetary surprise or are their some grease points that may be in need? bike has 28000 miles on it. bob
  16. After about three weeks of poor weather, work and other things. The wife and I finally got a few miles in. (even if it was on the wing) We rode about 40 miles one way for coffie. Despite the 40 mph cross winds at times she managed a few pic's and that cup of Tim Hortons coffie never tasted so good. The only problem was that it was only 40 miles home:cool10:
  17. In the Texas panhandle, I was lucky to get 30mpg on my 99 RSV, but here Kentucky Im averaging in the high 30's with a new high of 39mpg on today's fill up. It's the first time I've ever ridden the bike 200 miles on the same tank of fuel. Maybe it's finally broken in with 101,700 miles on it. About this time last year, I was complaining about not getting 160 miles to a tank of fuel!!
  18. ok guys i need some answers, with only 1100 miles on this new bike it seems to a lot hoter then my 06rsv after tracing down the main heat source it appears to be coming from the chrome clutch cover on the right side as sitting on the bike ( rear big cover). today i rode 5 miles and it was hot enough to feel thru my boot and pant leg after returning home i used a contact themp. and had a temp of 162 is this normal. i did check to insure the fan is running, the oil level ok only difference from the 06 is the chrome rad coveing,06 doesnt have one any suggestions thanks steve:confused24:
  19. I came into work Monday and one of our Harley guys told me about a Venture a guy had where he had just bought a small trail bike for his kid. The guy had posted on Craigs List and it looked pretty good. It turned out to be an 86 with 39.000 miles on it with some extra stuff. The guy that had it was a contractor and had done some work for a guy that couldn't come up with all money owed, so he threw in the bike. The guy that we bought it from said he had only put about 100 miles on it and he did more damage to the bike than the previous 24 years. He dropped it and broke a corner out of the right fairing and under the trunk. The bike has been sitting for a long time and will definately need a carb cleanning and sync. It has a new battery and does run, but only with the choke on, which is typical of clogged jets. Otherwise, the bike appears to be in really nice shape and should be roadworthy without too much work and money. We are going to need one of the rubber straps that hold the side panels on. The carbs still have the torque screws and appear to have not been touched, so it will probably need diaphragms. It has a nice Ventureline Back rest and it even has the lighted rear reflector that Big bike parts sold. It is the brown color and a little lighter that the brown 85 I bought a while back. As soon as we get the side panels back on it, I will try to post a couple of pictures of it. I think that will be a nice bike for Brian(Lil Venturous) as his wife wants to ride and the only thing she has ridden on with him was a souped up FZ1 and I don't think that went too well. RandyA
  20. Hi everyone first time posting here. I got a question? I have a 06 midnight venture with around 26000 miles on it and the more I drive it I notice a popping sound coming from the drive line only when im backing it out of my shead. Now it stops when I ride it a few miles and it dont seem to hurt anything? But when its been sitting a few days it pops alot when i back it out? I checked the rear end and it all looks good there. So any comments or sugestions would help. Be cool and ride ride ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. took a short spin around the block today actually went 354 miles the first ride on the 2010 rsv other then a few 1-2 miles here localy. i ma impressed with this bike there's no "whine" not that the 06 was bad but it has a slight one. the engne roar/rumble is really great on the 2010 one sounds more like a bike should,06 was very quite. but i did/do see what all of you have said about the bridgestones , there is a lot of tire noise. i averaged about 70mph and on 2 filol-ups i averaged 46mpg which is grea i now have a grand total of 804 miles on her i loved the 06 enough to buy another rsv and glad i did steve
  22. It seems that not all new owners of these bikes are getting the timely warning about how fast the stock rear brake pads wear out. Last Saturday we had three relatively new owners show up at the mini maintenance day who had not heard this - all three had between 12K-17K miles on their bikes, and the rear pads were shot on ALL of their bikes! At least two were actually metal-to-metal on the inside pad - can't say for certain on the third - his looked to be down that far when I inspected it, but I did not see the pads changed. Anyway - consider this just another attempt to get the word out to anyone who has not heard it yet - the stock Yamahaha rear brake pads will be GONE by 12,000 miles (especially the inside pad, which always wears faster)! If your 2nd gen bike has less than 20,000 miles on it and you do not KNOW that the rear pads have been changed to something other than stock Yamahaha pads, check them NOW! Goose (This is not a problem with the front pads - even stock front pads can be expected to last 40-50,000 miles.)
  23. I just wanted to throw this out and get some opinions. I am getting what feels like to be some sort of pinched nerve feeling in my upper back, just to the right of my left shoulder blade while riding the bike. It doesnt take long for it to show up, maybe after 20 minutes or so of riding. I can move around and make it go away, or start to feel better, but it is there. Not real painful, but more annoying than anything. I have only put about 500 miles on this bike, and I don't remember it happening on our old bike (1982 Honda Silver Wing Interstate with stock seats) both bikes backrest, as I just added one to our new bike. Its a 97 Royal Star Tour Classic with the Yamaha Comfort Cruise Seats by Corbin. The most that we have riden so far is 125 miles in one day but we have a 1200 mile trip coming up next weekend so I am looking for suggestions on what to do? I appreciate any input,.. I also wanted to ad that I am 45 years young, 6'0, 195Lbs
  24. I filled my tank up a few days back and have been riding back and forth to work in the rare Scottish sunshine, on my way home yesterday I noticed the fuel gauge dip and the "F" count begin, I anly had 78 miles since brimming her . Now I am riding solo and doing anywhere from 55 to 90 mph (mostly above 70 ) so it looks like I'll be lucky to get 100 miles to the tank before empty, unless I bumble around at 55 all day . However I never had any "Low fuel warning light appear" is this only on the Venture model as I can't see a low fuel light on the consol ? Cheers.
  25. Okay I know this exist but can't seem to find it. My better half and I are taking two long trips this year. Both are approx 2000 miles each way. We plan to break it up into 3 days then 2 weeks of riding the 3 days back and 1 to recoup before going back to work. Not that any of that has anything to do with my question but I am getting very excited about the trips. My question is this: I have a Garmin (older one) 2730, and a Nuvi. Is there a program that besides gives routing but will accept input as to how far to space fuel stops and suggest stations around that area. IE I will want to refuel every 225 - 250 miles. (I have a 27 gallon tank but only get about 11-12 mpg when towing the bikes. (sucks) So my range is a bit over 300 miles per tank but don't want to push it.I can find the info with Mapquest but it is a real pain. Is there a better way?
