  1. I put a 4 gig in mine.. the Zumo is limited to reading the first 1000 songs with the latestest firmware. 500 on the old firmware. It also will only read MP3s no other music format. If you have a PC with Windows XP and use MediaPlayer 11 all you do when you rip a CD is select MP3 as the target file type and save it to your PC.. You will want to select bit rate of 196 or higher... higher the better quality but uses more space on the SD card. Then you plug your Zumo into the USB port on the PC,, select sync on MP 11, it will give you a choice of syncing to the Zumo memory or the Zumo SD memory card.. Obviously you select the SD card.. It will then sync the two and put all the music you have ripped on the PC on the SD card. MP 11 will automatically put them in seperate folders by album. It will also automatically update the ID3 info so the Zumo knows the music style, artist and album name for searching. If you already have music on your PC you will want to convert it to MP3 before you do this. Or if you have more than 1000 songs on your PC you will want to select only the ones you want to transfer. I have about 600 songs on my 4 gig SD and it leaves my about 1.2 gig. Any extra room on the SD card can be used to hold extra maps7 routes, waypoints, and regions after you run out of room in the Zumo's main memory.. these extras in SD cannot be used until they are loaded to the main memory so something in main memory you are using would have to be deleted.. I have not done it yet so not positive on how it works, but I plan on putting all the maps, routes and waypoints I may need on the SD card including the one I normally have in main memory to use so if I have to delete it to load another, I still have the originals on the SD card to reload. I have also been told to make a copy of everything in the Zumo main memory and save it to my PC, then I can play with deleting extra vehicles and voices and anything else I don't really need to make more room in main memory for maps.
  2. I have ridden the LT a few times,, it was a real close call between the RSV and the LT for me. The bike is much quieter, handles the twisties much better, yet still is comfortable just cruising along. It takes a little while to get use to the difference in controls, but not too bad. The new ABS brakes seem fine. Maintenance cost can be high but there are plenty of people over at their specific forum that can help you out, much like here on the RSV. I have also attended one of their annual rallies, the CCR. It is a heck of a nice get together. I had a few reasons for opting for the RSV over the LT, 1. To me the RSV was just a little more comfortable. 2. they have a fairly high rear shaft spline failure rate, from what I gathered from the forum around 10% will fail between 25k and 45k. BMW does not want to admit there is an issue (sound familiar) 3. There just are not that many dealerships around the country if you do need service, they have less dealerships in the US than KTM. (To be fair, everyone that had a problem under the three year warranty said the nearest dealership, no matter how far away, was good about taking care of them and their extra expenses on the road, it just sometimes took awhile for them to get there.) As far as price, if you buy new they BMW is a bit more, but because of the limited market for BMWs they go down in price faster than Wings, so used are around the same price as a used RSVs. There always seem to be a few used ones listed over on their forum. http://www.bmwlt.com/forums

    Chirp

There are several places a chirp noise can come from, but THE CHIRP that may or may not be curable is from the gears on the clutch basket if I have my info right. Sometimes switching to synthetic oil will reduce it enough to not be annoying, as in the case of my RSV, others have had to have the clutch basket replaced with the I basket, and others have not been able to get rid of it at all.

    FRS radio

If the FRS radio has a standard mic-in jack the Buddyrich cable for the Zumo 550 should work fine. It is a cable that splices into the intercom wiring harness under the fairing with a cable to plug into a mic-in jack so the same helmet mike you use for the intercom sends voice to whatever it is plugged into. The only caveat is that unlike the CB it will not allow the passenger to talk across the radio.
  5. I personally now use the Mobil 1 motorcycle specific oil even though it is more expensive. I figure if I can afford an RSV I can afford motorcycle oil.. But for many years I used Mobil 1 auto oil in all my motorcycles with no problems. Any Mobil 1 that does NOT say "energy conserving" in the little API circle on the back of the bottle would be fine. You use to be able to tell by the red caps, all red cap bottles were non-energy conserving, but in the last few years they have changed the packaging and you now need to read the back to be sure.
  6. The old BMW K75 inline three was very quiet for a standard motorcycle. http://www.bmwmc.dk/images/Walls_3/BMW%20k75%20text.jpg Has anyone head one of these? I would think they are pretty quiet. http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2005models/2005-MotoGuzzi-Breva1100a-small.jpg
  7. BMW LT seemed quieter to me.
  8. Don't know if this will be good or bad for Husqvarna.
  9. I was under the impression the "clutch ball" would last as long as the bike remained parked !!
  10. I grab the clutch, down shift to third, assuming it is good from 30 to 90mph. If the next gear I'll need will be 1st or 2nd as I get under 30 I shift to it. I use mostly front brake and don't bother to engine brake very often. Left over techniques from racing dirtbikes. Engine braking never worked well on them 2-strokes.
  11. I just got a Zumo 550 for my bike.. comes with a bike and a car mount so you can move it back and forth.. Seems to work very well, I actually have the voice turned off and just read the directions so it doesn't talk over the built in MP3 player.. I also added a 4 gig SD mem card and have it loaded with about 500 songs and still have 1.2 gig left. Zumo 550 is limited to 1000 songs no matter how big a mem card you put in.. But the more songs you have the longer it take the Zumo to finish booting up, so I wouldn't want to go over 1000 anyway. Once you figure out how to turn up both hard and soft volumes on the 550 it is pretty loud and clear through the bike's system. So I would think you would be able to hear it through the speakers fairly well.
  12. I'm pretty sure this is one of the pics he meant to attach.
  13. Wasn't quite that cut and dry,, Snell helmets actually were more protection against blows from square edged objects and penetration. Some DOT were better against flat objects. And some DOT helmets were just crap.
  14. The pictures are not showing up!
  15. Not only do I always wear a helmet, I always wear a full face helmet. Even when just going a mile down to the store and back.. And while on that mile and back I might not wear my armored gloves and armored jacket, I usually wear them too, no matter how hot it is.
  16. Since I got my Zumo and added a 4Gig card for music, I think when my XM subs runs out I will not renew,, I'll take the money I would have spent and buy my wife a good MP3 player and dock for her car and be done with it.

    WOW!!!

Seems pretty self explanatory to me
  18. One other piece of info for those that don't know,, if the unit seems to have low output volume, there are two volumes in the Zumo.. one is the on screen where you choose the percent of volume for either directions or music. Then there is the hard button volume by hitting the button the looks like a speaker and then using the actual + and - buttons.. (this causes the yellow volume bars on the screen to move up and down) The hard volume only works when the unit is in a powered mount!!!
  19. Have you tried Bikebandit.com they show them still available, (that doesn't always mean anything) but at $449 per side I would go with after market anyway. personally I'd go with these. http://www.hoese.com/stores/showdetl.cfm?&DID=13&Product_ID=34&CATID=3&Product=Cross_Country_Saddlebags_for_Road_Star
  20. Statistics have shown that a shotgun it more effective for home protection than a handgun. But as Juggler said, there are other thing to do first. I was taught to shoot when I was 7, I hunted and practiced with all sorts of guns and when in the military was a marksman with 45s. I don't own a handgun or a shotgun as I no longer hunt, and don't feel it is that much protection in the home. If someone breaks in with gun, will you have time to get your gun? Probably not unless it is left out, (which is illegal some places) and then there is a chance it will be used accidentally by someone other than you. And if you don't get to it in time, the first thing they are going to do is steal it. If they don't have a gun, the aluminum bats I have (some from when I played softball, some from when I coached my son's little league team) are pretty good defense. Also my 19 year old son, who still lives at home, has a 42in broad sword in his room. The only gun I own is a .22 long rifle. My dad bought it with his first paycheck when he was 16, he taught me to shoot with it when I was 7, and the only reason I keep it is because it was left to me.
  21. I personally will not buy an air cooled bike, and much prefer the V-4 to a V-twin.. Oh and Wings are rated at 118 hp, 125 lb-ft. That is at the crank, I understand it is 103hp at the rear wheel.
  22. Yes,, but don't bother converting,, it is a pain, and then you will have to add or modify the ID3 tags or the Zumo will not be able to categorize the songs, they will just list as name and unknown artist, unknown album. I just went through this.. the easiest way to do it is to upgrade to Micorsoft Media Player 11. Needs Windows XP. It allows ripping straight to MP3 and converting to MP3 and it takes care of all the ID3 tags.. It also allows you to sync to the Zumo SD card and it automatically loads anything you have in the WMP 11 library to the SD card. As far as size of card, the Zumo has no limit, but it can only index 1000 songs (500 if you don't have the latest firmware) I have a 4G card with right at 500 songs and still have 1.2 G left. Also you want to use at least 196 bit MP3 conversion, less than that can have a noticeably reduced quality. Bit rate of 196 may not sound all that good on a quality sound system.
  23. Really I find the actual work needed to work on carbs not that big a deal, and not that hard. The big deal comes with multi cylinder engines saving on space and making it almost impossible to get the carbs off to work on them. With a little tuning and practice carbs are very viable, but do suffer a bit on long trips with elevation changes, and fuel differences. FI is much more forgiving as it automatically changes as necessary for elevation and fuel differences. It also reduces emissions and gets consistently better fuel mileage. But as the technology grows, EPA will continue to add regulations that will make it harder and more expensive to modify electronically controlled engines for those that enjoy working on their machines and like to modify them for performance. For me FI would be better as I very seldom do anything to my carbs, and if I had FI I would never do anything to it. No back when I dirt biked, I played with carbs all the time, and enjoyed it. But pulling a carb off a motocross bike to put in on the bench was usually only 4 or 5 screws and one cable, and there was room to get my whole hand in there to do it.
  24. The Venture has carburetors, all politicians lie, and Elvis is dead. Just things you have to learn to live with.
  25. Hills, in Iowa? :rotfl:Yeah, we got some nice "hills" along the Saint John's river here in Florida too!!!
