  1. I'm posting this for a friend. 83 venture standard. Bike was not charging the battery. Tested the stator, it was grounded, only getting 5 amps ac, average on all 3 sets of white wires, tested the r/r, it also tested bad with open diodes. He installed a new stator and r/r, both ricks motorsports parts, however he got them from dennis kirk. I don't know if they are the same parts that Rick on this website sells or not. The bike is still not charging. Volt meter reads 12 volts not running, when it is running, it drops to 11.5 volts. Even when running up to 2000 rpms, battery voltage does not go above 12 volts. Just for information; he has a gel battery. I thought I read somewhere that gel batteries do not charge like flooded batteries. Does anyone here have any ideas or something else to look for?
  2. My first thought was, and maybe others might wonder, what exactly do you mean, "overheated"? Smoke coming from brakes? Lost rear braking all together?
  3. AWESOME, I love it. My wife screams at me for slightly gettin on the fun wheel. Now what clutch setup is best for my 1st gen?
  4. My condolences go out to his family and friends. I always hate to hear about the good people taken away too early. Very sorry for the loss! KW
  5. Yes, I had both stator and r/r disconnected, r/r out of bike. Looks like bad news.
  6. I'm helping a friend with his 83 venture, not charging, at all. At the 3 white wires from the stator, I am getting between 9-11 volts on all white wires, however, when I measure from any white wire from the stator to grd, I am getting continuity. As I understand, there should be no continuity from the stator wires to grd. Also, I have tested the diodes in the rectifier, with a DVOM on the diode test position, and I have continuity in both directions, on all diodes except 2. Again, as I understand, there should only be continuity in one direction of a diode, so that fails the r/r as well. My question is, am I right in these conclusions, or am I missing something. Also, I think this is an aftermarket r/r. It has the 3 white wires, 2 black wires and 2 red wires. Also, there is no brown wire, which I read in previous posts, this is a voltage sense wire for the factory original r/r, not the aftermarkets. All comments will be appreciated, thanks.
  7. Going from the 96 Sub to the 06 Avalanche will be like driving a moped and then hopping on an RSV. You will love it!
  8. Dennis kirk has windshields for the 1st gens. My neighbor got one, it is an aftermarket, it is 1 1/2" taller than the stock one. I tried it on mine and the buffeting of the helmet was better than the stock w/s. I think it went for $85.00. I think the brand was slipstream.
  9. The brace on my 83 looks like polished aluminum, is this the OEM brace? My bike feels very unstable in tight corners; also while at highway speeds, it does not track straight. Will the black braces help these concerns?
  10. That is too cool, my kids would be freaking out if I brought that home. I haven't found a really cool roadside find like that in quite a while. Last time was about 3 years ago, a power wheels jeep and extreme machine. New batteries and the kids had their own demolition derby. Oh what fun to be a kid again. Oh wait....wifey says I AM.... still a kid.
  11. What is the benefit of this fork brace?
  12. I'm 42, my wife yells at me like one of my children. I am also a 20 year old trapped in an older body. I am still doin wheelies on my sons dirt bike. I personally wouldn't recommend this bike to a beginner, because of the power and weight, but for an experienced rider,...........THESE BIKES ROCK!!!
  13. I'm at a loss........other than whats stated above!
  14. DEFINITELY YES... This will cause interference with audio wires. If it is possible, run the wires on opposite sides of the bike. Example, keep audio wires on one side and the wires for the r/r on the other.
  15. I am wondering if the valves are adjusted properly. I have experienced back firing thru the intake, of cars, and both times it was just after someone had been inside the engine and had the valves adjusted incorrectly. I am not saying this is the problem, but it is possible. Did the bike run good after the valve adjustment was done?
  16. I agree. My brain shaking, loud camaro at the race track is all the loud I need. When I'm cruisin on the bike, I like it mello, with a little throttle therapy at my finger tips added.
  17. Ray, I sent you a message with my address. Let me know if I messed up and you didn't get it. Thanks again Kevin
  18. Sorry I have not gotten back to ya earlier, been a busy Friday. If your offer is still good, I will take you up on your offer. How do you prefer to do this?
  19. Thanks for all the info and ideas. I would like to keep the stock radio and add an input for an mp3 player. I am going to keep tinkering with the amp and see if I can get her fiqured out. It was a beautiful ride to work today, even with only the left side speaker. I disconnected the right speaker and no crackling at all. Thanks again for the input from everyone.
  20. I am fighting a crackling on the right speaker. It only happens when I am driving down the road. I could get it to happen by wiggling wires and have now determined that it is inside the amplifier. I have had the amplifier apart and looked for loose solder points or cracked circuit boards, can't find anything. I am getting frustrated. I would like to keep the factory radio for now, however, I think I may be getting close to giving up and switching to an aftermarket stereo. My question to everyone is, are you still using the factory radio or have most people switched to an aftermarket stereo? If you have switched, how did you install the aftermarket stereo?
  21. Hey Mark, I know this is going to get a lot of attention from people, but here goes. I use rotella 15w40 in my engine. I do get some clutch slippage if I am really gettin on the fun handle. However, I rarely do, so I live with it for now. I have checked my clutches and they are fine, so for now, I say, live and let live. Coolant, you can use either the ethlyene glychol(green) or the long life,(orange) just stay with either, once you have decided. You should flush out the cooling system before changing to a different type. The rear end I use 80w90 synthetic and don't forget to do your rear spline maintenance. Most people say the Honda Moly 60 paste is the best, others will disagree. I found the Honda Moly in a 3oz. tube on Ebay for 11 bucks shipped for free to my house, can't beat that. Get her on the road and enjoy the ride!
  22. I know there has been a lot of discussion about tires in the past. I am not going to claim to be a tire expert, however, when I asked about tires at a very reputable bike shop. I was told that the Elite 3's from dunlop were a very good choice. I have them on my bike, been on for 6000 miles now, they are wearing good, plenty of traction and still have a lot of tread left. The only question I would ask is, would it be a good idea to install different brands on front and rear? I am sure there will be many opinions and ideas on this subject.
  23. I am wondering if my bikes fuel gauge is operating normally. Someone in another post said with one or two bars left on the fuel ga. they had gone 110 miles. My gauge, with two bars left, only takes about 2.5 gals to fill it back up. Is this normal with these gauges? My trip odometer does not work, however, a round trip to work and back is about 100 miles. When I refill, it usually takes about 2.5 gals.
