Brenner- My comments come from the miniscule amount of painting I've done. Primer is designed to seal the surface before applying paint. In metal it prevents it from rusting until you apply the paint, in wood or drywall it dries quickly to prevent the material from absorbing the final paint thus showing the wood grain or joints. ABS plastic doesn't have either issue. When I painted my '86, I repaired the damage and prepped it by using a wax remover. Wax or polish will cause the paint to bubble or frog-eye as it dries. Next was to spray the surface with a binding agent, this is made to help the paint adhere to the plastic. Next is to paint and then clear coat. Some painters recommend to paint with clear coat first to even out the surface of minor variations. I've painted four bikes using this process and never used primer and while the jobs show my amateur abilities, I haven't had any other issues with the adhering or finish. Good luck!!

The magic age is 59 1/2, there are exemptions. The exemptions can be found in the instructions for IRS form 5329, page 3. If the reason for the loan fits the exemption or the reason for default fits, take the exemption.

1986 Venture Royale carburator
utadventure replied to jjjones's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
These bikes run better with the air box on. If you don't see the sliders moving, either the sliders are sticking or the diaphrams are bad. Check the diaphrams out and make sure they don't have holes and that they are installed properly. If the diaphrams are good, from inside, gently pry the sliders outwards with a screw driver and see if they free up. DON'T pull them from the outside!!! You can guess how I know not to do that. Good luck. -
Well.....when the sun is out and the temp is almost 70....you get the bikes out and go visit the grandkids. What a beautiful day we had. Only go in about 50 miles but it was so much fun to get out. Next Saturday is projected to be 67, I think I know part of what Valentine's days plans will be. Dave

EBC HH Front and Rear Brake Pads
utadventure replied to camos's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Front and Rear are he same pads. I tried some other brands and got a squeek at stopping. https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/1889/21960/EBC-Brake-Pad-Sintered-Double-H?v=8073 Good luck!! -
With the work you've done. Hook a volt meter to the battery and start the bike, then check the voltage at the battery (check both the battery leads and the terminals - voltage should be the same) at both idle and about 2500 rpm. That is a quick test to whether your charging system is working.

Chaharly- Do you think the uncontrolled wobble had anything to do with the car tire you just installed? Dave

At one time I think these were recommended as the best place and they may even have given a special price for VR.org members. http://www.siriusconinc.com/pro-detail.php?pid=&product_id=1794

cranks but won't start
utadventure replied to AngryAmish's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Pull a plug wire and insert a fresh plug, hold the plug against the engine (not with your hand) using insulated pliers and crank the starter. You should be able to see the spark. It's helpful if you're in a darkened area like a garage. -

89 backrest for my poor back...OEM would be nice.
utadventure replied to videoarizona's topic in Watering Hole
I added an Utopia backrest to the '86 and loved it! I got the removable backrest which was great for when Jan joined me. -
Windshield
utadventure replied to yooper's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Clearview makes a great windshield and is offering some good prices for the start of the year. I've had their oversize shield on my '86 for a few years and love it! -
MP3 input jack in place of tape player
utadventure replied to fixit3546's topic in General Tech Talk
I replaced the tape deck with an MP3 port years ago. Used a piece of abs plastic to replace the missing take deck. Remove the deck and unplug it from the cable going to the audio system. I bought an matching 8 pin din plug from a local electronics part store. In the abs plastic, I installed a switch and a female 3.5mm stereo jack. Wire the switch to pins 1 and 7. On will override the am/fm as though the cassette player was on. Wire the stereo plug to pins 3,4, and 5 (i belive 4 is the ground pin, with 3 and 5 being he left and right channels) Not really very hard and easy to remove and install. If you plug into the port and play music, it will sometimes override the radio without throwing the switch. Good luck!! -
The CB uses the motorcycle as a ground plane. The ideal place would be directly in the center of the bike but that is unrealistic. If in the center of the bike the area of transmission would be an oval reaching furthest out the front and rear of the bike. If the antenna is placed on the right rear, the transmission area is eggish in shape with the furthest out the front and left of the bike. On the left rear, it is egg shaped out the front and right of bike. For the limited area we usually need to communicate with bikes in a group, either will work about the same. Radio antennas are to receive only (thus the length isn't as critical) and will work equally as well on either side.

Prayer request for Black Owl

We will add our prayers as well for a full recovery. -
I just had a head gasket done on my Ford 4.6L Triton. The head bolts are made to torque to the specified amount and then be tightened an additional amount. As they are tightened, the bolts stretch. This deforms the bolts, which is the reason for replacing them when redoing heads.

My Brother-in-Law gave it back.
utadventure replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Herb- I can't answer if all '83s had the third bleeder valve but I had trouble finding mine on the '86 at first. Remove the false tank cover allows you to see it up near the triple tree. I initially thought I was was seeing an air schrader valve. Hope it helps. Dave
