I had the oversize w/vent from Clearview on my '86. Last year I needed a screen on the '99 and decided to try the F4 w/vent. I've been happy with both brands. Last week I took a long trip with friends, the F4 handled rain, a few small rock and a bird. Not a scratch to be seen. I wouldn't hesitate to have either on my bike. Dave

I've always been more of a destination type rider while willing to enjoy the scenery along the way. Last weekend when I was invited to go with a new group to ride Beartooth Pass. Thursday we rode from Salt Lake City to Ashton, ID. Normally I would make the 275 mile trip on a mostly direct route, maybe throw in a few back rodes that would be parallel to the direct route. This group zig zagged back and forth over the mountain passes until we had ridden 410 miles and seen a lot of beautiful roads. This was a little bit of an emotional challenge of a way to ride but fulfilling when I could just ride along and relax. Friday we took the ride from Ashton to Cody, WY by the long way through Yellowstone, out the NE entrance, through Cooke City and down Chief Joseph Hwy. We stopped for a little bit at Mesa Falls. It was a beautiful visit. Saturday was a great adventure as we rode to Red Lodge on the east end of Beartooth Pass. We rode up over the top to the west end, had a nice lunch at Cooke City and then rode back to Red Lodge. That completed rides 6 and 7 over Beartooth. Sunday we rode some back roads back home as we needed to arrive and enjoy some family time. It was a great ride and a learning experience. Added a few pics along the way. I rode with a neighbor, Paul Tew and his son Gary. http://s470.photobucket.com/user/utadventure/library/2015%20Beartooth%20Pass%20Guys%20Trip?sort=3&page=1

If I remember correctly the combined cable/antenna length for a CB radio to work correctly (not receive feedback on transmit)is 10 meters. It might receive transmission by others but will not transmit out well and will damage the radio over time if it's not tuned (SWR Meter). Many antennas, like the OEM, have a center coil to meet the length requirement. Harley places a coil inside the saddlebag, and others like Firestik, have additional length coiled around the antenna (usually visible underneath the outer rap). Firestik recommended that the cable length between the mounting stud and radio be 18' long in order to have the proper over all length when I replaced the antenna on my '86. Other lengths may work but are typically done in 3' increments.

Alan and Annie are alive, awake and doing well at our place in Utah! So glad to have them spend a little time here before they head to the International Rally (wish we could join them). Off to the theatre to see a live production of Grease. And, of course, we had to stop by the local Ice Cream shop this afternoon.

Drilling a hole at the end of the crack is the first step. I used the ABS glue to mend the crack and then layered some fiberglass to reinforce it. Held up on my '86 for almost 10 years now. Dave

Antenna spark plug
utadventure replied to Clauddvon's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
what you have is the sealed, prewired antenna base for the OEM CB antenna. You can see where the cable has been cut on the bottom. I would suggest that you get an after market antenna. I put the Firestik II on my '86 and it worked great....I will do the same if my '99 ever fails. -

Electrical Problem
utadventure replied to Morev4's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Have you switched the original glass fuse holder for a new ATC type? An intermitten bad connection at the fuse holder could cause the fuse to blow. -
So, the saddle got sore. You still got 756 great miles!

Sorry we didn't get to meet up with you as you came through Salt Lake City.

BUB re-pack or Harley Ultra Classic pipes-HELP?

I've been looking at picking this up from Grainer's to repack a muffler set I have....any opinions? http://www.grainger.com/product/UNITHERM-Ceramic-Insulation-23AR48?s_pp=false&picUrl=//static.grainger.com/rp/s/is/image/Grainger/23AR48_AS01?$smthumb$ -
E3's have been a choice of a lot of the riders for the tires but it's a lot of personal preference. Rivco has had a center stand you can add. Most use a MC jack. Because of potential damage to components underneath, there is a jack adapter made by Carbon One. Print and carry the VR list with you. If you have a problem, there is likely someone not to far away that can give you a hand or might have a sync tool to do it on your trip. Dave

speedometer quit, odometer OK
utadventure replied to venturesome's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
if the odo is still working, I would suspect that the speedo is working too, just the needle portion isn't indicating the speed. -
Yamaha only uses three wires for the speakers. If I remember correctly (there is a wiring diagham on the site) plug 3 is LF, 2 is GND, and 5 is RT on the 5-pin DIN plug.

faulty pressure sensor
utadventure replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gary- With the bike running, have you looked down into the carbs and made sure the slides are moving? Checked the diaphrams for holes? Check the mixture screws and reset them out 2 3/4 turns. Turn the sync screws out so the butterflys are not adversely effected and re-sync the carbs (I'm hoping you can a high enough RPM to do it) - this is also verify that the vacuum ports on the carbs aren't plugged. side bags won't open.
utadventure replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gary- I know this sounds real basic, but if the labels are gone or illegible......the bag locks have three positions, straight up/down on the trunk and across the saddlebags is the latched/unlocked position. Turn the key to the left and the bag is locked, to the right and it releases/retracts that latch to open. Sometimes causing the bags to close a little bit more as you turn the key will reduce the friction and allow full retraction of the bolt. Dave -
If you already have a headset for your helmet and the mic boom is the only concern, many can be unplugged and removed. Or, as DJH3 says, with a 3.5mm jack and an old AT computer extension cord you can make one pretty inexpensively.

Check out Edsets, they make a great product! http://www.edsets.com/universal_adapter.php

If you go on the Million Dollar Highway (highly suggested) stop by Mesa Verde Natl Park. From there you can make a loop over the Moab Utah and see Arches Natl Park and Canyonlands Natl Park. Back over into Colorado via I70 and over Independence Pass. Travel safe!!

HELP!! rear caliper wont decompress...
utadventure replied to midnightrider1300's topic in Watering Hole
I have had that and it was because of grime on the outside of the piston. I actually had to cause them to extend a little further so I could clean them and then compress them back in. I then worked them in and out a few times to make sure they were functioning correctly.
