  1. I had to replace mine with the new stator. One of the connections, the plastic had melted into the R/R. Dave
  2. Just went through this on my '99 Venture. Put a voltage meter across the battery. Should read 12.6 if full charged. Start the bike and put the meter on again.....should read 13.0+ volts and increase if you rev the bike up. First thing.....pull the battery (how old is it?) and take it down and have it tested....this is usually free. It could be the battery is done for. From there you can go on to testing the voltage at the stator connector. If all is good there, then the regulator/rectifier is suspect. Most dealers can get parts in a couple of days but you'll pay more for it. Good luck! Dave
  3. I went to fill the '99 the other day and it wouldn't start at the station. I was able to use my Anti-Grav and start the bike and get back home about 1/2 mile. My first instinct with the voltage readings was that the Reg/Rec was faulty. I ordered a new one and when I went to install it, I noticed the connector had partially melted in the R/R. This gave me hope!! But with the new one, it was the same. The next likely issue was the stator. I took it to a trusted shop to have changed out. This is what they found: Just a little burnt! They have installed the new OEM stator, soldered the three white wires instead of a connector. Now the battery shows 12.7 volts and measures 13.67 while running at idle. I'll be taking more measurements tomorrow. Thanks Condor for the help and direction. I doubt the old R/R is faulty (other than the melted connector), so I'm keeping it as a spare, if ever needed. :cool10:
  4. I think Randy is absolutely right regarding the economy. People will resist buying new in a poor economy. Work with a trusted attorney and form a company in your state that will protect you and your family personally. Verify that there aren't any outstanding tax or legal issues. Dave

I have a the Commander on the back of the '86 and it's been great! Dave
  6. I had pretty consistent backfiring on the '99 until I put the stock mufflers back on. That solved 99% of the backfiring. After completing a tune up and carb adjust/sync, no more backfire. Dave
  7. I'm from Taylorsville (suburb of Salt Lake). Glad to meet up! Getting a new stator in the 99 but still have the '86 There are a few on Yamahas I meet up with and the Star Chapter in neighboring Provo area is very active and I know on of there principal down there. Dave
  8. What a huge loss. Sorry to hear of his passing and prayers for his loved ones.
  9. I don't believe any of the 1st gen 1300s had YICS. It's possible that your air box isn't seated completely or the air boots are cracked. You may want to spray around the boots and see if you get an increase in rpms. This will indicate an air leak. You will also want to check your diaphrams and make sure there aren't holes. Dave
  10. Last year I was invited by a friend to go ride Beartooth Pass. First stop was 275 miles from Salt Lake in Ashton, ID. It only took us 410 miles to get there. We saw some great country as we passed back and forth over the mountains. Day two was similar. Through Yellowstone, out the NE entrance of the park, partway across Hwy 212 and down Chief Joseph Hwy into Cody, WY. Day three was up to Red Lodge and across Beartooth to Cooke City for lunch, then back over Beartooth to Red Lodge and into Cody again. Final day was a straight shot back to Salt Lake via Yellowstone, Gran Teton and Jackson, WY only to find the sewer at home was backed up. I should have kept riding!!
  11. Find a time and come over. I'll give you a hand and get to know you! Dave Taylorsville
  12. Two things that helped me. 1. Get a grease and wax cleaner to make sure the surface to be painted is very clean. 2. The make a spray (rattle can) that assists the paint to adhere to plastic. I painted the trunk on my '86 ten years ago and it still looks good (well as good as it did then). I'm not a pro by any stretch. Dave
  13. Our son endured bullying for several years before we caught on. Telling the school put them into action! Do it!! Another action we took was to put him, and later his siblings, into a private school where he could relax and heal. We were lucky to have that option. Call me and I'll explain/talk if you want. Dave
  14. John I have the tallest, widest Clearview windscreen (with vent) on my '86. It's been great! I don't mind looking through the windscreen and the buffeting is greatly dimiished for both of us. I have the F4 tall, wide on my '99, with vent, and have had the same success. John @ clearview was great to work with. When I sent an email showing that the vent was installed on a slant, he rushed a replacement right out and had the original picked up. Good luck! Dave
  15. What a special person!! Prayers for Russell. Heal well! Dave & Jan
  16. My friend has a Goldwing 1500 and indicated that the alternator on the 1500 are an issue. He has replaced his twice. Dave
  17. Larry One thing you can do is go into your device manager and remove the Network Interface Card. Then shutdown the computer (power off). Give it a few minutes and restart. On restart it should find and reinstall you NIC. Dave
  18. This is a frame ( I also have some miscellaneous parts) only but the power plant and drive system are long gone.
  19. Van- I have an '86 frame (salvage title) here in Utah. You can have it and then you can have two bikes! Take what you need to fix the parts bike you just got
  20. Got on with my sweetheart, rode to the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon and enjoyed dinner with friends. Much better than the 100 heat in the valley.
  21. I also understand you can use 4 hockey pucks to prevent damage when using a bike jack.....don't know if you can find any in Canada I have an adapter....they work great!!! Best option in my opinion. Dave
  22. I bought a set of the Diamond R. As mentioned above, they work great for shorter legs. Jan is tall and has long legs. I removed the center bolt and remounted the passenger pegs in a permanent forward position. It took a little be for me to adjust to them being there but it works. They still leave Jan with her knees upward so she takes a set of soccer shin guards on the back of her legs and is able to stretch out. If I need to stop she has to pull up her legs but otherwise it works great!! Dave
  23. Most antennas will work fine with the reception on the AM/FM radio, the antenna for the CB is a bit different. Some antennas may work relatively well with the reception on the CB but unless the total antenna (cable and antenna) is the proper length, and is matched to the CB, transmitting will be poor and may actually be damaging to the CB radio itself. You'll notice on the Venture CB antenna a larger black area about mid point of the antenna. This is center load where additional wire is wrapped inside in order to allow the antenna to be the proper length (10 meters, if I remember correctly). Other antennas, like Harley, have additional wire (load) under the removable panel in the saddlebag to allow their smaller antenna for the CB. The firestik antennas that many change over to has an adjustable tip to allow for tuning (matching) the antenna system to the radio with a SWR meter. I hope the info helps in your process of changing the antennas!! Dave
  24. We had a wonderful time in Castlegar. A big thanks to Rick and Nina!!! Here's the pics we took: http://s470.photobucket.com/user/utadventure/library/2016%20BC%20Rally?sort=3&page=1
  25. Octane isn't a cleaning agent. It is an additive to retard the ignition of the fuel based on the compression of the engine. If I remember correctly, 87 octane is what the manual calls for. Sea Foam is a great product for keeping the bikes fuel system clean. Dave
