  1. Another vote for the SilverT side! The fact that they put a 5 year warranty on that motor (with some bikes reaching 100k miles in that time) I believe they would want the lesser interval if they knew it would make a difference on the longevity of the motor. On a side note, I have a friend in the vending business and he uses nissan, toyota, ect trucks in his fleet. Buys a new truck, Changes the oil the first time then never again! . He replaces the trucks at 150k and has very little problems with them. So you wonder what happens to the poor fool that buys them? One of his employees bought one and now has 275k miles on it! So much for regular oil changes..
  2. There is alot more to changing the oil than just changing the oil. Take a look at your owners manual and or service manual and jump in . There isn't to much you cant do. It will just take you longer than the dealer. I doubt the dealer does all that is necessary.
  3. I use to do that until I bought the equipment to do it myself. Ive done a half dozen tires now and think I'm way ahead in the bank. The dealer never did more than just change the tire. I do all the greasing ect and its a good time to really clean the hidey parts on the bike.
  4. I love the desert on my bike.. just not in the hell they call summer! Bev and I ride the desert every spring or fall. I'd rent a car to see the sights in August. Actually, if you have never been to Vegas you will probably not get thru all the sights on the strip in a weeks time and you can walk or ride the tram to all of thoses.
  5. Your numbers match mine pretty close. Both of my 07 ventures did the exact same thing as far as fuel. Always two up riding I normally get 150 to 160 and the f-gauge pops up( light comes on about 5 miles later). A fill up at the f-guage point is always 4.3 us gal. Once I had to push 50 miles on the f-guage driving 40 to 50mph not knowing were the next station was and it took 5.6 gals. I still wonder how much further I could have gone since I dont know how much is usable fuel in that tank.
  6. Rod. I took the course a couple years back and burned up the clutch. It still got me home but I noticed when I acelerated hard it would slip. That one cost me $160 bucks. A year later at a rodeo event I managed to do it again but this time I decided to look into it myself and found that it was really only that half disc that was burned. The others were fine so i put in a pcw kit and that was the end of my problems. Of course I wont do another rodeo but I may be willing to take the advance course again and just accept the fact that I'll be replacing the plates.
  7. At 16 I thought my father was the dumbest person in the world. When I was 26 I was amazed at how much he had Learned in just 10 years.
  8. Bev and I live along the pacific coast hwy and once you get here the heat isnt a factor as long as you keep close to the ocean on the way back up the coast. Its a beautiful ride up hwy 1 but I tend to have enough coast about the time i get to washington and head inland a bit. We have been caught in the western states heat in the summer and have said "never again". Death Valley and the desert is beautiful in the spring or fall though. I love that "wide open" riding. We plan our big trips in the spring and fall just to avoid the heat. Usually around the middle of may or at the end of sept is when we start out. Another option for making it through those western states if you get stuck there in june, july or august is to ride at night or get up in the wee hrs of the morning. Good luck with you planning...
  9. I really like this one from custom dynamics for $22. Its lights three leds on always then all on for brake. Its a pretty good contrast. The end holes of the bar lined up to the trunk mounts with just a slight bit of reaming. I had another version on my old venture but it required adapters and hung a bit low blocking the licence plate. All the lights were on and just got brighter with the brake. http://www.customdynamics.com/Light_bars.htm
  10. Have you been in the lower farings lately. If a vacuum hose slips off you will get that error. I had mine in the shop and when I picked it up on the ride home no cruise. Just the light blinking. Went back to the shop and found the mechanic had left a hose off.
  11. Hey condor. Ive got a set of just the rubber i took off when I put heated grips. That was my first priorty when I got the new 07 so they only have a few gripping miles on them. I dont know how much I streched them out when I took them off but I did it pretty careful. Anyway, shoot a pm with your address and they are on there way to you FREE!
  12. Been there done that Seaking! I took the advance course a couple years back and on the 40 mile drive home I noticed the clutch was slipping. $160 bucks later I had a new clutch in the bike. Fast forward a year to a star rally in reno where I decided to try the rodeo. After running 5 circuts in the rodeo the old familar slip came back. This time i decided to learn to do it myself and put a pcw kit in. I don't think there is anything wrong with the clutches in these bikes since I have friends with 70k miles on the same clutch. I have to believe that the Venture is just a fat girl thats not designed to be a ballerina. It wont stop me from dancing with her but the date will be a little cheaper since I can change the clutch myself.
  13. I wish you had put them on a few years ago when i was doing mine. Would have been nice to have the guide. Anyway, I took a different approach to the end weights. I took the old bars and cut off about 3/4" from the end and then took that piece with the threaded bushing inside and cross cut with the hack saw until it just about hit the bushing. Took a chisel and broke that small piece of handlebar from around the bushing and then pressed the bushing into the flanders with a socket and a few taps from the hammer. I figured i could still use the stock bars since it was only missing a small bit of the ends but i never went back to those.

  15. The perfect bike is the one you have just bought. Give it a few months and you find the flaws and start looking for something better. I know this first hand since my wife wanted her own ride so she went out and bought a sym hd200 scooter because it was simple and automatic. I told her to just get a 650 since she would get one soon enough but she opted for the scooter. She took the msf class and got her licence and the next tue we were at the dealer buying a 2010 v star 650. She picks it up on tuesday. The scooter lasted 2 months but I had the pleasure of one more " I told you so" I guess going bigger is just the natural progression of the riding process. Of course, this doesnt hold with the Venture because there isnt anything out there better!
  16. Ok, that got my interest so i went out to look at mine. the groove in the tank neck is just a slighty indented to recieve the index ridge on the cap. I can see i could have pushed the cap in backward and created a new channel for that ridge. That being said I can"t see how the "release ears" of the cap would not work even if the cap is on backward. The key should turn 90deg if the ears are retracting and the cap pulls straight out. I would suggest you push the cap down hard and try the key. If it does turn 90deg then the friction of the index ridge that forced a new grove on the back of the filler neck is holding it in.. Give it a big pull!
  17. That looks good Shep. Im curious if you really gain much strength from welding the bracket to the back of the exsisting floorboard bracket rather than just "sandwich" it between. i do have a little flex in the new pegs but its wasnt much more than the exsisting floorboards flex anyway. My wife always uses the floorboards to get on the bike anyway then she will use her pegs when she gets tired of that position with a simple kick up if the floorboards. There is also a limit on how far down you can extend the longhorn brackets. I have mine 4" from the top of the exsiting floorboard to the top of the new peg. Her peg scrapes a split second before mine does in a tight turn. I should probably move it up to 3 1/2".
  18. When our old zumo broke we called a place that had them that cheap (might have even been that one). The guy told my wife that it had the old data base in it and if we wanted a the new one it would be 200 more.. I did manage to find some profanity before i hung up on him!.
  19. I spent several hrs trying to solve this problem. Not really sure I did but I did figure out it was a ground problem and took apart the faring screwed around with those big white connectors for a while. Horn feedback went away for a while and then magically returned. It is annoying. I think the idea of ty wrapping the connectors might be the answer. Ill try that!
  20. I believe it is mainly in the handlebars. The rstd was quite a bit wider and i always seemed to get sore in the shoulders after a short time. I did change for the flanders pullback bars and it made a big difference but it still wasnt as comfortable as my venture. The bike always seemed bigger than the venture, i know they are the same size but it was the width of the bars that gave me that illusion i suspect. The Venture seems just easier to handle in tight places. The seat is a big difference on the venture too. I did put a corbin on the rstd with backrest but I still couldnt sit through a tank of gas very well. On the venture my wife and i do it all the time. Also since we do a lot of long distance travels its nice to have the trunk. Oh and did i mention the faring, Cb, music, ect ect ect? Been in some pretty cold places and the full faring was sweet! We put about 22k on the rstd and now have done 30k on my first 07 venture and 8k on my second. The rstd is a good looker but ill keep with the ventures from here on out. Just my opinion.
  21. Had one Rstd and two Ventures now. My thought on the subject is I should have just got the Venture in the first place.. Its a much more comfy bike all the way around.
  22. Eddie: I learned that when its going to happen to you it just is! There isn't a lot you can do no matter how cautious or how much trainning. Don't write off the Venture because "if your wife was on it". Every make of bike out there has gone down I'm sure and many wives have become projectiles (Bev did but she wasn't a very good one). You have to decide for yourself that the reward far outweighs the risk. Glad you are semi ok. Just be prepared to "feel" it for the next couple of months
