How about posting a picture of those mirrors on your bike so we can see how they look? Joe
-
I'd absolutely take you up on that, except mama has other plans for me. Honey-do list getting really long. Why don't you ride up this way and I'll buy YOUR dinner at a fine local eatery! Joe

Take a close look at the wording in the body of the ad. The 290,000 is a typo....it's actually 29K, which is 29,000. He had this listed a few weeks back. Sounds like the winning bidder stiffed him. Joe

Front wheel bearings are gone
FreezyRider replied to Brake Pad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
No Wayne, HE was not jumped on. My understanding of his post (and in re-reading it I now realize that the original poster was not the one who said this about gaskets...my apologies) was that the DEALER was the one who said "gaskets"..... My response was to have the dealer show him where the gaskets are, in order to protect him from getting shafted. I wish people could "hear" the tone of posts before they make judgments on the intent. Front wheel bearings are gone
FreezyRider replied to Brake Pad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Why should it matter if it's gaskets or seals? If he did nothing to cause the bearings to fail, then why should he have to pay for parts that the dealer has to change in order to correct the issue caused by faulty parts? I don't understand that thinking at all. Joe -

Ask that dealer to show you the gaskets on the parts breakdown....before the work is done. I think I'd find another dealer. Joe -

Why do the ventures whine?
FreezyRider replied to Red Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have a Barnett clutch. I also have a SCREAM, not a chirp or whine. Get within a city block of this beast and you'll be sure to hear it. Amsoil = Loud Scream Rotella Dino = Loud scream Rotella Synthetic = Loud Scream Castrol 20w-50 = Loud Scream Baron's 4-2-4 pipes will NOT cover it or even muffle it one bit. Combination of Baron's pipes and music at full volume will NOT cover or mute this scream. Whine? I'd love to just have a whine to deal with. My next step is the I-Basket. I have priced one, $283 delivered to my door. It's a lot of money to spend on an "if"....but if I can't fix it, I don't think I can keep it long term, even though I LOVE everything else about this bike. Joe -
Well, you're probably right and there is something wrong with my bike. It probably shouldn't be one of the quickest touring bikes my butt has ever sat on. It will run right with my buddy's Kaw Vulcan 2000 which has a much higher HP rating. It averaged 42.5 mpg on a 2000 mile trip a week ago (one tank hit 45mpg). Mountains, twisties, interstates, all kinds of terrain. It starts great, idles great, sounds great. Whatever is wrong to make it do all that "bad stuff".....I ain't interested in fixing. Just wanted to stop the popping. If that's so wrong, then so be it. Joe

Glad you got that off your chest, Goose! Now don't ya feel better??:rotf: I guess some us just like to tinker....and are set in our ways and beliefs. I will say this....this morning my bike popped and sputtered pretty badly on decel. Carbs sync'd just a few weeks ago. As of 4 pm, after removing/disabling the AIS, there is no longer any popping or sputtering at all. I wish I had recorded it so that you could hear it for yourself. I won't try to fool myself into believing that you would change your mind. I'd just like to have you hear the difference....... Joe

OK, here's what I did....possibly only temporarily, I may go ahead and remove that front junk too. I took off the lower front box, the one by the oil filter. I then plugged the hose that was attached to it. Also plugged the small vac hose that used to connect to the rear cyl on the right (after pulling it through to the front of the bike. I took it out for a ride and things seemed fine. Ran great, no popping on decel (which I had previously). My question is....Is there anything that could go wrong from doing what I did? I can't see that the front system could do anything at all now that the rear valve is gone and the remaining hoses are disconnected. Joe
-
Crap....I was afraid of that. I got the rear valve off and was hoping that I wouldn't have to remove the radiator. Would rather go riding..... Joe
-
I have a question for those who have totally removed the AIS system on their RSV....after removing the valve by the rear shock, did you also remove the box or valve that is at the front of the engine by the oil filter? If so, I'm assuming that is a remove the radiator job too? Thanks, Joe

At partshark.com (used to be Flatout Motorcycles) it is $482.90, still a lot but better than $600. Good people, very trustworthy. Or you can price that Works shock. I think they are less than the Yammie one. Joe

rear tire change procedure
FreezyRider replied to Hummingbird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Me too....axle was a bear to get out. Even had grease on it, and I know it had been out before since it is a 99 and has had multiple rear tire changes. I put Honda Moly 60 on it this time, we'll see if that helps. Joe -

FreezyRider replied to Hummingbird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
He probably read the Yammy Service Manual.....they have you basically disassembling everything past the swingarm to get the rear wheel off. Just ridiculous, and not necessary. Follow the instructions here and it's a piece of cake. Joe -
rear tire change procedure
FreezyRider replied to Hummingbird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I own both a Wing (94 GL1500) and a 99RSV. Don't ever let anyone tell you that it's easier to get the rear wheel off of a Wing....unless maybe they are talking about an 1800. Haven't done one of those. But I can remove the rear wheel on my RSV in half the time it takes for the Wing. Joe -
I missed it.....what is the new bike??? Need details! Joe

Voltage/amperage output on RSV
FreezyRider replied to Hummingbird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You only need a load equalizer if you replace your turn signal bulbs with LED's. The LED's won't put enough of a load on the flasher unit to make it flash properly. They will flash super-fast, almost like a flicker. Joe -
To anyone who is on the fence about joining this group..... You WILL pay one way or the other. At some point you will experience something similar to what I just went through.....probably not the exact same thing, but similar. One day a problem with your bike will pop up that you don't know how to resolve. What do you do? If you are not a supporting member, you probably tinker around with it, scratch your head a bit, then end up taking the bike to a dealer and pay them $70 an hour while their 19 year old mechanic (who has probably never seen a Venture or RSTD before except in pictures, and can't even spell "schematic") uses the trial-and-error" method to troubleshoot your problems. Break out the BIG checkbook (or plastic) for this service call. If you're lucky, they may actually find and repair your problem with as little as a $500 repair bill. OR....method #2: Pay your $12 annual membership. Post your issue. Be prepared to answer questions and try things that are suggested. Due to the immense knowledge of this site's members, and their willingness -- even eagerness -- to help your problems will likely be resolved in a matter of hours at little to no cost. I've seen this happen time and time again on this site. Your choice.....pay a teeny-weeny membership now.....or fork over the BIG BUCKS later. Joe

You said that you had to jump it to start it when you picked it up. Will it start now if you jump it? If so, I would seriously suspect that you were one of the "lucky" ones who got a defective battery from the store. It happens more than you think..... Either that, or the battery needs to be FULLY charged before you use it. Put it on a charger, not a maintainer, for 12 hours and then see what happens.

She died suddenly and mysteriously...
FreezyRider replied to FreezyRider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Goose, To be honest, I think maybe my hearing was playing tricks on me. I thought that I heard it click 3 or4 times once when I was turning the key on/off. However, when I actually got the connection repaired and turned it on the fuel pump ran for 6-7 seconds before it got primed up. I really don't think at this point that what I heard was actually the fuel pump. Hearing is one of the first things to go..... Again, thanks! I owe you. Joe
