I'm hoping the helmet makers start making a wider range of shapes. I know we aren't the only ones with this sort of problem. I will keep looking for a modular with this shape... Fingers crossed! Frank

I have been in helmet shopping hell for the last few weeks. My RF1000 has had it after 7 years and with the RSV being more comfy I have noticed a lot more pain trying to do a little longer rides. I was really hoping to get into a modular helmet. First I ordered the Scorpion Exo 900 modular. Great helmet...feels solid, nice fit and finish with great features. But the 3xl was too small front to back and my chin touched the chin bar. Second was a Icon Aliance in 3xl. Not a modular but great price at 160.00. Still a great looking helmet and would have been great but too snug and more for a round shaped head. We found an Arai Profile in xl and RX-Q in 2xl. The Profile was too small but crazy comfy and probably would be great in a 2xl. The RX-Q in 2xl did actually fit pretty well. The problem with these two was price (Profile 480.00) (RX-Q 525.00). I don't mind the dough but I am still hoping to find a modular someday. So after seeing a review on the new RF1100 I liked the 5 different shell sizes, venting, improved sealing and removable liner. Found it locally in 3xl(hair too big) and xl (hair too tight). Looks like the Qwest is a cruiser version of the RF1100, venting changed for upright position and non removable liner. The Qwest comes in cheaper at 315.00. I decided to order the RF1100 in Metallic Black, 415.00 from Revzilla. Good service and awesome helmet. It's early yet, only have a quick 50 mile ride on it but no hotspot at all. Nice padding and washable liner. Even has nice pockets molded in for headset speakers. It seems to be quiet and possibly good airflow (hard to tell behind the windshield). When I poke my head out of the air bubble I can feel air moving. Fit and finish are excellent, the visor is like butter and you can feel it suck shut when closed. So if you have a larger hard to shape head, give this a go. I see lots of comfy miles in my future. Hate to do a me too post, but I would be interested in one of these as well if someone starts it up again. If I had access to the equipment it would be doable with these instructions but the ex-wife kept the welder. :-( Thanks Frank

Ok so I finally got a wild hair and decided to tackle this project. What I was looking to accomplish was being able to answer the phone thru the stock headset without plugging in my phone using Bluetooth. Here's what I came up with, I already had one of these laying around. http://goo.gl/WB4Hs it's a 2.0 bluetooth headset dongle. It's even backlit. This isn't the seller I used so don't take my word for it. It works perfect for streaming music from my ANDROID phone to the stock setup. You can play, pause,ff,rw etc. It works well when using a set of headphones but the mic is actually contained in the device. (will not FF/RW with an iphone or apple product) The plan was to buy a BuddyRich cable and mod the dongle to accept the mic cable from BuddyRich's setup. Well I tore it apart and found the mic easy enough so I decided to hit up Radio Shack and buy a jack to use. When I got to RS I noticed they had the 5 pin din cables. So I thought why not give it a go. I cut a male/female 1/8 mic cable and desoldered the mic on the dongle. I soldered the female end of the cord in place of the mic on the dongle and soldered the male half to the mic and mic ground lead in the 5 din cable. Plugged it all in for a test and BOOM!!! It all works. I can listen to music or Pandora off of the phone and if a call comes in I can answer and when done hit play again to go back to my tunes. I had it cranked up to 70+ today and although there was a little background noise due to wind it worked great. Couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. Also if I decide not to use bluetooth a simple splitter cable can be plugged in to do the same thing manually. This was just a quick job to make sure it all worked. Will refine the cables when I feel like splitting the fairing to install that part. I also plan on buying PTT buttons to wire in to the front and rear headsets. While I had the cords gutted I cut a mic cable and shorting it on and off by hand didn't seem to cause and popping or problems. Will probably wire it so you can unplug the PTT button for full time mic at will. *** side note Messing with the fine wires in the cable I bought was a pain in the REAR. If I were to do it all again I would buy the BuddyRich cable. I suggest you do too Frank

I have about 100gig of drm free. I just visit friends with a hard drive and we swap. But pirate bay gets my vote. Just scan everything a use common sense. If you get a bug you were probably using the wrong anti-virus :-) Frank

We rode up to Omaha, over to CB, 275 out to Glenwood, thru Plattsmouth and back down to Lincoln. About 175 miles...one of the best days we might get in Nebraska. Not a lot of wind gets to me on this bike. I see lots of tshirt days in my future. Made me miss the Vmax a little... Right up to the moment I set the cruise :-) Anyway not much of a fan of the mesh stuff but Joe Rocket makes a great product in my book. But don't put too much stock in what I say because I was in a tshirt and shorts today. Was it the safest gear? No! But damn if I wasn't comfy. Frank

There's always the Honda rebel. I think you will find them pretty well suited for what you have going on. Frank

I vote for the 250 Ninja, can find one cheap and they can't be killed. Also a far better running bike that she won't outgrow as fast. The 500 Ninja is still very small and easy to handle. The Buell will ruin your dental work and blur your vision. Not to mention Vespa's can run you down. Frank

I already had the Barons lowering kit. I just was aiming for around 1 inch instead of the 1.5 inch that the kit does. This set of links does just that. The brake relocation stuff was still on there It has to be unless you want to seriously mod your rear fender. Best of luck Frank

Got the new links put in today....Amazing how much faster that goes when you get used to it. It took 12 mins including putting away the tools. I think it's damn near perfect now. So for the next project....haha Huge thanks to Ponch!!! Frank

Installing Barons Lowering Kit
Hulign replied to gaillarry's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Just compared my stock links to the lowering links. There is 3/8 of a difference. I have a set on the way that is 2/8 so that I can have about 1 inch drop. I actually did the measurements 3 times cause it just seemed like there should be more of a difference! I dropped my front as well...wasn't bad but did turn the tubes out a bit so the air valves would clear the bars. Sad that I got it most of the way reassembled before we noticed...haha Frank- 5 replies

machining a VMX rear gear housing
Hulign replied to pegscraper's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Would you be interested in doing another one? I am really not a fan of the overdrive 5th with the stock rear gear. Thanks Frank -
So as long as we are spending money...haha. What do I need for calipers? Just the non radial mount R1 calipers? Will try and search for them and the info. Frank
-
Coming from a Vmax that had the R1 calipers and master as well as lighter wheels and radials. I think the brakes are great on my 08 RSV. The back brake is damn strong but my Vmax was was running a 4 piston R1 caliper/rotor as well so I am used to a sensitive rear brake. I would still consider doing the 4 piston fronts cause its about the mods to me. Frank

Installing Barons Lowering Kit
Hulign replied to gaillarry's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Almost forgot... I would run a bit more pressure in the rear shock. Also pull off the passenger seat and put a few washers under the bolt that sits centered in the rear fender. When we rode 2up on a couple odd bumps that bolt rubbed the tire. Rick Butler mentioned that in the fine print they might have mentioned this was meant for 1up riding? I have mine lowered front and back and like it a lot. But I do scrape the mufflers from time to time. Frank- 5 replies

Installing Barons Lowering Kit

I just did this myself. Yes you will have to pull the axle. Its not real hard to do the caliper part. I would just tale the line loose and wait till the caliper is all bolted down to figure out how the brake line needs to lay. As for the links I waited till all the back was done and then did those. I did have the play with the height a bit to get the bolts lined up. I didn't have to loosen anything else. I did cheat and use an air impact to save my knuckles a bit. Good luck! Frank- 5 replies

Ok gang, I have my RSV lowered front and rear.I am VERY happy with the way the bike handles, only real problem is the muffler scraping. I thought maybe I would make a set of links that are 3/4 or 1/2 the difference between the Barons and the stock links. I don't have a drill press handy and thought I might just see if someone was making these? Thanks for any and all help! Frank
-
Got mine today! I had actually kind of forgotten about them. Not sure what I will do with them but they look cool on my desk! Thanks again Frank

Got my seats and bag bolts via ups today. I wanted to publicly thank Rick for the great work and speedy turn around time. I sent the seats last Tuesday and got them back today. They were in town on Friday according to the tracking #. The seats look great! You would be hard pressed to notice a change without sitting on them. No real ride time on them yet but for the short trip today they felt great! Thanks Rick! Frank

Yep! Rick Butler is the guy to talk to. I will be looking for my seat package from him tomorrow...can't wait! Super nice guy to deal with! Frank

1st gen COP's coil install/help
Hulign replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Oh man If I had a toy like that at work I would probably glow in the dark! Way too much fun for me to be trusted with. A few of the Vmax guys were doing this, I thought about it for a while but since it dynoed at 134hp I thought I should leave well enough alone. Sure wish my Venture had that power. Lucky that I can go borrow my old Vmax anytime I want You bike looks like a crazy ongoing project...the best kind in my opinion Good luck Frank -
OK this is my Final question....
