There are class action suits against Wal-Mart currently, perhaps dozens, but with revenue of $419 BILLION in 2011, there would have to thousands of multi million dollar verdicts to put them out of business. Meanwhile, the margins are growing and the dollars keep flowing. Balderdash!

I agree with your assertion of US Corporations hiding their true product origins. But, a careful study of the product specifications can reveal inconsistencies that are harbingers of potential problems. Even if the materials of USA made products are imported, there is a high likelihood that the US manufacturer is going to check that material for bad stuff before utilizing it in his end product. I think many US corporations are greedy and sending their production to China, India or Viet Nam simply to save many dollars and then sell the familiar American name branded product to unwary consumers is criminal. To add the greed of Wal-Mart into the mix with that corporations demands on it's suppliers makes for a potential toxic mix. Do you really think the largest company in the world gives a rat's a$$ about product liability?

I don't recall any safety problems with most Japanese motorcycles. Japan has a very stringent safety protocol and a completely different culture than the Chinese. If I'm not mistaken, there have been many recalls of Wal-Mart marketed Chinese made products over the years. Wal-Mart is not called the "Evil Empire" for nothing. And I'm not defending CamelBak, either for their outsourcing. That's why I said to look for "MADE IN USA".

You are taking your chances with anything from ChinaWal-Mart. BPA, lead, etc. That water you are drinking will be sitting in gawd knows what for hours, getting hot. I would look for Made in USA BPA free.

I ride with a full face too, Brian and have been using a tube with a "bite valve". I attach the tube to my microphone boom and move it around to suit my drinking. I also use a collapsible water bottle tucked between the windshield and dash on the First Gen; doesn't hold a lot, maybe half a litre, but it gets me to next gas stop, unless it is really hot. I got that bottle at the Ontario welcome center in Sault Ste. Marie. Because it is flexible (basically a sac) I can fill it and still slide it down into that space between the dash and 'shield. The bite valve came from a different water bottle I found at a sporting goods store. I think it might have been a replacement part for those water bags on your back. What do they call them? ...Camelbak? Go here for some good points about choosing a hydration system: http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/hydration+system.html

Steve, I can't help you with the Cody pics, but Deb took one of you and me at Davis Rally. You weren't on the bike, but considering the subject matter this is a pretty good pic.

Seems to me, with that much intake, there is going to be a need for frequent stops to eliminate...if you catch my drift. Do you LD guys have catheters as well? Perhaps 'Stiches don't show wetness from within?

Stopped for speeding A rookie police officer pulled a biker over for speeding and had the following exchange: Officer: May I see your driver's license? Biker: I don't have one. I had it suspended when I got my 5th DUI. Officer: May I see the owner's card for this vehicle? Biker: It's not my bike. I stole it. Officer: The motorcycle is stolen? Biker: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I saw the owner's card in the tool bag when I was putting my gun in there. Officer: There's a gun in the tool bag? Biker: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and killed the dude who owns this bike and stuffed his dope in the saddle bags. Officer: There's drugs in the saddle bags too? Biker: Yes, sir. Hearing this, the rookie immediately called his captain. The biker was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain approached the biker to handle the tense situation: Captain: Sir, can I see your license? Biker: Sure. Here it is. It was valid. Captain: Who's motorcycle is this? Biker: It's mine, officer. Here's the registration. Captain: Could you slowly open your tool bag so I can see if there's a gun in it? Biker: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it. Sure enough, there was nothing in the tool bag. Captain: Would you mind opening your saddle bags? I was told you said there's drugs in them. Biker: No problem. The saddle bags were opened; no drugs. Captain: I don't understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him you didn't have a license, stole this motorcycle, had a gun in the tool bag, and that there were drugs in the saddle bags. Biker: Yeah, I'll bet he told you I was speeding, too.

Ha! That's funny. I've not heard Fort Riley called that before and I spent 30 months there; May73 through October75.

First legal street ride was a CL350 Honda in 1972. I was 20. I rode a friend's Allstate when I was 14. Built a Briggs and Stratton powered mini-bike when I was 15. Killed it when I was 16. First new bike was a CB750 when I was 22 and in the Army.

I don't know if this is Southern or not since there are muskrats up North as well. Baked Muskrat Use only hams and shoulders. When skinning animals, take care not to cut into the musk glands on lower belly. Also remove white stringy tissue from inside each leg. Parboil with 1 sliced onion 30 minutes. Drain, flour the pieces, and put in baking dish. Season with salt and pepper, and cover with 8 slices of bacon. Put ¼ cup vinegar and ¼ cup water in pan, and roast until tender. Baste frequently with liquor forming in pan. One muskrat serves 3 or 4.

I seriously doubt that you could get both bikes on a 4 x 8 trailer. At three foot wide and more than eight feet long, the Venture would take up most of a 4 x 8 trailer by itself. Where you gonna put the Honda?

Driveline issues aside; I think you will need a ramp substantially longer then three or four feet if the front wheel is going to be as high as the one pictured. As several have mentioned, these motos are very heavy and quite difficult to push up a ramp AND keep it from tipping. A short ramp of 3-4 feet would be fairly steep even if the wheel needed to be raised just one foot. I've not done it but perhaps figure out a way to tow it rear wheel first, ie. back it up the ramp. Lock the handlebars straight ahead. Good Luck!

To remove chrome chemically is to remove the plating with the reverse process of when it was plated, ie. electrically/electrolysis. Chemical dipping as in dipping for paint removal will not remove the chrome. That's why Freebird says to take it to a chrome plater to "de-plate". -

Is the oil lock required to work properly (damaged) if the anti dive is rendered inoperable? It was my understanding that a functioning oil lock was only required if the EAND was desired. If EAND is disconnected then a functioning oil lock is moot? -
And like Gary and Brian, I had a hell of a time getting that pinstriping off. I settled on a hair dryer (hot, hot, hot) to get the tape started coming and then started slowly pulling, heating more as needed. And after I got it off it left a groove where it had been AND adhesive that was not removable with any solvent I tried. I ended up using a pink Pearl eraser to rub off the residual adhesive. The groove remained.

On my 1983 Standard the pinstriping on the fairing was under a very thick coat of clear coat...on the right side; on the left side not so much. The pinstriping on the fender was not under clear coat. The pinstriping on the saddlebags was.

Rebuilding and Modding my 83
Prairiehammer replied to icebrrg3rd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've never seen it before, but your handlebars are on backwards! Did you do that? Here is a pic of a normal handlebar setup: -
I replaced my '83 stock horns with horns from AutoZone. I used a high tone universal (FIAMM # BH101HC, AutoZone # 006073) and a low tone "Freeway Blaster" (FIAMM # BH103FBL, AutoZone # 345230) 132db! I initially hooked them up using the stock wiring and connectors, as well as the stock brackets. The high tone universal would sound off, but the Freeway Blaster would just "thunk". After determining that the Blaster was in fact good (by connecting straight to battery with jumpers), I determined that the setup was too much for the stock wiring and switch. Not wishing to burn up the switch (very expensive and difficult to replace), I wired in a horn relay and new 14ga wire to power the horns. As for the "trigger", I simply plugged in the stock horn connectors to the relay. A new 14ga wire from the battery to the relay provides the juice to fire the horns. The provided short wire was used to ground the horns. I was even able to retain the chrome covers from the stock horns and use them to cover the back side of the new horns. Now, the bike sounds just like my Chevy Silverado truck! I'm even considering utilizing the setup on my Acura Legend. (How can such a fine car have such wimpy "beep-beep" horns?!)
