An old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch. The old German Shepherd thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in deep trouble now!" Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder, if there are any more around here?" Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. "Whew!," says the panther, "That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!" Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the panther. So, off he goes. The squirrel soon catches up with the panther, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the panther. The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!" Now, the old German Shepherd sees the panther coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?," but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says... "Where's that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another panther!" Moral of this story... Don't mess with the old dogs... Age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery! Blarney and brilliance only come with age and experience.

Just curious, How many Wing Riders do we have on the site?
coy55boy replied to Midrsv's topic in Honda Goldwing Tech Talk
Yeow! With all those miles under your belt, how did you find time for bolt on accessorizing? -
+ another one on the Kuryakyn rests. They work just fine but they are a real PITA when getting into the trunk (which I do on a regular basis). If those Rivco pieces weren't made of solid chromium, I'd get a set to replace these.

A congressman was seated next to a young girl on a recent flight. Hoping to endear himself to a future voter, he said to her, "Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger." The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, "What would you like to talk about?" "Oh, I don't know," said the congressman. "How about global warming or universal health care or stimulus packages?" as he smiled smugly. "OK," she said. "Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. . . . A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. . . Yet, a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?" The legislator, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it for a moment and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea." To which the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss global warming, universal health care, or the economy, when you don't know crap?" She went back to reading her book, and the congressman had nothing else to say the rest of the flight. (Gonna have to remember this one...!)

I bought a bulk consignment of dyna beads. I have almost 5 lbs. of 'em. I figured I'd have enough to last me a lifetime. I really like them and use them on my Venture and my p/u truck. They do the job they were designed for. I'd like to install them on my Wing, but I've got 2 concerns. One is the tire pressure monitor system. I read somewhere that if you install the beads through the valve, the beads will become lodged in the valve. This would require that the valve be removed to get the beads out. The obvious solution is to take the tire off the rim (at least partially) and drop the beads inside the tire without going through the valve. Giant PITA! The other problem is the 90° valve stem. It's hard enough to get the beads to flow through a straight valve stem. I can't imagine how tough it'll be to convince them to 'Take the first left and then straight through the TPMS to your destination'. Now I'm thinking of getting the Centramatics as a solution. Unless someone can give me a hint as to how I can use the beads...

Sobering reminder

I drove through there about a month and a half ago. I didn't have change and I definitely didn't have the 'pass' device. When I went through the first toll booth, there was no one on duty. But, there was a sign that said "No change, no problem. We'll send you a bill". I assumed they take a pic of your license plate and process the bill. Still haven't gotten a bill yet. Maybe because I had out of state plates...

Heck, it's not too surprising to me. They share a lot of styling concepts... -
My Wing came with a Rivco hitch which also requires a hole in the rear fender but also came with a lighted reflector when the hitch is not in use. You can also get a lighted reflector that doubles as an additional brake light. I leave the hitch installed and added a quick detach rack for carrying a cooler or an extra bag. Used it on my cross country recently and it worked out great! The beauty of this system is that I can use the hitch to pull a trailer without removing the rack adapter. I can also put an adapter on my trailer tongue so the rack can be used when towing also. Another benefit is that I have a flag pole holder that also fits the adapter when I go on PGR missions. Versatility is the name of the game!

I first straddled my Wing on Feb. 27th of this year. I put the Venture in storage until I decided what to do with it. This last weekend, I took it out of storage in order to clean it up for sale. I drove it to work and was astonished at how small it felt. When I first got it, I thought it was a monster (my previous bike was a Virago 750). I still like the way it rides and the handlebars fit me much better than the Wing (of course they do...they are adjustable after all). I've seen several posts from other GW riders that say the handlebar risers will make a big difference, so I'm going to give that a try. But, overall I'd have to say the Wing is just a much more powerful, much more comfortable, much more friendly bike to ride. Like the fact that I don't have to move my hand to reach the horn button. Or that I can pop the trunk open with a remote instead of having to fumble with a key. Or that the audio information is displayed in the center console and can be read in daytime as well as night. Or that I can use reverse gear when in gravel. Yes, the Wing does have it's own challenges. Like changing the air filter (what a PITA that is!). But, I LIKE it! So, if you know anyone looking for a really nice condition '83 Royale with only 5500 original miles, lemme know. Gonna take some pics this weekend and get them posted.

From 'Flag Rules and Regulations' web site: 4. When flags of States, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the right of the flag of the United States (the viewer's left). When the flag is half-masted, both flags are half-masted, with the US flag at the mid-point and the other flag below. I found another site with graphic representations. Makes it a little easier to understand. The American flag should always be to its' own right which is say when facing your house from the street, the American flag will be farthest to the left.

I ride with the Patriot Guard and bought a flag pole attachment for my Rivco tow hitch. I didn't like the flag pole that was made for it (seemed a little flimsy) so I went out and bought a much sturdier steel one piece pole. The pole is too small for the receptacle. So, I found a piece of PVC that fits the pole perfectly, but it's 2/10ths of an inch too thick to fit in the receptacle. I tried using a piece of sand paper to 'slim' it down, but I can see that's gonna take a LOOOOONG time. So, I'm hoping some of you will have some ideas on how to reduce the girth of this adapter.

+1 You can speak for me. Ditto on your comments. -
My wife used to enjoy riding on my Virago 750 when we were dating. That was 25 years ago. But now, she won't even sit on the bike. I'm hoping that eventually she will see how much fun I'm having and want to join in. In the meantime, I'm just trying to be patient.

Yup, them's the ones...

I have a really hard time finding sympathy in myself for people like this. They give everyone on a bike a bad name. If he gets outs there and kills himself, I won't shed a tear. I just hope he doesn't take anyone with him...

I mounted one of these on my 83 Venture. Works OK. Not as good as the cruise on my Wing though...

Welcome to the VentureRider Wing coalition! I hope you enjoy yours as much I as I do mine... I'm only getting about 36mpg on the highway and even less in town. Maybe I twist the throttle too much? Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the maintenance done on this bike before I got it other than what the PO told me. He said all maintenance was performed on schedule (whatever that means) but offered nothing in the way of proof. Maybe I need to change the spark plugs or adjust the valves or something...
-
Wow! That DOES look like fun!!!

Wow! You're a lucky guy with quick reflexes! I'm not sure I could have reacted fast enough even if I saw it coming...

Very Nice!

I think the concern is regarding drag. If the fringe is long enough or has enough surface area to get caught in the air curtain blowing by your bike, it can pull the lever back far enough to intermittently engage the electrical switches for braking. A fraction of a second later, your cruise control will disengage. I have really long fringe on my Venture (16" past the end of the lever), but it's an '83 and therefore the cruise control is a manual throttle lock and is not adversely affected.
