  1. After reading all this, I am not surprised at the depth of understanding of survival techniques mentioned, but so few seem to be talking about modulated headlites. I have one, and am amazed at how they make you stand out. Ive also noted that the neon green/yellow safety vest wraps, stand out so well, there is just no missing them. I personally have been switching sides of lanes for many years, similar to what Jeff is suggesting. In Mich, supposedly we have legal modulated headlites even though, I cant find authority for it in the actual law for motorcycles. I am generally a recreation only rider, so the heavy traffic is avoided for the most part. How many states actually allow modulated headlites anyways?
  2. On a more serious note, I wonder if the solar storm we have been having has done something . But Ive also found, the first thing that cures most puter hassles, is rebooting, then if needed, clear the cache completely even though clearing cookies requires a new sign in on all my favorite forums.
  3. Hi, Ive been here ten years , and I thought I had poor service. I used to get outages every year or so, that would last maybe one day or so. They did upgrade our service, the power company, and now most outages, are maybe once a year, and a few hours. Ive only had to have, an eight hundred watt inverter hooked to my truck, and that was enough to do the basics. It wont run an air condish, or fridge, but will run a puter, a tv, and a fan or two and I have a small nat gas plaque heater that can back up the furnace fairly well for a couple of days that doesnt need electricty at all. I think if I tried, my inverter may actually be capable of running the furnace and its fan, but there has been no real need for it. As far as air, I can get along without it, as long as there is a fan and cool shower water still working. I do have a large ice chest that I can put fridge stuff in if really needed, but there has never been a need for it yet. The worst outage I can remember is a four day outage that we had in what I call,,,,, the great ice storm of 76,,,,, that definitely would have been something that would have taxed my miserly system, but I think the furnace could have been run off it, which at the time, would have been the most important. It happend in late Feb, and any fridge item could have been kept on the unheated porch. I guess it all depends on how you are set up for spending the big bux, but I wasnt, and I wouldnt do so even now when I could easily afford it. Personally, I am at the stage where I am trying to downsize the number of moving parts around my place since getting my venture and other bikes keeps me plenty busy with working on stuff.

    I had a knee replacement in 97, I was only 47 at the time, and I am sure that I wouldnt recommend it for anyone that young unless it was absolutely necessary. My doc should have just insisted that I just be off my feet for work, that was actually the major problem. I was down in bed for two full months after the knee replacement, used a walker for the most part of three months for convenience and safety since it was winter at the time and didnt want to risk a fall on the ice. I dont really want to go into what all was involved, but you can pm me if you want to, not sure I want to advertise to everyone everything that happened. Overall, I recommend against it if you can possibly avoid it. I had what sounded to be some of the worst results of it, other than those who ended up with bleeding or infections, or who had to have replacements right away. I was in serious pain for two years post surgery, and the surgical knee hurts every day, to this day fifteen years later. The only time that my non surgical knee hurts worse than the surgical knee,is is I am heavily using it for seriously walking or working on it. Pm me if you need to hear the rest of the story.

Dont concern too much about the drywall, a skilled mudder can fix that up for very little time or money, but dont bother trying it yourself when the time comes unless you have done lots of it before, just find the best mudder you can, for the finish work, and buy em a case of whatever he likes and a good steak.
  6. Regarding the use of computer technology for troubleshooting, I called my Tuffy Muffler people, they do engine tuning as well as the usual exhaust brakes bla bla. When I asked them, regarding diagnosing my problem with my 92 gmc 4.3 tbi, they flatly said, the puter stuff cant be trusted, bring it in, and for fifty bux, we will go thru the old fashioned steps to diagnose the problem as well as do the puter diagnostics. And just a couple of weeks ago, I had a problem with a check engine soon light on my 2003 chevy 5.3 vee eight. I went to the best professional type auto parts store, and asked if they had a loaner puter diagnostic tool to help with the engine, the guy, almost laughed at me, he said,, and I quote,, No, we dont mess with that, they usually wont work,,right,,you can go to auto zone or something, and borrow one of those,, and then when youre done trusting that to tell you what to change, youll be back and be buying parts from us that the auto zone diagnostics machine failed to find. Unquote. Not trying to be a dixk about it, but the freebie type puter diagnostic stuff is a little shaky by the look and sound of it. I did in fact go to auto zone, and they diagnosed a major fuel leak. I checked my gas cap, and have to check my vapor canister and lines, and look for a vac leak is what the machine suggested or thats what they told me. Indeed the vac lines are all eight yrs old, so its past time to just change them all out. Be sure to let us know what you find Frank.
  7. Hi Frank, Ok, youve done lots , have you checked the intake versus the exhaust temp, on the cat con? My local mech said that twenty degrees difference is about right, I checked mine on my old truck last summer, and it was eighty degrees difference on mine so the cat con was the first thing off. I used my handy dandy HF laser temp gauge to do that, so who knows. It didnt make any difference, so I guess there is is a wider temp difference than my local so called master mechanic said. So this may or may not be something you want to check, although, it seems counterintuitive at this time, since increased back pressure would tend to make the thing run richer than other wise>>>???? or maybe not. Also, have you tried taking the pipe off the muffler, to see if running that exhaust open, makes any difference. I heard of another mechanical guy, that went so far as to change cam gears and cam chain, to no good effect,, only to find that the muffler had fallen apart, and a piece had blocked exhaust flow. The symptoms, were basically similar to what you are describing here, it should be simple enough to check, so not much time would be wasted if you tried that. I know nothing about the differences between tpi and my old tbi equipment so youve tapped my knowledge base completely now, I will be watching this thread for when you finally find the answer with great interest.   8. Hi, Ive read the whole thing here, and wonder how it is that you know its going lean after one third throttle. Not trying to be stinky about it, but just wondering how youre so sure. For me to ask this, you must know, that seemingly every time I get into a mindfxxk situation like you are in, I have learned to question, every little thing that I believe about the situation and it appears to me that this question needs answering. I am no particlularly skilled gm mechanic, but this summer got two vehicles running that were sitting long periods of time, both were of similar vintage, and both presented mindfxxk situations similar to this. Does this vehicle have an intake heater of any sort? Is your heat connector pipe, that goes from the air cleaner to the exhaust manifold, intact and if there is a valve in the air cleaner, does it open correctly? Your symptom reminds me of a situation with my old granada, and it turns out , that increased air speed, and high humidity was freezing up the carb, at higher speeds in cold weather. The heat pipe, from the manifold to the air cleaner, was loose or something, maybe missing entirely, and this stuff started. It ran fine, in very dry and in warm weather, but if there was any serious humidity, and the temps were fifty or below, it gradually got worse until the engine would only idle. It turned out,,, that ,,, if I just shut the engine off, the engine heat would melt the ice in the carb, and it would be good for another twenty miles. The situation was compounded for me, by the fact that when it first started, I had limped to a gas station, and bought some dry gas and put it in, and the thing took off just fine. It wasnt the dry gas, it was the engine shutdown that did the trick, unfortunately for me, I just kept putting dry gas in every time it got bad and it seemed to correct it, hhahahahhaeheheheheee, this went on for months, but due to the fact that I only drove a few miles at a time for work, it never happened until I was out on the road for long distance. After a while, I began to connect this problem to low temps, and hi humidity, then read up on the issue, and voila, the heat connection was discovered. Oh well, just one more in a long line of hard knocks, haha.
  9. I did the army engineering fix, pulled out the inner cable, poured a bit of oil into the housing and held the housing up as high as I could get it for a half hour, and it worked fine. Its colder now than when it started, and there hasnt been a peep from it in the last few rides since I did that fix.

Ive heard Fla has some special probs in the wintertime due to snowbirds, but that delay you mentioned is quite long. In any case Ruffy, I sure hope your knee replacement goes well, I had one years ago, and it didnt work as well as hoped and expected. I havnt had to have it redone yet, but it is at the last time period before they usually need to be replaced again at about the fifteen year timeline. Good luck Ruffy
  11. Hi, I am with the guy that said that if you try to hone your politics too much in the economic sphere,,, there lies madness. After all the hoopla, the last I knew, Geico was owned by Berkshire Hathaway, which is headed by that socialist Warren Buffet, who thinks that even the rich should be paying a fair share of taxes. I am going to stick with the insurer that pays any claim properly and fairly and doesnt charge me an arm and a leg to do it. I have Allstate right now, but prolly will be leaving them after having what I thought would be ,,,a homeowners claim ,,,be put on the back burner for way too long. They couldnt answer phone calls for more than a week at one point, and only returned my calls, when I left a message saying that,,, quote,,, the good news is, I have no claim to pursue due to the guilty party making me whole. unquote. That one got an enthusiastic reply the next day. I like agreed on value too, I have it on my old Vette and sure hope that it pays off if needed, since its the first time Ive ever had that sort of insurance.
  12. Due to a major internet banking fiasco, I made all my previously internet available accounts, dead to the web. I killed off my paypal account too, and they are a bunch of mud sticky nizwits if you ask me. I had to wait seven days or something to shut off my account totally. That was two months ago, and about the only thing its stopped me from being able to do,,, is recklessly buy junk ,,,,on ebay. Good Riddance, and if anyone wants to know about the internet banking fiasco, just ask.
  13. Not to hijack the thread or anything, but my story is a dirt riding ,, or should I say a snow riding story on my old Yammi xt500,, I had ISDT tires, you know, the huge knobbies. Thirty plus years ago I might add, I was 28 or something I think. Well when the dirt season was over, I would ride in the woods with the snow, and usually, since there were three wheelers even back then and snowmobiles riding the trails there, as long as I kept the speed moving, I could stay on top of the tracks. Do I need to tell you, I was one ,,,,,desperate to ride a two wheeler puppy ,,,back then. I was going thru the trails, and came out to an open field, that I had never been on, pristine snow, but it was glazed from thaw and refreeze, so I set out across it, as long as I was keeping my speed up, all was well, but I slowed, and the whole works sunk into eighteen inches of snow. And that refrozen, crust that had held me up,, and allowed me to ride out about a hundred fifty yards into this mess, now became an obstacle, to drag that three hundred sixty pound thumper back thru. I might add, that the way back, was rather uphill to boot. All I can say,is thats the closest Ive ever come to having a heart attack, dragging that bike end after end back thru that snow, uphill, it must have taken me an hour to get it back to where I could get traction. Needless to say, I will never trust unknown snow again, haha. Have a happy new year to all ye.

I should have remembered this to begin with, but the tilt type table that tilts 45 degrees, has so much slop that its useless to use at an angle on metal at all, the drill size in metal, is no doubt limited to about three steenths, on a flat surface, at a decent rate, but tilted, that drill will almost certainly break due to the sideways pressure and the slop. It might work on wood, but shaky shaky. Also, that two inches of stroke, is going to have you moving the table up and down all the time if you use it on different size materials. My bigger one, prolly has six inches of stroke, and doesnt force me to need to move the table up and down much at all.. If you have the room at all, and can part with the bux, buy the big one. YMMV
  16. Hi I have one of those small bench top dp s from HF, personally, you can do better, I found mine to be kinda sloppy when used heavily in metal. If you restrict it to softer wood, and maybe up to five steenths drill size, and a modest feed rate, it should work for you, but thats about the comfortable limit for mine. There seemed to be alot of play in the spindle. I must say, in wood or anything soft it is ok, although I dont think I would try to drill lucite or other delicate plastic due to the slop prolly causing breakage of the plastic. I would take the dp that you select, unbox it, and push sideways on the spindle, if there is any play whatsoever, that wont be too cool to have bouncing all over on metal you are trying to drill. Also, it can be bogged down quite seriously with a serious workpiece. Personally, I would definitely bite the bullet, and buy a larger floor standing model if you are doing anything serious. Prolly can get a bigger one for double that price and it should last a lifetime. I do have a larger drill press that I like very much except that it takes up some serious floor space. If you were near me, I would sell my little one to you very cheaply, personally , I prefer my handheld half inch 110v drill anyday to that little dp.

  19. My 83 has 19500, just a young child yet. My parts bike has forty five thousand.

I paid 850 us to a motivated seller, for an 83 with under 20k miles last summer, the bike needed paint badly which is now done, it had two new tires and a new battery, although it had a questionable stator which quit charging in two weeks. I also paid a hundred bux for a relatively complete parts bike, 84, motor runs when ethered, no battery, most plastics intanct, but maybe missing second gear. There is a local guy, with a clean 86 bike for 3200, runs good, but he will never get it methinks. A lot of prices have to do with the local economies, Michigan is in a very severe recession for a long time, the only way to buy these bikes is with cash, there is no credit available for something so old here. Maybe Sask has a better local economy for a thirty year old bike going for five grand even with currency differences.
  21. I bought an xs11 that had almost the identical problem, it was the emulsifier tubes for the main jets, every hole was kind of spiderwebbed with a film, no doubt from alky in the gas nowadays. I used a toothpick end to clean them, and the bike ran fantastic after cleaning. Be sure all parts get returned to their respective carb and a soft cleaning tool like a toothpick is ideal, but I ve used those tiny tiny drills from harbor freight for five bux to clean some carb holes, to no ill effect, but others say metal tools can ruin jet holes.

Hi, I think I got most of the info from Kats Karb Kleaning { sp } over at the xs11 list, but I have used the original formula pinesol, straight, just take out the jets and soak, maybe for days,, I take them out every day and clean the works with the hottest water you can find, then blow thru every hole with spray carb cleaner, but its likely that air blowing thru will do the job too. The keyword over at the eleven list is TRIPLE cleaning, and thats pretty much what it took for me. I have done two sets of XS eleven mikunis and a zuki 11 set with pinesol, all to good effect. And for what its worth, I had never worked on carbs before except to synch. Be VERY SURE to wear some kind of eye protection when blowing thru those tiny holes. Dont put rubber or plastic in any kind of caustic carb cleaner, but pine sol wont hurt them. Also, there are some who, say the lemon pinesol, and the generic chinese pine cleaner you get in a dollar store wont work, so I used genuine pinesol original formula. It costs a bit more, but ten bux should cover it, and thats less than a quart of the yammie cleaner that works about as well. I also have used the yammie carb cleaner, diluted half and half with water with about the same results. But yammie cleaner costs five times more. Clean every hole three times, do a bench synch, and put em back on, start it up and synch, after some initial spits and stutters while the orifices are filling, the synch should do the rest of the job. Be sure to return all parts to their original installed carb, dont mix em carb for carb, they wear into their original installation. Buy four baking pans to keep the parts separate, at the dollar store or wherever. I used a five quart plastic storage bin for my flat four eleven hundred carb sets, but you can prolly find another bigger one to do the bulkier V carb s setup on the venture. I just soaked everything whole, with the small parts out of course including the diaphragms but without taking the mounting parts off the unit. Have fun.

  25. In Michigan, if youre late getting your tags, there is an extra charge, I believe ten bux. But if you never re register that plate, you can transfer a plate from another bike if you have one, and its just the eight dollar transfer fee. If you ask me, its just about getting the money.
