  1. Hi All, Good replys all, after thinking about it some more, I am going to open the air box, check for oil and check the oil level, which I am almost sure is a little overfull based on your criteria. Karl also suggested more or less bypassing the AIR system, and venting the crankcases direct to atmosphere. Ive done that with my B12, or maybe I should say, a PO did and it works fine. Thanks all, TomSmith
  2. Hi All, I bought an 83 with twenty thousand miles on it. I am experienceing a problem with the engine makeing burp noises and emitting smoke around the tank filler area. The smoke is blueish, like it prolly is crankcase blowby or would be similar to the exhaust of a car that is burning large amounts of oil. This bike does NOT emit blue smoke from the tailpipes at all. The burp sound, and this emission of smoke, typically happens at low rpm, maybe no more than 2500, under mostly very light to no throttle. The first times I heard it, there was just a burp noise and the emission, but the last time it happened, it was substantially louder, and there was a hiss at the end, along with a larger amount of smoke. I was travelling about fifteen mph in second gear, and it just happened. My impression is that this must be a build up of crankcase pressure, that somehow gets forced out thru the cc vent, into the air cleaner, then perhaps the air cleaner assembly has a rubber seal that is disturbed enough to make the burp sound, and separates releasing the built up crankcase pressure, or at least this is what I think. What think ye all, please.
  3. Hi, If you want to ride the bike up here, I have a honda four synch gage , most tools , and workstand and we could do the synch. I am in Midland about three hours away I think. Ive done a few, and have had good results, well ok, great results.
  4. Someone else I know locally bought a bike that had some serious rust on the frame, and the thing separated the tube near the sidestand and allowed the bike to lean more all the time. This was on an XS 11 but I imagine that it can happen to anything if there is enough rust.
  5. Sell the plans specifically for a few bux although they would hardly be necessary. I am thinking, yes use that pizza pan, but oil, and a bunch of small ball bearings, with a quarter inch plate, but you would need the center stand to work it.
  6. Hi, Ive had back trouble too, and lots of it. After talking to so many people with back trouble, I ve concluded that people have relatively unique problems with their backs, that is one persons solution isnt necessarily going to work for somene else. I do know that one of the very few things that helped me was to lie on my belly on the floor, simultaneously lift both your feet and arms , raising your upper chest a bit, and your upper legs should bend back, then and extend your legs and arms and repeat this. Do not push this to extremes and if you get a sharp pain while doing it, stop. Maybe three sets of seven to begin with, the first day it hurt worse, but overnight it helped. This strenghens the muscles in the back and belly. Another thing is staying out of chairs, most chairs hurt me, stay on the feet, or lay down is what I do unless I can find a chair that reclines very seriously, say forty five degrees. No more straight chairs for me for any extended period, more than ten mins for the last ten yrs, yet there are people that say straight chairs are good for their bad back. If muscle relaxers help, then you prolly have mostly muscle problems, if not, maybe its pinched nerve. Hopefully you dont develop leg pain, that is definitely worse and the lower it goes in the leg, the worse the problem is. If it were me, I would consider giving up the riding for this year. No one ever wants to hear that, but thats what I would consider while you get your health back.
  7. Just a few weeks ago, I saw a Vmax drivetrain in a T bucket, beautifully done here in mid Michigan. It can be done indeed. He left the car show before I talked much to him, I would love to have gotten some pix, but just happened upon the car show unawares and uncamered.
  8. I quit in sixty six, now if I could just ease off on the chowing ! My best wishes to your Mom and family, for all of your comfort and peace of mind. My own Mom is ailing, no cancer yet, and still has a lot of moxie left in her.
  9. Hi, I found on my Mikunis on the XS11, that warming the diaphragm rubbers a little bit helped fit them into the grooves such that they stayed. I used a light bulb maybe eight inches away for a few minutes to warm the things a bit. I also used vaseline to make the grooves a little stickier, but very very light with the vaseline. I will try the tape method next time though, that may be faster. JAT TomSmith
